We chose this company because they had positive reviews on Angie's List. They responded to our call quickly. I think that their prices are on the high side.

I have used Winters for the past five years. They have done everything from to a large addition with a master bath to routine equipment cleanings. I was always happy with their work and thought the prices were on the high side but justified by excellent service. Today I called to get quote for a few small things (replace a toilet, shower faucet, and install a water pressure booster) and to look at a big job (move the laundry). The representative scheduled a quote visit but then told me there would be a $40 visit fee. additionally it seemed that the fee would not be credited in the event they did work. I'm not used to paying a little for the privilege of paying a lot. The representative tried to sell me a $65/year retainer program that would give me free quotes, priority emergency service, etc. This seems to me to be a fee to provide the quality of service I'd expect normally. At my expected rate of plumbing service (every 2-3 years) I'd be paying $200 in additional retainer fees for every service call. Before submitting this review I looked at some of the other recent reviews and it seemed to confirm that Winters has really jacked up it's prices. It seemed they frequently rely on the standard price book for plumbing trades. This book is the worst case, can't lose money tool for tradespeople. If I need emergency service, I'm alright with paying at this level. When I have someone come to give a quote based on the real work required for the job it's usually significantly less. I am very sorry that I'll have to be looking on Angie's List for a new plumber.
Description of Work: None. Winters wanted a $40 visit fee to provide a quote. I was told it would not be credited to the price of the work if I accepted the quote.

After diagnosing my furnace problem myself, I called Winters to request replacement of an inducer fan, and an appointment was set up (call it Day 1). They neither showed up nor called me. I called them, and they explained there were emergencies elsewhere. On Day 7 they came (though late) and technician C. Childress very competently determined the needed replacement part and ordered it, promising to install on Day 9. On Day 9 I waited around and they called me, saying the part had not come in. On Day 16 technician J. Gosselin very competently installed the new fan. The technicians were professional, but the service was quite slow. Since I usually live elsewhere, two hours away, I did not appreciate the first no-show, when they did not even have the courtesy to call me. Also, when scheduling the last two appointments, they could not be specific about a time, merely promising to be there "after 10:00". In explaining the no-show and the late arrival, the office person said there were a number of "no heat" emergencies in the area, and customers with service contracts or long-term relationships got higher priority service than new customers.

Overall I am extremely please. I thought I would have a major repair or replacement part. With any service I fear being charged for things I do not need or are not necessary. Winters seemed very honest to me in that respect.
Description of Work: I had an issue with intermittent hot water with my hot water tank. Winters came out and inspected and relit the pilot light which fixed the problem. I was only charged the standard technician dispatch fee.

They answered the phone, booked an appointment soon, and showed up on time. The representative was very friendly and discussed many heating options with us, quoted some rough numbers. He was going to send an estimate in the mail, but we didn't get one. I called them back and reminded them, but still didn't get anything written. I didn't pursue further. My impression is that they seemed to know what they were talking about, but I'm not sure what the snafu was regarding sending an estimate.

I'm satisfied with John's work overall. What I'm not satisfied with is with the price Winters charges for this kind of work. $2000 for 3 hrs of work and a new water heater is a little excessive.
Description of Work: My water heater burst on a Sunday afternoon and I called Winters Plumbing to a Monday visit. John arrived at about 9:00 on Monday and preceded to show me the price list. Being kind of stuck with a busted water heater I agreed to continue with the work. John took out the old heater and installed the new one. The work took about 3 hrs.

Winters was good to talk to on the phone and the technician was right on time. He was very polite and professional, a thoroughly nice guy. It was pretty unbearable upstairs without the AC and he was able to return to the office, pick up a new thermostat for us and replace it all in the same day. He also unclogged a pipe. I was surprised at how much Winters charged, though I can't say I know what these things cost as we had never had this problem before. My gut feeling though was that their charges were on the high side. Though he was polite about it, I also got the feeling that the company really pushes their technicians to sell their service plan to customers. He kept offering to pick up the form himself later if I decided to sign up. I read it over and it looks like a good deal for $65, but I was still in shock from writing a $500+ check for the repair so I wasn't really in the frame of mind to pay out more money, at least not the same day.
Description of Work: We have central air conditioning in 2 zones, upstairs and downstairs. Our upstairs AC was not working. The thermostat needed replacing and a pipe was clogged which had caused some water to accumulate in the pan at the bottom of the unit switching it off.

They did an excellent job. We had a hard time, even with Angie's List help, finding someone who really knew steam heat and who actually gave us reliable information about steam heat. Winters came in with the best solution and with the best price though. It ended up being a great job, and we were very pleased with it. The only problem was that we had some trouble getting the documentation on the boiler, and this job was done four months ago. This information finally came today, when a worker brought it to me, after I called several times to get them to send it to me. But they still did a great job.

The plumber was punctual and polite. He told us that we needed at least a rebuild of the toilet, possibly reseating the toilet because it rocked a little, possible replacing the flange, and he recommended replacing the toilet which would then be guaranteed "for life". The minimum price of the repair would have been approximately $450. We hired someone else to do the job, and now the toilet works perfectly well.

They were very good. They were one of the most polite and efficient companies that we contacted, and they were a great HVAC company. They went the extra mile to do jobs that we hadn't planned. The price was a little higher than others that I compared though, but we decided to go with them because they were so polite, and they put on boot protectors so they wouldn't dirty our floors.

Disastrously. They charged us $1900 for something that did not solve the problem at all, and then were unresponsive about having failed in their diagnosis.
Description of Work: They were supposed to solve a problem of backflow of water from our pipes (which was caused when city pipes were backed up during rain storms). They installed two valves which they guaranteed would prevent recurrence of the problem. In fact, the problem of backflow is that water could not drain out (because our roof rain drains into this line). The valves they installed did nothing but make the problem worse. We only discovered this when engineers from the city came out to analyze the problem and told us Winters had made it worse, not better. Winters never responded to calls from the city's engineers asking for an explanation of their work.

I did not have the work completed due to the unreasonably high price.
Description of Work: I have used Winters for almost 10 years. I have always been willing to pay a premium for good quality work. However, in this case, I was sorry to see that they tried to rip me off on their price. I do not think I can use them again in good faith. I needed a simple job completed to change the venting on my water heater. A Winters plumber came to my home (he was an hour late) to look at the work and gave me the Winters fixed price based on his price sheets. The price came to $850. This felt rather high and I asked him why it was so high. He did not have a good reason. The work was estimated at two hours and materials were about $75 (some vent pipe). I ended up having the work done by another licensed plumber (I found through Angie's) for $300. A $550 difference in my view is not a fair price to quote even if you are using a fixed price model. Finally I received a "high pressure" pitch to replace the water heater all together and was told the tank was already at the end of its life. I found out later the tank still had at least 3-4 years to go.

We called Winters for repair or replacement of an A/C unit's clogged drainpipe. They canceled their first scheduled appointment on the day they were to come out to assess the problem and present an estimate for the work required, because rain was forecast and they "might" need to look at an outside part of the system. Their next available time to do an estimate was approximately two weeks later. We set that date. On the appointed morning, they called to say that they would need to change the appointment again, no reason given. I was told that they would call again, but they never did call after that. We eventually contacted another provider from Angie's List.

They told me they charge $70 just to give an estimate. I found that distasteful. I was stunned when they told me this on the phone, and went ahead with making an appointment. I later thought better of it and canceled. I understand that they're investing employees' time when they come to my house to give an estimate. But at the point of giving an estimate, I'm checking them out, and they're checking me out. We're both investing time in each other. Generally, the vendor recoups the cost through the work performed, and this job will likely run to $7000 or more, so it felt like they were nickel-and-diming me to try and charge me for the privilege of having them work on my house.

I called on a Friday and was able to get an appointment first thing Monday morning. The technician arrived on time and was wonderful to work with. Winters' pricing is all up-front - they have a big book of parts and the cost includes installation. It seemed a bit pricey, but I also appreciated that I knew exactly how much it was going to cost and wasn't worrying about being billed by the hour. Parts were readily available and both projects were completed within an hour or two. The convenience and professionalism of Winters were worth a few extra dollars to me.

I found the prices to be very high, it also took about an hour for the routine maintenance. They checked things on the HVAC and when they did find something that needed to be done, it was an extra 600 dollars on top of the routine maintenance fee of 400 dollars. They also do not offer a service contract which is something I was looking for.
