I wanted a second opinion on a roof unit and I was potentially looking for a new service provider. I explained this both times I called and was promised a call back both times. I said I understood that they may be busy with regular customers during the hot spell but wanted to get things started and make an appointment. No call back, no nothing.

Response from Burns Mechanical Corp
Our apologies for not responding. As you can know this summer has been extremely hot and yes we try to accommodate our existing customers and prioritize them accordingly. We do our best to get back to everyone that we can, however some times there are just not enough hours in the day/week to allow that to happen. We get a lot of calls during these heat waves from many people who we have never worked for the past who are searching frantically for help because their own service contractor is also busy. It is our pleasure to take on new customers in these times when we can. We hope you found someone to give you the second opinion you were searching for and are comfortable with what ever type of system you now have. Regards, Bob & Chris Burns Burns Mechanical Corp.

Recomended by a close relative after some other interviews we choose Burns because he spent the time explaining and gave us some helpful ideas, he was local and he gave me his cell number and was responsive. we where doing and addition and needed to change our heating system from one zone steam radiators to a full house HVAC system also with hydronic heated floors in the mudroom and bathroom. the initial estimate was 2.5 weeks that didnot include a remediation contractor who I had to hire to remove the existing system, radiators and pipes etc. This is a big complicated job, many pieces, we are now in week 5 with the end a few days away. We have lived with very good friends for 5 weeeks. Ask for constant updates and plan on not being there for awhile. My situation was special because I have bad lungs and can't be around dust.
Description of Work: Make sure to get a detailed cost breakdownAlso a reasonable time table of different stages of the job.Agree on payment increments upfrontAsk when it is appropriate for you to leave the house during installation.IAlso ask for telephone updates. We had a natural gas boiler converted to hot water, radiators and pipes removed, and a complete house a/c and heating system installed, also with three heated tile floors. from one zone we know have 4 zones plus two for the floors. Also a 80 gallon super store water tank. it is a great system, somewfat complicated it took 5weeks to install during our additions construction.

We ended up using another contractor thru AL that was able to come out same day. It ended up being a bad fuse on our condenser. Surprised this company that did the install could not recommend us to check and try that first. Would not use again.
Description of Work: They originally installed both our ac and furnace. On a 90 degree day they were not available to come out. They said if they could come out another day they would charge 200.00 just to get to us for travel and to diagnose the problem. It is only 20 miles between our house and their business location.

We are sorry to hear of your unhappy experience. We at Burns Mechanical do our very best to accommodate all of our customers in as timely a manner as possible. Unfortunately in the middle of a heat wave you can imagine that the service list was lengthy and we obviously can only service as many customers per day that our technicians are physically able to handle. We wish you well with your new service provider.

For seven years, we have had various problems with our hydronic heating/cooling. Over that time period, various contractors have added bits to, subtracted bits from, and complained about, the system, but none could nail all the problems until Burns Mechanical. Jason was extremely knowledgeable to begin with, then carefully figured out how the system was supposed to work, investigated the potential sources of difficulty, explained each step clearly, made suggestions, provided cost quotes for various items, discussed alternatives, and fixed the problem. While it's only been a few days, most of the situations that caused problems have come up, but the system finally does what it's meant to do. We're very pleased and fully intend to use Burns for any future heating/cooling needs.
Description of Work: Burns Mechanical (Jason) studied our multi-zone Heating/AC system with our problems in mind, then removed and replaced the aquastats that had been retro-fitted onto the system (so the thermostat will know whether heating or cooling is needed without our having to flip a switch), rewired the priorities (so we don't get blowing cold air instead of heat when someone is taking a bath or shower), and replaced a piece that controls the fan.

Very well. I had removed the motor from the housing to read the model no. and mfgr. The service man did the same and tried to find replacement parts. When this couldn't be done he went about finding a new fan and motor. He found one and installed it the same day. It was a little different so he had to modify the unit to make it work. He did this to our satisfaction. The unit has worked well since.
Description of Work: Replaced motor with fan on condensing unit. Fan shaft had rusted out and broke. The unit was too old to find replacement parts i.e. new fan shaft. Also checked out unit for proper performance.

We originally called another contractor that we have used for many years. That contractor came out, but then waited a week to give us an estimate. They believed that our AC units and blower would need to be replaced. After calling them a few times, they gave us an outrageous price and I looked on Angies list for a new contractor. We called Burns. They were unable to come out right away, but called a few days later and someone was out at the end of the week. They did the job on the spot and everything is working well. We are very pleased with the work and the price and will definitely use Burns again.
Description of Work: Repaired wiring system in A/C unit. Another A/C unit was low on gas, charged with 2lbs of refrigerant.

They did the work without messing up the house too much, always using pads and cleaning up dust. As it happens, Burns's quote was lower than several other vendors, though about $1,300 higher than the lowest bid. The owner, Bob Burns, is a thoughtful guy who explored a lot of alternatives before agreeing that the system as designed by our engineer was in fact the optimum one. I would have confidence in using Bob to design a complete system.
Description of Work: Installed a 4-ton central A/C system in a Deck House. This was a challenging job due to the fact that a Deck House has no basement, no attic, and hardly any walls. The solution involved running a duct up through a kitchen cabinet, cutting shelves in half, and keeping the cabinet functional for smaller items. We worked with an HVAC engineer ($1500 for the design) and the cost of the install with Burns was $14,300 (tried to put that in the appropriate field here but Angie's List software would not accept it).

Mr. Burns was extremely impressive to begin with: he returned our initial phone call immediately and scheduled an appointment right away. When we met with him, he went through the home in detail, proposed creative solutions to the challenges it presented, and was very willing to listen and respond to our concerns and suggestions. When he left that afternoon, we were very excited at the possibility of working with him. As soon as possible, we sent him copies of the floor plans, as he'd requested, so that he could make a detailed engineering review and propose a solution. We never heard from him or his company again, despite leaving two messages on his company's answering machine, asking him to call us back. We are very disappointed that this contractor simply vanished without telling us that he was no longer interested in the project. We wasted two or three weeks waiting on a response that never came, which delayed this project, and thereby delayed our move into the home.
Description of Work: Mr. Burns was interviewed for a heating and A/C project that we knew would be very challenging. The home is a contemporary(Bauhaus Style)home with no A/C. It has a flat roof, no attic, no existing ductwork, and a complex, open floor plan.

Bob Burns and his crew are great. From rough to finish their work was top notch. We encountered many obstacles along the way and they handled everything in a very professional and prompt manner. Erik did a lot of the technical work and I am happy to say that my boiler system looks like a work of art. There are 8 separate zones and all of them are level and easy to access. Twice during the first year, Bob came out personally and set the interior computer systems to help us find our most efficient automatic settings. I would happily recommend Bob and his crew to all other list members.
Description of Work: Burns Mechanical installed the Heating and Air Conditioning in our new home back in 2007. We built a 3,000 square foot home with Central Air, Radiant Floor Heating and both forced hot water and forced hot air Heat Systems.. with an additional in-law apartment on a separate zone. Bob recommended a great Humidifier and also put a heating system in the garage. They also installed the Hot water tank and a Stainless Steel Oil tank. The outside systems are state of the art, stainless steel and ultra quiet.

They were very good to deal with. They were responsive, prompt, and did good work. When there was a problem, they quickly fixed it and they are taking care of any ancillary problems. They are familiar and comfortable installing the latest technology, and were very informed in answering our many questions about the best system to put in.
Description of Work: Burns installed a combination radiant heating system and forced hot water using our existing radiators. They also installed AC on two floors. They used the latest technology in both categories.
