The job was to move a 2 bedroom lightly furnished apartment with no appliances to a house. It was estimated to take 2-3 hrs for 3 people, but instead, I was charged for 5.5 hrs and it cost $810... more than twice as much as we've ever paid to move the same amount of stuff. There was no packing; anything still unboxed was to be left alone. The apartment is lightly furnished with two heavy objects: a hutch and a couch. The hutch and beds were already disassembled. The apartment was located on the third floor with an elevator, which took the previous movers 1.5 hrs use when unloading their truck a year ago when we moved in. When they arrived an hour late, they did not park where I asked them to; instead, parking across my neighbors rented and assigned spots. They loaded carefully but took much more time than needed to mess with the stuff. The system was time-consuming: every box was loaded onto the hand-truck 3 times on it's way to the truck. First, they were rolled out to the staging area in front of the elevator and unloaded, then they were restacked onto the hand-truck and rolled into the elevator like they like they were packing a small truck. Lastly, the elevator was unloaded out to the truck. When we arrived at the new house, they took 1 hr to unload. My only gripe here was that they left the couch on the porch because they said it wouldn't fit. I didn't want them to try because they had already taken so long and I didn't want to be charged more. Instead, my husband and his friend had to bring it in (it was a tight fit, but they did it without damage). To be clear, they all worked hard and carefully. But I believe all this time they spent stacking, re-stacking, and rearranging of the stuff slowed them down. In retrospect, I should have asked the owner if he was able to commit to his estimate, even if he had to come out and look for himself. But even an over-the-phone estimate should still have been accurate to within an hour. Our family of 3 has moved several times in the last 4 years, and it has always taken way less time to load/unload, similar to the estimate of 6-9 man-hours Perry originally gave me on the phone (3 people taking 2-3 hrs).
