Very well. There were several projects on-going and some projects were delayed because he had other jobs to juggle and other times because the parts weren't in. Tom was always a gentleman and very easy to work with. Always returned calls immediately and followed up on every detail. Excellent work -- everything he did looks great! Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Replaced painted metal shower stall in small 3rd floor bathroom. This involved pulling out old stall in sections and removing heavy concrete base. Finding replacement stall that was larger so he needed to prep space and a supporting wall. Repainted 2 bathrooms. Other handyman work (patch and paint several problem areas in apt., replace broken turn-of-the century (1900) door hinge, replace broken window pane, replace a few window storm windows).

I was able to get Tom on the phone quickly, and he came out to survey the work very soon after talking. His plan (and quoted plan) was to tear down most of the ceiling and replace it, and this is what the quote was for. It took a long, long time to get a quote, and many follow-up calls/emails. Not the most responsive. The work crew was courteous and efficient. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't tear down the whole ceiling, as anticipated, but understood their decisions to do so (ie the rest of the ceiling was in good shape, and small patches could be more easily replaced). I think the price was right for the original job, but, in hindsight, feel like it could have been quite a bit cheaper if they had more accurately estimated what the work was actually going to be required. Nonetheless, I trust Tom, and like supporting a local business, and am likely to call them again.
Description of Work: Repaired a water-damaged ceiling. Tore down 2-3 small (~2 sq ft) sections of plaster and patched with sheetrock and blended in with plaster.

I called Mr. Cromer because he came highly recommended here on Angie's List. He was very enthusiastic on the phone, very personable. I needed a hinge fixed on a heavy medicine chest door. He took down my info. I called him later with more info on the size of the door. he said he would go to Home Depot and see if he could find a similar hinge. I even emailed him 3-4 pics of the hinge. I included my name, cell number, and address. He said he would call and drop by over the next couple of days to check out the job and see what it would entail. I never heard from him again. I would appreciate it if handy men would just be upfront and tell me that he job is too small or that they are too busy to get to it so I can contact someone else instead of wasting MY time waiting for a response. My time is valuable, too.
The hardwood floor, wood mantle, built in wood shelves, elevated hearth, paint and hanging of the mirror and medicine cabinet each came out excellent. They did an excellent job, we are very pleased with their work and service overall and would use them again for future work. They always cleaned up after their job and are very friendly people to welcome in our home.
Description of Work: Patched a hardwood floor, elevated a fireplace hearth, installed a mantle and built in shelves, painted 1/3 to 1/2 of our 1100sq ft apartment, and hung a large mirror and medicine cabinet.

I hired Tom and his team because they?d done some minor home repairs for me prior to this job. Tom is very nice, respectful and well-meaning. However, this did not make up for the mediocre communication (he admits that he doesn?t listen to his voicemail) and lack of attention to detail on this project, both of which impacted the overall quality. This was a fairly small job and I felt like I was low on the priority scale, working around his needs, not mine. I kept being thanked for being patient. I just wanted the work done. Specifics include: ? He assumed (but did not ask) that I wanted a sculpted ceiling because that?s what was there before, so I got a sculpted ceiling (which I hate). He offered to change it to a smooth finish, but it would have added 2 days to the job, including sanding two extra coats of plaster (and the associated mess/cleanup). ? A 1? x 3? strip of tile at the bathroom entrance was incorrectly installed off-pattern. He did reinstall it and pay for the purchase of the replacement tile, but I had to call him to follow up about it (?I was going to call you,? he said) and this was not completed until a month after original job was done. Even though he used the same bag of grout, the color dried lighter than what had been done prior, so I now have two different colors of grout in a very noticeable location. Some of the grout is coming out on this most recent repair. ? The tile should have been extended further under the baseboard. Behind the sink and toilet, there are places where what should have been tile is filled 3/4 of the way with grout. In one more visible 6? section, he used grout like caulk to cover the places where you can now see the holes where the tile should have been installed (the grout is cracking). ? The lighting fixture was reinstalled upside down. I had to re-hang it. ? At the point that Tom declared the walls were ?ready for painting? late on a Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend, I spent part of that weekend spackling/sanding about eight gouges from the ceiling removal, as well as filling nail holes on the new baseboard, so as not to delay the project yet one more day. ? Having left the bathroom window open one day, I arrived home later after his team had showed up unannounced when I was not home to drill a hole through the brick in preparation for installing a vent fan later in the project. They didn?t think to close the window (though they had access to the interior to do so) and there was a layer of brick dust on everything which took 45 minutes to clean. ? None of the wall corners are square where the ceiling was re-attached/plastered to the walls. Some of the plastering is chunky. ? His ?final? paint job required touch up in about 10 places to cover missed areas. ? On at least two occasions, I was kept waiting at least 45 minutes (missing work) because he was late for (or missed) meetings. ? I arrived unannounced home one day to check progress at 12:15pm when they were due at 9am; the team hadn?t been to the house yet. ? His ?honest? plumber, Jack Downey of Downey Plumbing and Heating (see related Angie?s List post with the same date), stiffed me $100. Six weeks after the installation, the toilet seal broke and excrement was coming out. I had to hire another plumber to fix it, because Jack did not respond for 10 days. I am a full-time working single parent with a young child and was not home when most of the work took place. Perhaps further oversight by me would have lessened some of these problems. To be fair, Tom did negotiate the total price down when I told him about these issues, including covering his plumber's $100 error. And, the project did need a bit of extra time to re-lay the sub-flooring. My frustration came not so much with the wait, but the constant promise of completion and the hassle/time involved in having to break down and then reset up my only bathroom 4 additional times because he would only show up to do, for example, 1/2 hour?s worth of work. The end of the job became a ?piecemeal? finish; I was told on 3 occasions the work would be done only to come home to an unfinished project. I finally got tired of this and told him that I?d finish it (i.e., painting the baseboards) because I couldn?t stand to work around his schedule one more time. Overall, I spent about 6 hours of my time (not including the additional prep and cleaning) ? which I didn?t have ? painting when the plumber was there, helping Tom install the medicine cabinet so I wouldn?t have to go 3 more days without it, etc. This was time away from my child. I would have gladly paid more to have this done completely and more attentively.
Description of Work: Removed the ceiling, floor and one wall of a small-sized full bathroom to allow for plumbing repairs. Reinstalled these items, including a new ceiling fan vent and new tile.

Tom arrived on time with a crew of a few guys. They were very professional and pleasant to work with. We had already purchased the new door from Home Depot but Tom picked it up for us. They encountered a few problems, mostly relating to the fact that our house was built in the 1950s and the dimensions of the new door frame did not exactly match up with the old, but they were able to fit the door in just fine. They took the extra time to carefully insulate and caulk around the door, and picked some new trim which matches our existing trim very well. It looks great and is insulated very well compared to our old door which was drafty and cold all the time. We wouldn't hesitate to use this company again in the future. Thanks Tom!
Description of Work: Tom and his crew replaced an old drafty 1960s aluminum sliding glass door with a new Andersen door that we had already purchased. His cost included all labor and disposal of the old door.

Tom was very nice an knowledgeble from the beginning. He helped us decide what to do with our problem walls (there was beat up wainscotting on the bottom and lath and plaster on top) - he helped us decide to add plaster board on top - which turned out wonderfully. He helped us lay out the cabinets and fit everything in. When he and his crew did the work the were professional, clean, detailed. I am very impressed and would recommend him whole heartedly. He threw in a few extra things - hanging some new shelving, boxing in a pipe.
Description of Work: Tom redid our kitchen in an old 2 family house. He put up walls, ceiling, cabinets, dishwasher, lights, microwave, stove.

They came within a few hours of our call (early the next morning), figured out what they had to do, had the requisite tools, and proceeded to the task. It was sufficiently complex, that they had to return a second day to finish. All three were polite, good-natured, considerate, and clean. They also were anxious to get the bird or birds out alive; clearly a high priority to them, which we heartily agreed with. Their return was when promised, and they meticulously painted and cleaned up the site before departing. It was a superb job. Since it was not clear at the outset what the job would entail, there was no initial estimate. We had to trust their judgment, though they asked our view of each step.Tthe resulting cost was entirely fair.
Description of Work: A bird's nest built under the eaves resulted in a young bird getting trapped so that its chirping was essentially inside the house, and dirt and debris from the bird fell through a ceiling edge onto the second floor. Tom and his crew (Gary and Scott) came the morning after we called, gingerly opened a wall panel, removed the frightened but uninjured bird, closed it all up and installed chicken wire to prevent happening again.

I called and spoke with Tom. He said he would come out in a few days to look at the job. He called me around 4:30 on a Sunday and asked if I minded him coming as he was in the area with his family. I said yes. He arrived and had a young son with him (4-6 y/o). While the child was cute - he was a kid being a kid- he was constantly demanding attention and Tom could barely finish a sentence without the son interrupting. It was very difficult to focus, ask questions and just as difficult for Tom to answer questions. After about 30 minutes if this Tom said he would write up the stuff we had talked about and mail a written estimate in about a week or 2. That was 2 montha ago and never hears from him. Obviously I could have followed up with a call but after the initial meeting I was unimpressed and probably would not have used him anyway.
Description of Work: We wanted an estimate to have some window casings and some general exterior work performed on our house.

Excellent. Difficult job because of the clutter of large basement playroom. Tom and his assistant did an excellent and professional job moving furniture around, removing carpet and tiles, painting 2 coats and signiificant plaster repair. Very pleased. Tom does a variety of jobs and could be considered a general contractor. Would hire again in moment. Tom is a very personable guy wanting to please and easy to work with. Very knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Basement playroom needed some plaster repair, rug removed, tiles removed and disposed of, cement floor prepared for, and painted with two coats. Playroom almost size of entire first floor and cluttered with couches, TVs, desks, tables etc.

Getting the project started was a slow business, but we were as much to blame for that as Tom. Once the project started, though, Tom was amazing about calling and setting up times and making sure we were informed throughout the project. The whole process took about a week, and all the subcontractors that Tom used were polite, professional, and produced good work. The door frame, left over from the last owners' remodeling, was a quick fix and the wall now looks as if it was never there. The plumbing and electrical moved with no problems, and the appliances went up stairs quickly. The finish work was excellent. They cleaned up well after themselves each day. The two half walls look as if they were part of the original project. Tom made absolutely sure we were satisfied with the project. I highly recommend Tom for any house project and will be using him again.
Description of Work: Washer and dryer were moved one floor above where they were with electrical and plumbing moved up to service them. Toilet moved over to accommodate appliances. Small half walls built to make top of stairs safer as an added project. Old door frame removed from middle of wall.
I have mixed feelings about him. He was a very nice person. He wants to be the cheapest so instead of quoting the job with top notch work, he takes notes but when he does the quote he cuts corners and cuts things out to display the ending price being very low. They were installing cabinets, you usually use stud finders, etc.; my room was freshly painted, they drilled holes all over my walls, my husband had to patch them up after they left. The floor they did was wonderful, fairly priced and wonderful. For the money I don't feel like I got the quality I wanted. When he was quoting us other jobs, it was almost that he was in a hurry to make sure he got the job. We don't always want the lowest, we want a good price with good quality. I would recommend him for smaller jobs. There was the a little attention to detail that he missed. His crew was excellent, very good, wonderful and professional.
Description of Work: He installed cabinets in our basement, tiled a small floor and wall boarded a closet.

In all, it was a pretty positive experience, but really only because I wasn't in a huge rush to get it done. I first contacted Tom via email, and he got back to me by phone within a few days. It took a couple weeks for him to get to the house and look at the job, and eventually he provided a quote which seemed a little high, but, frankly, I just wanted the job done. After I got the quote, he showed up with a couple guys who needed to display some creativity in order to get the job done since the area that needed to be painted was a little awkward for them to reach. Very polite, very pleasant folks. My best advice to them would be a quicker turnaround on the quote.

I thought their price was reasonable and they stuck with their estimate. They were pleasant to have around. There was a lot of coming and going and they seemed a little disorganized but if they were organized they would probably be contractors. I would use them again.
Description of Work: They replaced a screen and storm door. They also did some light carpentry work.
Tom and his team is excellent. They are friendly, helpful, honest in their quotes and very helpful in general handyman tasks. We we moving into a house we had bought that the previous owner had left many things undone, Tom and his crew addressed all of these, while tackling the major efforts of the floor, the door, the siding and the parking space. We were very happy to work with him and will definitely use him in the future.
Description of Work: They fixed the siding on the back of our house, moved a door from the back to the side, put in a parking space, installed a natural gas washer and dryer, removed an old rug and installed pergo flooring, added a gate to our fence and installed a dryer and microwave vent as well as many numerous small tasks.
