I like that they showed up. I like that they basically did the job they were hired to do. What I didn't like was A: having to pay more and B: the fact that it took them far less time to do this than it ever had taken before. I don't really know how to gauge that because maybe the other people that we've gotten in the years past just have taken a long time to do it but it just seemed to me like it was a little odd that it took them 10 minutes when it usually takes other people over an hour. It just seemed like a lot of money to pay for something that took that low and short amount of time. That being said, the chimney does seem clean.

A great experience. After having dealt with a terrible provider on a previous Big Deal, Boston's Best was a breath of fresh air. The scheduling was handled by email in less than 2 hours, and the workers were punctual and professional. I'd purchased a fireplace sweep as a Big Deal and further asked for a camera safety inspection. After performing the inspection they determined that I needed some significant work in my chimney and smoke chamber, so they elected not to sweep it (they didn't want to do more damage). They went on to check my oil burner's flue without my asking for it, and showed me how badly it needed a sweep. They then performed that sweep and left me with a quote for the work on the fireplace. Later that week I got a call from them saying that upon further review of the pictures taken during the video inspection, they'd determined that the initial quote was a little high and they wanted to supply a new one. They also told me that they'd inadvertently billed me for the fireplace sweep (which I didn't notice) and promptly refunded that charge. They were a pleasure to work with and we'll be using them soon to get the balance of the work done. I really appreciate companies that are honest and that go above and beyond to help their customer.
Description of Work: Performed video inspection of fireplace flue and cleaning of oil flue. Also made recommendations re: safety of fireplace.

All seemed to go better than I expected. More than five years ago we converted our heating system from oil to gas and at that time it was not required by code to use a stainless steel liner for gas. Over time the original clay tile had also cracked so it was overdue for a new flue. Best Chimney gave us a reasonable estimate for the liner and also recommended that we also install a chimney cap. The crew arrived in the morning as scheduled, and I imaged that it would take almost all day for them to insert the new liner into the old one because I am a worry-wort and predicted unforseen problem-causing snags. It turned out that it took under an hour to install the liner. Best Chimney also parged the bottom of the chimney where some of the bricks were spalling. Their work was done neatly, professionally, and efficiently. In addition, they were very pleasant to work with.

THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST. We had the chimney swept by another company, which noted the seriously-degraded state of our flues and advised us that it was unsafe to burn and the repairs would cost approximately $10,000. We wanted a second opinion, so we contacted Boston's Best. Their guys showed up with a video snake rig so everybody could see the damage as they pushed this thing up the chimney. I was amazed by how bad our flues really were! They also advised us that it was unsafe to burn, but then went on to detail how, even if the flue were repaired, the chimney was undersized for our firebox. Their advice was to install a wood-burning insert and to make the repairs accordingly. We had the team back about a month later (busy time of year) to do the install. I picked up the wood-burning insert (NB: these are large and heavy, so you'll need a really-big SUV or a pickup truck to get it unless you're having it delivered) and these guys did the rest. The whole thing only took 4-6 hours (2 flues, insert installation, and a new clean-out door in the basement). Pete is incredibly knowledgeable and just the nicest guy you'll ever work with. Everyone on their team is in-house (and not like some companies where they say everyone is "in-house" but it's later obvious that they barely know some of these people). The finished product looks great and works wonderfully!
Description of Work: Installed two (2) new stainless steel chimney flues: one for the gas burner and gas water heater; and one for the fireplace. On their recommendation, purchased a wood-burning fireplace insert which they installed at the same time.

They came to my house and said they wouldn't do the work because there were repairs that needed to be made. I asked what repairs and they said they didn't know what without pulling the chimney apart. They said they would come back to do the work but it was over a month until I heard from them so I had someone else come out to do it. It ended up being a quick and easy fix.

Response from Boston's Best Chimney
The big deal is for an open masonry fireplace, but when we arrived on site, we found a wood stove. I spoke to the technician that was on site, and decided that even though wood stoves are more expensive, we would honor the price anyway. When the smoke pipe from the stove was removed for the cleaning, wood/drywall was found completely surrounding this area with what appeared to be a single wall connector through the wall. This is a code violation as there are clearance to combustibles regulations for safety reasons. The homeowner was immediately notified and informed of the situation via telephone and a quote for repairs given. The quote was accepted, and a date for return was arranged. Due to the busy season, we did not have any availability for repairs until January, however we were able to rearrange the schedule (double up another tech) and get this scheduled for approx. 2.5 weeks later. A call was placed to the homeowner as a reminder (3) days in advance. The homeowner did not call to cancel the appointment until just hours before we were due to arrive.

Good job for what was done, but BIG MISUNDERSTANDING that company did not acknowledge. I called for an estimate in the first place because when we used the fireplace, smoke and a weird smell emanated. The smell lasted for days after the fire was out. With all the work that needed to be done, I assumed that it would take care of the smell. But the first fire in early November brought smoke into the house and the weird smell again. The owner, Peter came to address my concern. He explained that the type of fireplace/chimney was a very bad design. Being built on the outside wall, the chimney was too cold to conduct the smoke upwards. Also, the rest of the house was bigger, and caused some sort of air pressure patterns which make the smoke go into the house. Peter said that this type of fireplace should not be used unless it is frigidly cold outside. One possible solution, he suggested, is Installing an electric fan to draw the smoke upwards. Cost would be over 2 thousand dollars. He did not take any responsibility for the misunderstanding. He did offer to take a couple hundred dollars off of the cost of installing a fan. I would have liked to know from the beginning about the bad design of my sunroom chimney. That way I could have considered other options, such as making it a decorative piece or converting it to something other than for actual wood-burning.
Description of Work: Main house chimney: Lined furnace flue with stainless steel. Cleaned fire place/flue Sunroom addition chimney: Put on new crown, stainless steel rain cap. Outside house at the bottom, installed water guard/flashing along the bottom to prevent rain seepage into rear of fireplace. Put cement behind backing behind old damper. Scraped off moss, and water-proofed the chimney with 2 coats.

I am sorry that you are not completely satisfied with the services. There definitely seems to be miscommunication. Looking back on all notes from each visit and the initial request for inspection via email, there are no notations of fireplace draft issues. Our first visit was to address a concern with a crack in the firebox, which turned out to be metal. It was found that water was coming in from various voids in the exterior masonry causing the box to separate. Although we could not perform repairs on the firebox, we recommended purchasing a metal fire back at a fireplace shop and masonry repairs to stop the underlying issue. Once work was completed, we were informed that the homeowner did not like the color of the flashing that was installed. It was discussed that the flashing would be painted and paint samples were dropped off for review. Once a paint color was chosen, we returned and painted the flashing as requested. This was done at no charge. I subsequently spoke with the homeowner and discussed the crack in the firebox once again and her displeasure with our proposed solution of purchasing a fire back. I arranged for the owner to go out and take a look. During this appointment, fireplace draft issues were discussed and possible solutions. A fire back had been purchased and placed in the firebox.

Boston's Best Chimney installed a wood stove insert in our fireplace in 2006 and supposedly lined the flue and did everything necessary to make it a safe installation. At the time I paid them several thousand dollars for that work. After that we had them back twice every year, once in the fall, once in the winter, to clean the flue. Two years ago they said that we did not have the correct flue liner (in spite of the fact that they had installed it) and they would not clean the chimney again unless we spent more than $2,000 to correct the situation. It did not matter to them that they had done the original installation, that we had paid them a lot of money to do it, and that they were asking for thousands of dollars to correct an installation that they had done wrong. Last year we had a different company come out to clean our chimney and they didn't seem to have a problem with it. However, this year, when we specifically asked them about the safety of the partial stainless liner that Boston's Best had installed, they said that it really was not safe. So for 10 years we have been living with an unsafe condition because Boston Best decided to take a shortcut when they installed our wood stove insert.

Response from Boston's Best Chimney
In November of 2006 a wood stove insert and surround was installed (no liner) for $470. At that time, installing an insert without a continuous liner was accepted so long as the clay tile liner is in satisfactory condition. In 2006, the tile liner was in satisfactory condition. In addition to the change in codes and standards, clay liners, unlike stainless steel, do deteriorate and will need to be replaced upon signs of decay. With our previous history as a consideration, a $470 credit was given and removed off the relining quote. We will honor that credit indefinitely, should you decide to move forward with the lining.

Andrew and Rich were the people who came. We found them via a coupon book and checked them out on Angie's list. Kaitlyn at the office was very courteous and also left us a reminder message a day before the date of the job. They came on time. Were very honest - told me what the status is and did not say I had to clean - said it was up to me. I chose to clean. They were in and out in much less than an hour. Left everything very clean in the living room. We received a $25 discount coupon on the job as well. Will hire them again and am recommending them.

Average service. I was a little intimidated by the gentlemen cleaning the fireplace and flue as one of the individuals expressed that we needed to have additional work done fairly immediately (in addition to the fireplace). His description of what needed to be done sounded rather concerning. Once my husband arrived home, the gentleman toned down the immediacy of what needed (or should) be done and it became a suggestion rather than a high recommendation.

I've been working with them since I bought my house. They have done various jobs, including re-pointing the chimney, installing chimney caps, a flue, regular cleanings, and most recently they stuck a camera up the chimney to have a detailed look at the liner. They concluded I need to have the chimney re-lined, and told me not to have a fire in the fireplace, or I might end up with a fire in the house! I could see the holes in the liner, so I'm saving my pennies for the liner. They are always patient, on time, professional, and do good work. I strongly recommend them - they deserve their name.

Rich and his team were great to work with and the work was done above and beyond my satisfaction The first time Rich visited was to provide an estimate. Rich's knowledge and candor made it easy to trust him during this process. The second time Rich and his team visited my house was to do a test for the flue liner. My wife and I were at work all day, and when we returned, it was as if nobody had been inside, even though the team had to constantly pass through 3 levels of thehouse to gain access to the furnaces and chimney. Previous experiences with other contractors have been less than favorable, as they have left marks and dirt inside the house. No evidence whatsoever of that with Rich and his team. The last time Rich and his team visited my house was to do the actual work. Once again, they left the inside of my house impeccable and also left the work areas incredibly clean. All in all, an extremely positive experience. I would highly recommend Rich and his team from Boston's Best Chimney to any of my friends and family.
