Looks like a different place! Although the patio was enlarged, the design does not make the garden look smaller
Description of Work: Moved a pergola, pourned better footing for the pergola, extended patio, fixed walkway, installed a step to improve the grade, planted a variety of plants that flower spring to fall. This was done in a city yard that is approximately 20x20 feet.

I have a small budget ($2k) and was interested in getting help landscaping our yard, because we have limited resources I mentioned the possibility of at the very least getting a design plan if it couldn't cover the build itself. The person that I spoke to very quickly said that they don't do landscape design (event though it's clearly listed as one of their central offerings) and that I'd have to have a project with a minimum of $10,000 to get a design plan. I mentioned that my goal wasn't the plan it was the landscaping itself and after a few very frustrating minutes of back and forth she said the minimum project they work on is $3000. This was not mentioned anywhere and prior to asking for an estimate I read the reviews and saw several projects under that price point. While their work and website look very professional I would only call them if you have a significant budget since they seemed annoyed to deal with someone who didn't meet their minimum threshold. I'll take my business and what to me is a very significant budget (and my savings!) elsewhere.
Description of Work: Nothing. I was just calling to get an estimate.

Response from A Yard and a Half Landscaping Cooperative
We were sorry to hear that you had such a frustrating experience when you called. We appreciate that when you decided to invest in a landscaping project, you are planning for a significant expense. We do try to have a detailed conversation with every potential customer who calls, because we want to provide the best value for you. Although we listed our minimum service on our Angie's List profile, the field where it was listed, "Services Not Offered," does not seem to be one of the fields Angie's List displays. We have edited our listing, so that this information is now clearly visible under "Business Description." There are many qualified service providers on Angie's List who may price their jobs differently based on their business models. We understand that you have other options who may be a better fit for your needs, so we try to be transparent about our schedule, pricing, and guarantees. Our minimum charge is based on a desire to operate at our highest efficiency and do the best job for our clients. This saves all of our clients money in the long-run by reducing overhead and downtime.

Yard and a Half did work on landscaping my yard several years ago, so I was interested in having them do this work, as I knew it would be well done. It was. The appearance of the lawn and garden is improved with the clean edge and maintenance is much easier.

We loved working with this company. We had long wanted to remove the ugly slab of concrete in our backyard and replace it with a winding brick patio. Geovanni seemed to be the only landscaper willing to work with us on the design. He reviewed a ton of sample photos and came over with sketches and to mark off where everything would go. All the other companies wanted to sell us on something simpler with common interlocking pavers but Geovanni was a true artist. We got the city hall pavers we wanted and, four years later, we still get a thrill every time we hang out in our transformed back yard. They also removed two dead purple plum trees and planted a Japanese maple and dogwood that are thriving.

The entire project was well-managed. We ended up scaling a few landscape related things back for now, and then adding a few small things that had to do with fixing an issue with our walkway (unrelated to this project and company). The team that did the work was great, and they completed almost all of it in one day with very little disruption. They were detail-oriented, and made sure not to tear up or destroy the surrounding lawn. The quality of the plant material and the design are very high. We are extremely happy and will use them again for sure.
Description of Work: We used Yard and a Half to landscape our front yard. They removed all of the old existing plant material and replaced it with new. The design is thoughtful and sophisticated. We love it. Eulalio was very professional, has a great eye, and a broad knowledge of landscaping. He was a delight to work with. We love how it looks, and have received many compliments.

I requested an estimate for my patio installation over the weekend and received a phone call from A Yard & A Half Landscaping within 2 business days. The call was very informative-- the individual with whom I spoke gave me a rough estimate over the phone based on the patio square footage and designed size of the retaining walls. Her estimate came in quite a bit over my budget of $5k to $10k. I appreciated that they were able to give me a ballpark estimate over the phone so that we didn't waste time with a site visit or appointment. I would definitely keep them in mind in the future when requesting landscaping or masonry work.

They are very good. It's actually a company that's now owned by her employees. The previous owner I believe retired and sold the business to the cooperative. I think that's the story. So, it's kind of owner-operated which is they put a nice future. They did a very nice job. I think at least the person that I've been working with, if you want a very formal trimmed looking garden, I think that's not, at least the work they've done for us is much more cottage style. I think they kind of follow what you want and will give advice if I say "Oh, I really want to plant x here". So they say, "Well, it doesn't have enough sun, it won't do, it won't grow". They planted a small tree for me, that was really expensive, and did fine the first year in the winter and then suddenly it just died. And, they replaced it. I think the hardscape, unless they change their policy, they're sort of lifetime guarantee. So, our patio buckled with the difficult winters we've had, and they came back and looks it up a bunch of stone on and reset them so that we could work forward. They come when they say they will. We've used them for many years, so they become so more friendly.
Description of Work: We do use a landscape that we did initially find, A Yard & A Half. They come I think roughly about once a month and they do a spring clean up and a fall clean up. I have a tiny tiny yard. They were just here last week. We've used them for several years now. There are usually two people at least. She did some trimming of a couple of bushes and shrubs, trimmed plants, did a few perennials. They also do hardscaping. They built a brick, front walk for us and a bluestone patio.

Eulalio was very professional and listened well to what I wanted, providing some feedback and suggestions that I appreciated. It took a couple of weeks for me to get the quote from him and I had to write to the owner to remind her that I was still waiting for the quote. When I received the quote, I was surprised to see the price and there was not a lot of detail as to what it entailed, although I asked for him to itemize everything so I could determine what I might hold off on for the future if the price was too high. Instead, I got a couple of lump sums. This made it very difficult to compare to other quotes I had received and to know everything that was included. In particular, I was taken aback by the price of $2,332 for seasonal maintenance (mowing, pruning and disposal of debris). This comes out to about $150 each visit over the course of the Spring/Summer, as compared to the $35/week I have been paying. Because it was not spelled out exactly what they were going to do to explain this huge price difference, I had no idea if I could remove some of the work to bring the price down. In any event, the price difference was so great that I could see no way to make sense of the work and decided not to go with A Yard and a Half. I did send him this feedback and did not hear back from him about removing some services to bring down the price.
Description of Work: I met with Eulalio at the appointed time for him to view my property and give a quote for regrading my yard, removing a shed, removing some dead tree branches, trimming hedges and seasonal maintenance.

Response from A Yard and a Half Landscaping Cooperative
Hi [member name removed], Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that we missed the opportunity to work together, and it sounds like you did everything you could to keep the process on track! In the spring, our project managers do get exceptionally busy, but that is no excuse not to get back to a prospective client. All I can say is that we are constantly working to become better at managing the many demands on our time, and to use technology to improve our response times. I have reviewed your proposal with Eulalio, and would like to clarify some of the factors for our higher price. First, our maintenance proposals are all-inclusive, so where you may have been paying $35 per mow, each of our visits would typically include the services which were listed in your contract, "Mow/trim lawn, hand prune shrubs & small trees under 15', hand-weed beds, deadhead perennials, clean hard scapes and dispose of all debris off site." In addition, with an average tenure of 8 years with the company, our experienced and trained maintenance staff take a personal interest in your landscape, monitoring health of turf and plants, making recommendations to address any diseases or pests. Second, we are fully insured and all of our workers are full employees. Unlike many in our industry, we do not skirt tax, overtime, and workers' compensation laws by hiring "subcontractors". This increases our overhead and cost to our customers, but we think it's worth it to know that if an accident or injury were to occur on your property, you would be free of liability. I hope that this helps, and if you are looking for a more wholistic approach to landscaping in the future, I would be glad to personally give you a detailed quote. Best wishes, Carolyn

I had called in order to get an estimate for spring and fall clean up as well weekly lawn cutting. The person I spoke with stated he will come by the following Wednesday at 10AM. He did not show. I left for work and called to ask why he never showed. The woman's immediate question was why I took so long to call. She should have first apologized and then ask questions later. Unfortunately I had not gotten any names and could not say who promised the estimate. The date and time nor my name had been recorded in their books. Because of the attitude of the person I had to hang up in order to not say something I would regret later. Your response has been read and I do believe someone is not telling you the truth......

Hi (Member name removed), I am sorry to hear about this frustrating experience. It's true that we don't have any record of your call or appointment. However, having heard our staff on the phone with many customers and prospective customers each day, I would expect that anyone who answered would take your concerns seriously and make every effort to help. Our maintenance manager in particular is known for his willingness to meet with clients on short notice. I have spoken with both our office manager and maintenance manager, and while they don't recall the incident, they obviously want for you to have a good experience with your company. We have a number of maintenance properties in your neighborhood, so please let us know if we can be of service. Best wishes, Carolyn

It went beautifully. The overseer helped with design as needed, accompanied me to several places to look for stone, very pleasant, flexible and informed. Once the work began, the crew were always on time, worked the whole time, were very energetic and precise. One day it started raining and I expected to see them retire to their trucks. Instead, they erected a tarp canopy and kept going. Several neighbors commented they'd never seen such hard workers. There was lots of proactive communication throughout the process. I was especially impressed with how careful they were to protect the property adjacent to the work area and the pristine condition they left things in each evening. I couldn't be more pleased with the product and I won't hesitate to hire A Yard and a Half to do another project.

I had been putting off fixing my front steps and had also been trying to figure out what to do with my yard. The steps had become treacherous and the back yard was just a mass of old shrubs with no real beds. I was stuck so decided to contact some landscape designers and see how it went. I met with Carolyn and we walked the yard, discussed what I liked, what I didn't like. She came back with a design that was beyond my expectations. She also understood that I would like to break the work up over a few years in order to control costs. This was not a problem for her. The first part was the back yard. The second, the front steps. In both instances, I cannot say enough about the workmen who were here doing the work. The were always courteous and respectful to me and my property. They explained what they were doing and immediately contacted me with any questions/issues. Overall, my experiences have been fantastic and I would defiately recommend them and use them in the future.

On May 28th, after nearly 6 weeks and nearly as many attempts by us to contact A Yard and a Half via email and phone to ask about the estimate, we finally received one from Eulalio. The proposal lacked any detail, had errors, and frankly, seemed high for the softscape work planned. It clearly reflected something written from notes taken more than a month ago and with no real memory of the home or our conversations about the project. We understand that spring is a busy time of year for landscapers, but it's no excuse for our experience with Eulalio. Both my wife and I are busy people, yet took the time to schedule, reschedule (at his request) and keep an appointment. We then followed up several times indicating our interest in working with this company, only receiving a response once, a week later, indicating he'd have something for us soon. That too proved untrue. Simply put, the long lack of response and the quality of the eventual response demonstrated that Eulalio (and by extension A Yard and a Half) did not respect our time. If you feel your time should be respected too, I would take a pass on attempting to work with this company.
Description of Work: Eulalio came out on April 16th to walk the property and get all of our requirements for the project. He was professional, asked good questions, and provided us with what seemed like good options and alternatives to the various ideas we were considering.

We feel horrible about this member's complaint because it is completely true that we failed to get back to them within a reasonable amount of time. What held us up was getting prices from our supplier who is, also, extremely busy this time of year. We realize, though, that is NO excuse for letting our potential customer wait so long. We apologize and we'll try not to let this happen in the future.
