I had animals in the walls. Didn't know what. Called Critter Control. I found the price daunting, although I'm sure it was reasonable as he gets an A on price in the list. After I described the problem, Dan told me it was either squirrels or mice, and that if it was mice, he recommended putting traps out with peanut butter. From his description, I determined it was mice. I put the traps out. That night, I stopped hearing the noise in the walls. The next morning I found 3 dead mice. If I ever have a problem I can't handle myself, I would certainly use Critter Control.

Critter control was prompt, professional, and courteous. They responded promptly to my phone call and quickly got to the bottom of the problem (mice in the attic). per our request set eco-friendly mouse traps to catch mice without harming them (their standard approach is to use conventional mouse trap, but we preferred catch/release and they were flexible in adapting to our request). The approach was successful, with several mice caught and released. I recommend this company for animal control, ie mice in attic or basement, squirrel in attic or chimney, etc. as they seem competent and are easy to work with.
Description of Work: Evaluated exterior of house and indoor attic space to determine cause of scratching noises. Determined the problem was mice. Purchased and set box-style mouse traps to catch mice without harming them so they can be released.

Critter Control gave us several options for resolving the problem -- we had them install temporary screens with one-way exits (to let the creatures escape), then permanent vent screens a couple of weeks later. Service was prompt and professional. They did not invoice us until the work was completed, and they provide the option of paying online with Paypal.
Description of Work: Inspection of roof and attic to determine what kind of animal was making loud nocturnal noises in the attic. Flying squirrels were coming in via the roof vents!

The whole thing was done by phone. They came and installed traps, removed one squirrel, left the traps there for about a week, and came by to collect traps and seal the holes. All very easy on me.
Description of Work: Had a squirrel in the attic (the actual furry kind). They trapped one and left the traps there for awhile to make sure no more were in there.

For us, it was painless, and a great experience. Ben and Eddie did have to do a lot of work though, and we really appreciate the effort, and professionalism they maintained the whole time they were out there.
Description of Work: We've had animals in our chimney for 1-2 months. We had called animal control, and they said the animals (if they were raccoons) should leave once the babies were old enough to climb out on their own. Well, that was 2 months ago. We got sick of the noises and finally called Critter Control of Watertown. I called and left a voice-mail, after normal working hours. They called me first thing in the morning, and they were very accommodating and came out the same day. Ben and Eddie showed up promptly at the scheduled time and got right to work. Within minutes of their arrival, we knew we had 1 adult raccoon and a baby. We got the paperwork out of the way, and they set to work. They retrieved the mother without issue. Then, they checked the chimney to see if they could just pull the baby out. Things got interesting here. Turns out the baby was a few months old, fur, teeth, claws and all! They couldn't just reach in and grab him, so they got it to climb up the chimney and capture it just like the mother. They used a wireless camera and LCD screen in the fire place through the flue to verify there were no raccoons left. However, it turns out there was a second young one. Thank heaven they had the wireless camera setup to really probe the chimney! They were able to pin point the exact position of the third raccoon. They tried to get it to climb up, but this one wasn't able to yet. So, they were going to try to coax it onto the chimney brush and help it up. As Eddie was trying to get it to move towards the brush (Ben was on the roof), the raccoon tumbled through the flue into the fireplace! Eddie pounced on it as quick as lightning and held it while Ben came in with the cage. After all this, they took another thorough look in both fireplaces with their wireless camera. Satisfied there weren't any raccoons left, Ben finished cleaning up the area. As part of the service, we also wanted to have a chimney cap installed. As they didn't have the right size, they came back the next day and had it installed in no time, and it looks great!

Of course I went to Angie's List, chose a Watertown company, Critter Control, that had glowing reports. It was after 3:30 but the boss answered (not sure of his name but he did give it--I was getting more nervous about having the bat caught in a timely fashion). He said he would contact Eddie out in the field, who would phone me and tell me roughly when he would come. In no time Eddie phoned from Arlington, said he'd come between 4:00 and 5:00, but he actually arrived a few minutes before 4:00. He and his helper were both cheerful. Eddie went right to work with his flashlight, heavy gauntlet gloves, bucket and tight lid. He moved the tall cupboard out a bit more so he could reach in fast, grab the bat, shove it down into the bucket, and slide the lid into place. It was Eddie's second Brookline bat that day. He filled out the paper work and said his boss would send me a bill, eventually do a walk through to see if he could tell how the bat came into the apartment, and try to find a solution to block entry. He also said if the bat were rabid and there was any chance that I could have been bitten, I should have a medical exam, etc. Someone (the lab?) will be in touch with me to report. I'll check with the boss to see if I misunderstood. I haven't paid yet because Eddie said I'd get an email bill, but both the boss and Eddie gave me the price of $279.* (I put this as the cost but I haven't paid yet.) I am so grateful for the quick response of Critter Control and Eddie that the price seemed ok with me. If the solution involves blocking air ducts with a material that will allow airflow, I'll check with Paul at Peabody Air Duct Cleaners (whose work I also liked very much) to be sure that it won't interfere with duct cleaning 5 years hence when he thought it should be done again.
Description of Work: I listened to a CD as usual to help me fall asleep quickly. It was midnight. But instead I stayed wide awake because I heard strange little noises--a very soft rustling of my ventian blinds and the shade that pulls down behind the blinds. I also felt a faint sense of stirring air, but knew the window wasn't open. I was so uneasy when the CD ended that I turned on my bedside lamp and was horrified to see a bat flying wildly in loops and circles. I raced out of the room, leaving the light on, and closed the door tight. The light turned out to be good because, apparently, not liking the light, the bat found a place to roost. Next morning I had to go out, but needing clothes, I crept into my room wearing a long hooded raincoat and heavy leather gloves, gathered my clothes, but saw no sign of the bat. The Brookline TAB article I'd read about the town's bats and possible rabies made me very uneasy. When I came home in the afternoon I tackled the problem by calling the Brookline Health Dept. just before they closed--it was a Friday. The nurse I talked to told me the Police Dept. has a man who is rabies protected. He would collect the animal, but she said it would help if meanwhile I could find it. She told me the bat would likely be in a high place, but also told me how to look in a closet if the bat might be there. I gently tugged one end of a very tall antique cupboard from the wall and peeked behind it along the top. At the far corner I could see the bat hanging upside down. Seeing one little ear made me certain. I left it in peace and phoned the Police Dept. only to find that the man I needed was on vacation. The PD told me to find an animal control company.

Response from Critter Control of Boston
I was a bit surprised to see this report, as it is by far the lowest grades I have received. Looking back at the paper work I found nothing out of the ordinary and the pricing seems consistent with what any wildlife company would charge. We made multiple trips, made sure there were no animals in the hole and performed repairs to prevent future entry. I try to be very careful to explain how we charge for our services over the phone so customers know what to expect. I also do everything I can to provide the very best service possible. I am sorry this member did not contact me before posting this report, as we always do everything we can to make sure our customers are happy with the service we provided. We had a skunk living under our garden shed. I was 35 weeks pregnant and the skunk was very active in the evening. After a few sleepless nights and a smelly house I emailed Critter Control. I got a call within like 12 hours someone came to my house that day to set up a trap. Our skunk problem was solved in a few days. We got an estimate on additional work to the shed - a metal barrier that as buried to discourage any future tenants - and had that work done about 7 weeks later when the ground thawed. Again, everyone was quick and very professional. And we are still free of any skunks!
Description of Work: Skunk removal. Metal wire barrier installed (and buried) all around the shed to keep any animals from returning and building a burrow.

A great experience from start to finish. Peter was very considerate of our particular approach to removing the really quite formidable squirrels and was as efficient as could be. A pleasure to work with and a complete pro who can give you that advice you may not think is out there. He knows his stuff. Finding someone this good the first time is why I'm on Angie's.

Excellent! They were fabulous. They came out the same day I called (within an hour of my call). They trapped and removed two squirrels, located where they were coming in, and screened off the vents so that they have not come back. I highly recommend them. They were very professional and they provided excellent service! Ben was really, really good.

Overall, Peter was so responsive and diligent and kind, making an unpleasant situation tolerable. I highly recommend Critter Control and should the pesky creatures return, I will call them right away.
Description of Work: I have had continued problems with squirrels. They have caused a lot of damage and cost a lot for repairs over the years. I had a squirrel who was scratching in the living room wall and another in a bedroom ceiling when I called Critter Control. Their service was above and beyond any other people I had used. Not only did they get rid of the squirrels & patched the holes, but they also discovered and took care of other problems. My chimney was collapsing and there were tree branches against the house.

Wonderful. He (Ben?) came every day, even the weekend after Thanksgiving, and got rid of the squirrels quick! He was polite, prompt, and professional. Gave me a range of options for preventing further infestations, and did not pressure me to do extra measures (am replacing roof, so some of his recommendations will be done then). . Made daily report of squirrels caught. Felt he was very honest and trustworthy. I will nominate for Page of Happiness!

They we very professional -- provided a detailed assessment of issues, along with quotes for each type of fix so that I could tell exactly what the costs were. Work was done quickly, and with not disruptions. And best of all, my attic is now squirrel-free!
Description of Work: We had a squirrel in the attic, and they trapped and removed the squirrel, and then did patch/repair work so squirrels could not get back in the house. They also did a full review out the house (a 2-family condo) and identified areas that need to be addresses (small holes around pipes that mice could get in, a missing vent cap on the dryer vent where birds could nest), and fixed those as well.

To my very pleasant surprise Dan was able to come out within 24 hours of calling for help (I think it might have been same day in fact). He chased racoons out of the attic, caught some and set traps which later caught the others (total of 5 racoons). Dan was prompt, personable, efficient and effective. Between the service fee ($275) and the per critter caught cost ($89 times 5 racoons) as well as some roof renovation the cost got up there- but Dan's prompt attention, effective service and diligent followup until we were completely certain that every critter was gone made the price seem quite reasonable. He didn't charge for the squirrel he found. I'd hire him again without question and can't find a thing to criticize about his performance.

While having the gutters replaced on our house, a (very noisy) squirrel got trapped inside our living room wall. We called Critter Control about 8PM and left a message. They called back by 9AM the following day and came to the house by noon. Both men were friendly and professional. They explained the process, a little bit about animal behavior, and got right to work setting up the trap. Luckily the squirrel came out that night and they came by to remove it the following day. We would undoubtedly use Critter Control again if/when we have any more problems with critters.
Description of Work: A hole was drilled on the outside wall of our house and a trap with a one-way door placed over the hole. The squirrel found its way into the trap and they removed it the following day. They left the trap up over the weekend just to make sure everything was out, then they removed the trap and patched up the hole on Monday.

Dan came every day for two weeks, and changed the bait in the trap until the raccoon was caught. Fixed the hole the animal had made in the soffit, and charged me exactly what he estimated. Great work! And he kept in touch the whole time, giving me progress reports, which I very much appreciated, as I was out of town some of the time.

I called Dan Masters with an emergency wildlife issue. He was calm and reassuring on the phone and arrived at our house in less than an hour to resolve the problem. This was my first contact with him but he treated me like a valued customer. He returned a second time to discuss some recommendations for the house. He was very reasonable and conservative in his recommendations, took his time inspecting and explaining to me and even left us free mousetraps! I definitely give him my highest recommendation and will be a loyal customer.

It went well. I was able to scheule for the next day. I learned more about rodent behavior, including that my infestation seemed pretty minor. Trapped were set in the kitchens of the two-family where droppings were found. I also had some traps set up in the basement, even though we didn't find droppings there. So far, there have been no mice in my kitchen - at least, there are no more droppings or visual sightings. I'm not sure what's happening in the renatal apartment, which is where the problem was a little bit worse. Dan had told me that mice like the attic, because of the insulation. We had been surprised to find no activity there. Turns out that they were living in the basement ceiling. Some previous owner had installed sheetrock and insulation there, which is a pretty bad idea in general. I needed to take all this down for renovations and found lots and lots of mouse droppings. Ugh. We didn't find this during the walk through, but it is a pretty usual condition.
Description of Work: I saw a mouse in the kitchen of my new house. Dan answered when I called and explained the services that he offfered. They do not use poisons, which I liked. They do identify areas where rodents might be entering the house and propose solutions. They also go through the whole house, from the attic down to the basement, identify areas with rodent activity and set traps and clean up droppings. For an additional fee, they come back and remove dead mice.

We had no complaints. They did what they said they were going to do. They were punctual and we would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We had them do two separate jobs each was about $400. We had them remove squirrels from our walls and they did what they needed to do so the squirrels could not regain access. They came back to check the traps and blocked the ways they were getting in. We also had a rodent problem taken care of by then. There was an athletic field dug up near our house and all of the rodents came to our neighborhood. The only thing that might not be totally accurate. They came twice for the squirrel problem and once for the rodents. The squirrel problem was the more expensive and the rodent problem was probably only $80 or $90. We have had to use them three times.

Overall, everything went well. In addition to closing the vents and trapping the squirrels, CC identified a hole in my gutter through which the squirrels were entering my attic area. We agreed that they would also close that hole once the squirrels were caught. However, upon closer inspection, CC informed me that my gutters needed more work, and that their blocking that particular hole would not make much of a difference, given the condition of my gutters. Dan Masters, the owner, went the extra step of recommending a gutter repair company, with whose work he is familiar. He said he would call me back, which he did, with the information. Overall, I was very satisfied with the overall professionalism of this company.
Description of Work: Critter Control (CC) conducted an inspection of my roof, gutters, and air vents for possible points of entry for birds and squirrels. We called CC because of birds in an air vent and squirrels in a storage area. A trap was set for the squirrels, which required follow-up visits. The vent was cleared of birds, and fan vent guards were installed on all 4 vents, on the first visit. CC came back several times over the following two weeks (as required by law) to check on the squirrel traps. Two squirrels were caught.
