John Darling returned our initial call promptly, and set up a meeting to look at the chimney. He came when he said he would, explained what needed to be done, and said that he would provide a quote in a few days. The quote was received as promised. He gave us an approximate date of when he could begin work. The job was started around the date that we were quoted. The job took a couple of days. John's staff was very professional. The choice of bricks to replace the damaged ones was perfect. The new bricks blend right in with the original 30 year old bricks that did not need to be replaced.
Description of Work: Some of the bricks and surrounding mortar on a 30 year old chimney was breaking down. JD Masonry replaced the bricks as necessary, repointed and water sealed the chimney.

Contacted John because our front brick steps were crumbling. Due to age and using the wrong snow melt. John provided options that were fair and reasonably priced. We scheduled the job a few weeks later and he had his crew there on time and they worked for 3 straight days in blistering heat. They were professional, polite, took great care of our property! They even watered my plants that we were negklecting. I could not have been happier with the service JD Masonry provided and I would not hesitate to use them again. If you need a mason John is your guy and you willnot be disappointed.

John was prompt and courteous - professional as usual. This is the second time we've used him and would use him again in the future. We have had multiple experiences with other providers claiming to fix our steps - when they haven't! With John, the work is done right the first time! He was able to work within our time frames (steps used for office entrance) and you wouldn't have even known that he and his crew were around - that is how inobtrusive they were!

I appreciated that John was quick to come out and give an estimate. Work was done timely and professional.
Very, very pleased with John Darling and his crew. He came out twice to establish, then refine the proposal, which was competitive. He's very easy to communicate with, explains very nicely what he's planning to do and why, shows pictures of projects he's done, suggested pavers we might like (and actually chose!), etc. Under his and his brother's expert guidance, we now have our old patio redone and connected to an extension section -- something we hadn't even thought of until they came along and suggested it. And now it's done and looks very nice! We're most pleased. He and his brother lead the crew, and they're very professional and dedicated. I'm hoping of course that the masonry work around the house is taken care of now for years to come... but if I ever needed masonry services again, I'd go straight back to JD Masonry for sure. Thank you John & crew!
Description of Work: Remove old concrete patio and steps, put in pavers with border and granite steps, added new new patio section to connect with existing patio. Re-did crumpling outdoor basement steps/stairs, fixed and/or replaced loose chimney bricks, laid stepping stones around the garage.

Response from JD Masonry LLC
I appreciate (member name) positive feedback for JD masonry. I believe I was the only certified mason to provide an estimate for this project. Masonry can sometimes surprise people in terms of the cost. This is due to high material costs, licenses, insurances, and skill needed to achieve quality work. I enjoyed meeting with her and would be happy to complete the job in the future if she choses to proceed with the project.

It's called the specific pointing or something that they do to the chimney. Then because they did such a great job we had them redo a wall. They took it down and redid a wall that we had in the yard. Everything was excellent. They are by far the best people I've ever worked with. John is the one who runs the business. He's a perfectionist and if his people tell him it isn't right, he makes them take it down and do it right. They just did an excellent job. They worked quickly and they got it done in a day. They just did a really great job and the wall looks fantastic.

JD Masonry and crew were courteous, prompt and professional. John called to let me know he would be 1 hour for estimate. He called with date for work, which was right on time. I was told to call with any complaints, which I didn't have any. The worker was polite and professional. My step look wonderful, they matched the old brick (a little lighter, but in same color shade) beyond my expectation and the color of the stucco blends wonderfully with the house. I would recommend them and do plan in the future to continue to request their services.

John came a week before and reviewed the work that needed to be done. He also called with a day the work could be completed. Day and time were not a factor for me as I am pretty much open. On the day the work was to be done, they arrived on time and ready to do the job that was discussed. John and his crew are very professional, polite and hard working. They did a great job!! And cleaned up after the job was completed. John did have to come into the house to clean debris that had fallen into the fireplace and he did remove his shoes as not to dirty the floor. Kudos to him! Not a speck of debris was left. I would use JD Maronry again!! After the work was completed on the chimney, I asked John to give me an estimate on replacing a brick wall. John got back to me in a timely manner with an extremely fair estimate for the work that needs to be done. If you need any masonry work done JD Masonary is the best! I highly recommend them!

It could not have gone any better. Estimated Costs = Actual Cost, everyone showed up on time and the full job took the time quoted. Each day the work area was cleaned up & caution tape put up. Bottom line - if you want a straight shooter who will do quality work and not feel like your pockets being picked and your getting a load of BS - this is the guy. You may not like an answer (such as I can't do this until........ or I hear you, but your best course of action is......) but I liked that. He does not over commit to customers (have more jobs going than he can handle) and when the job is done - it gets done right, on budget and if there are ANY issues along the way he gets back to you and lets you know what's going on and why. I'm going to have John and the team come back in the Spring and assist with an bad stair case in my backyard along with a small patio pour. I'm not even thinking of using anyone else.
Description of Work: We had some water damage and other issues with our front brick steps (blue stone stair tops). I had contacted several Angie's List vendors to determine a course of action (clean/fix/replace) as we were not sure how bad it actually was. John gave me what the others could not - OPTIONS. He told me exactly what they would do and why, along with how long and how much each option would take. We had an unexpected expense arise and when I called John back 3 months later, he came out quickly to review the situation and the ESTIMATE was STILL GOOD! We chose the mid level option, had the stairs repaired and added a small concrete pad in front.

Great! We initially had a slight misunderstanding about the finished work because when John took the steps apart he found the repair process needed to be changed. So the finished product was not what I expected. However, after a brief conversation, John gladly came back out and explained why he needed to do things differently and repaired one some area that he missed. In addition, at no additional cost, he patched and repaired a stone wall in front of my home that was not part of the original deal. I can't be happier with John's attitude, professionalism and skills. Do not hesitate to contact him for your masonry needs. He get's an A+++ from me.

This is a family business run by John. The company is multi generations working on the crews as this is important to me with this type of experience. They are professional and worked with all of our changes. The first crew took out the old brick steps, the rock foundation and prepared for a cement base. The next crew came in and formed a cement base. Then came the 7 steps, 7 feet long and 7 inches high, put in place with a crane. Then another crew came in and repointed all of our bricks on the front steps.

John was great. He did the following: 1. explained my options and his recommendations well 2. communicated consistently the status of the project 3. provided his insurance certificate up front 4. provided a clear written quote with line items for a good price (I got three other quotes) 5. did the job very well I highly recommend him and will likely hire him again in the future. Thanks John for a job well done. P.S. I found John via Angie's List. I didn't know him prior, or know anyone who knew him.
Description of Work: Demo'd and replaced my front steps. Old steps were brick, 16 years old, and coming apart at the mortar joints. John and his crew did the following: 1. completely demo and removed the old stairs 2. poured more concrete to adjust the footing height 3. built new steps out of granite slabs 4. rebuilt a portion of my front walk to adjust the grade slightly

This was the second time we have had John and his team do masonry for our home. The first was excellent and this was a repeat performance. John stopped by to discuss the project and we agreed on an approach. He forwarded an email to me shortly with an estimate thereafter and we agreed on his proposal and timing. John and his team arrived on time on scheduled date. Work took a couple of days and was completed as expected except for minor work which was delayed by thunderstorms. Returned as promised for clean-up. Super job! Would highly recommend!

John had done some relatively minor repair to a stone wall at our previous house several years ago. In the meantime, he built a fabulous fireplace for my brother, who is building a house from scratch. When the retaining wall in the backyard of our current house threatened to collapse, I called John. He gave us several options that he carefully explained. I actually got 3 quotes for this job, and since all were comparable, the choice was clear. John and his crew fit us into their busy schedule, and the operation worked like clockwork, bringing in various equipment and different workers in sequence. We couldn't be happier with the result. If it were a publicly traded company, I'd definitely buy stock in JD Masonry.

Two years ago John Darling (JD Masonry) installed a beautiful curved front stone block patio at my house. I recently noticed that the row of blocks right behind the larger face blocks had dropped down and were no longer flush with them, but maybe 1/2" lower. I called John and he said he'd be there the following Saturday to look at the problem. When he saw it, he said he didn't know why it was happening, but agreed that something was definitely wrong, and he'd be back on Wednesday with a helper and his equipment to fix it. They showed up as scheduled, and did the extensive repairs, this time putting in a concrete foundation to prevent the problem from recurring. I told John to give me an invoice for whatever he thought was fair, but he said that although he didn't know why it happened, there was no reason the patio should have a problem like this, and there would be no charge. The repairs took two men a full half day to remove the blocks, install the concrete, reset the blocks, and redo all the seams. When they removed the blocks, they found the problem- a zillion ants that had tunneled beneath the entire length of the sunken blocks, causing them to slowly collapse into the tunnels. This was nothing John could have anticipated when he installed the patio originally, and certainly no reflection on the quality of his work, so when they were through I again asked John for an invoice, and he again said he guarantees his work, and regardless of the cause there was no charge. That's standing behind your work to what I think is an unprecedented and surprising degree. Tremendous! I absolutely recommend JD Masonry- a rare find.

John had helped us a couple of years ago with a smaller job. We were very happy with the results. Now that our front steps bricks are getting loose after a few harsh winter, we have decided to call John again. He is professional, personable, responsive and gives good advice. He did great work. Was on time, on schedule, neat and keep us posted on the progress every step of the way (we were not home most of the time when John and his team were working). We cannot be happier with our new front steps. And John and his team are genuinely nice people too. Our neighbor who were home and had watched John and his team worked, could not said enough good things about John and his team, how hard they worked, and how good their work was. John will definitely be our go to person if we have any future masonry work that needs to be done.

Well, I must admit, John was a delight and his work was flawless. After writing an earlier review that I was disappointed he wanted to charge my 91 yr old mother $75 to give her an estimate on a very small job; he called me, apologized and we made arrangements for him to stop by on a Saturday to take a look at the job. He explained that he usually charges the estimate fee as he often spends one to two hours with the customer reviewing what needs to be done but in our case, it took him 15 minutes to take a look at the job and qive me a quote! The work was excellent! Thank you John! I would recommend you and your work very highly. P.S. thank you for being so kind also!

After the winter thaw, the cement on our front steps was crumbling away, leaving bricks along the edges of the steps dangerously loose. We called JD Masonry and got an immediate response from John Darling, who came out to assess the damage. He was personable and professional and sent us an estimate within days. We had another company come out to quote on the job, but decided to go with JD. The time between booking them and the actual work was three weeks, which I thought was very reasonable. On the scheduled day, the crew of two arrived on time. They were very polite, very industrious and did a good and professional job of repairing the steps. Cement work creates a lot of fine dust, which got all over our shrubs and some decorative fixtures. The following day, two other workmen came back and cleaned the steps and fixtures and put the fixtures back in place. We were informed how to prepare the steps and care for them next winter to prevent water from seeping into the cement and freezing, which caused the damage in the first place. Very happy with this vendor. Would definitely use again and recommend them.
Description of Work: Rebuild the front steps with concrete and bricks. Patch the back steps with concrete.
