Description of Work: We had Ed give an opinion on costs and evaluate a home we were interested in buying. He was very thorough and experienced. Decided against the purchase, but would call him again.

.Ed came over to our new house for an initial 2 hour consultation. The house currently has 3 bedrooms and we wanted to upgrade it to 4. We had a number of ideas ourselves and went through the 4 options with Ed (family room, loft area, basement or attic). He gave us cost estimates for all our options. He also gave us recommendations on how to upgrade our kitchen / living area and our dining room. We got lots of great ideas and advice. It was $250 well spent and I would highly recommend this service. We look forward to working with Ed in the future

He was excellent. He was knowledgeable and pointed out how much some of the things we wanted would cost. He helped us give us an idea of what to offer for the house.

My husband owns an Auto Service in Westford MA and Ed Buckingham and family are customer's. I was introduced to Ed because I would be the one making all of the design decisions on our new home! Once I met Ed, I knew I was in good hands. I went to his office and saw the high tech CAD design software on his computer and was very impressed! Once I showed him the basic design of what we wanted and some additional information regarding out likes/dislikes he was able to produce a drawing in a few days. Ed was available 7 days a week from early in the morning until late at night, sometimes 10 PM. When I needed to change my design or to rearrange the kitchen, Ed was ready at a moments notice and the changes were made quickly, and I made several changes! I took my time during the design phase, as I made many changes and I never felt pressured or rushed. He was also there during construction anytime I needed him.
Description of Work: I would recommend Colonial Home Design to anyone who is looking for an architect for a new home design or for an addition! For a flat rate cost of only $7,500 I received the following: A complete set of construction documents (which included an electrical plan and Rescheck), interior and exterior 3D renderings, as well as unlimited hours of one on one attention from owner Ed Buckingham whether in person at his office or over a conference call while seeing Ed’s screen via Go-To-Meeting. I could actually show him my screen as well! Ed was available 7 days a week from early in the morning until late at night, sometimes 10 PM. If I needed to change my design or to rearrange the kitchen, Ed was ready at a moments notice and the changes were made quickly, and I made several changes! I loved that I was able to see my dream home, COME TO LIFE with the three dimensional design both inside and out. It was nice to be able to put colors and materials in the rooms and change them anytime I wanted before actual construction began. I took my time during the design phase, as I made many changes and I never felt pressured or rushed. He was also there during construction with cost saving tips that actually paid for the documents!

Exchanged a few emails then talked on the phone. Learned on the phone that I'd misunderstood -- I thought I was calling to schedule a time for him to come out and talk and learned that he doesn't come out to the site to talk and give an estimate; rather, you pay a fee for a more extensive first visit to the site for before deciding to go forward. Reasonable enough, but before I paid a fee I wanted to see some examples of projects start-to-finish and asked if he had photos of completed work (the projects on the web-site are all the 3D drawings). He said he often didn't make it out to projects during the construction phase and didn't have photographs of finished products. We wanted someone we were confident was paying attention to the work from start-to-finish. In the end we went with an architect who will also help supervise construction. Our architect has only given us hand drawings and detailed 2D drawings, so part of me is missing what we would have got with the 3D software Colonial Home Design is using, but I couldn't be confident enough in finished products based only on renderings.

I don't give estimates for construction documents, I give an exact quote within minutes of the initial call. It is a flat rate that is all-inclusive. Site visits during construction are billed by the hour (if needed). I do supply 3D renderings along with a complete set of documents. If a client wants me to build their house, I can. I have built over 100 custom homes throughout New England from 2,500 sq. ft. to 8,500 sq. ft. I have been in the business for 35 years and I am a licensed construction supervisor and a Registered Home Improvement Contractor, something most architects are not. My expertise comes from actually swinging a hammer in the field, not a textbook. I have been there, and I have done that many, many times. My time is valuable and I do charge for an initial consultation. However, I do apply the initial consultation fee to the documents. I have no idea why anyone would want to work with someone that "hand draws" in this day and age. I can move a window 100 times in the time it takes a "hand drafter" to erase one. If you can't see it in 3D, then how do you know what it will look like when it is finished? My unlimited Go-To-Meetings during the design phase could not be done with hand drawings, it is impossible. My clients use the free Chief Architect Client Viewer to "walk through" and "fly over" the completed design. In 2D you can only guess what it may look like. Of course if you are on a shoe-string budget, the best way to do things is never an option.

I called Colonial Home Design for a consultation on some renovations to my home. Ed came over within minutes after I called. Unfortunately, Ed seemed more interested in telling me what I wanted rather than listening to what I had in mind. He had me make out the check for the consultation fee to himself rather than the business, which I thought was a little sketchy. I definitely did not get my money's worth.

Response from Colonial Home Design
At the end of every initial consultation I make it a point to ask if the homeowner if they feel that they got their money’s worth. I have done over 400 consultations and only one client said that she did not. I did not accept any compensation for the 4 hours out of my day that I spent with her (2 hours travel time/2 hours on site). This person was told the same thing, as it is a standard practice of mine. He obviously thought that he got his monies worth or he wouldn't have paid me. This person was also given a substantial discount of more than 60% for living close by to my office. He asked me if I would like the check made out to Colonial Home Design or to me personally. I opted for the latter. A company check takes 3-4 days to process, the check made out to me personally was available immediately. If that makes me sketchy, then I am guilty as charged. A “D” for quality? I have no idea what that means. I don’t supply anything that has or has no quality. This is the only negative review about me or my business found anywhere on the web. Some people you just can’t please.

Fantastic!
Description of Work: My family has been in the custom home building for 50+ years and I have worked for national commercial construction firms since receiving by Construction Management Degree. My experience is from building High Rise Residential to Custom Hotels and Restaurants in NYC. I have worked with many high profile Designers and Architects and I can tell you that Ed not only understands Architecture, design, codes but he understands how to build. It was very important to me that I did not choose an Architect that can just draw me a pretty picture, but one that understand feasibility in constructing. I found Ed on the internet and when I spoke to him I knew he would be a great fit for me. Ed was available to me at 7am on Sunday mornings and late a night as we had online meetings to virtually walk through the house and go over every detail I needed help with. We reviewed window schedules, rough openings, door casing widths, roof pitch, stairs, deck size, kitchen island vs eat at counter options.... The detail he provided allowed me to place furniture in the rooms to determine locations for outlets during framing and let me know the size of my TV, couches, tables.... I virtually walked through the house and knew exactly what I was going to get. To make a long story short the pre planning and guidance that Ed allowed me to construct my 3000+ sf home in 16 weeks from digging the hole to move in. Our first child came home from the hospital and we moved right in. I would recommend Ed for any size project or style home you desire. If you do not have a construction backround or not he is a huge help! I look forward to working with Colonial Home design in the near future. ( I have never written a review about anything before but you have to give credit where credit is deserved)

We spoke for awhile on the phone, had a preliminary meeting and resolved the project with a final session. He has been available for a few further discussions and did not "nickel and dime" that additional help.
Description of Work: I have looked for someone to help me design my project for a long time. Ed was honest about the numbers and delivered a great product. More than that, he gave a lot of thought about a different approach I had not considered. You do not need an over-priced architect.

Ed met with us at hour home [at our convenience] and was available immediately. Ed came for a couple of hours immediately following to take measurements. From there he provided an initial design within a week. We worked and shared computer displays on several occasions thereafter to tweak it until we loved it! Ed was available all hours 7 days per week. He also saved us in time and money, as well as made recommendations for various contractors he has worked w/ successfully in the past. He made it so easy. I would highly recommend working with him and would do it again!!

Ed came and measured the whole house (even the areas that would not be included in the remodeling work!). He sat down with us. We told him what we wanted, he gave us his ideas, and we discussed back and forth different designs. Over the next few weeks he drew the preliminary plans, which he presented over the phone and through Internet conferences (we could see the progression of the work through the computer screen), so we could keep talking about ideas and design details such as windows, doors (down to furniture placement!), etc. At the end he gave us the finalized plans. He was highly professional and courteous all along. I will definitely recommend his work.

I had worked with Ed before, to complete other designs I had already started. This time, I hired Ed to handle the whole design process from start to finish. It was great to have a qualified, reasonably-priced professional to collaborate with. Ed's deep construction experience and cooperative attitude meant I didn't have to fret over all the details. Ed patiently drafted and modeled several versions of the design and we arrived at a final plan that our client loved. We were able to price the project very accurately based on the final drawings. We're now completing the framing of the additions, and our client is excited to see their new space taking shape. Ed's awareness of what we were after, his solid design experience and his expertise with the Chief Architect software all contributed to a successful plan.
Description of Work: I am a general contractor. We hired Ed to create an as-built model of our client's home, develop the design concepts we had discussed and produce final construction drawings. The project was an addition and renovation to an older cape house in Wellesley. Ed produced several options during the design development phase and completed window and door schedules as well as the energy audit for our construction and permitting documentation.

It only took a few weeks from start to finish, and we did not have any problem getting the permit from the town. He did an excellent job. I would recommend him to anyone, who is looking to do a complete new construction or even just a renovation on an existing house.

There, of course, were "bumps-in-the-road," during the process. However; those "bumps," were -- easily -- smoothed-out, by quick turnaround and professional suggestions ... most were addressed, quickly, with little impact, on the bottom line. Because we were not used to operating, in the contracting field, Mr. Buckingham's vendor suggestions resulted-in timely completion, closely monitored by CHD. Would I use them, again?" Easily said: "... you betcha'!
Description of Work: Due to a flooding/damage problem, we sustained, Colonial Home Design -- and its professionalism -- pulled us out of the 'fire'. When contacted, they rushed to our assistance and put-together a plan to get us up-and-running, as fast as possible. During the shortened design process, "Flexibility" was their middle name. If changes came-up, CHD blended them, with minimal impact. The changes, to our structure, suggested by Mr. Buckingham, brought resolution -- and improvement -- to our original design. CHD was a very positve addition, to our addition.

In January 2008, the high school Community Service Team chose to rebuild the bandstand on Westford Common for their 2008 spring project. We had a basic drawing from a builder, but no engineering plans to submit to the Town Building Commissioner or the State Architectural Access Board (AAB). Ed Buckingham saw about the project in the paper and volunteered his expertise. He was creative, professional, great with the students and worked with all the volunteers, appearing at meetings when it wasn't even required of him. Each meeting with the State AAB brought design changes, and Ed made them all as soon as we asked for the new plans. It was great. The bandstand was assembled in a day in May 2008 and dedicated in October. It would not have happened as smoothly without Colonial Home Design.
Description of Work: Ed volunteered his time and expertise to create all the design and engineering drawings for a replication of an 1861 bandstand on our town Common to be built by high school students. The plans included very demanding State specifications for handicapped access requiring several modifications. The work was done immediately and professionally when changes were required by either State or local officials.

Very professional and knowledgeable. We had an old screened-in porch attached to the back of our house that we wanted to replace with a larger four-season room and adjoining deck. Colonial Home Design provided us with 3D design renderings and architectural drawings that covered every tiny detail (inside and out) and provided us with a way to visualize various options we were considering for the new room and deck (different window types, flooring, light/electrical fixtures, color schemes, railings etc.) It was incredible. We were able to decide on the final design and see exactly what the room was going to look like before our contractor even started on the project. We absolutely love the room!
Description of Work: Colonial Home Design in Westford, MA provided us with comprehensive architectural schematics, 3D full color design renderings, and recommendations to replace an existing screened in porch (approx 12 X 12) with a larger four-season room that required replacing and raising the slope of the roof, maximizing window space, and installing decks on both sides of the new room.

Overall our experience with Ed was very good. His experience in construction showed in coming up with plans that were praised by our contractors. He did a great job getting us a design that looks like it came with the original house. The whole process was not without minor problems that needed to be solved however we worked out the details and he solved them to our satisfaction in a timely manner. Whenever any of the contractors had a question on the prints Ed was there to help answer any questions over the phone in real time during the construction.
Description of Work: I found Ed through Craigslist as I was searching for an architect to provide building prints and concepts for our two car garage mudroom addition. We had all ready started with another architect through a referral who was hand drawing all our concepts. We quickly found out that the just getting through the general layout phase with a hand drawn approach was going to get costly in a hourly service model as the turn around on a hand drawn concept was time consuming. We also felt that after the design was firm that making changes to the building prints if necessary would be time consuming and costly. After a few concepts with this architect we decided we needed someone with CAD tools to help us quickly visualize the space and this is when we found Ed. While Ed will tell be forthcoming that he is not a licensed architect, he has 20 years experience in residential construction as a general contractor and has parlayed that experience into a home design career. He utilizes a design tool called Chief Architect and is very proficient with the SW. Ed had the ability to host a live web meeting and build concepts of the space within a matter of minutes. His first appointment at the house he measured everything on the existing structure so he could put the original structure within Chief Architect. From there we had live web meetings via conference to work out concepts in real time. What I really liked about this model is we quickly narrowed down our scope of concepts which ultimately led to the final layout. Ed's business model is such that he charges a one time fee for the job (not a T&M model) which allowed us "unlimited" conceptual models in real time. His rule was once he starts on the building prints changes needed to be minimal and should the foundation layout change this would require a lot more work on his end so it would subsequently cost more. While we did not get in perfect during the concept change, the changes during the build phase we made were minor (removing a door adding a window) and included by Ed under the original quote. Ed is not a structural engineer however has contacts in the business so if your plans require to be stamped by a structural engineer that can be achieved. In my case this was another $300 or so and I was able to get my permits with the plans stamped by an engineer.

Description of Work: There were many services performed over the time we used Colonial Home Design. We needed upgrades and additions to our home including Built in Units, Outdoor Decks and Basement Redesign. Was expecting to see basic plans and design work. The owner invited me to his workplace and showed me in 3D exactly what the plans were and how it would be done in each case. Even more amazing was his honesty and his integrity in providing a price and adhering to that price. I would defnitely recommend this company to anyone looking for a company you can trust.
