Jon of JP Works was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. He was incredibly helpful with ideas for big picture issues like room design as well as for smaller details like type and brand of fixtures. He was also extremely helpful with solutions to long-standing problems that we had a chance to fix during our renovations -- in a cost-effective way. We had complete peace of mind with both of our projects (finishing a basement and a bathroom renovation) because of Jon’s knowledge and attention to detail. The entire team he brought in were all very professional and dependable. I will absolutely hire him again for our next project.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel (new tile shower and floor), finish a basement
Here's why I cannot recommend JPWorks or its owner, Jonathan Worthley. After I contacted Jon, it took a long time for him to come take a look at my house to assess the needed repairs. He said he couldn't look at the outside of the house because there was snow on the ground, but he promised to send me quotes for the two replacement windows he could see were needed. Weeks went by. I had to bug him for the quote, and finally got it. After the snow melted, he and his team took a quick look at the outside of the house and quoted me a ballpark price for the repairs. I agreed, but no time frame or detailed estimate was forthcoming. More weeks went by. I emailed to ask if he was still interested in the work. His excuse for not providing an estimate was that they couldn't really see the extent of the damage so were not able to prepare the estimate. Next he proposed that I hire his team for an entire day to remove clapboards so the damage could be assessed, then reclose the outside of the house. I would pay for the labor plus any materials. I agreed to this. Eventually, two of his workers showed up, spent no longer than 30 minutes looking at the outside of the house, did not remove or replace any clapboards, and left. After another month with no estimate or any contact from Jon, I again emailed him asking him if he wanted the work. He promised to come by today with an estimate. He is now an hour and a half late. He hasn't called either. I spent years making service calls to people's homes. My clients always told me how much they appreciated my arriving when I said I would and doing the work I promised to do. If I had behaved towards my clients the way Jon Worthley has behaved towards me, I would not have lasted in business even six weeks. It has now been six months that Jon has been promising an estimate for repairing my house. I feel that I have been treated with great disrespect. If Jon had said he was not interested in doing the work, I would not have wasted that time waiting for him to do what he promised. I am done waiting for him and cannot recommend him or his company to anyone.
Description of Work: I needed repairs for water and insect damage to the siding and sheathing to my house, including new windows and some structural repairs.

A simple phone call could have resolved this issue. It’s been several years and no work has been done on this home. In retrospect, should just have said NO!

Jon measured once for the estimate and the window order in one visit. I was impressed because all the other contractors we talked with wanted to measure twice. 1) a quick measure for the estimate, 2) and come back a 2nd time, remove the trim, and measure to place the order. I was a little worried the windows wouldn't fit but they did fit. Jon answered all of our questions promptly and in a professional manner. Jon was very flexible in setting up the installation date. We went on vacation, then we were worried it would be too cold, or it would rain. We managed to agree on a good install date that worked for all of us. Jon's crew arrived between the stated start time (8:00 - 8:30am) and promptly began working. The crew worked well together and stayed focused on the job. No arguing, no wasting time. They ripped out the old windows and installed the new windows in one day. And they installed the outside trim. They ran into a few problems trying to get the windows out. But they were able to easily solve the problems due to their skill and experience. Jon worked calmly and meticulously to install the interior trim over the three day project. Jon squirted in expanding foam around the window frames to prevent cold air from coming into our home during the winter months. Other contractors wanted to put in fiberglass. Jon convinced us the foam would prevent cold air from coming in better than the fiberglass. The finished windows look great. While the temperatures are above normal for this time of year our condo seems to be warmer due to the energy efficient windows and good insulation around the frames. We'd hire Jon again for future projects.
Description of Work: Installed a bay window and three regular style windows in our condo.
Description of Work: They removed loose brick and a concrete slab at the front door in order to replace a rotted sill. Then they built a new porch. | |We knew they needed to increase the price once the sill was able to be accessed, but a clear increased amount was not given. The additional amount was much higher than anticipated. The work was good quality but the communication was not. | |Also, the original time frame was supposed to be "well into August" but the work was not begin until late October.

Jonathan was really great to work with. He had really good ideas and he is a very particular carpenter. His price was reasonable and better than most estimates I received. He was also very neat and kept the work area to a small area so as to limit the impact on the rest of the house. The end result was beautiful.
Description of Work: JP Works renovated an entry, rebuilt entry stairs and handrails, and converted a bedroom into a dining room. Also built a wall to separate the mud room.
Overall, the project went very well. Jonathan was patient during the design phase. He hired subcontractors who, in my opinion, did top quality work (I've seen bad and mediocre work). Subcontracting included demo and excavation, foundation work and other masonry, framing (best framers, ever), roofing, plumbing and heating, electrical, interior finishing (blueboard + plaster walls and ceilings), interior and exterior painting and custom wood floor installation (salvaged pumpkin pine). Jonathan himself participated in the demolition by cutting the old garage free of the main house. He leveled a section of subfloor in the main house by cutting the joists free of the main support beams and re-fastening everything (the floor was very off kilter). He installed windows and doors, laid the tile in the laundry, bath and mudroom, built decks and steps for the garage and exterior entries, and installed all of the finish carpentry (trim, molding, etc). All of the work was first rate. Jonathan is a talented carpenter, the tile floors are flawless, and the new structure blends perfectly with the main house. Husband and wife home owners survived as well. To be fair, the project ran over in time and cost but those were due primarily to the surprises we found when opening up the walls and roof of this 1870's house.
Description of Work: Jonathan Worthley (JP Works) acted as designer, general contractor and contractor for a large remodeling project which involved the removal of an old attached garage and the addition of a family room, laundry, full bath, mudroom/entry and 24' x 24' 2-car garage. The main house was built in 1870. The foundation is possibly hundreds of years older. There were clearly challenges.

Final product was very well done with excellent attention to detail. Price was in-line with estimate, although additional materials were needed to correct problems in joists and support structures that were discovered after floor boards were removed. The job took longer than expected due to master carpenter injuring his hand at another worksite. We were quoted 7 days of labor for 2 carpenters but their days consisted on arrival at 9-10 am, an hour for lunch, and then departure at 3 pm. The second carpenter ended up doing most of the work because ff master's hand injury (I'd hire him again in an instant). Even though the job ended up taking 3 weeks, they did meticulous work and the deck looks great and in much better shape.
Description of Work: Replaced existing wood deck with composite floorboards & railing systems. Redid entrance stairs & corrected sag in joists

For estimating purposes, I use an 8 hr day to establish the total hours that the job will take. In reality, the job took longer than the estimated days because my carpenters worked only 6 hr days. Also, there were unforseen structural issues that had to be corrected which we did for no additional labor cost. The homeowners were very understanding of these issues and we enjoyed working for them very much.

Overall the job went extremely well. It was accomplished in the time frame proposed, and we are pleased with the results. Also, our dog took a shine to Jon Worthley, but agreed to stay with us.
Description of Work: Jon Worthley came to the house to see the job and place a bid estimate. He told us to talk with a particular tile-supply company in the area in order to select the tile design we'd want, and then he'd talk with that company before placing the bid with us. This all happened, and Jon was the lower bidder, so we went with him. He re-tiled the front foyer and the main bathroom.

The job went very well overall. There was a misunderstanding about the day it would begin (one day off), but the painter was excellent and did a great job making up the time difference. Very professional. House looks great!
Description of Work: Jon Worthley was doing some tiling work for us when we got into a conversation about readying the house for sale, and he recommended painting at least the downstairs interior walls, including filling the holes where pictures have been hanging. He asked what our timeline was and said he had two people he turned to when painting was needed and could probably get it done on our timeline with one of those two.
