The B&D service tech came at exactly the time specified and replaced a small capacitor in the condenser and now the unit is running fine. Total cost: $200!
Description of Work: One of our central air conditioning units stopped working a month after it was serviced by the company that installed it 10 years ago. We were told that we needed either a new condenser ($1,800) or at least a new motor ($300-$400). We decided to get a second opinion and found B & D on Angie's list with great ratings.

I got B&G's name from Angie's List and called them to do an estimate. Gil was prompt in his response. He was among 4 other contracters that came and did estimates. He has many years of experience and that was helpful because our old home's construction is a bit odd and he had good suggestions. He was friendly, professional and easy to work with. His price was very reasonable. We hired them for the job. They require 1/2 down and then 1/2 after work is complete, which was a little uncomfortable. We're used to 1/3 before, 1/3 during and 1/3 upon completion but because of their ratings on the list we trusted them, and we're glad we did. He had two men come out and they were prompt, professional, tidy. This is no exaggeration when I say that the ductwork installation was bordering on artisanship! They fit ducts through the tightest, most seemingly impossible spaces beautifully. Drilling through the marble tile required many measurements in order to restore an old, covered over duct from the adjacent room. While Cory was modest in saying his accuracy was lucky, I'm very pleased that they matched up the hole to the hidden duct dead-on! (and I really believe he was pulling my leg....I don't think it was luck!) Another advantage to B & G is that they build real sheet metal ducts rather than using the relatively less sturdy flexi-duct that the other contracters suggested. We will have to get retro-fitted insulation with the real sheet metal, but the sturdiness of the duct makes it worthwhile, plus National Grid has a 75% rebate program to help with the duct insulation anyways. I would urge anyone looking to get heat or air conditioning ducts installed to go with B & G. They are consumate pro's!
Description of Work: Construction and installation of 3 sheet metal heating ducts to first, second floor of 3 family home. Required the workers to traverse about 20 feet of basement space and drilling through marble tile to complete. They also moved the exhaust duct from one of our furnaces to a different location on the chimney so the duct could have a greater angle of slope, thus bringing it up to code, and hopefully solve a fume problem we were having.

B&G was awesome. Jeff came to do 2 assessments and recommended we take more minor steps first to see whether we could fix the problem with less expense, rather than trying to sell us on a major job from the start. Also, he found that there were dampers inside our system that we hadn't even known about and he shut them to redirect the airflow to the bottom floor, which ended up saving us additional money from what B&G had first estimated. We really appreciated their honesty and that they were motivated to help us try things that would be inexpensive first. Their solutions did improve the situation significantly and the cost seemed fairly reasonable. We would definitely call them again if we need any work on the HVAC system. The only complaint is that they were so busy with other work when we called (May) that they couldn't do the work until September. But they set that expectation up front and we made the decision to wait for them to have availability.
Description of Work: B&G helped us fix the botched installation of our HVAC system (they didn't originally install it). Two years ago we purchased a condo that was gut renovated and a new industrial strength HVAC system was installed in the attic of our 2200 square foot condo! The main problems were noise (the intake vent was way too small for the power of the system creating a huge racket when the heat or air came on) and the fact that our top floor was always 10-15 degrees colder (in summer) and warmer (in winter) than our bottom floor. B&G returned our call promptly and came out to give us an estimate quickly. After assessing what could be done, and eventually installed soundproofing in the intake vent, they fixed some leaks in the lines on our upper floor, shut a bunch of dampers that we didn't know were even in the system to redirect airflow, and installed an additional vent off one of the main lines to the bottom floor.

Jeff was very punctual. His estimate was significantly below the other estimates we had received. He explained that during the summer there were several on going projects before us and thus the work began about three weeks after we signed the contract. B&G worked with two teams. The first installed the A/C unit and ducts and the second took care of electrical connections. The entire process took a little over a week. I was disappointed with the spatial orientation of the duct work in our closets which took up significant space. I recommend that before any ducts are placed you discuss the exact layout so there are no surprises when you come home. Additionally, during the electrical work a small hole was drilled into our bedroom and not filled. Despite all this we are very satisfied with the work; especially once the air conditioner kicked in. We would recommend the service to others especially given the cost.
Description of Work: B&G installed central air for our two story condo. The air conditioning unit was placed in the attic with vents to the rooms below. They installed ducts in our closets to access the kitchen and living room on the first floor.

We are very happy with the end result-the unit works beautifully and B&G was able to install the vents and return in areas of our house where they are less conspicuous. The estimate was one of the lowest we received. The owner of the company called us regularly in the days leading up to the job to assure us of the schedule. The work took about a week, and the guys who came to do the work were very nice and professional. We did have to do a bit of cleaning up after them, but for the most part they cleaned up after themselves. I also appreciated that the owner of the company was the person who came out to do the estimate, that he was our contact person on the project, and that he has personal experience installing the systems, so he knew what the potential snags would be. We will have to finish the wall-patching ourselves because they didn't do the neatest job, but this service wasn't included in our contract; they just did it as a favor.
Description of Work: We hired B&G to install central air conditioning in our third floor condo unit. As we have radiator heat, they had to install the duct work in the crawl-space above our unit, install ceiling vents, install an air return and access point for servicing the equipment. They did all the installation, electrical and plumbing work associated with the job. They also patched a few holes they had to make in a wall where they connected the electrical for the A/C to our main system.

I contacted B&G for a quote to install central air and their quote, which came quickly, was in line with one other contractor and significantly less than another. John and his crew arrived promptly to start the A/C install. When opening up some of the ductwork, they noticed two significant cracks in my furnace's heat exchanger, which was not only dangerous but was most likely the cause of my exorbitant heating bills. The cost to replace the exchanger would have been almost as much as installing an entirely new furnace, so I opted for the latter. John gave me a good price for the new furnace since I was already using their services for the A/C install. They were able to install the new furnace immediately so they could then finish up the A/C install. All in all, both jobs took four days to complete. The crew arrived promptly each day and cleaned up the area when the work was done.
Description of Work: John Bortone and crew removed and disposed of my existing gas fired furnace and supplied and installed a new furnace. They also supplied and installed a new split air conditioning system to work with the furnace. The installation included electrical wiring, refrigeration, piping and necessary sheet metal work.

Gil Bortone was prompt and professional. He mailed an estimate within a day or two. We decided not to have the work done because it was too expensive (probably because we are on the third floor and the compressor sits down on the ground). The estimate was in the same ballpark as another estimate we got.

JOHN BORTONE (MEMBER OF THE OWNING FAMILY) CAME TO DO THE ESTIMATE AND ARRIVED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WORK TO GET THINGS SQUARED AWAY. HE WAS COURTEOUS AND OFFERED MANY CREATIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR GETTING DUCTWORK UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR AFTER REMOVING THE WALL THAT CONTAINED THE PRE-EXISTING DUCTS. HE CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT ESCAPED TWO OTHER COMPANIES. THE LABORERS WERE EXCELLENT, EFFICIENT AND CLEAN. THEY TOOK THEIR TIME AND CARED ABOUT THE DETAILS LIKE PROVIDING HEADROOM IN THE BASEMENT AND INSULATING THE DUCTS WHERE NECESSARY. THEY ALSO WORKED AROUND A DIFFICULT PROBLEM WITH A LOW-PITCHED ROOF IN THE ATTIC WITH MINIMAL DISTURBANCE TO THE ORIGINAL PLAN.
Description of Work: INSTALLED NEW DUCT TRUNKLINE FROM THE BASEMENT UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR AND 2 3-WAY OUTLETS INTO THE BEDROOMS. ADDED NEW BRANCH FROM TRUNK TO AN OUTLET INTO THE LIVING ROOM.
