On more than one occasion, they have gone above and beyond to help me out and make sure things are right. In one case, the general contractor for a project we were working on disappeared and Pete was instrumental in helping me clear some of the city inspections (like the smoke detectors) that the GC left hanging.
I know that sometimes people have trouble reaching Pete, and I know why. I have personally never had that happen, so I gave them an A on responsiveness based on my own experience, but if you do have trouble getting ahold of them and you can afford to wait a week or two and try again, your patience will be rewarded.
The prices charged are reasonable: fair, but not low. If you're determined to find the cheapest electricians in the area, I'm sure Angie's List can help with that but you're on the wrong page at the moment. Since bad wiring can burn down my house with me inside, I'd rather skip the cheapest and get the best guys I can find. These are them.
the second time less lucky. First, 2 younger guys showed up about 90 minutes late and assessed the job. Because they were late they wouldn't have time to do everything on my list, so we prioritized. After that 15 minute chat they went to lunch and came back about 90 minutes later.
I have old horsehair plaster walls and the outlets were installed into the laths rather than studs. So, I asked them to cut holes in all the walls and install the outlets against studs squarely and solidly with new uptocode outlets. I also had them install 2 new outdoor lights.
I ended up having to redo every single outlet--they were all crooked and all of them were installed way to far back into the walls. In some cases I could just get extenders and that made it fine. In one case the outlet doesn't work at all. It took me about 6 hours to fix them all, plus another 10 or so to fix all the walls (this latter job was expected).
We were again billed relatively fairly. However, they charged us for a full hour for the initial 15 minutes, plus rounded up the second part up about 30 minutes, meaning quite a bit of overcharging. I'm used to the concept of rounding up to the next hour for billing, but twice in one day was excessive.
I couldn't prove anything at first but I couldn't find a number of my tools and batteries afterward. My basement -- where everything is stored -- was a bit cluttered/messy, so I assumed they were just misplaced. However, 6 months later we completely emptied the basement for another job and I set up a shop in a new shed, where every single tool I own was put into new, organized places. I ended up missing 2 batteries, the charger, and a drill. Both missing batteries were the older type so it wasn't a huge loss, but the charger was the newer kind and that was somewhat expensive to replace.
During this cleanup process, I found an opened bottle of apple juice that had about 1/3 drank from it (we store home brewing supplies in the basement). Exactly 2 other people had been in our basement other than the workers in that time: me and my wife. So I am 100% certain one of them did this (I realize it's petty, but it's also kind of gross and unacceptable). As for the tools, I honestly can't think of where else they would have gone (and it's now been almost 2 years since the work was done).
So in the end I had to find a new electrician for future business. While I'd give the first experience nearly an A, the second was such an abysmal F that I can't really forgive it.
I feel tentative about this review since I never contacted him about the problems. The owner's work was great and he was quite responsive, so if there's a way to ensure only the owner will do your work I guess go for it. I honestly forgot all about this experience until the site asked me to submit a review.
"I am extremely disappointed reading this review. We stand behind all our work and would fix anything that was wrong as a result in our work. The odd thing about this review is when the bill was sent out there was no complaints or problems brought to my attention. I do understand it is impossible to please everyone but this customer seemed to be happy with the work and mentioned none of these complaints he writes about in the review. The other odd things are if you are unhappy with something its best to explain this to the service provider than to not say anything, pay the bill with no mention then TWO YEARS later write a very disappointing review. I have many repeat and long term customers who are very pleased with our work and if there is ever any issues we discuss them and correct them. Again I am very disappointed reading this review but I just dont understand why TWO YEARS later this review is written."
"Hi (member name removed), My apologies for not getting back to you. I have been dealing with some medical issues and several doctors appointments. This has been making my response to some called delayed or even missed. If you are still interested in a quote I would be more than happy to provide you with one, thank you and again I apologies for the no response this is not typically my nature, I try to respond to everyone."
Dimasi does not itemize a price list, but charges a flat fee for a set amount of time. The customer can negotiate the number of tasks to be done in that timeframe.
Peter came on time for the estimate. He even made a point to wipe his feet thoroughly on the doormat outside the house, a detail that did not go unnoticed. He was not the least expensive estimate we received, or the most expensive. He made our panel replacement a priority and came within two days to do the repair/replace, as he deemed it a safety hazard. He was thorough, efficient and reasonable.
We also had Peter quote us on installing power and cable above our fireplace for mounting our television, but at $600+ we decided to take that project on ourselves.
Peter also found creative ways to run cable to give us new light switches at the top of a stairway. We hated going back into a cold garage to turn off the lights after we got upstairs... and he installed a new outdoor flood light with motion sensor.
All in all it was a top notch job and it was completed in one day. I highly recommend PW DiMasi Electrical Contractors.
Peter has been out to my house quite a few times for multiple jobs since I purchased the home three years ago and I can say that he is my favorite contractor: the easiest to work with, communicate with, schedule, and above all trust 1000% (not a typo!). Peter has installed new light fixtures, replaced old pull chain light switches with switches in the wall -- operating the same old fixtures (one day I'll have the $ to upgrade) -- and added new outlets. He also installed an outdoor security light which is a great convenience when we let our dogs in the back yard (their motion turns it on and it times off) and it stopped some teens from using our yard as a midnight shortcut. His most recent job was to entirely replace the wiring throughout one apartment of my two-family home. His work has always been perfect with no need to follow up.
Peter has also made recommendations to me about lighting items I can get myself at home depot and use in regular receptacles to have motion detector lights in my back hall and basement, talking me out of changes that would have meant more work for him. His estimates are extremely reasonable, he stands by them, and he gives a discount to angie's list members. It's great value all around.
Peter is always very clear about job requirements, totally accommodating about batching work according to my budget limits at a given time, and very responsive by email or phone. Once he injured his hand on a job he was at before mine, and called to ask if it was all right if his right-hand man (pardon the pun) came with another assistant to do the work. I'd already met him and trusted his workmanship fully as well. They came right on time and of course did a fabulous job. So even broken bones do not deter a job well done!
Peter and his team clarify every detail, for example do I want them to spend the time patching drywall with electrician's plaster before they leave, or do I want to save the money and take care of it myself.
It would take all day to describe all my positive impressions. These guys actually love their work and appreciate their customers. I absolutely recommend you work with Peter DiMasi for any electrical-related work.
If I ever run out of needed upgrades, I will miss Peter DiMasi! Fortunately that day is not coming soon.
