Rich was excellent. He called within an hour of my original phone call, came out that day to view the site. Submitted a proposal within 3 days. Work began within a week. We had a very tough digout with a/c unit very close. To start they had to pour a concrete wall where a double door was previously located. Then the precast stairs were installed and a bulkhead place over top. Then the block wall was removed the the area was backfilled and graded the area away from the house. We are very very satisfied with the work Rich and his company did.
Description of Work: We needed to remove an old concrete block wall, install precast stairs and bulkhead. This was a full digout and installation.

Richard and team replaced an old rusted door with a new Bilco steel door, powder coated and sand filled holes that were deep all around the bulkhead. Process was quick and easy. Richard was great deal with. It took a few weeks and a couple of emails to get a final receipt but other than that it was a great experience.

Originally we were very pleased with Richard. He came out right away, gave us a quote and followed up with his insurance just as he said he would. On the installation day, he and his crew were a few hours later than they told us they would be but that wasn't a big deal. Here's the good points: * we have a new bulkhead and it looks like it was installed correctly (yes, there is only 1 good point) The bad points: * they covered a significant amount of the old debris under a 1/4 inch of soil which will no longer be able to support a lawn * destroyed about 80% of our yard * damaged the neighbor's driveway (the crane had to come down her driveway) - they did patch it * broke our hardwired smoke/carbon monoxide detector because of the amount of dust in the air * they damaged the alarm system to the new door * our basement is covered in dirt Although the bulkhead replacement itself went well we now have to spend money to: * remove the construction debris buried in our yard * bring in new topsoil and reseed the lawn * have our alarm company repair the alarm * have an electrician replace the broken smoke/carbon monoxide detector * days of cleaning the dust out of the basement Whatever he quotes you, add a significant amount of money on top of that to undo the damage that his crew will do. The worst part is that we called to explain our concerns. He didn't want to listen and when we told him we were going to give a bad review on Angie's List he said, "I don't give a s***." and hung up the phone.

I was surprised at how this business venture ended. It started out very well. Richard met me at my house, and we spent a long time discussing what needed to be done and options that were available. He described exactly what kind of access would be needed for the equipment. That involved vehicles driving on my neighbor's property and a crane inserting the concrete base between two trees to the installation site. Richard said he would dig up two shrubs so that the small digging machine could get in, and that he would replace the shrubs afterward. Also, he would spread some loam and grass seed on my neighbor's grass when the job was done. The quoted price was competitive, and Richard said that he could provide me with two references from my town. That all sounded very good. I was impressed and looking forward to getting the job done. The site visit occurred on a Thursday. The next day Richard dropped off some color samples at my house. Early the following week, I called him to tell him what color I wanted and to remind him to send me a written quote. He then sent me a proposal by email. It described the installation process, but did not specify the size or color of the bulkhead or mention the care of the shrubs and lawn that we had discussed. I sent Richard a reply email, asking him to add the missing pieces of information to the proposal, and I said that I would like to go ahead with the job once I received the amended proposal and the promised references. From that point on, I heard nothing more from Richard or anyone else at Bay State Bulkhead, despite two emails and three phone calls from me over a 10-day period. I had to move on and talk to other firms, but I am mystified by this behavior.

We are not pleased with the end result of this project. The issues: the door on the bulkhead leaks, the re-grading around the bulkhead is terrible, and our fence was broken in the process. I can understand the fence of course, it was cold and it is vinyl - we knew there was a risk pulling it out of the ground to get the equipment into the backyard, so I can write that one off. However, I cannot ignore the fact that the door on the bulkhead leaks - this is due to poor quality workmanship plain and simple. They arrived late (due to late delivery of the bulkhead unit - fine) and worked into the dark hours, which we believe resulted in a poor seal around the door and leaks (there was a lot of dirt in the caulking around the door because they were filling in the holes at the same time as sealing the door - in the dark). In addition, the grading around the door was terrible and exacerbated the problem. We asked him to come back to fix it of course, but he never did.

Very positive experience with Bay State Bulkhead. The estimator (Plator) was prompt in scheduling an appointment, was able to come out on a weekend, and showed up on time. Plator gave us several options and talked me through the work - we went with the biggest project, which included a custom metal bulkhead, new concrete foundation, new basement stairs and a new metal basement door, all of which are fantastic. Despite the project being expensive (more than we were quoted by others), the responsiveness and thoughtfulness that seemed to go into the work product was worth the amount we paid, and I have no doubt the new bulkhead will last. The only reason I did not give full "A's" across the board was that the project took 4 (instead of 2) days to complete and the guys typicall did not show up until at least noon - though my understanding was that one of the day's was lost to a truck breakdown. Also, there was a fair amount of concrete "pebbles" left in our grassy back-yard, which I've had to spend time to remove so as to not damage our mower. Regardless of these 2 minor inconveniences, I'd fully recommend Bay State Bulkhead.

Contacted the Bulkhead Man for an estimate to replace old bulkhead. He stated he would be out at a certain time ended up being 2 1/2 hours late with no call. Gave a verbal estimated and was suppose to email an estimate to us and stated he could write us in for an appointment to perform the service. He did not provide us with the estimate nor did he show up for the appointment even after I contacted him regarding both. A few days later he called stating he would be out that Saturday to perform the work - when told we never received his proposal/estimate he just shrugged it off and sent it a few minutes later. For obvious reasons we did not go with this provider.

We received a prompt proposal soon after the initial visit. The proposal was more reasonable than others we had received. Within five days the work was started. Richard, the owner and another person were a little delayed because of heavy traffic. But they informed us and it was not a problem. The two worked efficiently as a team, the first day they worked quite late until about 7 p.m.; the next day was only a couple of hours. The clean-up was great, both gentlemen were very professional and we are left with a great product and a terrific job all round. We would certainly highly recommend this company for this kind of work.

Our bulkhead rusted out and with Hurricane Sandy approaching I didn't want to take any chances. My phone call was returned promptly early in the week and Richard came out for a quick estimate without me even needing to be home. After getting a detailed description emailed over I decided to go ahead and get the work done. I was squeezed in before the storm. The replacement went well. The area was clean and the old bulkhead removed and the new one went through the winter with no problems. I've already recommended Bay State Bulkhead to a friend.

Cleanup was good. Did complete job with one helper. Built new set of wood stairs which I feel were overpriced on his quote. Job was done within a few hours with one helper. New bulkhead has stop our leaking problem but it is not air tight which I expected. I did have one other quote which was a few hundred dollars higher. On the whole the job seemed very expensive. Might have to call him about the tightness of the new bulkhead and the few air gaps. Hope never have to replace again that's why I stated wouldn't use them again.

First of all no Bulkhead door door on the market is air tight. They are ment to be water tight only. The second thing that insults me is that you would complain about the price of $450 to remove an old set of wooden stairs and rebuild a new set out of pressure treated wood. I have been charging the same price for stais for the last 10 years. The educated well informed customer has always proven to be my best critic .

Though Bay State Bulkhead's initial reply for an estimate was prompt and professional, they 'lost' are records later on with the result being that I think our project was squeezed in and rushed. I did not appreciate the carelessness of the excavator in avoiding trees when backing up, and there are some aspects of the finished product that were sloppily completed.

The original bid was over a year old and not easily accessible . I don't understand how you can say we were in a rush. All of our Dig out projects take one day to complete. Yes we did squeeze you in to our schedule as soon as we could at your request . All the contracts that I have ever written for a dig out project explain that our heavy equipment does not hover in midair and that all though we try our very best not to damage any part of your lawn or shrubbery sometimes damage can be expected. Also our crane Is 12 feet tall and rather than cut any low hanging branches we try to pull them back out of the way, consequently they may suffer a little scaring we feel that it is better than removing them.We also specify a rough grading around the new bulkhead .

Other than some back and forth with calls and emails, the job went very well. Great work.
Description of Work: We needed a new bulkhead. After 4 weeks of going back and forth with email messages and phone messages, we finally connected and the job was done and done well! We no longer have water getting into our bulkhead stairwell. Richard is a fair and honest man. He does good work. The only suggestion I would have is for Bay State Bulkhead to install and paint the bulkhead. They do give you a can of paint but I wish it was included in the job so that it would be a project 100% done instead of 95% done. He is upfront about this in the estimate, but wish it was included.
