If it would be possible I could give more than 5 stars. Jeff and Connie are very nice people and incredibly knowlegable specialists. They went above and beyond, conducting inspection of our house. I invited them because of presence of mold and odors. The house was thoroughly inspected not only for those problems we concerned of, but for all other possible hazards. Jeff and Connie spent as much time at our house as it was needed to complete all the aspects of required inspection. Each room, even every little space, furnace, AC unit, stove, refrigerator were inspected. Shortly after appointment I got detailed reports with photos and multiple very helpful recommendations. Now we know what exactly should be done in the house and outside in order to eliminate negative issues found by Jeff who is an expert in all aspects, related to different systems of house. Jeff and Connie are very kind and intelligent people. It was a real pleasure to spend several hours with them at our house. This appointment was life-changing for us. I highly recommend May Idoor Air Inspections to all who would like to make sure that environment of living places is safe.

The Mays were amazing, completely in a different league than anyone I've ever dealt with to do with anything home/inspection issues. This was a problem that every year for 6 years I would be ripping out the roof, walls, windows, and ceilings and replacing them trying to chase down the problem. Dr May found this as well as many other problems that were likely even more urgent. He isn't cheap, but if I had known and hired him years ago it would have saved me untold years of frustration, health impact, and money. I didn't know a service like what they provide existed..
Description of Work: Our house smelled and we had breathing problems - I had spent years and 10's of thousands trying to fix it.

Dr. May spent several hours at our house, carefully explaining his process and setting up his sampling equipment. He went room by room and explained what he was looking for and pointing out areas where he saw suspect mold or other issues. He followed up approximately a week later with a multi-page report about his findings and recommendations on how to address the issues. Highly recommend him.

From setting up the appointment with Connie to receiving the final report, everything was handled professionally, courteously, and expeditiously. We received an email confirming our appointment with detailed instructions for how to best prepare our home for the inspection. Jeff arrived precisely on time and took his time assessing both the outside of our house (to look for reasons that water was entering our basement) and inside (he even checked out the first floor addition room, a couple of our radiators, and our window-unit acs on top of the basement and crawl space). He explained everything he was finding along the way and offered suggestions for improvements. We received his detailed report by email later that evening and will be receiving a hard copy in the mail soon. I would absolutely recommend Jeff to anyone concerned about mold, bad odors, etc! I am so glad we had him come to our house--now we know what we have on our hands and what we can do to live mold- and odor-free!!
Description of Work: Our basement has had a musty odor since we bought the house, and we get water down there with heavy rain. We also have a crawl space under a poorly constructed addition that has been worrying us. We wanted someone that was highly qualified to evaluate the condition of our basement and living environment, as we now have two young children. We found that person in Jeff, who is an expert in his field, extremely thorough, and provides a detailed report describing the problem areas and offering recommendations for fixing the issues.

I called several companies to find out who would best suit my needs. Jeff May was head and shoulders the most responsive, kind and thorough. He talked to me at length about things I could do for the overall health of my home and listened patiently to all of my questions. When I contracted his services he was prompt with all of his responses and scheduled me in a timely manner and showed up on time. He spent 4 hours investigating my home (It's a flat fee) and taking samples. He was open about everything he was doing and he walked me through the house and explained his findings and recommendations-and what to look for in a person doing your remediation! He also prepared a very detailed report with photographs that was very easy to understand and had it to me promptly. There are plenty of companies that offer free estimates, but it's a conflict of interest I think to have a company tell you what problems you have and then offer to fix them. Yes, there is a cost involved but it is well worth it. I'd pay the same amount to fix my car to make it safe, so why should my house be any different? I would recommend him without hesitation.
Description of Work: I have a 1970s farm-style house way out in the sticks that we got from family, As soon as I moved in my health started to slide. I knew my house was making me sick, I wanted to know exactly what it was and why, and how I could keep it from happening again.

Jeff is fantastic and extremely knowledgeable about indoor air quality. I was very nervous about spending so much money on an indoor air quality investigation, and due to the severity of the allergies I had developed, and the fact he came highly recommended by my allergist, I decided to hire him. He ended up being worth every penny. He spent 5 hours at our house, thoroughly taking samples from various places in the home (think it was 15 samples total), answering our questions, and providing recommendations on lots of things he observed as he went through the house (e.g. cleaning of the radiators, running a dehumidifier in our basement, etc.). Jeff called me the next day to report the key findings (he found several different kinds of mold spores coming out of the vent of the central a.c. system and low mold growth in the basement carpet). I then received a very detailed, thorough report of all his findings with lots of information and recommendations that was extremely helpful. It took us 8 months to figure out what to do with the 5 year old central a.c. system that had mold in the air handler and line up a contractor who would install exactly what we wanted for the new a.c. system (the previous homeowners had installed it in a location that made it extremely difficult to service and we couldn't even access it ourselves to visually see the mold Jeff had reported so we had to trust his test results and figure out a path forward). Over that time, we reached out to Jeff with lots of questions and he was responsive every time which was extremely helpful, it felt like we had a partner helping us to resolve the mold issues rather than "going it alone". The new a.c. installation was just completed last week and sure enough, when the existing air handler was removed from the house and opened up, there was mold in it (even though all the previous a.c. service guys told me they didn't see any mold in the unit). We are so grateful to Jeff for his help, knowledge, and patience in helping us create a healthier home!

We called Mr. May on the recommendation of our home inspector, in order to inspect the basement insulation. Basement insulation appeared discolored and the basement was damp, so we suspected mold, and wanted to know the extent of the mold contamination. Jeff arrived on time, took air samples from the basement, gave us very relevant and useful information. The report with detailed pictures of the samples under a microscope were emailed to us promptly. He made good recommendations about how to do mold remediation.

He is excellent and a true professional who is dedicated to helping people have safe and healthy homes. His books are excellent and his home analysis has helped so many people who have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and is a leader in his field. My husband and I highly recommend Jeff and know many people who also have found his expertise to be superb and life-changing. We are very grateful to him for all of his help and support.
Description of Work: Jeff May is a kind and brilliant indoor environmental expert. He knows houses inside and out and is thorough in his analysis and recommendations which includes photographs and an extensive report. He can sniff out problems that other people do not see and has some allergies himself so has an extra talent for discovering issues that need to be resolved. He did an analysis of home repairs and vulnerable areas that need to be diagnosed and remedied.

Results were as expected: presence of mold and need for clean-up. Jeff was very thorough in explaining what he found, what implications were, and what was needed to remedy it. He also found presence of gas leak, which was potentially more hazardous than the mold. He was very prompt in issuing his written report, which is highly detailed. His office assistant Connie was responsible and courteous in rescheduling due to an unforeseen conflict.

Like many others we had ice dam issues over the last few years. After making repairs to outside, we were finally ready to paint the interior, but wanted first to confirm there was no mold damage. We wanted to get an unbiased opinion. We had heard from freinds who use a mold remediation company that they always found damage and were happy to give a quote to do the repair. May just does inspections, no vested interest in the results. Jeff may showed up right on time on a Saturday morning and then spent 3 hours walking me through the entire house, inside and out. In most of the rooms we were concerned about, Jeff did a visual inspection and told us there was nothing to worry about. In one room where he was concerned, he used a camera to inspect inside the wall and took some air samples from the wall cavity. As we were doing this, Jeff gave us many many helpful hints about air quality, heating systems, roofing. He is a true professional, extremely knowledgeable (he literally wrote the book on how to keep your home healthy), more than willing to share, honest, a pleasure to work with. In a few days he provided a very detailed written report on his findings, one again filled with great suggestions. May is the best, not the cheapest but well worth the peace of mind. I highly recommend him.

Excellent. The finished report gave us the information we needed to solve our mold problem.
Description of Work: We hired May Indoor Air Investigations to conduct an air quality inspection at our home. During the home inspection, Jeffrey identified the sources of various odors and explained how visible and microscopic organisms can affect the quality of the indoor environment in words that we were able to understand. Soon after the inspection was completed he sent a detailed report outlining his findings and offered practical advice for controlling and eliminating the causes.

Jeff is extremely knowledgeable and a mold industry expert (he's written 4 books on mold and gave me a copy of one at the inspection). He was very thorough in his inspection of the home basement which was the area of concern and went over and above what we hired him to do by inspecting the entire house. He answered my many questions and concerns with clarity and readily provided solutions to issues identified. Mold is an unknown and scary thing to deal with but Jeff's in depth inspection gave us confidence that we were in excellent hands and that no stone was left unturned. Jeff completed his mold inspection report very timely especially considering how detailed and comprehensive it was. He was also easily reachable and prompt to answer my follow up questions and advice inquiries. This is the second time I have used Jeff for mold inspections, will definitely use him in the future, and highly recommend him.

We had been away and returned to find an alarming, musty smell in the house. After several days we were able to narrow the source to a basement stairwell and, though we could not see any problem, we suspected mold. We hired Jeff May because he inspects and diagnoses but does not do remediation in the case of mold. We had been warned to separate the two procedures, for obvious reasons. We were also impressed by his prior reviews and his professional background. (He is a chemist.) He was able to come within a few days. He was prompt, professional and knows what he is doing. He also arrives with a variety of instruments that not all contractors may own or use. Within a short time, with the help of his moisture meter and infrared camera, he was able to determine a pattern of very wet bricks extending in a line to the ceiling of the stairwell and down into the basement. With this information we were able to measure from the front wall of the house and transfer information to the interior of our neighbor's house, which coincided exactly with a principal drain line running from the upper floors. They opened the wall and found water. Their plaster walls had shielded them from the odor. They eventually found the source of the leak and, after several weeks, our wall dried and the odor disappeared. With Jeff's lights we were able to see accretions on our bricks which we worried might be mold. Though he suspected not, he took multiple samples for testing, which turned out to be other chemical reactions to the dampness but did not include mold. Although the inspection took quite a bit longer than Jeff had anticipated, he stayed until he was able to follow through on his findings. We had the results of the mold tests within 48 hours. We are very glad that we hired Jeff May. We would call him immediately if we ever had a similar problem and recommend him without hesitation.
Description of Work: The provider, Jeff May, located the specific source of a strong odor, which turned out to be a leak in a major drain line belonging to our neighbor behind our brick party wall. With his instruments he was able to determine the wetness factor of each individual brick and so trace the line of the pipe and resulting leak. This information helped our neighbor determine the source of the leak. He also took samples of various accretions on the brick which looked like potential mold. Fortunately that turned out not to be the case.

He was wonderful. He's like an air consultant. I thought he was terrifically good for us. I know he's on Angie's List because he told me that when he came. He looks at the quality of the air; he's like an environmental consultant. He doesn't do any of the work himself, he like comes in and looks at our house and does an analysis and tells us what we need to do to fix our problems. He was great. He is extremely thorough and detailed. He merely wants to help us resolve our problems whatever they are. He's extremely knowledgeable about air quality and how to fix problems that has to deal with that. I would absolutely use them again and I would recommend them too.

Things went very well as we knew they would. Jeff arrived at our home and went through every room, the basement, and the garage. He took samples and particle counts. The samples were checked and he sent a report via email the next day. The report is very detailed and includes pictures of areas that could be improved, pictures of his microscopic samples, and his notes with recommendations. We have every respect for Jeff. He is widely known as an expert in his field and it is obvious that he certainly has earned this reputation. His fee seemed very reasonable and we knew, from our previous experience, that his service would be very helpful. We would highly recommend him to anyone is in need of help with air quality. We are very grateful that he was willing to share his expertise.
Description of Work: Jeff went through our home and investigated for issues of air quality. He took samples and made recommendations based on his vast experience. He performed an inspection for us in September 2011 and we found him to be very knowledgeable and his suggestions very helpful. We had remediation work performed for an extensive mold issue after that. The air quality has been much better since then, but we wanted his help in identifying minor remaining issues. He made a number of suggestions for improvement which we are in the process of implementing. Many we would never have thought of or been able to locate.

Mr. May spent two hours both inside and outside the house. He assessed the issues that could be contributing to mold development and provided solutions. He made a thorough photographic record of all areas he inspected. He tested for mold in the specified areas, using specialized equipment and visual examination. He provided an incredibly comprehensive report, detailing the results from his laboratory examination and identification of mold samples, his assessment of problem areas, along with corrective suggestions/solutions to the problems identified. His painstaking review of the outside of the house, including suggestions for mitigating moisture buildup that can cause mold, paint peel, and wood rot, was an unexpected bonus. He looked at the whole picture. I would recommend Mr. May to anyone dealing with a mold problem. His top-notch reputation in this field is well-deserved.

Jeff arrived on time, with lots of equipment, and pleasant as usual. I took him to my 3 areas of concern. He took his time evaluating each area and taking samples if necessary. One area was my laundry area, it has a awful musty moldy smell I thought it was because of a hole in the ceiling from a previous leak turns out it is my washing machine, who knew your washing machine could give off such a foul smell and house so much mold and the funny thing is I just cleaned it turns out you can take it apart so you can clean under the drum not just soak it in vinegar and bleach. Jeff also discovered another area that had Stachybotrys my worst nightmare but thank god I had Jeff come out and he found this because it was in hidden in the wall and if it wasn't for some bubbling paint and his handy tools we never would have found it. My husband and I have enjoyed both of Jeff’s visits. He is a pleasure to have around the house and if I ever have mold again he is the first person I will call but I hope I don’t have to, twice in 6 months is enough for me.
Description of Work: I called May Indoor Air to come to my house after discovering mold AGAIN. I found mold in my attic in January and Jeff came out and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable so when I discovered it again in my basement he was the first person I thought of. I contacted him right way; he had me send him samples so he could test it and maybe save the cost of him coming to the house since had been here before. We carefully followed his instructions and sent a sample, a couple of days later we got the dreaded results: Stachybotrys (most probably chartarum). There were also some clusters of Pen/Asp spores. Since we had no idea how far the mold went because it was in the wall and was only found because we had to cut the wall to change the outside water faucet we decided to have Jeff come and look at that and other areas that I was suspicious of.

Jeff is an experienced consultant. He is a little chatty and expensive but you aren't paying an hourly rate, you are paying for the expertise. He pointed out that there was indeed mold in the basement and showed us exactly where it was. He identified the places where field mice come into the house as well. He took samples We had his analysis back within 24 hours. His recommendation was to gut the basement. We had spent about $3000 last year on an independent contractor who worked very hard, cleaned every surface with disinfectant, replaced the false ceiling and the carpet and we thought we had the problem licked. But Jeff's analysis was based on many years of experience and quantitative techniques. It was a bitter pill to swallow--having to gut the basement and remediate the mold, but it was the right thing to do. There are alot of folks out there who profess to know mold when they see it or who will advise you to take short-cuts. We fell into that trap. Jeff knows his stuff. I waited to write this review until the basement was gutted to see if he was right and he was. I would highly recommend his services.
Description of Work: Jeff May performed an in-home inspection of my basement for mold in response to a request to figure out the odor coming from my basement. I had had the basement completely emptied and cleaned a year prior, but the odor returned. Jeff came to the house and spent about 2 hours looking at every possible source of odor. He was thorough. He took photos. We paid the extra fee to have samples done.

I got my referral from Angie's list. Jeff responded quickly to my primary inquiry for an appointment and we had a discussion as to why I wanted him to inspect the property that I wanted to buy. We set up a time and he was there on time. He carefully looked at the entire area in question and took samples. As well as a personable fellow, he is also a guy is a wealth of knowledge--a bona fide specialist! I've learned a great deal from him as far as proactively keeping mold at bay as well as what to look for while I'm on my quest in search of a new home. He provided a report via email within 24 hours that was illustrated with photographs he took during the inspection as well as detailed photos of slide samples he had taken from under the microscope. His report provided me with clear-cut, (and i assume accurate) information that helped me come to a conclusion as to whether the property I was considering buying had a mold problem that was big enough to back away from. In this case, for me, it was. Jeff called me to let me know he emailed the results and followed up with a printed report via USPS. Very professional. Worth every penny. A definite piece of mind.

I have a mold allergy which has caused me grief in various apartments, so I was very interested in having a separate mold inspection when purchasing a home. May Indoor Air Investigations had been recommend to me via friends, a home inspection class via BAE and various articles I had read. This is probably the best $700 I have ever spent. I knew there was what I hoped was a minor mold issue. The living room smelled musty and I hoped it was from the rugs and those could be easily removed (there was no air conditioning used in the house). Jeff identified the source of the musty smell being more than just the rug and let me know all the steps that would be needed to remedy the problem, not just in the living room, but all the rooms. He also walked around the outside of the house and identied all the potential places that water could get into the house and the extra steps that should be taken to prevent that. The best (or worst) part of the inspection was when he noticed the broken gutters and commented that could lead to wood rot behind the steps that could allow mice to get in - and then went down into the basement and found the mouse hole. There were more than a few mice living there (and some more mold). The inspection took several hours and the report was promptly deliver and included pictures of the issues and pictures of the microscopic mold spores (and mouse evidence). It also detailed exactly what should be done to remedy the problems (and it was all fixable). This inspection was as much about education on preventing problems as finding the problems and I highly recommend having this type of inspection, especially if you have young children, allergies or other health issues.

Jeff was referred to us by a dr in Fl. that my husband found while he was searching for help on what do to after you have been exposed to toxic mold. Dr in Fl said he only trusts a few people to test for mold and it just happened that Jeff was one and he lived close to us. We had one mold test already and it came back that we had toxic mold. Jeff contact us immediately and assured us that we did not have toxic mold, he had been doing this for 25 years and had never seen toxic mold before. He made an appointment to come to our house the next day as he was leaving for vacation the day after that. He showed up the next morning with his microscope ready to give instant results and and eat his hat if he was wrong. Up to the attic and went and the moment of truth....it was not toxic just like he thought, what a relief. He took and tested 2 more samples just to be sure and still none of them were toxic. We had Cladosporium, the typical kind you would find. He gave a very detailed report of what he found at my house. What we can do to get rid of the mold, pictures of the mold that you would see visually and under the microscope. He also gave us suggestions to clean our basement as he thought there was something suspicious going on in there too. He was full of suggestions on how to keep mold from coming back and how to have good quality air in our house. Jeff was full of information, so easy to work with, eager to put our minds at rest that we didn't have toxic mold and just plain brilliant. I cant believe I wasted money on another mold testing company and didn't discover Jeff first. When he returns from vacation I am having him come back to poke around my house for mold, mildew, signs of any potential disasters. These past two weeks have been so stressful with mold issues I want to be sure it is all taken care of and I wont trust anyone else to help me but Jeff.
Description of Work: Jeff was used as a second opinion to test mold in our attic.

This is a professional and skilled team of people who are passionate about their work and the underlying value of clean air and buildings. They are the experts and that is clear right from the start. At first I was upset about the cost of the inspection, but in the end, I think they earn the money (and it cost a lot more than this to clean up the place). I love that our home is clean now and a healthy place for all of us to live. So happy I hired them. They've also been helpful with referrals for everything that I needed to do/buy after the inspection. Jeff's home inspection is so thorough (he used to be a home inspector) that I still have items on his list that I haven't completed yet, but will. Highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Jeff and Connie did a thorough inspection for mold and other contaminants in my house--all levels and basement. They also inspected the exterior of the house. The reports they produced were thorough, professional, and very helpful towards figuring out what was causing allergic reactions here. Everything was completed in a timely and impressive manner.
