Services we don't offer
We do not provide hardscape, drainage, or lighting work unless it is part of a larger, overall project which usually contains plantings. For example, we design and install front entry areas which often include a walkway, landing and stairs, drainage, along with new plantings and beds, irrigation, and lighting. However we do not have a business dedicated to just hardscape, or just lighting, or just drip line irrigation. These services are incorporated as a part of an overall solution.
I simply have ZERO tolerance for merchants that don't follow up. IF they don't want your business, they should just say so... I have ZERO tolerance for merchants who don't respect my time and jerk us around. My husband found her on Angies list, and contacted her on 6 December with apologies for being "slammed"... Showed up in January, while my foot was in a cast. Nice lady, lots of pictures and information regarding the types of plants and designs that would fit what I wanted... She promised at a minimum a design, which she will sell you for $250.00 +/-.... and so we asked for it... we did want it... Emails back and forth, more apologies, and on April 30th... last email stating "its on its way, Im sorry, blah blah, yadda yadda"... SO we measured, ordered mulch, loam and stone... We brought in a crew. They swailled, they moved rocks and boulders, they plowed, evened out the terrain, dug, laid the loam, the mulch and the stone... we planted. ITS GORGEOUS! We didn't even get from her, the courtesy of a QUOTE. I admit I was short on time when she came, I had other commitments. I admit she was nice and we were looking forward to it. Was it the cast and the crutches and the scooter? Maybe its because we are hispanic? Maybe because we don't smell like money? Maybe it was something we said? Seriously, if you want someone to actually follow through, DONT BOTHER with this merchant. Work with a professional that will acknowledge your business and respect your time. This is not that merchant.
Description of Work: Pretty much blew us off... One visit, lovely pictures of the work she does, and apparently knows what she's talking about. But after having to hunt her down, and email after email, and willing to pay $250 for the design... and the proverbial "checks in the mail" - we gave up... And contacted Leo at FieldStone Pros... we provided the loam, the stone, the mulch, the rocks, and they rocked and rolled and put things in place... and WE gardened. And NO WAITING FOR GODDOT...

Thank you for providing your feedback and perspective. This type of feedback helps us grow. Unfortunately, I did drop the ball on this customer...and it's not usual for us to do this. Our approach is very personalized, and the vast majority of our customers have been working with us long-term. We have earned the Angie's List Super Service award for 3 years in a row which also recognizes this. During May we implemented a system which better allows us to maintain a complete client management, and a more efficient process for design development. So far it is working quite smoothly and we are all better served by it. It is our expectation that going forward we won't have such issues.

They did excellent work on the edging and such but the consultation was less comprehensive than we hoped for - she was only here for about 15 min vs. the one hour promised in the deal. Also we weren't given a lot of options for plants - she ended up planting tomatoes, which we didn't really need because we have a CSA share. More personalization of selection would have been nice.
Description of Work: Provided consultation on garden issues and plans. Did some edging and planted a few plants.

I did have trouble getting an appointment initially. The consultant came and we spent an hour taking about what I needed done in my garden. I asked for an additional service--mulching and was given an oral estimate. On the day of the work, there were 3 people doing the clean up ---they were great. The deal was for time and the team almost finished all the garden. The additional mulching work took the afternoon. There was more mulch than I actually needed so they spread in another part of my yard. The bill for the additional work was more than the estimate.
Description of Work: the deal was for about a day consulting and cleaning up of garden.

Overall I thought they did a good job for the price.
Description of Work: I used a "groupon" coupon to have 200 daffodil bulbs planted for $199. The consultant was very nice, responsive, and offered other ideas beyond the daffodil planting but was not pushy. The work was done well, neatly, and on time. The display of daffodils was very nice. I would have liked to have more variety of colors offered (only yellow). I am a little disappointed now (year 2) that only about 1/2 of the bulbs seem to be re-appearing. Overall I thought they did a good job for the price.

I was planning to use her for the work, and we had talked about pricing and the work, but I haven’t been able to get ahold of her since. There was no follow-through, and I would not call them again. She was very good for the planning but I would not call them for not doing the actual service.

She was great, very pleasant and very easy to work with. The workers were very fast and efficient. It was a good experience. She had a lot of great ideas for what she will plan for next spring. Her workers did a great job with the mulch. The price was really good because of the special offer. With regard to quality, they did a great job. I wasn’t there, but I think she came on time.
Description of Work: Gardens by The Yard did landscaping for us. They cleared away old shrubs for us. We had a huge area that was overgrowing with old shrubs; they took that away and put in new mulch. She drew up a plan for next spring to put in new plants.

Gardens by the Yard did a great job! The owner came by to talk about placement of the bulbs and a few days later the workers came and planted them. They were very nice and professional. Their work was neat and they did exactly what we talked about. When the bulbs came up in the Spring they were fabulous. I had Daffodils everywhere! I can't wait for next Spring to see it all over again. It was an excellent value for the money.

We got off to a slow start with Gardens By the Yard due to some unforeseen circumstances. By the fall, the main yard cleanup was complete, new grass seed, landscaping and new plants were added. The work completed was amazing, professional and I'm looking forward to how my yard will appear in the Spring! Finally, I had Gardens return for the fall clean-up, and boy was that needed after hurricane Sandy. Thank you, Gardens by the Yard!!
Description of Work: Provided initial clean up and consultation services. From there, I contracted Gardens by the Yard to dig up the dead grass then aerate, fertilize and re-seed. I also had them remove a 3 foot area in front of my walkway, and add two knockout roses, one drift rose, some perennials and about four dozen daffodils.

The workers were very knowledgeable and helpful. It was a pleasure working with them. The owner came by to do an estimate, she also had wonderful suggestions to consider. She told us when the workers would be there and how long they would work. It was great. The workers were very helpful and even gave me tips on how to edge the bed myself. I appreciate what they did.

We were so impressed by Leisha, the owner, who spent 90 min with us going over our yard, and talking about both the clean up and what we could do beyond to improve our yard. (We just purchased an older home with a neglected yard, so it needs everything.) Leisha really listened to what mattered to us, and was very sensitive to our budget concerns. She told us to focus on the front yard first, since that's what we see when we walk in. Her crew was fabulous (hard-working and knowledgeable--as she pointed out, they are not college kids, but adults getting advanced degrees in landscaping-related fields!) The team cleaned up the front, edged the beds and planted some new flowers, and weeded and pruned around the whole house, so that we no longer have a jungle outside. Leisha also gave us advice and contact info for drainage in our driveway. And, during Hurricane Sandy, when I emailed my concerns about our drainage holding up (since we hadn't had a chance to install it yet), she offered to come out herself during the storm to help, and gave me instructions on my sump pump, since she knew my husband was out of town. Wow. She is amazing. I wish everyone cared that much about their customers-- and people in general. Thank you!

They did a beautiful job. She and her crew went above and beyond what was expected. I'm very happy with the results. The whole crew was polite, punctual, friendly, and neat.
Description of Work: Her crew came and looked at our grounds - we talked about what might be done to improve things. They came back and performed a good part of what we talked about. They took some overgrown plantings and helped re-plant and place about 10 new plants. I had purchased the big deal for landscape makeover.

I find Leisha (owner) to be very honest, and knowledgeable. She seems to know the best approaches, and best plants for a situation and can discuss them in depth. Not only is her plant knowledge excellent, she is able to resolve problems with drainage, grading, plant disease and pests. If there is a sale on plants she knows I want, she will let me know and pass on the savings. The crew is a dedicated bunch who are courteous, and have a genuine interest in their work. It's difficult to find high quality residential landscape design and installation in one company. I have been very pleased with what I get for the money spent.
Description of Work: I have used Leisha and her crews on my property for a few years and always have been pleased. In June, 2012 she provided design advice for the front of my house where a very old crabapple tree was recently removed. She proposed a few alternative approaches, and once we came to a consensus, shopped for the plants and her crews regraded the area and installed the plants based upon a plan she drew up. Mid-summer, my back was uncooperative, so I called upon them to do some general garden bed maintenance. In September her crews removed large shrubs, rebuilt the beds with fresh soil and planted new ones. I am a realtor and am now using Gardens by the Yard to prepare houses before they go onto the market.

As described in the previous paragraph, the entire job went very well indeed.
Description of Work: My lawn was a disaster of weeds and bare areas. Leisha, the proprietor of Gardens by the Yard, surveyed the situation, recommended the treatment, and stated a fair price. The work required shallow tilling, repair of a disrupted watering system, sodding, leveling, seeding and rolling. All of it was carried out with professional skill and speed. The prospects of a decent lawn by next season now appear to be excellent.

I loved working with Leisha and her team. They really did a wonderful job. Over the first few times I spoke with Leisha, we designed a plan for the yard. My two main priorities were 1) make sure the yard is low maintenance, and 2) have some color which will last throughout the seasons (not just plants that are beautiful for 2 weeks a year and dull the rest of the time). Leisha executed on both of the these fronts. I strongly recommend her.
Description of Work: Cleaned up our yard, created a design, and then executed on the design. Included: removing of poor topsoil and replacing with new soil, lawn seeding, planting beds, adding new plants.

The work was under estimated - the bushes were more work to remove than quoted. The labor was scheduled across several weeks with no contact from the landscaper on progress. Very disorganized. I received a discount for the underestimation but needed to pay $205 over the $299 coupon price.
Description of Work: Landscaper came out to the house and talked about opportunities in my yard and various types of flora to plant to cover all seasons. The work then entailed clearing grass around 2 trees and placing mulch. Clearing 2 bushes and placing mulch. Clearing tree limbs accumulated in the yard from spring landscaping.

This review is surprising to me. Up front, there was an understanding that there would be costs for mulch, loam and a dump fee for the sod which was removed, which would be beyond the "Deal" package. These materials were never intended to be for free and I had to pay a $59 dump fee for a large amount of sod and the debris from the trees. Additionally, these services were provided as an estimate and not a quote. After the first day of work, when it became obvious that the hemlocks were much more difficult to remove than previously expected, I communicated as such. On that first day we had exhausted the "Deal" hour allowance, and gone beyond the "Deal" hours by 2.25 hours which I communicated and immediately offerred to swap out the Deal flowers for an additional hour of labor. That meant 1.25 hours of labor was beyond the Deal amount. At that time I also communicated that I underestimated what it would take to remove the trees. This customer thanked me for my honesty. So, to allow us to complete the work which we had discussed, I suggested that I finish the tasks, without charging any additional for the labor, and remove some debris which this customer had sitting in a large pile in the back yard. I expended another 6 hours of labor, without charging, to finish this work. I thought this was very generous and felt confident he would feel similarly...which is why I am surprised by this review. To summarize...there was no indication in the Deal nor in my followup communications that loam and mulch would be delivered and provided free. Additionally, I provided another 6 hours of labor, without charge in order to deliver the services which I committed to. I am very sorry that there were poor feelings on the part of this customer, but I do stand by the approach and fairness.

The flowers bloomed on schedule. The only thing we were unaware of was the height difference. We mixed both bulb types and there was a very large difference in appearance. Overall it was a very good experience and one we are considering repeating once we do a bit more research about the flowers we choose.

Initially it was rough going. Purchased the late summer cleanup deal with Gardens by the Yard. Initially had difficulty getting time scheduled with Leisha to come by. In the time that passed, I ended up weeding all of the gardens myself (our initial plan to use the deal). So, once I had time scheduled with Leisha I explained my two goals are:Meet with my wife to detail what could make our garden more colorful and better organized and to add mulch to our gardens.Crew came the following week and set down mulch everywhere. They worked fast. My wife and Leisha connected a few weeks following and worked out suggestions to make the gardens really work in the long run.Overall, very happy with the experience.

The company owner came to my house for consultation. That went well with many planting ideas exchanged. However, at the time I just wanted a garden clean-up, so we discussed the extent of the work and the work schedule. Leisha's crew came and did the work about a week later. The work went well and I was generally pleased with the results. Nevertheless, there were a couple of things I thought were sub-standard.I. Leisha said in advance that her crew would not be taking away the waste material: cuttings, sod, and the like. i found this a bit odd since most landscapers will truck the stuff away. However, I said it would be OK if the waste went into paper trash bags which I would provide. I agreed to put the bags on the street for City pick up on my normal trash pickup day. It took 2 weeks of trash collection to get this done .. there were a more bags than I expected.

As indicated, I told the member and his wife that I had to pay a dump fee for removal of materials, which i would either pass onto them, or we'd be happy to fill the town debris bags. Richard agreed to have us do the latter. They had a choice. This is industry standard, except for lawn clippings which is built into the price of the mow. We do not mow lawns. It is unclear to me why this would be deemed less than professional...industry standard practice, which was communicated up-front and agreed to.

GARDENS BY THE YARD offers the following services: Only 11-time Angie's List Super Service Award winner in Massachusetts Landscape Industry. Exceptional horticultural and landscape methodology knowledge. Sustainable and ecologically responsible landscapes. Specific practices include lawn minimization strategies, pollinator gardens, and naturalistic-styled garden spaces. Glorious planting beds, grading, drip line irrigation, masonry (walls, walkways, patios, firepits, outdoor kitchens), water drainage improvements, organic plant and soil care, surface water management. Our landscape design & build expertise transforms spaces for our clients to enjoy and share.
