They did a really great job. They were professional and worked with me to determine whether or not the trees were salvageable or needed to be cut down. They also actually thinned out the trees vs. simply shaving them up from the bottom (i.e., the Q-Tip look) like some of the services that did my neighbors trees.
Description of Work: Removal of 1 plum tree and 1 maple tree. The stumps were ground. Thinned out approximately 10 maples, 2 birch and 1 crabapple tree. Cut and stacked wood in yard.

This was a very long (80 foot?) and large tree limb that caused little structural damage to the house when it fell, but was precariously balanced and could cause more damage if it had fallen further. Boston Tree Preservation was able to respond in 12 hours, maneuver between close neighbors and telephone and electric wires, and remove the limb and all the debris in a day. From previous jobs my impression is that BTP may not be the least expensive company, but they do excellent, reliable and professional work.
Description of Work: Removed a very large 2 foot diameter limb that had fallen during a storm and was hanging precariously on the roof of my two-story house.

I had a mixed experience with this company. They are certainly pleasant enough but follow through was shaky. Unfortunately, the leaves emerged and the moth feast began. A week after a panicked call, they finally showed up and sprayed my already damaged trees. The damage continued and I called and asked for a follow-up inspection. They did call back and say they'd check it out. That was two weeks ago. No word.
Description of Work: Spray maples and crap tree for winter moths. Injected fertilizer in soil around maples. I made the appointment before the leaves came out (even dropped the check off at their office) in an effort at preventing damage before it occurred.

We were very satisfied with the work and the team was very professional. No damage was done to our trees during the climbing / cutting process, branch removal was appropriate and left the trees looking healthy and beautiful.
Description of Work: We hired this company for a full day of work for a two person team. They came with three people and stayed a bit less than a full day. They removed a tree, pruned large branches on about 7 trees to improve sunlight on our property and reduce risk of damage to our home, and cut down a group of about 10 burning bush plants from about 7 feet high to about 2 feet high. All wood material was chipped by the company with a chipper truck. We benefited from a winter discount offered by this company.

In 11/07, we called several companies and got detailed estimates from two. We went with BTP because of reputation and Joe A. seemed knowledgeable when he came out to look at our needs and do the estimate. The two main items we needed done were the removal and cleanup of a large spruce tree and the trimming of a tree for wire clearance. Also, the removal of a vine, a small sapling and trimming of deadwood. Joe was present when the crew came to do the work in early 12/07. He explained what had to be done and then left. The spruce was taken down safely and expediently, but the promised cleanup of the debris did not happen. Rather, a blower was used to spread the debris around, but only the large pieces of wood were removed. However the bigger problem was that the work crew did not trim the other tree for the wire clearance and when questioned why, the guys said that they were not wire certified and that Joe "should not have told us this could be done by them." Joe seemed knowledgeable and represented himself as an arborist, but the guys who came said that he is not. We were unhappy that they sent people who would not do what was promised and what was also outlined on the written estimate (and paid for). It was late in the day, snowing, and the crew left. We tried to call Joe, playing phone tag. When we finally reached him, he said he would come out take a look in the Spring. In April, we began to follow-up again as we d still not heard anything. It is summer and there have been weeks of phone tag with Joe and Peter Wild. Mr. Wild states that this wire clearance has to be done by National Grid, although he says that BTP is EHAP certified to work around wires. We could have called National Grid to start and they'd have done it for free, but we were concerned about preserving the tree and we were willing to pay for the expertise of a certified arborist. We paid but the tree was not trimmed. If National Grid has to trim the tree, why did BTP give us an estimate for this service and CHARGE us? And why did they represent themselves as a company who could do this? BTP over promised and under delivered and they owe us a refund for wire clearance trimming that we paid for and they did not do. We have given them every opportunity to make it right and they have not done so. BTP s website advertises NOFA, ISA and MAA certifications and that they employ 10-15 certified arborists. I contacted the Int'l Society of Arborculture to ask if Mr.Wild or Joe A. were certified. The response was Peter Wild has not been certified in a very long time and I was not able to find Joe A. in our database . I contacted Northeast Organic Farming Assoc. and the response was that a few people in the company that had been accredited in the past have let their accreditations lapse. I could not find BTP listed as members on the Massachusetts Arborists Assoc. website so I contacted them directly to verify BTP s certification claims, but no response.
Description of Work: Promised (and paid for): Removal and cleanup of a large spruce tree along the driveway and the trimming of another tree for wire clearance, removal of a vine, a small sapling and trimming of deadwood. Performed: Removal of a large spruce tree along the driveway, removal of a vine, a small sapling and trimming of deadwood.

Response from Boston Tree Preservation
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this complaint. We were confused as to who the complaint was from since we have no one in our data base by that name. After review however, we determined it was under a different name. We were surprised to receive this negative complaint. In our mind the job went well since the invoice was paid in a timely manner and there were no complaints made directly to us until almost six months later. Boston Tree Preservation is in its 33nd year of business. We have a customer base of 20,000 people and service over 10,000 clients per year. I am the sole owner of Boston Tree Preservation and pride myself on our impeccable service record, customer satisfaction and pioneering the industry with organic based service and products, powering our vehicles on biodiesel fuel and running as “green” a business as possible. We are committed to lessening our carbon footprint. We have several glowing reports on Angie’s List. Let me address the member’s concerns. 1. His comment about hiring our company after getting detailed estimates from two companies is only half true. He in fact hired us after the first company he hired, Arborcare, walked off the job even after their equipment and employees were on site, not after he got other detailed estimates as he states. His irate manner and dangerous job requests for improper pruning of a specific tree for wire clearance pushed the Arborcare Company to quit the job. Safety and education first is a highly practiced procedure in our high liability business. Boston Tree Preservation did not learn of this “boobie trap” until after we worked for Mike. 2. This time he waited until Boston Tree Preservation performed the work and the clean up to make his dangerous pruning request. He entered the chipping “danger” zone and demanded we dismember a small tree for extensive wire clearance. He accused my employee of arguing when in fact my employee who had on ear protection with the loud chippers operating, expressed concern for him standing unprotected in the clean up danger zone. 3. As far as his comments about wanting additional wire clearance in NStar electrical hazard areas, there seems to be some “he said, she said” banter that is irrelevant to his complaints. My bucket truck operator completed the Tree Care Industry Association EHAP (electrical hazard awareness program) in 2006. NStar owns the air space around the primary and secondary wires on the poles. The tree in question required some minimal pruning for adequate wire clearance and years of protection without dismembering the small tree, which we did. He was clever enough to wait until the end of the job to request this tree have additional pruning. He states the tree was not pruned when it was, just not to the unnecessary degree he asked for after the job was done. He called my home on a Sunday night more than 3 months after the job was completed and paid for, to complain about this. I gave him the courtesy of listening to him during the dinner hour. After listening carefully to his concerns, I determined that this really was a job for NStar. I told him I would call NStar to arrange for the additional pruning since we were in NStar territory. We parted politely on the phone and I called NStar to coordinate the follow-up job. I told him and he thanked me. This was at least 2 months before the complaint was made to your office. 4. He now chooses to attack our credibility by checking into the certifications mentioned on the website. We always have employees with those credentials, though not necessarily everyone is credentialed by all of the organizations. I was Massachusetts certified for more than 25 years until I moved on to other business development. Our company is always reaching for higher levels of competence and service, as well as developing new products and procedures for the industry. He is portraying an inaccurate account of what happened on his property and is in fact slandering our company. The warning here should actually be for other tree care companies to be careful when working for this man. I appreciate the opportunity Angie’s List offers to defend ourselves against such an unfair and inaccurate complaint. Regards, Peter M. Wild Founder and CEO

So far, the inspection was fine, they sent em a report of what they anticipated needing to do to some hemlocks suffering from early stages of wooly aedelgid (sp) infestation. I signed up for the work to continue, they came, applies horticultural oil, trimmed branches (away from house to reduce squirrel visits) and such. they seem to have a small staff and were sometimes hard to get on the phone, but thats ok, they always returned calls.

Mr. Joe Alongi is our contact. We relied on him totally while we were trying to keep the maple alive, and when it finally became clear that it was too dangerous to leave standing he took charge of the tree removal and handled every detail - informing the city, getting the street blocked off for the equipment to operate safely, leaving us the usable firewood afterwards, etc. He is always a pleasure to work with - honest, reliable, and very knowledgeable about trees!
Description of Work: BTP regularly treats our hemlocks for woolly adelgid and another parasite and has kept them going for a number of years. In addition, they have pruned trees for us and recently removed a large silver maple in very bad condition.

This company tries to be as organic as possible. They use horticultural spray and they inject our trees. They spray the leaves on our trees, too. They use some kind of oil treatment. They are very good. The people that do the field work are very personable. They are fairly quick with in terms of response time. They usually get back to me the next day. I have recommended them to my neighbor. Now although my plan may cost me a certain amount of money, each plan is very individualized with them according to what you want specifically. I like that. They work with you and offer you sound advice and we have been very impressed with their services.

BTP is EXCELLENT! As I watched them work from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the entire time I thought, "Every penny I'm spending on this is well spent." Joe Alongi was terrific, as he met me to price the work and advise on the best options to achieve what I wanted. The office was communicative and confirmed the schedule, sending me a written work order detailing the description of work. Joe told me that, because of a tree infestation that they were working on, it would take several weeks before they could do the job. However, he notified me of a cancellation, which allowed them to do the work two weeks before I expected it to be done. The crew (Gary, Rahim, and Seth) arrived on time, were courteous, respectful, available for questions, responsive, efficient, professional, and knowledgeable. They moved the equipment into tight places around my pool, being very careful to protect my property. I am ecstatic about the work they did and wholeheartedly recommend Boston Tree Preservation.
Description of Work: BTP cut down twenty trees along one fence of my yard. These trees were growing in about six clumps, and were simply weeds that had been neglected for 20 plus years and that previous owners had ignored. Some had grown into the neighbors' fence. BTP also trimmed back two giant trees hanging over from my neighbors' yards, and they cut down a bunch of maple saplings. Their work re-opened my backyard and pool to sunlight, reclaimed land for gardening and landscaping, and made my property look much bigger than it is. They put everything they cut down through a wood chipper and removed all the resulting chips.

They came out 6 to 8 weeks ago to take care of the problem. That was what we had scheduled as the optimum time in order to preserve the tree. They explained everything that they did, and I was so impressed with them, Dan Wentworth and Lonnae Cameron. What I was most impressed with was their attitude. They took their time with me, were very accepting of any questions and concerns I had, and even the original estimator who came out was a pleasure to work with as well. They were very clean and neat as well. I look forward to working with them again in the future.
Description of Work: I had a few trees in the back that weren't doing so well. They came out and offered an estimate last for what they would do to take care of it. Upon arriving at the scheduled date, they trimmed the tree and explained the treatment process that would take place later in the year.

As with my earlier experiences w/Boston Tree Preservation, I found the representative who gave the estimate to be prompt, courteous, a good listener & communicator, knowledgeable, and ready with multiple options to discuss. They were able to schedule this non-urgent job within a week. The work was done promptly, & the area was cleaned up perfectly. As before, they mailed me a feedback form afterwards and responded promptly and satisfactorily to my one problem with the job. I had asked that the limb be cut into firewood and left for me, which the representative forgot to ask the workers to do (probably because it would've been only an armload of wood). We easily agreed that the company would drop off an equivalent amount of firewood after their next job in my area. I put ''N/A'' for the price, because I didn't get other estimates. They aren't the cheapest around, but I like their philosophy, saving trees and using all organic products.

I called Joe Olongi as soon as I saw the tree had fallen. He was at the house that day and arranged to have a crew there the following morning. They were very courteous and efficient. It wasn't an easy job because they had to work around the fence between the two yards that had collapsed under the tree. The crew was sensitive to the fact that the fence needed to be put back up at least temporarily so the dogs couldn't get out and they took care of that before they left. I have used Boston Tree for all my tree maintenance and Joe is extremely responsive, usually coming within 24 hours of my call. He has a good memory for the trees and past treatments and his recommendations always pan out. I'm very pleased with their work. The folks who come for the regular treatments are very considerate about my heavily planted perennial beds and understand my need to direct the hoses when they come and spray. And they don't even seem to think I'm nuts. Well, not sure about that.
Description of Work: A fallen tree was cut up and removed from my yard and my neighbor's yard, where it had come through the fence. Within the last year they have also treated my trees for the hemolock wooly adelgid and for winter moth. They treated my woodland garden with a manure tea fertilizer and have done the pruning necessary for some of the very large trees in my garden.

They are very knowledgeable. The annual contract can be expensive, but they generally recommend the right course of action. We ignored their warning about winter months last year, to the detriment of our trees. They use organic materials. We recommend them for keeping trees alive. I cannot say enough positive things about this company. They were quick to respond--both to my initial call and then to set up the job--and listening to their representative, Chuck Sherzi, describe how they would approach the job and meet my concerns was a lesson in horticulture and worth the price of the work. The men that did the actual pruning were equally friendly and did a beautiful job (I had no idea what a dramatic difference pruning would make visually, since our main concern was the health of the trees). They cleaned up so well afterwards, they left the yard itself looking nicer than before they came. As an added bonus, they give a 10% discount on certain jobs if you prepay.
Description of Work: Two trees were pruned and one smallish Hawthorn tree was removed. They also did some minor pruning of an oversized rhodie. They will be spraying 3 trees for winter moths when the trees leaf out, as well as organically spraying them a couple of times through the season. (In the fall they systemically fed these same three trees with an organic solution to boost their immunity to disease).
