Cal provided exceptional honest service. He took our basement from dark, unfinished, concrete, to functional, light, and inviting. Had to get around multiple challenges of Covid, holidays, weather, and a new baby - congratulations-, but persevered. We love our new basement. This was our first remodel job, so we were hesitant. Called Cal based on prior reviews and was very pleased! His quote is his quote. Honest and pleasant to deal with and was flexible with our scheduling. Kinda hate to let more people know.

We are extremely happy with his work. Cal provided valuable suggestions and was a great design partner. His finish carpentry work was especially beautiful. We also appreciated how respectful Cal and his subcontractors were of our space. Additionally, Cal made sure we never encountered any issues with inspections or permits. Cal also went above and beyond to get the job done right - even covering a refinish of our stairs - at no additional cost to us - when the initial finish did not come out well. We would happily recommend him to any of our friends or family.

Cal turned our gross dungeon of a basement into a bright, spacious, usable area with separate rooms, storage closets, and a full bathroom. He did beautiful work and his subcontractors were all lovely and reliable. His price was very reasonable (I got 6 quotes and his was right in the middle), he stuck to his initial timeline, and was an absolute delight to work with.

Cal and his team were detail-oriented, flexible/adaptive, and their work is high quality. Special shout out to his HVAC, carpentry & framing, drywall & plastering, tiling, plumbing, and painting crews that were brought in on our project! Finishing the project in fall of 2020, they created a very special space for us to enjoy, adding approx 600 sq feet of finished space including a new bathroom and creating a nice utility room with additional storage (~200 sq ft). In particular, we noticed the HVAC work had really helped to rebalance air handling in our home, noticing our furnace not working as hard through the past winter. Cal is very communicative and transparent, always thinking about cost-effective solutions, works hard with the Town for permits etc, and is more than happy to work with the homeowner. If you have a basement finishing/remodel project, Cal and his Team can't be beat!

Cal's team finished my approximately 2,400 sq ft basement (bath, bedroom, kitchenet, playroom, theater, gym and game room) . I received 4 bids and Cal's was not only the lowest price but, more importantly, he was upfront and honest. He worked closely with me to get a detailed understanding of the job. He was also very practical and didn't look to rack up contractor fees. His team was professional and worked very quickly. He also helped coordinate with HVAC and glass contractors that I contracted myself. Cal has a deep understanding of the best materials for basements and I'm very pleased with the flooring, bathroom fixtures, countertops, etc. He also came back and addressed a few minor repairs after completing the job. Overall, I wouldn't work with anyone else and I would not hesitate to have Cal come back and do work on my house.

Cal and his team were great. We had 900 sq. ft. of our basement finished in 2020. What impressed us the most was his approach to the job along with valuable suggestions, his knowledge of the work to be done .and the skillfulness of his team. He adhered to his original quote, there were no extra charges for changes within the quote and the job was completed timely. I would use him again and recommend him without reservation.

I received a couple quotes for a full basement renovation (billiards area, dart alley, TV room, custom bar, bathroom, storage room, etc.) and Cal was the only contractor that took the time to not only listen to my suggestions but also offer some additional ones that would improve the layout and functionality of the room. He actually provided me with drawings of his vision(s) for the space, so I could conceptualize what he was saying. The quote received was comparable to the others I received, but the big difference was it was not prices and not an estimate to do the job. Cal told me that unless I made a significant change to the scope of the work (i.e. added additional walls, bigger bar space, upgraded floors, etc.) that the price would not change $0.01! I can attest to the fact Cal is a man of his word as the contract price did not change throughout the job. In reality, he actually did some additional work in the space that he felt was needed to result in a better end product (all was outside the scope of the contract) and he did not charge at all, despite me offering to pay for it. Cal and his crew were always on time and professional. They all take great pride in their work and are respectful of your home. They would always be willing to explain what was going on and answer any and all questions I may have. Cal would reach out almost nightly to let me know how the project was going and when the next phase (framing, electrical, plumbing, flooring, painting, etc) would be starting. He really runs a smooth and efficient project, I could not have asked for more! Honestly, I will be using Cal for all future projects (big and small) and I cannot recommend him enough. He has a lifetime customer in me!

Do yourself a favor if you're reading this review trying to evaluate whether to hire Cal: just do it already. There's a reason everyone on here has given him and his team (CJ & Matt) 5 stars. They are professional, reliable, honest, easy to communicate with and they do great work. From the initial scoping meeting, Cal listened to what we wanted in our finished basement, made suggestions based on his experience and implemented all of it into his final plan. The end result is a beautifully remodeled basement and wet-bar that we're going to enjoy for many years to come. Cal finished the project within the allotted time-frame he predicted, and within the initial budget he proposed. He gave us weekly updates on the project's sequencing so we were never left to wonder what was next. It is a no-brainer giving him 5 stars. I'd highly recommend Cal and will definitely hire him for any future construction/remodeling projects we may have.

Working with Cal was great from start to finish. He was extremely responsive and answered all our questions throughout the process. He finished well within the schedule and within his quoted budget. We finished our basement, and any project like this is going to be expensive but we feel we got more than a fair value from Cal. Everyone he brought into our home was trustworthy and professional. Plus, our basement looks amazing now! His design style matches ours. We were looking for something that matched the rest of the house, (and not something that looked like a cubicle, which is what a few other companies proposed), and Cal delivered. I have a small basement, cluttered with pipes, boilers, and other equipment. Several contractors turned me down once they saw the basement, or didn't even bother to call back. Cal was very helpful and creative and he found ways to make the job work. And at a low cost. His team did high-quality work, and he was always willing to come up with new ideas or modify the job to meet my needs. He is already working for friends of mine that i referred him to.

Cal and his team, CJ and Matt, did an incredible job with my deck. The workmanship is great and the design is just what I wanted. Matt and CJ are easy to communicate with, answer all your questions and add suggestions which is always helpful during a construction job. I would highly recommend McCarthy construction and will be using them again in the future.

I have worked with Cal for 10 years and if I were not relocating I would continue for forever more! Cal is all things you want in a contractor. He is honest, reliable, responsible. and capable. He provides what he promises and more. It always felt like he took my jobs as if they were the only ones he had. Prompt personal service is a wonderful thing and Cal delivers this.

Very fussy jobs expertly done. Replaced vintage wooden balustrades and rear stairs and entryway in a 1928 vintage brick colonial. Cal and his crew are a real pleasure to work with. Definitely will hire again and very highly recommend McCarthy Construction.

When we moved into our house we had an unfinished space in the 3rd floor that we decided to make into a playroom. I found Cal on Home Advisor and called him to make an appointment to come out. He was very prompt with his response, was able to come out quickly and put together a quote. He was very professional and stuck to his timeline and quote, I could not have been more pleased. There were no unexpected expenses or delays! His crew was very nice, respectful of our home and they did a really nice job, the playroom is exactly what we wanted and Cal is a great person to work with. I highly recommend him for any and all home projects.

We hired Cal after struggling for several months to get estimates and callbacks from other contractors. Cal's estimate was very reasonable, and he was much more responsive/easy to reach than others we dealt with. The work was done well and done quickly, and Cal and his team were very easy to deal with when it came to questions or small surprises that came up during the job. Cal is a great GC. I hired him to finish a basement complete with a wet bar and extra storage. He is honest, upfront and easy to work with. Not only was Cal great on a personal level but his crew is very personable. I would not hesitate to use him again for any renovation project.

We initially hired him to build a finished attic space and replace our tub. We love the work that he and his crew have completed. We have recommended him to all our neighbors and friends. Our front steps were in serious disrepair. But rebuilding the landing and stairs was a relatively small job and it was hard to find someone to take it on. I learned about Cal from HomeAdvisors. When he came out to see the project, his enthusiasm was impressive and even in the busy season he was willing to take on this job. Although September’s weather wasn’t ideal for outdoor construction, Cal went above and beyond to get the job done in a timely manner. The finished product is even better than I imagined! Cal brought creativity and excitement to our project. I highly recommend his talents for yours.
