Working with John and company was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Watching this labor and materials intensive endeavor gave me an appreciation of the ART of masonry. My walkway and front steps ARE a work of art. I can't say enough about this group of reliable, honest, and hard working masons.

John was the third mason I had gotten an estimate from. The others were less expensive but John seemed much more thorough in his assessment of what needed to be done. I had a few questions for him before committing to hiring him and he answered everything to my satisfaction with no pressure to make a decision. Job was started about 2 weeks after hiring. Job took about 4-5 days but was stretched out over a longer period due to weather & weekends. Work area was roped off and left clean every day. Very satisfied with the results. Gotten lots of compliments from neighbors. Would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: We had 2 steps, plus landing leading up to our front door. Bluestone slabs over painted brick & concrete. These steps were there when we bought the house 5 years ago. Bluestone on middle step was loose and allowed water, etc. to drain behind the step. As a result concrete supporting all the bluestone slabs was crumbling and needed to be replaced. Stairs were taken apart and large sections of existing, yet deteriorating concrete removed. Previous steps had not been constructed to code so new steps were put in their place. Since original landing was too shallow the plan was for a deeper new landing and only 1 step rather than 2. Steps & landing would come out farther from the house so some of the walkway pavers had to be removed and/or cut back. Most of deteriorating concrete was removed but not all since it was attached to the house's foundation. New concrete step and landing put in its place. Stucco finish. Bluestone slabs could not be reused since they were the wrong size so replaced with granite.

John was great. He came out and detailed what work needed to be done and how long it would take. He sent a detailed proposal the next evening and gave me a fair timeline for when he could get the work done. He did it at the expected date and finished in the time period he said he would. The job was well done and finished as promised. Great job.
Description of Work: We had brick on the outside of our house that needed pointing up and some foundation mortar that needed replacing. We also needed to acid wash the brick to get old mortar off.

We had a quick response from John who came when he said he would to check out the work. Provided good explanations for everything and came back with a quote promptly...I'll even admit that I didn't make it easy for him when I had to delay the work (some other work that required more finances than originally anticipated). When the time came and we could do it he honored the original estimate (it was a decent amount of time later) and in a short timespan we have a newly pointed chimney, stainless steel cap and a complete crown where before it was falling apart. They were careful to work around the ridgevent and didn't leave a trace of mortar anywhere - would recommend them without hesitation.
Description of Work: We had two flues that needed repair, a cement crown that had almost completely chipped away and several layers of brick that needed replacing on the chimney.

we were very pleased with the whole experience of dealing with john and his crew. they were very professional, showed up on time and explained each step to us.the first day was the bulk of the work and we had 4 guys working all day on it.they did a great job and cleaned up after themselves.the next morning 2 guys came out to do the acid wash, and then the 3rd day they finished up with the waterproofing.john followed up with a call to make sure we were satisfied, and i explained to him that his company and the job they did was the reason we signed on with angie's list! we need various project's done around our house and we haven't had great luck in the past with hiring reliable contractors, so we signed on with angie's list to improve our odd's and this is the first contractor we've hired and we're off to a great start! we have already had neighbor's asking about them and we gave them the info with a strong recommendation to hire them!
Description of Work: they replaced the top 5 feet of our chimney that was crumbling, a new concrete cap and installed a full size stainless steel cap.they also did some repointing on other areas of the chimney that needed it,and did an acid wash of the entire chimney and also water sealed it.

Because of scheduling by both parties, I never actually met John. He came out when I wasn't here to give an estimate which was in line with one other one that I had gotten. I came home from work, the stones that had fallen out were gone & the hole filled in and the check I had left for him gone. I waited a day or 2 for a detail of the work done; nothing. Once I inquired about it, I got a very detailed list. Not being a mason (or I would have done it myself!) I didn't have intimate knowledge of the wall and the faults. Had I been home when the work was done, I have no doubt that I would have been shown the faults.
Description of Work: Stone wall repair. The wall will likely be torn down in a few years, so I didn't need a full out rebuild, just repairing to last a short while.

I contacted John on 1/12/2012 via Angie's List - I saw this company got the Super Service Award for 2011.Based on my experience, they truly deserve the accolades. John got back to me the same day, booked our estimate appointment for the MLK holiday, so both myself and my husband could be there. After the appointment, I received the estimate within 24 hours. We gave the go ahead on 1/20/2012 and the project started on 2/7/2012, finishing by 2/20/2012. John went over payment terms before the project started, and the final price was less than the estimate. They took on additional work after the project started (replacing the basement windows, and spec'd out replacing a non-standard door in our basement. (We decided to pursue this at a later date.) I was also provided with names of another contractor for related work - an ironworks contractor for the new railings - and we were happy with their work as well. They made great recommendations during the project to keep things simple and looking great, like dropping the cobble stone border, because it would have made a tripping hazard. We would hire them again and do recommend them to all our friends and family. Thanks guys!! We are very pleased with the results!

Very happy with the work and I'd recommend John to anyone.
Description of Work: I contacted John based on good reviews here on Angie's. I wanted to replace a narrow asphalt walkway with pavers and redo a front step. I already had a quote from my landscaper, but wanted someone who focused on pavers. John was prompt in the emails setting up a time and was prompt in showing up for the estimate. He offered some advice and we talked about some options. We settled on a curving walkway four feet wide and about sixty feet long, along with a granite step. He sent me a quote a few days later and we adjusted the job to get the number to my target. His cost per sq ft was pretty similar to me landscaper quote, but I had more confidence in John. The crew came the next Monday. Everyone was friendly and knew what to do and quickly got to work. The work as done in a couple days. I liked it so much I asked them to come back and add more, which they did on Thursday.

Overall, my experience with JD Masonry was fantastic. I would not have contacted John for an additional project if I didn't feel he was fairly priced or performed the work to my satisfaction. I will most definitely be a repeat customer as long as I ever have a stonework project to be done. Him and his team work well together, are responsive, swift working, always on time, and courteous. I have nothing but great things to say about this company.
Description of Work: This is the second stone project that JD Masonry has completed for me. John and his wonderful crew installed the stonework around a new gas fireplace I had installed. This job included applying stone from the floor to the cieling as well as a stone hearth. Once again, his work was professional, clean, and something to be truly proud of. John and his team don't stop till everything is perfect and done to satisfaction. His workmanship and business ethic speak volumes about him and his company. When they left, did they did a fabulous job cleaning up. His communication, responsiveness, and dedication to the project at hand was fantastic.

The contractor, John Darling, is polite and educated. He responded to every email and phone call. He came to the house on time and provided a written quote. The job took four days. It involved removing a large concrete patio from in a tight location and replacing it with pavers. The final product looks like something out of a magazine! It's great. My only complaint is that quite a few plants were stomped. This was offset by many nice touches and extras. Ruts caused by heavy machinery were repaired and made invisible. John is quoting a second job to be done in the fall when funds allow.

After selecting this company on Angie's List I called & received a call back the same day. An appointment was made to come out and survey the job within the week. We discussed my budget and what needed to be done. The next day I had an estimate. I thought it was reasonabke and doable with the discounts given. The job was started two days later. It took three days to complete the job and the stairs are beautiful. Could not be more pleased.

I was absolutely floored with the amount of quality work JD and his crew did, especially for the price. Most contractors didn't even consider taking on the job due to the fact that is was a dirt crawlspace. John, the owner, came out for the evaluation, provided a timely quote, and was really flexible with scheduling. He and his crew arrived on time or early every day (it was a two day job), worked hard all day, and cleaned up when they left. The entire process from start to finish was really smooth. The results are absolutely fantastic and were well above and beyond what I expected. JD Masonry will definitely be our first call for future masonry needs.

John was professional and great to work with from the start. We got an estimate months before we actually decided to move ahead with the work and he stayed true to his estimate and offered great suggestions on how to make the patio layout look great. He also told us he would remove a large rock we have had under our swingset for free once he started and also clean our front brick steps which had some messy concrete dried on them after a family member had done a repair. He and his team did a great job cleaning up afterwards and putting everythign back together. I give him an honest A+ to work with, his quote was $3,000 less for the patio than a landscaping company I had contacted and that had come to prepare a quote, and he did awesome work, we love it!

We are extremely satisfied with the work. John and his workers are very professional and kept us informed throughout the project. Our chimney was starting to lose a few chunks of mortar, so we were told it was time to have some work done. I called JD Masonry based on my Angie's List search. John Darling came out a few days later and inspected the entire chimney, inside and outside , and told us that he thought it made sense to replace it from the roofline up, rather than repoint it. I got two other mason's opinions and bids and decided to go with JD because he seemed most thorough and his bid was comparable. They did a great job from start to finish. The company is courteous, clean and on-time. We are very pleased with our new chimney and would be happy to employ JD Masonry again.

We hired JD Masonry to replace our old cracked concrete patio with a new paver patio. He was willing to come out and do the estimate while we were at work, which was very convenient for us. Also, since there was rain in the forecast, he brought extra manpower to have the job done in 3 days rather than 5! He was very easy to get a hold of- both by cell phone and email. We had three estimates and his was the best. We are very happy with the work and would recommend him to family and friends.

Kudos to John Darling and crew. He showed up on time for the estimate appointment and the price was better than 2 other estimates I had received. Communications were excellent. He promptly replied to voice messages and emails. His crew arrived as scheduled and actually completed the work a day earlier than estimated. The crew worked full days, cleaned up after each day of work, and hauled away debris. The work looks great. Lots of compliments from friends and neighbors. JD went the extra mile when I decided to repave the driveway. They returned to pull back the walkway (because I widened the driveway, rendering walkway too long) and returned a 3rd time to level and finish the walkway edge after the driveway work was done. All for no extra charge. The estimated cost was the final price. I'd hire JD Masonry for any future masonry job. A+
Description of Work: The job was to 1) veneer existing concrete front steps with stone and bluestone slab treads, adjusting the height to meet code; 2) remove an existing asphalt walkway to driveway; 3) replace this walkway with pavers; and 4) add an additional, attractively curved paver walkway to the street.
