MJ Carlson Landscaping

Excellent! Absolutely exceeded all expectations. We contacted MJ Carlson after purchasing a new home with an extremely uneven, sloped yard with no outdoor space. Following our initial consult, he came up with suggestions we would not have even imagined to resolve usage, safety and drainage issues. Mike recommended a reasonably priced patio stone and we selected colors. He came up with a gorgeous pattern and installation was executed flawlessly. His instinct for aesthetics is incredible. Mike checked in with us on decision making along the entire process- by the end of the job we knew we could just answer "whatever you recommend!".

The initial visit to take a look at our driveway was rescheduled several times. After they did come, we did not receive an estimate from them for a week or two. I called to find out what was going on, and was told it had been mailed, but we never received it. They said they would drop it off in our mailbox the next day, but again nothing came. That was the last contact we had. I'm not interested in chasing contractors down just to receive an estimate.

They provided high quality. They were professional and always on time. They were creative and looked for ways to save money. I liked their ability to reuse the trees and shrubs on the property, so instead of having to buy new things they were able to move some existing stuff around to save us money and give us more mature plantings.

We used Mr. Carlson for several years, the last being the winter of 2011. He was very reliable and came early, as we had contracted. However, the work was sloppy. Even though we had snow markers deliniating our driveway, they were frequently run over and our grass and plantings were run over. We had to replant. Even though we brought this to his attention, it seemed that speed was more important. Also the drive was not plowed thoroughly, with snow piles left, some created by the plow. This was very important because I conduct my business from my home and there are a lot of people who walk to my office from my drive.

Mr. Carlson arrives promptly, the snow removal was always done before I had to come or go. For the landscaping, Mr Carlson made sure to come when the ground was dry (unlike a prior worker on another home who worked after it rained and damaged the lawn) and used both an excavator and bobcat as required. His work is first rate and I plan to use him for all my lawn work in the future.

Their prices were very good compared to other service providers in Lexington. Mr. Carlson is very friendly. Unfortunately over the years there have been many missed appointments when he'd said he'd do something and either did not or it took days to weeks to do it. Lots of credible sounding excuses but eventually just too many of them. We always tried to give lots of lead time which didn't always matter in terms of getting something done. It actually lead to us not doing projects because the coordination with the provider became such a hassle.
