Initial correspondences took several months before work actually presented to contractors. Design and submission to town for approvals went well. Work was completed in timely fashion. Follow up with David Schofield to finalize project has been a nightmare. Repeated calls have gone unanswered. Text messages and email messages have been ignored for months. There is always some excuse as to why the paper work to get sign-off on completion of project has not been finished, on a business trip, work being done on his house, working on it but very busy. The most annoying aspect is his refusal to respond. He just ignores all of my attempts to reach him. The septic system was installed in July. It's now almost November and David still has not completed the proper paperwork for us to get the compliance papers. Completely frustrated over his tactics, hence I am venting online.

Response from SCHOFIELD ENGINEERING GROUP
With due respect to the homeowner I feel I must respond to this review as I don't feel it portrays and accurate reflection of the situation. I was hired to design a septic system on this very difficult site. Design efforts were exhaustive with no stone left unturned to find the best solution for this site. These efforts took several months due to their complexity. The existing septic system was located on the downhill side of the house in very close proximity to a wetland. Initially soil testing was conducted near where the existing system was located and the area surveyed. After survey it was found that a system could not be sited in this area without significant disruption to the existing landscaping. Plumbers were then brought in to assess whether the pipe could be relocated to the front of the house and the system sited in the front yard. It was determined by two plumbers that the plumbing could not feasibly be relocated. Testing was then scheduled with the Board of Health (BOH) to retest in the front yard. Good soils were found in the front yard and this area surveyed. A design was prepared with the septic tank and pump chamber in the back yard and the leaching field located in the front yard. This plan was submitted to the BOH and revised as necessary to gain approval. After BOH approval a Conservation filing was completed which is a time consuming undertaking. Through the whole BOH design process the original contract amount was all that was billed. The contract allowed for billing of additional soil testing and design fees, but I felt it was adding a burden on the homeowner in an already difficult situation. After the system was installed, as built drawings and detailed narratives were completed and submitted to BOH and Conservation. Several hours of painstaking administrative and engineering work are required to get final approval from Conservation. This work was completed even after the relationship with the client had soured and there seemed little prospect of ever getting paid. The project was completed 100% and I have not been paid for the conservation related work to wrap up the project. In summary this was a very difficult project and was seen through to completion for significantly less than I was contractually entitled to. I will take lessons from this project that spur me to pro-actively communicate especially on the more difficult projects.
