I was impressed that they took the trouble to call back - right away - and help me out.
Description of Work: I called about having an A/C unit installed. They called me back IMMEDIATELY, and told me that I actually needed a carpenter since I already have the A/C unit. I greatly appreciated that they took the trouble to call back and to advise me!

They are a family owned and operating company. The owner/father quoted the job and his two sons, along with others, installed the furnace. They were friendly, informative, and efficient. One problem occurred the evening of the first day, and they returned that night and stayed until it was fixed. I was very satisfied.

Everything was great. Gil, the foreman, was very responsive and answered all of our questions which we appreciated. Furthermore, he and his crew were on time, did a great job of installing the unit, and were good about cleaning up after themselves.

Ver professional, showed up on time and worked long days. They even came by a week in advance to jumpstart my old furnace free of charge. However, the quality of the work was poor and they refused some items. Issues included the following: - furnace was supposed to be on cinder blocks, it was not. Since this was written in the original agreement, they reinstalled on blocks - vent piping was installed terribly. They twisted all over the basement and even went in front of a window making it difficult to open. The hole they drilled for the siding looked like a 2 year old had done it. I brought this up and they refused to change it. I fought h****** this and they still refused. - ducts were not properly sealed and taped, I had to go through and re-seal everything they did. I would NOT recommend them based on the quality. They were responsive and professional and may be fine for a repair but not a new install.
Description of Work: Replace a forced hot air furnace with a high efficiency unit. Added an evaporator coil for Central A/C in the future. Piped the exhaust for the furnace.

We are confused by this review. We looked into our files and found a proposal made out to a David John on Gloucester St. in Arlington. This review came from a David John on Bailey Rd. in Arlington who said the installation he is writing about took place in 2010. The proposal we have on file mentions replacing furnace, reconnecting gas, electric, connecting new furnace to existing duct work and venting. There is no mention of placing new furnace on blocks or sealing/taping of the existing duct work. We also do not have any records of having to go back to the job site for any repair calls. We are not sure if this is the same person we did work for or if this person has mistaken us for another company that worked for them in 2010.

Jeff was great to work with. He responded quickly when I called for an estimate, gave us a fair price, and completely stood by what he had promised. He was great to work with, he and his staff were punctual, polite and went out of their way to work in a neat way. The job was done well, and he was a pleasure to work with. There was a small glitch afterward due to faulty equipment, and he responded and fixed itimmediately. I highly recommend his company.

Furnace & coil install: All in all, it went pretty well. For the furnace and coil, the sheet metal install took a chunk of a day. Then, we had to wait for the technician to have time to hook everything up. This took a little longer than I would have liked, but I understand that you can't always predict when each job will wrap up. Anyway, the technician hooked everything up, and after a bit of trial and error, everything worked. Condenser install: This was perfectly straight forward. They put down a pad, placed the unit, hooked it up, and got it running. There were a couple of pitfalls: The technician had trouble wiring up the thermostat I provided. Eventually, I sat down with him and looked over the manual, and figured out that he didn't have the wiring quite right. After resolving that, it worked. I provided a 20A GFCI breaker for their wiring, since the wiring was in a damp basement. They used 14AWG wire, so I had to replace the breaker with a 15A breaker. (I had 12AWG wire available for their use.) Not a big deal.

All went well. Jeff oversaw his crew and the crew seemed competent and knowledgeable . This has been a long ordeal of assessment and expensive heat and air bills over the year . Deciding what method was the right approach and resolution was trying and time consuming. This work with Jeff and B &'G went very well, appears to be the right choice.
Description of Work: We have known Jeff Bortone since sept 2006. He came to our home in Newton to evaluate the heat and air system balanced our forced hot air and central air system. He spent a lot of time at this and never charged us for his work. He was always responsive to our requests. We used B & G for service calls and regularly called Jeff with our needs for service and equipment for sheet metal, heat and and air and also he put in a central air cleaner attached to the main forced air system (HEPA type filter). They did the final cleaning of that heat and AC system before our selling. We moved to a new home recently and called upon his company again. We were having difficulty with our thermostats reaching their heating and air temps. The system was overrunning and not working right. We found out that the heat and air attic flexible duct system was very poorly designed and poorly installed by the builder's HVAC co. It impacted the total functioning of the heating and air system so there was. Virtually no air flow to the rooms in home. We called in B&G for an assessment of what was needed for a poorly working and designed system. He has visited the house no less than 4 times. We arranged the work to be done in April so that we could endure heat being shut off during work on both zones - forced heating and A/C system. The crew of 3 came in for two days of work. They disconnected both furnaces from the exisitng flexible duct work and attached with sheet metal directly to each zone's plenums. The issue was poor air flow and way too much flexible duct work that created extreme loss of air and no flow to the registers themselves . They redid the flexible duct work in attic and did sheet metal, removing the overly length flexible 18 'duct work at up 20- 25' long. It was a lot of waste, air that needed to reach rooms was caught up in duct work in attic that never travelled down to where it supposed to go, leaving house cold in winter , hot innsummer and over working the 2 zones continuously. The 2 furnaces and 2 compressors were evaluated for sizing for interior sq footage and they were adequate, so it was down to a redesign with the goal of a better return of heat and air flow. This now appears to have taken place, we are still evaluating, as it was just done, but so far so good!!

The Good - I selected B&G because they provided Carrier equipment, thinking it was a better brand. The Carrier models installed are feature by feature on par or less impressive than competitive models that others quoted. The Carrier equipment is good, but don't go by brand and SEER number alone. Their sub-contractors and Joyce, their secretary, are friendly a great help with answering questions. The equipment delivery and installation seemed to go smooth and we were off to a good start. We had one early issue with spec'ing an undersized tankless water heater and that was quickly addressed. The Bad - Things started to fall apart when they did the duct installation and system startup. They forgot to run a duct to one of the room's in my house. One of the condenser's wouldn't start up, the water heater wasn't working, the humidifier wasn't working, the thermostats weren't working. Over the next few days, one by one the subs came to investigate and were punctual and friendly. When the system started up, it was leaky, noisy, and unbalanced. Gil eventually sent Jeff over to help reduce the noise, put some sealing tape on some of the basement ducts, and open/close some dampers. It was better but still not to my satisfaction. The Ugly - I can still feel air blowing through the duct seams and equipment seams in the attic and basement. Also, the basement ducts were not insulated, B&G told me this was 'conditioned space' and therefore didn't need insulation. Despite having unresolved issues, I received an invoice from B&G for the final payment. I called Gil at B&G and he was insistent that insulating and additional sealing was not needed. The Unforgiveable - I needed a non-biased opinion, so I invited a reputable Angie's list HVAC vendor and the town's building inspector to our house. Both provided letters listing many violations. Our town's building code required ducts to be tested and pass a stretch code that only a minimal amount of air can leak through. The building inspector said that they did not pull sheet metal permits for their work, no leakage test was done, or get all inspections by the building department. Furthermore, they installed ducts in the attic with R4 instead of R8 and the ducts in the basement requires R6 insulation. *****Update 6/26/13 Since this review we had an independent certified leakage test done of the installation that B&G had performed. The air leakage through the ducts is documented at 25.5% on the first floor and 16.2% on the 2nd/3rd floor. We filed a complaint with the state's division of sheet metal licensure for not meeting air leakage standards and insulation requirements. In the end we needed to redo most of the ducts in the house to bring them up to building code. B&G rather than admit being caught on their mistakes and lack of permitting, has decided to sue us for their final invoice and we have counter-sued them for the costs of repairs. I will update Angie's List members here with the outcome.
Description of Work: This was a big HVAC job, converting an 1895 Victorian approx. 3,000 sqft over three floors from oil fired steam radiators to a gas fired forced air system for heat and A/C. We also were converting our domestic hot water system to a new high efficiency tankless water heater. The house needed all new ducts installed, new gas lines, new electrical subpanel, new humidification system, and to be divided into 3 zones. I wanted to make sure we had a new system, that was quiet, balanced, and cost effective. Jeff at B&G was contacted orginally to make the appointment for quotation, but Gil managed the job from the start. B&G is a company that was price competitive, not the lowest of the bids and not the highest. Another Angies List 'A' rating reviewer commented on Gil's abrasiveness, this is his personality but it didn't bother me. See below for the good, bad, ugly, and unforgivable details.

B & G could not disagree more with the above review and we actually went to Court to prove it. After a jury trial that took the better part of a week, the jury found in our favor and we recovered every single penny we sought, and the court ordered the homeowner to pay over $19,000.00 of our attorney's fees. The homeowner also had to pay his own attorney's fees as well. The there was an appeal to the District Court Appellate Court and the judgment was completely upheld. For the record the name of the case in Waltham District Court was B & G Sheet Metal Co., Inc., Plaintiff v. [Member Name Removed] and [Member Name Removed], docket No. 1351 CV 0032. They did a great job of minimizing the demolition needed to access the existing ductwork. The job took several days longer than scheduled but Jeff held true to his original estimate and spent the last two days finishing the ductwork himself. Once the new ducts were installed, it was easy to see how the old heating system was completely undersized. B&G did an excellent job, I'd use them again and I would recommend them to friends and family.
Description of Work: Our 1950s split ranch uses a gas-fired furnace to heat the house using old 4" sheet metal ducts. After meeting with five contractors for recommendations on our heating system, we went with B&G because it was the least invasive, most cost effective and clear proposal we received. Jeff was on time, polite and happy to explain our options.

I received proposals from 4 vendors for new systems with better energy efficiency. The B&G proposal was $4500 lower than the next lowest. After confirming with Gil at B&G that he was proposing the same work as the other proposals (not all estimates were for Carrier brand equipment), I accepted the B&G proposal. After deciding to work with B&G, I had several more conversations with Gil about whether it made sense to upgrade the systems to even higher efficiency. Though gruff, he was patient with me and reviewed the more expensive options available. In the end, I determined that paying much more for slightly more efficiency was not appropriate for my situation. We had a 2 week window in which to have the work completed before we were scheduled to move in to the house. Because of other tradesmen working at the house in the same time window, at first we decided to schedule the HVAC work for the week after we moved in. Since it was the middle of summer, Gil was very concerned that we minimize the time we would be living there with no A/C. To that end, two weeks prior to the scheduled install, as the schedule for the other tradesmen became more clear, I asked him if B&G would be able to install 1 week earlier than the original schedule. He was able to accommodate me and got the system in.The day after we moved in, we did notice some water on the floor next to the new air handler. I called B&G immediately and spoke with Jeff, who came out that same evening and replaced the condensate pump and cleaned up the water. We have had no further incidents. So far we are very happy with the system and the work, though we haven't needed the heat yet. The one negative of working with B&G was an incident between Gil and my wife. Having asked B&G to accelerated the schedule, Gil arrived prior to the installation day to take some measurements. I was at work at the time and my wife had escorted Gil and his helper to the basement air handler. Gil, who I had already observed is somewhat gruff in demeanor, complained to my wife that the scheduling for this job "was all screwed up" and said something about what the right schedule would have been. My wife, having not been involved in the process at all up to this point, took offense at his comments and tone. She phoned me and asked me to intervene. Not being present, I did the best I could to play diplomat, but Gil refused to acknowledge any impolite behavior. As a result of this experience, though I would use B&G again, I would caution customers to have a thick skin when dealing with the owner Gil.
Description of Work: Replaced all existing furnace and A/C in a 18-year-old house with original (builder) systems. House has separate attic and basement natural gas, forced-air units. Old systems were removed and new Carrier-brand systems were installed using original ductwork, exhaust piping, thermostats, and electric circuits. Work included media air filters for both systems and a AprilAire humidifier for basement system. The furnaces were 96.7% and 80% efficient, respectively, and both A/C units were 16 SEER

My experience with B&G was excellent. All of the B&G personnel were very professional. Jeff arrived on time to provide an estimate, and was willing to spend a considerable amount of time explaining my options (central a/c vs. ductless). He sent the estimate promptly, and came back out a second time at my request to help with making a decision about which system to use. The B&G staff who installed the system were also prompt and professional, and took the time to orient me to maintenance requirements, how to adjust air flow to different rooms, and other questions I had. Overall an excellent experience and I would use them again.
Description of Work: B&G installed central air conditioning in the 1st floor unit of my two-family home. I have an older home (100 years) with steam heat and radiators, so there was no existing ductwork to use for installing a/c.

Gilbert Bartone came and made an assessment of what I wanted done. He gave me an exact amount that the project would cost and told me when they could do the work. They showed up on time and did excellent work and cleaned up after them. I had three different heating companies come give me prices for the work. B&G Sheet Metal Com. Inc., gave me the lowest price even with a larger high efficiency heating system. Joyce, the receptionist was patient and helped me fill out the necessary paperwork to get an $800 rebate for the high efficiency heating system as well as a $500 rebate on the air conditioning system. This company was totally professional as well as personable and were patient as I asked the many necessary questions I needed answered for this job. I would highly suggest to any Angie's List members that they use this company or @ least get a quote from them before they decide on another company.
Description of Work: I bought a house that is 3,000 square feet. that needed a new gas heating system and @ the same time because it was forced hot air I wanted a central air conditioning system put in. I have an expression that all I want is to work with professionals. I'm usually disappointed. I went through six (SIX) HVAC contractors before I happened upon B&G. I ended up rejecting everyone else as they were either way too expensive, didn't call back, or otherwise seemed unsuitable for the job. Jeff showed up on time, reviewed the work that needed to be done and delivered a competitive quote when he said he would. This was not an easy job (crane, trees, etc) but Jeff saw it through. Unfailingly polite and friendly he was a pleasure to work with. I would use these guys again any day.

Overall, an excellent experience with a simple problem: over several months, I noted poor cooling of the upstairs by one part of my A/C system. I was fairly certain of the problem (low refrigerant) because one of the sight glasses in the system was not clear. In calling the B&G office, I explained what I had observed and the person who answered was very straightforward in agreeing that it was probably a minor problem. He arranged for a visit that same day, which occurred about three hours later than projected during the phone call. The person who came appeared efficient and friendly, diagnosed the problem within 15 minutes and took a total of 30 minutes more to add refrigerant and check the other system cooling a different part of the house. Significantly, he was not interested in selling me a much more extensive fix than adding refrigerant, which for the moment seems exactly what was needed. He was also communicative and had no apparent problem with the numerous questions I asked. From my perspective, this was as good as one could hope for.
Description of Work: Check A/C system and refill refrigerant.

I had the best experience with B&G that I've ever had with a service company (and there have been many experiences and companies). About 4 months ago, I had my air ducts cleaned by another company and they mentioned that I may have had some other leak or something in my system. I called B&G to ask them for advice about whether I should have it looked at. I don't know the name of the woman who answers the phones but she listened patiently and then had one of the gentlemen technicians get on the phone with me. He said it didn't sound familiar and gave me a few things to test out and told me to call back if it didn't get better. The duct cleaning turned out to fix the problem I was experiencing. However, a few months later, one of my 2 a/c units broke and since the systems were 13 years old, it seemed like a good time to upgrade to more energy efficient, quieter units. I called B&G (again, the same woman picked up after 2 rings) and scheduled an appointment. Gil (one of the owners) came out within a day and gave an estimate. He was thorough and explained everything that would be done. I felt very comfortable given Gil's demeanor, the reviews on Angie's List, and the price seemed right (considering an a/c unit I replaced about 5 years prior). The work was scheduled about 2 weeks later (this was during the massive heat wave) and in total, it took about a week. Throughout the process, any time I needed an update, I called the general number and the same woman (she's kind of like the dispatcher) would have exact details as to the status of my project or she would call me back with the necessary information. I should also mention I'm a neat and clean freak and the company cleaned up very well after themselves. I really thought this company was super professional, organized, efficient, and fair. It is extremely rare these days to have someone actually answer the phone and give you an answer. I must have called 10 times and not once did I get voice mail. I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Replaced two 13 year old a/c condensor units with new, energy efficient, quieter units. Added one air duct vent. All duct work was already installed in my home so no duct work was done. Just the systems themselves were replaced.

They did an excellent job. They stopped by and gave us a reasonable estimate; walked us through the process, and explained our options. A few weeks after receiving the proposal, they came for the install. There were two teams; the first teams cut the walls and holes and installed the units . The second team came the following week to install the electrical and plumbing, and to start up the units. The techs were very friendly, personable, and clean. Great job!

I think this member has us confused with another company that he called. We did tell him that we had no idea when we would be able to get there. We also told him we would call him when available and if he still needed us there we would be happy to go but he should call around to other companies. As far as the phrase "a crap load of calls", that was never used. We did say we had a long waiting list.

I highly recommend them because they were very professional and very good. There were half a dozen other companies that we called that couldn?t be bothered to return the call. I would absolutely use them again.

We were referred to B&G by a neighbor who has used their company for many years. The B&G rep (Jeff) was very friendly, professional, and seemed very well-informed. He was also very patient in answering our questions and giving options to remedy air-flow problems we had experienced with the old system. He was there for part of the installation and then came back a third time when we had a little cosmetic issue involving the new thermostat (which he fixed) and also to check on the seams of the new sheet metal. We had a very positive experience with B&G Sheet Metal!
Description of Work: B&G staff provided an estimate (one of three we obtained) for replacing a 20-year old gas furnace and then performed the work, tearing out the old system and installing the new one.

They were recommended to me. They have an excellent business reputation. They did a very good job. I have forced hot air, so it was a question about adding that without having to pull the house apart. They were very good and reasonable. I think the price was reasonable. They gave me a clear description of extra things that I could have if I wanted, which I didn't. They did the work they said they would do. They were neat and tidy. They were helpful afterwards when I couldn't figure out how to get it going. Someone explained everything to me. I would recommend them.
Description of Work: I used B & G Sheet Metal to put in a new air-conditioner for me.
