Along with two other electricians (who were very nice but I can't remember their names), they went through each room and replaced outlets and installed new lighting. In the kitchen, Joe found where the previous owner had installed an outlet over the stove for the microwave using a feed from an outlet next to the stove. The wiring was not correct and had to be replaced. At each point Joe and his team explained what they were doing and what it would accomplish. I felt they were very honest about what needed to be replaced and what was o.k. I would hire them again in a minute if I need electrical work done and I would recommend them to anyone needing electrical work.
Description of Work: I recently moved into a condo that was built in the 70s. The previous owners had lived here for over 20 years and the husband had done some 'handy' work. In the first month living here, I used more light bulbs than I had in 20 years. I also got shocked several times when I plugged items into wall outlets.

+ -1 moreOn his initial visit, Dave used phone line I had already started connecting to make the proper connections and send our phone signal to other wall jacks throughout the house. All seemed fine when he left, but a day later, we still had no dial tone throughout the house. With one phone call, Dave quickly returned and upgraded some wiring equipment. Days later, we still had problems, and returned yet again (promptly!) to check everything, and all seems good now. These were three visits, of which we paid just one time, for the first visit. Exceptional promptness and attention.
Description of Work: Dave examined and re-wired some phone lines, to replace older, frayed connections. In a follow-up visit (we were still experiencing phone problems), he built a small box for the connections, at no additional charge.

+ -1 moreThe first visit was the $99 special for all over electrical inspection in January. The electrician Joe was very polite and professional. I needed a lot of work to get done so I scheduled February 19, 2013. Electrical panel needed to be replaced as the old one can be a fire hazard, ceiling light/fan in dining area needed to be replaced as the old ceiling light/fan was not grounded properly and I wanted a new one anyhow, and also needed to replace the fire/carbon monoxide alarm. I was given a quote via e-mail. Joe sent a nice reminder e-mail letting me know his partner Dave would be the master electrician doing the work. Dave arrived early. He was also very polite and professional. The work took all day because it was a lot to be done. Also, Dave had to go purchase the electrical panel as the one he had bought was not the right size. No problem because I just wanted the job done and knew it would take all day. All the work was completed and I received an invoice via e-mail which was the same as quote Joe had given me.
Description of Work: The date of service is scheduled for January 2013 so I do not have any details to provide at this time.

+ -1 moreI think the price was reasonable for the work and the guy who gave the quote was professional. In addition, he checked several of the outlets that I had question about their safety. I had also replaced several outlets/light switches myself and he checked their safety as well. I still plan to get work done--very likely from JP O'brien, but I am considering another project so I am reassessing what I need to have done.
Description of Work: This estimate was for switching position of 1 light switch, adding 2 light switches to presently pull chain lights (one was a fan unit), switching an electrical input from one main box to anothernstall 3-4' t5 strip lights in basement tapped off existing lighting, Install 2-20amp gfci outlets in unfinished basement and install 2bulb fixture outside tapped off porch light currently switched from units.

+ -1 moreIt went pretty well except that I spent time trying to locate things. Whatever they moved stayed where they moved it. Nothing was put back. Also, one of the items on the list was to replace all of the old 2-prong outlets. There were several that he did not do. I called him back to finish up and received an additional bill which I did not expect.
Description of Work: He did the original inspection which took less than an hour. He then provided an estimate of what should be done to upgrade the electrical to put the house in better selling condition. That was what I requested. Here are his recommendations which I subsequently purchased: Found 3 circuit breakers that are mult-tapped. - Found 2 outlets in the unfinished area of the basement that should be gfci protected. - Found 2 missing switch plates in unfinished basement area. - There is a temporary light socket where there should be a light fixture in unfinished basement area. - Main ground wire to water main not terminated properly. - Laundry outlet should be gfci protected. - Kitchen counter top outlet has no ground and is not gfci protected. Recommend installing a new 20amp grounded circuit for this location. - Outlet that computer is plugged into is 2 prong and not grounded. Recommend installing a new 15amp grounded circuit for this location. - Gfci in 2nd floor bathroom is not responding to test. Recommend installing new gfci. - Outlet in bedroom that air conditioner is plugged into is 3prong and has no ground present. Recommend installing a 15amp grounded circuit for this location. - Found 3prong outlet in hallway with no ground present. Recommend installing a 2prong outlet in this location. - Install whole house surge protector. - Cost to replace old 2prong outlets to new 2prong outlets.

+ -1 moreIt went smooth at first, but my huose is 112 years old and it was to remove all the knob and tube wiring through out the entire house. Joe and Dan are very professional and knowledgable we knew there would be a few hiccups and as it turn out there ended up being 7 holes put into the waslls, but it was worth it instead of tearing the walls (which were put up in 2006), so I can have the walls patched . I would recommend them to anyone who needs electrical work done.

Problem found was defective dimmer switch that they replaced with new switch that was much too expensive compared with what could have been purchased at any hardware store. Also requested bid to upgrade electrical service for which they responded with a quote about twice what I ultimately paid with another contractor.

+ -1 moreSurge protector: O'Brien showed up when they promised, did the work quickly and cleanly. Several nearby lightning strikes have done no damage to our equipment and it looks like the surge protector was installed properly. Additional work: I have a problem with some arc-fault circuit breakers installed by another electrician and called JP O'Brien to see if they could resolve it. Left message twice and received no response, so replaced breakers myself [a solution not available to everyone.] No idea why they did not respond, though geography may have been part of it. Whatever the reason, very disappointing. Office lighting: Thinking the location was more convenient for O'Brien, I suggested our Executive Director try them for the office lighting repairs we needed. They came fairly quickly, fixed the problems and charged what we thought was a fair price. Fully satisfied.
Description of Work: O'Brien installed a whole house surge protector at my house as per an Angie's List big deal. They did not respond to a later call for additional work at my house. On my recommendation, a non-profit I'm associated with hired them to perform repairs on office lighting.

Told us we didn't need something my husband originally wanted (saved us money) Is going to send us an estimate for us to do some more 'odd' jobs around our new home (new to us) Thank you JP O'Brien and David for helping us with our electrical needs, we now have found our power guys!

Description of Work: This was a coupon for a whole house inspection. They were terrific! + -1 moreThis was an absolute disaster at first because I got no response at all to what I perceived as a dire situation. I wrote a scathing review and gave the provider an "F". After working for resolution, these guys were AWESOME, and I guess there had been some family issue at the time that was keeping them from responding to call-outs. It would have been nice to have known that at the time. However, they came over, diagnosed the problem, fixed it, then came over again when other pieces of the system broke. Super super nice and made great recommendations.
Description of Work: I would love to have used this service provider, as they had excellent reviews here on Angie's List. However, I called on Saturday and left a message describing a hard-wired smoke detector/carbon problem that was driving us crazy (constant beeping) and needed immediate attention--no one has called me back and it's now Monday afternoon. ***PLEASE SEE UPDATE BELOW***
