I have used Collings Co. three times for tree removal, stump grinding, and general tree maintenance. Walter, the owner/manager, is straight-forward, honest, and extremely knowledgeable. His crew did the work they said they would, and left the area cleaner than they found it. While sometimes it is difficult to get the busy man by phone -- last year I had had to wait over two weeks for a returned call -- I recommend him to all those needing honest tree work.

I would have picked them if I decided to go through with this process. The employee that came out was professional, helpful and punctual.

Very well. Walter came over, walked the property with me, and wrote out a detailed quote that listed what we talked about for work. Walter has been in business since 1972. He writes the quote, shakes your hand and does the tree work. He doesn't send over a crew that you have never met to do the work. He shows up with one or two employees and he climbs and cuts. He stays on site. Walter is a hard working guy who has been in the business for 36 years and knows the work and has great stories. The guys left the yard cleaner than they found it. Because of the work Walter did in November, not a single branch came down in our yard during the December ice storm.

Walter and his crew were great. The estimating process went smoothly and they arrived within the week to do the work. Work was completed in one day. They didn't drive trucks all over the lawn and left the yard very clean. We felt bad that in the end the work was a little more and little longer than he had estimated, but he stuck to the original quote. That was classy in our opinion. We wouldn't hesitate to call them for future work.

The Collings family did a stellar job. They showed up on time, did a perfect job, cleaned up the site, were very professional and courteous and completed it all on time. I was very impressed and would highly recommend them to anyone.

I called Collings three times trying to get them to come out for an estimate. Despite their cheery message about how great they are, they never even called me back. I made several attempts thinking perhaps my initial call did not get fully recorded, but after three attempts, I figured they weren't reliable and certainly weren't responsive.

I called and left messages 3 times before I received a call back. Walter set an appointment for 10:30 on a Sunday morning then never showed, all day. I left 3 more messages before receiving a call back and another appointment was set by Walter for a Tuesday evening. There was a severe thunderstorm, so he called to cancel then set the next appointment for Thursday evening. Again he was a no show and did not call to cancel. I tried 3 more times to reach him, both cell and office numbers, and the calls were not returned. After that I called another tree service not on Angie's list. The bottom line is that if I can't rely on a contractor to keep an appointment they set or return a phone call, then I certainly can't rely on them to do the job I'm paying for.

Walter Collings arrived on time to view the job and present the estimate. I found him to be professional and very respectful. I showed him other potential trees "at issue" and he explained that these were healthy trees with no urgent requirements to be pruned or cut down. They got the job, and arrived punctually on Tuesday at 8 am. They removed the dead trees, pruned the hemlocks, cleaned up the area so you would never know that they had been there. They don't drive their vehicles on your lawn which also was a plus. If ever the need arises for a tree service, Walter has the job. Fantastic.

Walter did a great job & I wouldn't hesitate to use his services again! My neighbor has some sick trees and will definitely be pushing them to use his services.

I had a backyard that was heavily treed in and a list of about 8 trees I wanted taken out or pruned to open it up more. I talked with 3 companies and obtained detailed estimates and quotes on work, which varied widely. All of the services were highly rated and very professional but Walter Collings went a few steps beyond: his pricing was the most competitive, so I was able to do most of the work in one job, and what he gave me was a quote, not an estimate. He and his crew arrived promptly and got right to work squaring away the job site. They were consummate professionals: efficient, courteous, and they left the job site in better condition than when they arrived (cleaned up some other wood I had laying around). Another bonus was while he was up in the trees, Walter cleaned up a few other trees that were nearby as a complementary service. I will recommend him to everyone I know in the neighborhood and am already thinking about future projects that I can engage him for. Outstanding.

Walter loves his job and has a great respect for his work and for the trees that he services. When he came to survey the job he made some recommendations to trim back the trees from the roof to avoid problems with squirrels, and other problems associated with trees touching the home. My main reason for calling was to have a tree examined that was dying on one side. I would have likely removed the entire tree, but Walter wisely recommended that a proper trimming and clean up was all that was needed and that the tree should be kept. He was absolutely right. Walter's crew came while my wife and I were at work and did the job requested and more and left no trace that they had been there except a nice note. His price was right on the money and they did an exemplary job. The yard looks great! Walter is a busy man and can be often hard to get a hold of, but if you are persistent he will get back to you and is very flexible to accommodate the customer's schedule when needed.

They did a fantastic job! Walter came by and gave us a quote and suggestions on the best ways to take care of the trimming. He was friendly and professional and it was apparent that he loves what he does. We called back about 2 months later to get the work done and he was able to do it a few days later. The work he and his company did looks great--you almost don't notice that the oak tree was trimmed because the shape of it looks so natural, yet he did exactly what we wanted (no more branches hanging over our roof, and the low-hanging branches in the yard are gone which makes our small backyard look much bigger). The dogwood tree looks healthy again, and we were given tips on how to keep it healthy. They did a great job cleaning up after they were done as well. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needed tree removal and care.

I am VERY pleased by the results. Walter and his crew were polite and efficient. They arrived at the scheduled time and before leaving, cleaned up everything that had fallen from/off the trees. The job came in at the estimate -- a price that was 1/2 to 1/3 that of other landscapers from whom I got estimates. I would definitely use the Collings Company again.

Walter first came and left me an estimate and left a nice note (even when I was not home and missed the appointment). The estimate was more affordable than any other company I had contacted. Walter came and trimmed a large tree on the side of our house as well as a large tree at the front of our house. He also cut large dead branches off of the front tree that was hanging out over into the street. He cleaned up very thoroughly after the jobs and did an excellent job. Walter even gave us advice about ants around one of our trees and treated the tree for us. He was very friendly and helpful.

I placed four calls to this company over a two week period, leaving a detailed voicemail message with what I was looking for and how they could reach me. In my final voicemail I asked if someone could return my call even if they didn't service my area so that I would know to stop calling them. It has been almost three weeks and I have yet to receive a phone call. I know this is a busy season, but how long does it take to return a call and leave a message? I suspect the people that rave about this business must have some inside connection because this is the least professional service I've encountered to date.

Walter and his crew showed up when they said they would and went right to work. The job went very smoothly and their clean-up was exceptional.

Went great. Walter responded quickly for an estimate request, showed up on time (on a Sunday!) for the estimate. The price he quoted was barely half of the competing quote. He was able to do the work within about a week of booking him. He and his team showed up on time, worked efficiently, cleaned everything up and left my yard neater than it was before they came! They were done in three hours. Walter also trimmed a couple of extra branches at my request after his tools were put away without moaning about it. As with most contractors, Walter's a little gruff on the outside, but the bottom line is he did a great job for a great price and I'd hire him again.

Walter was punctual to the dot for the onsite estimate. Unlike the two other bidders (both of whom are A rated on Angie's), he provided a written estimate. He also included his insurance information on it. In walking through the property, Walter identified all trees by name and even pointed out a diseased tree I had not noticed. When we contracted him, I proposed a date for the work, but offered him much flexibility, as this was a small job. However, he took the initiative to complete the job a day early because of a rain forecast. There was no overrun in price paid vs. estimate.

Walter promptly returned a message we left and arrived as scheduled to survey our job. The project involved trimming a "giant" (Walter's term) oak that arched over the house. Walter quickly determined the job was beyond his capability. However Walter spent almost thirty minutes reviewing our options with us and provided a referral to a tree service with crane capabilities.
