The work went very quickly and could leave for my holiday weekend.
Description of Work: My bath tub drain was stopped up with long hair. Winter's worked hard to try to get someone to my house before I left for vacation that day. He came and took care of the problem in about a half hour. The price was very high, but I was able to leave and have the drain fixed for someone who was coming into my house the next day. This was July 4th weekend.

The main reason we called Wilson was to fix one toilet. While the toilet was fixed we were incredibly disappointed with the price. We were also very disappointed with the the company's focus on upselling constantly. Four hundred dollars to spend 40 minutes installing $60.00 worth of parts seems like highway robbery, but they spent an incredible amount of energy trying to convince us to replace the entire toilet for $1,000.00
Description of Work: Inspection of plumbing in 3 bathrooms. Inspection of kitchen drain and incinerator. Replaced all toilet valves, etc., in one toilet.

When I called to schedule the appointment I was told I would be charged $77 for the visit whether or not the work was performed. After looking at the job Andy gave me and my husband an obnoxious hard sell, asking us to pay $2,848.15 for installing the icemaker line and servicing it for ten years (and changing the filters regularly) and rebuilding the toilet tank and servicing that for ten years. When we refused the hard sell and asked for a minimum price, he charged us $1,266.19 for the work with a "regular" one year guarantee. There were three intermediate options as well. Andy returned one day to rebuild the toilet tank, and another plumber came to install the icemaker line; however, the line was installed poorly and incorrectly, and Andy had to return (he came several days later) to reinstall this line totally. He apologized for our inconvenience.
Description of Work: Andy (the branch manager) came to install an icemaker line from our kitchen sink to a new refrigerator, and to repair a leaky toilet. He installed the piping (line) for the icemaker and performed a "major tank rebuild" on the toilet.

Response from Winters Home Services
THE INITIAL VISIT WAS SET UP WITH THE CUSTOMER AWARE OF THE MINIMUM SERVICE FEE OF $70.00. ANDY WENT OUT ON 4/18/07 AND QUOTED A VARIOUS AMOUNT OF OPTIONS FOR WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. ONCE THE THE MEMBERS DECIDED WHAT OPTION THEY CHOSE, ANDY WENT AHEAD AND ORDERED THE PARTS. ON 4/23/07 (ONCE THE PARTS HAD ARRIVED), WINTERS RETURNED AND INSTALLED THE ICE LINE AND PERFORMED A MINOR REBUILD ON A TOILET. ON 5/10/07 WINTERS HOOKED UP THE ICE LINE TO THE REFRIGERATOR. ON 5/14/07 THE MEMBERS CALLED IN AND SAID THAT THEY HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE INSTALLATION AND THE WATER LINE WAS BACKWARDS. THE FOLLOWING DAY, 5/15/07 THE SUPERVISOR ANDY WAS BACK ON SITE AND REINSTALLED WHAT NEEDED TO BE CORRECTED.

I have not had any more problems since the job was done. They did a very good job and they were easy to work with. They also did a good job cleaning up after they finished the job. I was very satisfied.
Description of Work: They unclogged the main water line that runs from my house to the sewer line because it kept backing up. They also took a picture of the main line to see what was causing it to back up and they found that it was being clogged up by tree roots, which they removed. They had to put a cap on the main line.

Andy, the technician, was very courteous and patient in explaining to me what he was doing and what I needed to do to maintain the furnace after work was done. Gene Catardo, owner of the company, remained in touch to make sure things are OK. All in all, I feel good that I can rely on this company when I need them. Punctual. Professional, knowledge and ability to answer a problem and explain it. Andy, the technician, instilled confidence in me that the problem with my furnace would be fixed. Expensive. I was offered a deeply discounted contract to clean 2 furnaces and cover maintenance on them for 1 year. It was a good deal.
Description of Work: Leaky furnace pipes. Repipe Hartford loop. Removed 2" X 1 1/2" bush inside of boiler. Removed all 1 1/2" pipe. Repiped full size 2". Lowered Hartford loop to maintain manufacturer 10 year block warranty. Installed blow down valve. Cleaned pigtail on boiler.

Our heat went out overnight and we called just before 10am to have someone come and fix it. Their estimated time of arrival was at 11am-1pm that same day. The technician (Jack) arrived at 11:10am, and quickly assessed the problem. Initially estimated that we needed a new circulator pump, which would have been an extra $300, but he was able to just tighten and then drain and purge the system, to save us some money. He was very professional, and we had our heat back on within 1.5 hours of his arrival. They do require a credit card number over the phone and will charge $70, but that fee is waived when you have any work done.

I was very happy with the work that they did for me. I wanted to get some advice on different types of water heaters I could install that might be more energy efficient. Don, the technician who came out to my house was helpful with this and gave me some ballpark estimates on a number of different options I had. I then spoke to Ian, one of Winters' formal estimators, and told him in detail what my thoughts were about the whole situation. He was extremely helpful and ended up not having to come out to my house since I realized that the cost to go to a more ''energy efficient'' system would only cost me a lot of money, not be the improvement to my house I thought it would since the warranties don't move with ownership, and wouldn't actually be more efficient since I'm only 1 person. Don then came and installed the new heater quickly, neatly and efficiently. Very happy with these guys.

Winters' plumber arrived promptly at the arranged time on a Thursday. Said he might be able to fix the leak then but he'd rather come back Monday morning when he could have some help. He duct-taped the pipe as a temporary repair. (The tape leaked over the weekend.) The plumber quoted $70 for his initial visit and $1600 as a flat rate total for replacing the leaky steam pipe. We scheduled an 8 am Monday morning appointment for the pipe replacement. When the plumber hadn't shown up by 8:30 Monday morning, I called Winters and was surprised to hear that he was on another job, and wasn't scheduled for our repair until the afternoon. Not willing to pay $1600 to sit around, I canceled the repair visit and drove to work. My wife then signed us up for Angie's List and we found a highly recommended plumber who arrived at the scheduled time on Wednesday and replaced the steam pipe for the cost of parts and labor. The work cost $295, saving me $1300 over Winters' flat rate.
Description of Work: Came to look at a leaking steam pipe in the basement, wrapped the steam pipe in duct tape as a temporary fix, gave us an estimate on the repair and arranged a repair visit.

I called on a Tuesday and they were able to come out on Wednesday. The man arrived during the promised window, made sure that he did not get anything dirty, explained exactly what he was going to do, and did it. He had to open an access panel which had been painted shut and told my wife that it ''might not be pretty''. She told him to go ahead and he was careful and efficient. He answered other questions regarding drains and was courteous and helpful.

Good news was the job was done expeditiously and as neatly as these things can be done. The cost of the repair, while expensive, was not out of line with how plumbers are priced around here these days. The surprise was that the price did not include the cost of a separate visit to repair the cut up dry wall. At $275 that nearly doubled the cost and I didn't expect it. They did do a very nice job, however. I have found Winters to be competent, reliable, but expensive, especially for smaller jobs priced by the book.
Description of Work: Had a leaking garden faucet. Repair required replacing the pipe with the shut-off valve that went into the house and required cutting holes in the wall and ceiling of a room in the lower level to find the pipe, then remove the bad pipe and faucet, replace with a new one. Involved cutting plaster, soldering, replacing and patching dry wall.

Ralph the plumber was very knowledgeable and explained the work in great detail. He did a thorough job and we haven't had a leak since. The receptionist at the office is a different story. She left a message the day before the original appointment notifying me of a time change. I called the next morning to reschedule, but she said she would try to arrange the original time. She never called back that day and the plumber showed up at the rescheduled date I had asked for but didn't receive any confirmation for. On another occasion, the receptionist neglected to tell me to switch off the boiler for a routine maintenance. The plumbers showed up but couldn't work on a scalding hot boiler: she wasted their time and mine.
Description of Work: Replacement of 1930's tub overflow pipes and drum trap due to both a clog and leak. During kitchen remodel the ceiling was removed making access to tub pipes easy. Otherwise this repair would have been much more expensive.
