Rob is meticulous and detailed in his approach, and explains everything he plans to do in an easily accessible way. He has a sense of humor (rare these days), and is easy to work with. Cellulose is messy stuff, but he and his team did a great job cleaning up fluff that accumulated outside.

Rob is very professional and knowledgeable. He can do his best to accommodate your schedule. He will explain all the details to you and give you his suggestions. His crew works very hard and clean up really well. Job is very well done!

After I removed the old and warping dry wall and collected the overhead fiber fill that fell out of the ceiling, I needed to get the insulation redone. After a web search I sought out heavy foam insulators. Calnan was the first company that responded to my Angie's List messages to about 10 total. They did so on the same day. Mr. Calnan regretfully informed me that he did not do foam but graciously spent time on the phone with me explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various insulation material. For another couple of weeks I communicated with more than half of those I originally messaged. Some were straightforward as to length of schedule, traffic difficulties that kept them from installing in my area, and other difficulties giving me a direct negative answer. Others were more ordinary and just didn't call back after the initial contact. I learned that the job was too small for foam, given the capital investment of the truck and warm up time of the foam. I called Calnan again. He came out the next day and surveyed the work, and presented me with a reasonable estimate based on an unexpected, by me, proposal that took my desire for foam into consideration. Instead of standard "blow and fill" types, like cellulose with much lower R values, he proposed 2" foam board layered to match what heavy foam would provide. Again, he graciously spent time with me discussing the project and encouraged me to investigate a building permit which he could not provide as he was only performing part of the total job (demo, insulation, and drywall). I went to Malden City Hall, discovered I did need a permit, filled out the application, and was told I could get started while the permit was in process. I imagine that is an advantage of a small job. With that assurance, I still waited about a week hoping the permit would be quick, then took the Inspector's permission and called Calnan to start. We arranged the next day. They came, put up the board and thoroughly cleaned that same day. The finished installation is neat and well set (foam from a small machine was used as a cement for the boards). It took another week before I could pick up my permit, after which I arranged an inspection. The Inspector looked for ten minutes, asked a couple of questions, and signed off without a negative comment. I would hire Calnan again without a second thought and am now contemplating other jobs of the same type in my house.

Rob and his crew (family) did a fantastic job, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. I am confident that they did a thorough job, with a lot of attention to detail. The communication was excellent and they did a great job cleaning up after themselves. He worked with me to develop a plan that fit the needs of the house and our budget. This job was particularly complicated because the work needed to be coordinated with our roofer, to gain access to the attic space. I have zero complaints about their work, and Rob and his crew have earned my trust.

Rob and his sons did an excellent job and were very responsive to us and all of our requests. We had multiple contractors at the home for various jobs and Rob was able to schedule/work around others schedules. Rob went out of his way to suggest ways to do things that we hadn't thought of. His pricing was very competitive and I would absolutely use him again. He made the process much easier than I had expected. Did a great job cleaning up after as well.

Within days of contacting Calnon, Rob came out. After looking at the area behind the attic walls where pipes were freezing, Rob identified problem areas and explained his plan to eliminate the problem of the freezing pipes. Within days after the initial visit he and his crew showed up well equipped to insulate problem areas. Job was throughly finished in one day. His crew throughly cleaned up after themselves and did a terrific job, so clean in fact know one would notice that a contractor was even in our house that day. Price was very reasonable.

Rob came out to look at the problem and walked us through what needed to be done to correct the issues. Rob, Jon and Jon showed up on time and were very professional throughout the process. They were very thorough. In addition to insulating several areas in our basement, bulkhead, exterior kitchen wall and under our kitchen sink, they also noticed we had a basement door that wasn't closing properly and wasn't weather sealed. They fixed the door and weather sealed it at no additional cost. They cleaned up behind themselves so perfectly when they were done that you'd never know work had just been done. We've already noticed a big difference in our kitchen. There's no longer a cold draft or cold spots on the floor or under the cabinets.

I emailed Calnan and left a message. Even though he was on vacation I got an email back about having home insulation work done. Prices were great. They came by at the time they said they would and were very friendly and helpful. Even explaining the process as they did the job. Once finished they cleaned everything up spotless. Very happy that I contacted them and the whole experience was exactly how it was drawn up. Even got some information about getting my windows refurbished from manufacturer. Would recommend Calnan for work anytime.

They did an awesome job cleaning the old cellulose and fiberglass insulation, and put in extra time to ensure that the new rigid board insulation was sealed perfectly around all edges and corners. The level of service surpassed my expectation and I would recommend this company to anyone that wants a quality insulation work done.

price included energy audit and recommendations by progressive energy services in sterling ma. rob insulated a very old and hard to access attic in our 1853 house. he was actually recommended for his attention to detail and ability to work in old houses well and he definitely did that. he also installed new storm windows and added a beautiful new door taking into consideration many limiting factors. i would highly recommend him for his knowledge and familiarity of materials as well as his professionalism.

Calnan was very professional throughout the entire process. They arrived on time and cleaned up after the work was complete. I was very happy with their work.

Provided good advice on a complicated subject -- insulating an older home. Professional, kept on schedule, no damage to existing interior finishes, and cleaned-up well after job. Used blown-in cellulose insulation.

Mr. Calnan was responsive over the phone and email from the time we first contacted him to get an estimate to the completion of the last job. He's on the talkative end of the spectrum in person so budget a few extra minutes with him. Not annoyingly chatty, just gives a complete picture with all the required details. We were going through our first winter in our condo which was the very cold winter of 2013-2014. Our condo felt cold and drafty and wanted professional opinions on how to increase our comfort level as well as insulate around a problem area in the basement where pipes froze multiple times. Rob Calnan thoroughly inspected our condo, although I wish he had used an infrared camera to image the insulation in the walls, and gave us a number of suggestions. We ended up having Rob Calnan do most of the work he proposed with the exception of blowing in cellulose insulation under the floor. We'll probably do that at a later date. He was always on time whenever he came to our property, always very professional, completed the work he said he would do on time and cleaned up thoroughly. We were very pleased with the quality of all the work he performed and would recommend him for insulation, window and door replacement. His prices were a bit higher on some items but not outrageous. It took a few weeks longer than we expected to get the replacement door we ordered but once it was ready he did the work in a timely manner.

Rob was terrific -- very professional, punctual, and impressive. He explained everything clearly and was very patient with me understanding the process. The man knows what he's doing.

,Excellent experience. During the estimate appointment, Rob was precise and clear about my options, which I appreciated very muh because my attic is a complicated space. He and his crew arrived promptly, did the work in the time estimated and cleaned up thoroughly.. Bonus for me is that he's a diehard dog lover. I have dogs that like to be near the action and he and his crew were great with them.

Working with Rob and Calnan's Energy Systems was a great experience from start to finish. When Rob initially came to my house he spent at least an hour checking everything out, explaining what could be done, and making recommendations based on what he thought would be most efficient (not most expensive). He provided great written materials that explain the process, checklists to help you evaluate other potential contractors, and copies of his certifications and insurance coverage. He pulled all the necessary town permits too! Rob was replacing the insulation in a loft space over the garage that gets very cold in winter and very hot in summer. I was having him do this work based on work MassSaves wouldn't cover. I have a MassSaves contractor (which Rob is not) coming separately to make various other insulation upgrades around the house. Rob offered to come back to my house after MassSaves was done to evaluate the work they did (he used to work with MassSaves and has alot of insight about the program). I have no point of view about the effectiveness of the work yet, but I have no reason not to believe it won't be some level of improvement. Rob and his crew made sure everything was clean when they left and were very careful not to dirty the inside of the house. Overall I would work with Rob again in the future for any insulation work and definitely recommend him.

We live in an old house and our kitchen is a cold spot, routinely 5-10 degrees colder than the rest of the house. After the latest cold snap, we decided to reach out to several insulation contractors to see if they could help with the problem. Rob Calnan (the owner) got back to me promptly (same day) and made time to come out the following day to take a look around. He spent a couple hours discussing what he saw were the immediate issues and helped put together a multi-step proposal to try to solve the issue quickly. Other contractors I reached out to gave me more of a take it (re-insulate the entire structure) or leave it option, and only after I discussed Rob's proposals, did they quote me on the smaller job. Rob's price was competitive and we had him proceed with the work. Rob helped schedule the job quickly at a convenient time, and showed up promptly. The insulation took 2 days, and he kept me posted on progress and any issues that arose throughout the process. Since completion, we've noticed an improvement in the kitchen temperature and with our older home this has made a big difference. If I ever had insulation needs again, I would certainly contact Calnan's as I found them easy to work with. Most importantly, I did not feel like I was being told what to do. Rob brought me in on the decision making and though I deferred to his expertise, It was great knowing how/what was being done. I also greatly appreciated the email receipt and the guidance through the permitting process.

Rob, John & John put insulation in attic of my Mom's addition. Rob arranged for the permit and town inspector. These guys are very friendly with utmost professionalism. He broke out the quote in two parts to provide options. The vent was rotted and Rob replaced/installed a newly painted one for a very reasonable price. They did s thorough job and I recommend them highly.

Have a unique size door at rear of the house. Old screen door needed replacement for more energy efficient model. Rob Calnan carefully measured the size of the new screen door, ordered and then installed it. Took some time to get the door from manufacturer hence the punctuality score of 'B', but Rob was very careful to get it right the first time and do the extra work necessary on the installation. I would use Rob Calnan for door installation any time.

I first contacted Rob about the job nearly 2 years ago. His card was handed to me by one of the top roofing companies in the area. Their salesman said, 'This is the only guy we'll work with, because he's that reliable.' [This issue for roofers is they need to keep the job moving to make their money and not lose their profit margin in salaries of their workers sitting around while the insulation guy doesn't' show up, shows up late, or take too long or gets under their feet.] I did not hire that roofing company because their bid was too expensive. But I was impressed by their recommendation and more impressed by Rob himself when I met him then. His integrity and knowledge seemed top-notch. Fast forward to early October 2013, and we move ahead with another roofing company. I introduced Rob to them. They worked very well together, helped each other out and Rob kept out of their way and moved fast. The key to a good insulation job, I've learned, is thoroughness. If you pack in insulation ALMOST everywhere, but leave a couple of square feet un-insulated, that space will act almost like a chimney for heat [or cooled AC air] and you'll have wasted money on insulation. I can't swear that Mr. Calnan sealed every little corner of my job, but he certainly put in enough effort and materials, and showed enough integrity and fastidiousness in his personal character that i am highly confident he did the job right. There was one cost overrun that cost us an additional $900, unfortunately. As he was unable to insulate the party wall from an open hole in the roof as he hoped, he had to work inside the house --a more laborious process for him [and for us --we had to patch up the drill-holes.] But before the job got started, he warned me this was a possibility. I don't get snowed easily by contractors Given how costly the roofing and insulation jobs were, given that I was responsible not only for our unit but our neighbor's and given that I spent two years on this job, I did a lot of consulting, spoke to a lot of people, crossed-checked everything I was told. I'm almost an expert. All in all, I give Rob 100 points out of 100. I wouldn't take the trouble to write this review if I wasn't more than delighted with his work.

Rob Calnan insulated the walls of my house. At first I was going to go through Mass Save, but Rob has extensive experience as a FORMER Mass Save provider and convinced me of the value of NOT going through the program. Despite having to spend several thousand dollars extra, I am convinced that Calnan energy did a far better job than Mass Save ever would. He and his crew spent three full days working to blow insulation into my house walls. In addition, Rob has been an invaluable resource in my attempts, so far unsuccessful, in getting Mass Save to do other work. He has proven to be an enormous wealth of information and I trust his opinion completely. He is not the least expensive, but his work is extremely thorough and you know you are getting great value for your money. I have already hired him to perform additional work, including a new screen door.

We purchased a house built in the late 1950's. During a kitchen remodel we discovered there was NO insulation in our walls. We quickly got bids to fully insulate the house and we chose Calnan. The owner Bob was very responsive by returning our call and explaining his process. That was followed by a visit to our house to further explain, and quote the job. His price was very reasonable and competitive. We chose Calnan because of his thorough description of the job, and price. Our house is vinyl sided therefore he explained they would remove a section, drill into the house from the outside, blow-in the cellulose insulation, plug the hole and replace the vinyl siding. We were relieved it seemed to be a well thought out procedure which he has done many, many times before. I asked for references and got good feedback from prior customers so we booked the job. As soon as he obtained the permit the work began. It took about 2 1/2 days to complete. His crew was prompt, respectful of our property, and cleaned up the yard at end of day. We couldn't be happier with their workmanship and Bob's professionalism. He kept us informed along every step of the job and completed it on time. We highly recommend this company.

The job was PERFECTION! Having the owner of the company at the job and doing the majority of the work makes the price and selection just right for me. Rob is a wonderful man. He's honest, trustworthy, professional and does not only what he says, but more. He wants each customer to be happy regardless of any obstacles he encounters during the job. I highly recommend him and would be delighted for him to do more work for me if I require his service. He is the consumate professional who understands customer service and that he treats your home as if it were his own. He managed to complete the jon in about 10 hours or more, cleaned up the house of all of the debris and left it in the same condition it was in when he arrived, only the house looked 100% better when he left and the new storm windows were installed. While his price was higher than others, I believe it was money well spent to have him do the job with the experience and professionalism he has. He is a wonderful salesman, but stands behind everything he says 100%. In the end, while it was harder for me to pay the additional money, it was worth it given the amazing job he did for me.
