Two men came. One reported cracks and broken tile in the furnace flue so don't know if he cleaned it much. The other cleaned the fireplace, neatly, and the fireplace flue, and found the jammed damper was caused by a dead squirrel, which he of course removed, and now it works fine. The first man recommended installing a stainless steel chimney liner, rain cap, and new clean-out door for $3,200, alas.
Description of Work: Had inoperable fireplace damper; hadn't cleaned chimney in years so called provider to fix both.

We've had our 100+ year old house for 16 years and never had anything done to the chimney. When a guy performing an energy audit looked for insulation in our attic he noticed the chimney was leaking water. Had trouble finding a place that would specialize in chimneys - most are roofing companies who do chimneys on the side. Boston's Best gave it a close inspection and saw the chimney needed to be replaced (cost $1462) because the mortar was missing or loose and the bricks moved freely. Apparently some repairs done along the way by well meaning roofers using caulk not suitable for chimneys had only made things worse. Also recommended coating the inside of the chimney inside the attic with FSB (for additional $425) - sort of like a fiberglass cast that would seal it up to make it watertight. Scheduled job for April and gave a deposit. They confirmed the day before and arrived on time with 3 men and did all the work in one day. We are thrilled with our new chimney! If you need chimney work done this is the place to go. Don't just ignore your chimney like we did! They gave us $100 Angie's List discount.

Everything went very easily; they came out quickly for an estimate, were able to schedule the work relatively quickly thereafter and completed the project in a day. we have a chimney cap keeping critters out and the flashing that the squirrels have eaten was covered in karnack, which is sort of a tar like substance --no more obvious rain leaks into the attic, so all seems good to me! the folks in the office were easy to deal with as well.

Response from Boston's Best Chimney
I'm sorry you were not happy with the proposal you received. Looking over the proposal nothing out of the ordinary stands out to me, so I'm inclined to think that we're not comparing apples to apples. There are a total of 285,000 BTUs between 2 appliances. NFPA54 charts require an 8" corrugated or 7" smooth wall (hybrid) liner to carry these numbers which is a more expensive material to use, but required. The flue dimensions as it stands will not allow for a 7" liner to pass, therefore the existing flue tiles need to be removed in order to accommodate the appliances venting into this flue. This is an intrusive and labor intensive process for dust control. The project as proposed, would be (2) full days worth of work from preparation to clean up, which includes not only the liner and tile removal, but also all new breeching pipe from the appliances to the chimney (lateral run) and cast-iron cleanout door. It is not a one day, in-and-out type of installation, Also, the proposal submitted is for $4300 not $4600, as indicated.

They were to arrive between eight and nine but he called to say that they would be thirty minutes late. They only needed the cellar to be opened. The rest of the work was done through the roof. It was a rainy and cold day but they worked hard. There was a small crew. Chad Wilson was in charge and he was the one who gave me the estimate of work and repair. Around one thirty, he had to take the crew back to Waltham and he had to pick up one more section. He came back and was done around four. They cleaned up the work area and it looks amazing. Chad showed me the work that was done and explained it to me. Next spring, I need an inspection and he said that cleaning would be between three to five years. Our two family has two fireplaces that are fine for fires. Our home was bulit in 1924 and this was the first work that we are aware of done for the chimney. When he left, I called Best Chimney to pay and they want me to send the coupon to them. It was for one hundred dollars. I am pleased with the work and feel that our home is safer now. I would recommend them highly...
Description of Work: Our chimney was lined with M-Flex ovalized steel. Our chimney is about thirty feet. A 17 by 29 stainless rain cap with crown minor repair was done. He also installed at no cost a clean out door so it would be easier to clean the chimney out. We have two water heaters and two oil heaters that were all in this package.

They were fantastic to work with from the office staff to the guys who worked on our chimney. The job was not your ordinary chimney repair and Chad and his team came up with a solution and it came out great. They installed a stainless steel stack to replace the brick and it works perfectly. I would most certainly recommend them for anyone who needs chimney work done.

In both situations they did a good job. The only thing I should have done was not have the chimney stove pipe cleaned. It had to be replaced. That was my problem not theirs. I would recommend Boston Best Chimney. Thank guys for a job well done. I would like to add they responded very quickly for the quote as well as the work to be done.:)

They installed 28' of 5.5 M-Flex chimney liner (316L) and a 17x29x10 cap. |It took 3 different liners before they could find one that was flexible and strong enough to be maneuvered past a bend at the base of the chimney. They persevered and happily the last one was a perfect fit. |I also received a 5% senior discount.

Service was generally fine. The two reps were okay, one being far more professional and knowledgeable than the other. However, I felt that they were very quick to do the chimney sweep - up and down once with the wire brush. The damper (and its handle to close) remains encrusted with soot. They did not go to the roof to inspect the chimney cap as they suggested they would do when I set up the appointment. Their inspection of the boiler flue seemed to be a mere glance, granted the boiler is in relatively good state.

Went very well. Had not used this particular fireplace for 25 years and wanted to make sure all was well. Minor repairs turned into much more more because of deterioration of flue box, stack and replacement of upper two feet of chimney. All of work was explained in detail and a price given which was agreeable to both parties. One days work was done when an unscheduled overnight snow storm halted everything for 24 hours. Workers very professional, neat and left the house as clean as could be. Highly recommend contractor.

I initially talked to Kaitlyn at Boston's Best Chimney who was very friendly and who set up an appointment for an evaluation. I had a reminder call the day before and the technician (Andrew) arrived on time. He inspected the chimney, showed me a picture of the damage, explained fully the work needed to be done, and the cost. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and I agreed to have him return to do the work. My experience with Boston's Best Chimney was very pleasant.......from beginning to end.

Matt did the inspection and made a recommendation. He was very professional and clear in his explanations. It was not clear at first which size liner would fit our chimney, but his initial recommendation proved correct. He and his crew did a very good job and left the place clean. The price was half of what others had estimated, but he used state of the art materials, and seemed very familiar with the installation process both down the chimney and providing good hook ups for the heating equipment.

Everything went fine. My only concern was the nice young fellow who came to do the service was in a rush due to the fact that he was suppose to have the weekend off for a vacation and he was told at the last minute he had to do this job. It just made me nervous that the job was possibly rushed. But overall everyone was wonderful and very nice to deal with.

We were not impressed with Boston's Best Chimney's estimate. The person they sent out spent very little time inspecting the chimney - he just made an assumption that a new liner was required. He didn't even go on the roof to look at the damage from the fire! His recommendation for a new liner would have resulted in an undersized liner where smoke would have come into our house. He would have solved this problem by making our fireplace smaller with a "smoke guard." He didn't seem interested in talking about other options. His charge for the estimate was in-line what the charges of other providers.

Response from Boston's Best Chimney
I am very sorry [Member name removed] was dissatisfied with our service. During the evaluation, cracked mortar joints and peeling tiles were observed from the base, indicating the need for relining, and an estimate for repairs was given. The liner recommended for [Member name removed] was a heavy wall stainless steel Rectangularized liner. This liner has a cross sectional area of 54.5 square inches and is specifically designed to reline flues without significantly downsizing total square inches. Installation instructions to its alternatives require several coats of cement to be sprayed, therefore downsizing the flue as well. When sizing a liner, firebox opening to flue size ratio must be addressed. When the ratio is off, additional draft inducers are discussed. Outside influences also play a part with poor drafting fireplaces. New windows, kitchen range hoods and bathroom fans all can affect the performance of a fireplace and because burning conditions are out of our control, we can not guarantee the functionality of a fireplace. With this in mind, the possibility of a future draft and potential future costs were noted. We feel disclosing concerns that could require any additional work is a good practice. The technician explained the process and cost. He was under the impression that [ Member's name removed] understood our capabilities, process, and didn’t have any further questions upon our departure. We have office staff that would have been happy to answer any questions or get in touch with the technician for any job specific inquiries.

I had an inspection done in November of 2012 and Rich did a great job of describing the work that needed to be done and answering questions. In addition to repointing of both chimneys and chimney caps, he also quoted liners for furnace chimney ($3200) and fireplace ($2000 for 2nd floor, $2700 for 1st floor). I did have anot In May 2013 Rich returned to repoint both chimneys and install caps. He and his team were excellent. The work took 4 days and the cost was exactly as quoted. He even sealed a crack that had not been seen before and he also sledged a slab on concrete in my backyard that I wanted to dig up, no added cost. The team was very clean. They hosed down the entire driveway and made sure to keep it as it was before the work. I highly recommend Boston 's Best Chimney and especially Rich. I will definitely use them for all my chimney services.
