it went very well! they showed up on time, insulated the entire 2nd floor. unless you look, you can't even tell where the shingles were removed to make the holes for the blown in insulation. we have a 2 1/2 story shingled home and own the second and top floors. the bottom condo was not insulated either - they worked with them to have their unit insulated before our unit. the difference was noticeable right away, the house was more evenly warm. we still needed new windows, so the house wasn't actually 'warm' yet, but once the windows were installed (a different company), the experience is amazing, like living in a different house altogether. everyone was extremely friendly. there was no mess left behind.
Description of Work: insulated entire second floor of house, which was completely empty, with blown-in insulation.

The guy who came out was patient. We have an aluminum siding house. He was very knowledgeable about the effects of the weather and the temperature when trying to remove the siding to insulate. He also gave plenty of information for me to consider whether or not it is the time of the year whether I wanted to get it done. He also told me as to how it is affected by the weather. He was very prompt with his bid and was within the budget. He was very pleasant to work with. He was very personable and I met with Robert Calnan himself. If need be, then I would use his services in the future too.

They were a few minutes late but otherwise they were terrific. Today I sent them a confirmation that I will be working with them. There were things that Calnan quoted on initially, but I am not getting them done this time. After my initial phone call, they took a week to get back to me which I thought was a little bit long.

We were pleasantly surprised how easy Rob made it to coordinate with the roofing contractor (Ranch Renovations). They worked cooperatively with no finger-pointing. They even shared a dumpster to save money. Good experience.
Description of Work: We had been suffering some huge ice dams, so wanted to get much better insulation to keep the roof cold. Rob's crew worked closely with the roofing contractor on scheduling to install high-R-factor foam in the enclosed spaces and fiberglass in the open attic spaces. He even came back for a day to spray in insulation when the siding contractor had opened the exterior walls.

Robert Calnan came to prepare an estimate within two days of my call. He spent a long time going over exactly what he would do and why, explained why several other tasks were not necessary or not worth the money, and also pointed out various features of my home construction that I was not aware of. I was extremely impressed with his professional expertise and his skill at explaining things, and on that basis alone I was very eager to hire him. However, his estimate ended up being over twice as expensive as a quote I received from another highly rated (according to A.L.) contractor. While I would have been happy to choose Calnan if his quote had been only a little more expensive than the competition, I could not afford such a large surcharge. Still, I would definitely call them for another estimate for any future insulation work.

From the initial estimate, everthing was extremely smooth and professional. Rob showed up exactly on schedule, gave me a realistic picture of what needed doing, what he could do and what the process would be, and followed up promptly with a detailed estimate. The work was done on schedule, in a single day, and as promised they patched all the holes and cleaned up well -- there was some dust, particularly in a cupboard and closet, but not much. The improvement in the comfort of the room was dramatic -- wish we'd done it years ago. I couldn't ask for a better experience. It's not cheap, but our gas company picked up more than half the cost ($2000) -- Rob handled all the paperwork and we got the rebate check before the credit card payment for the work came due -- and there will be tax savings that will reduce the price further, in addition to (we hope) some savings on our heat bills.
Description of Work: They insulated a room over our garage, as well as around a stairwell adjacent to the garage. This involved blowing in insulation under the floor, with access through the garage ceiling and walls, and also putting in insulation above the room's ceiling, via the house's attic. They also put weatherstripping around our front door.

Rob the owner is extremely knowledgeable and was able get our work to qualify for 75% rebate for a total of $2,000 for the air sealing and insulation work. What a deal. Wow, we hadn't realized how drafty these areas were until the insulation went in. Cellulose is messy, but Rob had warned us and did a great job with clean up. He has a team of people that will seal up air leaks in your house which I haven't found anywhere else. Rob also taught me a lot about my house when he can to quote.

I investigated several other installation companies and insulation materials before leaning toward the Green Fiber's cellulose and Calnan's Energy Systems. The search included open cell and closed cell spray foam as well as blown in fiberglass. There were pros and cons for everything and the combination of this particular residential construction, slate roof, accessibility, environmental issues, VOCS, fire resistance, etc. From the initial phone conversation with Loretta, to the on site walk through with Rob Calnan, I had every question answered, leaving me feeling comfortable that I was making the most appropriate choices for this particular property and working with an experienced, conscientious contractor. The crew followed through with professional installation methods and materials, were thorough, courteous and cleaned up all areas of work. Loretta and Rob completed the necessary forms for us to apply for a rebate offered by our gas heat provider. We look forward to additional paybacks with lower fuel bills over the next several winters.
Description of Work: Calnan's crew insulated the cross gable attic area of our uninsulated 3500 sq ft, circa 1885 Victorian using blown in, loose fill, Green Fiber's Cocoon, Class-1 cellulose in the flat areas, and in combination with fiberglass batts at sections of knee wall. Prior to installing the insulation materials, they air sealed all accessible bypasses using expanding foam. Per Rob Calnan's specifications the crew air sealed the basement perimeter. Other work included insulating a first floor bathroom crawlspace that bumps out from the full height basement by air sealing the perimeter, also installing 4 inches of rigid foam. After insulating the knee wall floor areas, the crew weatherstripped and insulated a full size access door leading to the attic area and installed an additional plywood access hatch for us inside one closet used to enter behind some knee wall areas. All other existing access hatches were insulated and weatherstripped. We had decided not to insulate walls which would have disturbed the original exterior clapboard and finished interior plaster walls avoiding many drilled holes, patching, and painting. However, the Calnan crew was able to take advantage of the balloon frame construction and hose a fair amount of cellulose into the accessible areas. We were pleased with the result while knowing this method was by no means as complete or efficient as a proper wall insulation methods would have provided.

This is a great company: honest, reliable, competent, friendly. I was able to schedule an estimate within few days of my call. Rob Calnan, the owner, came over and did the estimate. He very clearly explained the various options available and gave me an accurate estimate. He demonstrated a real understanding of how older houses are built and predicted what difficulties he might encounter on the job. Loretta Ryan, who runs the office, was extremely helpful coordinating the work with the roofing company. She was very always easily available by phone or email. On the day of the job, Rob arrived when he said he would. They got the job done quickly and cleaned up after themselves completely. While at the house Rob took a look at a basement crawl space that needed to have the insulation redone. He gave me detailed instructions on how to do it myself and save money, if I so chose, although he was very willing to do the work himself. After the job, Rob filled out the paper work for me to get a rebate from my gas company for insulating my home. I'm very satisfied with the work and will hire them again.
Description of Work: Rob Calnan and his crew insulated an inaccessible crawl space over an old addition in our house. They had to coordinate with the roofing company to install the insulation while the roof was up over this section of the house (which we were having re-roofed). They also air-sealed and insulated the attic with blown-in cellulose insulation.

I am very pleased with Rob and his crew. He was quick to come out for an estimate, and did a very thorough walk-through in the entire house(including the basement). His sister, Loretta, was quick to get back to me on deposit and schedule issues, and sent copies of everything electronically. They did the job in less time than originally planned, and for a bit less money than planned(due to insulation that they ended up finding in some parts of the house). In addition, they were very careful with our old, brittle siding and offered to try and patch up an area in our roof that's had some leaking problems around an old vent pipe(despite a new roof last year). All in all, this was a good experience and I'd suggest them to everyone. Their quote DID come in higher than some other local reputable contractors, but their use of cellulose over fiberglass. The care that Rob took during the estimate and job was well worth it. They completed all paperwork for utility rebates(national grid).

Calnan's was fantastic. Rob and his crew are pleasant, prompt and professional. Rob used an eco-cellulose product in the attic and walls which was an added bonus. I had recently installed a forced air gas furnace and noticed a big difference in how long my home retained the heat before the furnace kicked on again after the insulation was installed. Furthermore, Rob and his crew identified a small gas leak caused by a defective valve on my new equipment while they were working in my basement. Great experience.

From start to finish, the performance of the company was outstanding. Rob showed up on the dot with a crew of three others. They promptly set to work, first removing assorted junk from the attic (including some old, improperly applied insulation) before spraying in cellulose to a value of R50. In the process of clearing out the attic, Rob noticed that an exhaust tube that vented from a second-floor bathroom to an exterior wall had been torn, apparently from a bird's having entered from the outside and made a nest in the tube. The consequence was that the bathroom fan, once switched on, was venting straight into the attic. Rob hopped in his truck, drove back to the warehouse and returned with a length of new and better exhaust tubing (insulated even) that he secured in place. By the time I heard about the problem and glanced into the attic to check on the job's progress, it had already been fixed. This is literally going the extra mile, and at no extra charge beyond the estimated price I had been given earlier. It was typical, I think, of the job well done that I received from this company. Rob and his crew were polite, methodical and careful to use drop cloths everywhere, leaving the house if anything neater than they found it.
Description of Work: The company insulated my attic, the perimeter walls of my basement, and the roof of a pantry addition in my 1910-vintage small frame house, which badly needed it. Rob, the owner, came and spent more than an hour giving a through examination of the house and discussing options with me. (As one example of his observant nature, Rob noticed that I had old knob-and-tube wiring in the attic, and recommended that I have an electrician inspect and upgrade the wiring before proceeding with insulation. No other company even noticed the possibly unsafe condition.) A day or two later, I received a detailed estimate and cost break-down of the job by email. Although this company charged the highest of three estimates I gathered, I was confident they would provide the best and most complete service, based on the careful, business-like way they approached things and the positive impression I had of Rob's knowledge of old houses and personal commitment to doing the job right.

Excellent communication of work to be done, at the estimate visit; realistic price estimate. Workers arrived on time, worked quickly and efficiently, and left everything exactly as they had found it on arrival. They obviously care about doing work well, safely and to customer satisfaction. Mr. Robert Calnan was pleasant and courteous --- a pleasure to do business with! Best of all: the rooms are now 10 degrees warmer than they were prior to the installation. We got immediate satisfaction!

Rob Calnan came to give us a quote, which arrived promptly following his visit. He was clearly comfortable working with old houses, and not intimidated by the challenge of never knowing exactly what you'll find when you work on one. His quote seemed reasonable, but we didn't get a second one so can't say for sure how it compares. Once we'd gotten an electrician in to disconnect a run of knob and tube wiring, Rob and his brother Dan came very quickly, working in very cold weather to insulate a crawl space. We then had an ice storm that made our road impassable to his truck, so the rest of our job was understandably delayed for 6 days. They finished the rest of the work in a day and a half, explaining the one piece that they were unable to do once they got a really close look at the area, and cutting the price immediately for that part of the job. They cleaned up after themselves, didn't track snow/mud in, and were completely professional. They were a pleasure to have around.
Description of Work: Company cleared old shingles out of and insulated a crawl space (ceiling of crawl space/under floor of room above), insulated the space under the windowseat in a bow window, and insulated the floor of our attic (including down both sides of and under the stairs). All insulation was blown-in cellulose, with very minor amount of fiberglass used in locations where cellulose wasn't supported.

The two gentlemen I worked with are brothers and I can't rate them highly enough. Their honesty and courtesy are amazing. The doors are totally well insulated now, which will mean a lot during the winter. They communicated well, were on time, totally pleasant to work with. Plus they are among the companies in my area approved for rebate from NSTAR for energy saving work, and this means I will be getting a percentage of money back. I found them via Angie's List plus from a friend who used them, and they are top quality people I totally recommend.
Description of Work: They weather stripped all the doors in my house to make them more insulated and weather tight. I wanted the house further insulated, but these honest people checked and said it was already insulated enough and it wouldn't pay to try to add more.

ROB STOPPED BY AFTER I GOT HOME FROM WORK. HE LOOKED AT THE JOB AND TOLD ME EXACTLY WHAT HE WOULD DO. SINCE THE CRAWL SPACE COULD BE ACCESSED FROM THE OUTSIDE HE SAID HE WOULD DO THE JOB ON A RAINY DAY WHILE I WAS AT WORK. I EXPECTED THAT TO BE ABOUT A MONTH AWAY GIVEN HOW BUSY I KNEW HE WAS. THE FOLLOWING WEEK I RECEIVED A CALL SAYING HE WOULD BE OVER THAT MORNING AND TAKE CARE OF IT. WHEN I GOT HOME THAT NIGHT I LOOKED AT THE JOB AND WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH HOW TIGHT AND SEALED EVERYTHING WAS. ALL THE SEAMS WERE SPRAYED WITH FOAM INSULATION AND I COULD SEE FROM THE BASEMENT THAT THE PIPES WERE TOO. THE CRAWL SPACE WAS FAR CLEANER THAN HE FOUND IT, AND THE OLD INSULATION WAS NEATLY BAGGED AND PLACED ON MY CURB FOR TRASH PICK UP THE NEXT DAY. I WON'T KNOW UNTIL ABOUT FEBRUARY IF THIS WILL DO THE TRICK, BUT I AM CONFIDENT IT WILL AND AM CONFIDENT ROB WILL STAND BEHIND HIS WORK.
Description of Work: I NEEDED THE CRAWL SPACE BENEATH MY PANTRY AND HALF BATH RE-INSULATED TO PREVENT THE SINK PIPES IN THE BATH FROM FREEZING. OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, THESE PIPES WOULD FREEZE FOR A FEW DAYS DURING THE COLDEST DAYS OF THE WINTER AND I FIGURED IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE MY LUCK WOULD RUN OUT AND THEY WOULD BURST. AFTER A PLUMBER LOOKED AT THE SITUATION, I WAS TOLD HAVING THE CRAWL SPACE RE-INSULATED WOULD BE MY BEST BET.
