Considering the lateness in the year that I was having this done the work was done expeditiously. The quality of materials used was the highest. Mr Norris provided valuable input on my choices of colors. I was impressed with his knowledge of materials(down to the chemistry almost), colors and impacts of choices of both and effects of weather and temperature. Work was not done on days where low temperatures would have interfered with the proper setting of the paints. I consider the final product to be outstanding. The finishes are even and solid. I jokingly remark that the house may well be structurally stronger.
Description of Work: Pressure washed the house, applied primer coats to the exterior and trim, pressure washed side deck and side stairs painted house and stained deck. Also repaired woodpecker damage to the trim.

Ed Norris reviewed the scope of our job, was very thorough, and provided a detailed quote. We had tried to paint the ceiling ourselves and didn't do very well. We thought the ceiling needed to be sanded, but Ed said he wouldn't do that, but would probably put two coats of paint on it. We probably would have hired Beacon Painting, but Ed insisted that his crew would clean their brushes in our sink, flushing the paint into our septic system. We said that our septic service company had specifically said that paint, even latex paint, would ruin our system. We asked Ed to clean the brushes outside, but he said his crew would not do that, and that our concerns about our septic system were unfounded. Because our septic service was adamant about this point, we went with another painter, who agreed to clean his brushes at his business (which has a town sewer system).

Thorough, clear and detailed estimate, prompt worker, great job. Looks very nice. I would use Beacon again. I don't know how the price compares. I didn't shop around.

Just to be clear, the final price ended up being more because we added extra work painting the inside of the bulkheads as well as the outsides of them, and that work had not been considered at the time of the original quote. The price for the originally specified work remained the same.

Ed came to give us a quote. He took a lot of details and measurements so the quote was very accurate leaving no room for "surprises" upon completion. He had a crew of men come when he said they would and they completed the job in the time he predicted. The were polite and professional and left everything clean and tidy. Ed encouraged us to take a few days to "live with" the new paint to make sure we were happy with everything before issuing us the final bill. Very pleased with Beacon Painting and I will recommend and use them again.

The job took two men two weeks to complete with minimal rain/weather issues. The Beacon crew worked long days and took short breaks. They showed nice attention to detail - as though they were painting their own houses. I was in regular contact with Ed when paint questions came up. I found that he is quite knowledgeable and able to make useful suggestions. Although not on site, Ed was in regular contact with his crew. Issues were quickly resolved. Throughout the process, I was quite comfortable that we would get exactly what we wanted. Ed Norris has quite a bit of experience, and his manner made all conversations easy and effective.
Description of Work: In Fall of 2009, we received several estimates to paint the outside of our house (4000 sq. ft). Beacon Painting was the only business that was able to generate an on-site, same-day estimate. Shortly afterward, we again spoke with Ed (owner) from Beacon, sent him a deposit, and agreed to speak again in the early Spring about the paint job. Come Spring 2010, we finalized our paint colors and made sure that the needed pre-painting carpentry was completed. In early April, we spoke with Ed and leamed that his two man crew would be starting soon. Over the the course of two weeks, the house was thoroughly powerwashed, downspouts were removed, the trim was spot primed, and the house received a coat of primer and a final coat of paint.

If you do use them I recommend that you ask if they are going to power wash or scrape prior to the priming. They did work really fast and throughout the hottest day in the summer. They cleaned up well. We did need to call them back and they were responsive and took care of the issue. I would give them an overall grade of B+ if it was a rating on here.

An exceptional experience. Ed was very knowledgeable about paint colors and offered suggestions and different options. He uses a great paint product, a brand called C2 low VOC, whose colors look much richer than other well-known brands. He scheduled our work quickly, and was extremely flexible when we couldn't choose our master bedroom paint color (offered to paint one wall first and let us decide if we liked it). His painters were very professional, clean, and had an attention to detail better than other painting companies. His price was significantly better than two other quotes, but he still had excellent Angie's list reviews.

Ed arrived promptly and spent over thirty minutes with us walking around the house. Before leaving he gave us a very detailed quote in writing. Our major area of concern was the back of the house. The finish on the clapboards was badly faded due to an eastern exposure. After discussing the problem, Ed assured us that he had seen this problem before and was able to recommend a fix. Ed recommended the type of stain and paint to use on the clapboards and the trim. Using a sample we provided he was able to perfectly match the color on the body of the house. We wanted white trim and the white he chose was also perfect. The color that our decks are stained is out of production and he went out of his way to match the color using a sample provided. We have nothing but good things to say about Ed and his crew. They did a great job, our house looks better now then it did when we bought it new 14 years ago. Ed s crew was on time every day. They cleaned up after themselves and left all of their tools and materials neat and orderly each night. Their work is of very high quality the paint and stain were very evenly applied, the lines between the gray clapboards and the white trim are straight and well defined, and the over all quality of the job is very high.
Description of Work: Ed s crew power washed the house and the two decks. The prep work included filling in nail holes on the clapboards, removing old and loose stain from the clapboards and paint from the trim and sanding where required. The clapboards were primed and a finish coat of stain applied. The trim was spot primed and painted. Then caulking was applied as required. The two decks were stained. The stain and paint were applied with either a brush or roller.

After powerwashiing, the painters primed the house with the gold color. They did the front and one side on the first day and primed the remainder a few days later. Then Ed called to tell us that we could not use the colors we had chosen. After mixing all the paints, he told us our colors wouldn't go together and insisted we change. We never even got to see our original green or red. He suggested alternate colors. We asked to see samples, and agreed to pay for small quanities of the sample. We did not like his color suggestions at all. He was quite rude to both owners regarding our color tastes. We selected a brownish red for trim (the lightest of his recommendations). The workers put the first coat on the front and it barely covered and looked awful. We asked to see the final coat before any more trim was done and specifically said not to do anymore trim. The workers came and did the sides. He then told us it would take three coats and additional costs to use his color.
Description of Work: Paint a two family home. This included power wash house, paint entire house and trim in new colors and stain deck. The house was originally beige with white trim. Ed came to the house and met with one of the two owners. Ed prepared a detailed quote using preliminary color families (brown as main color, red and green trim and highlights.) He told the owner he used a particular brand of paint and we would need to select the specific colors from this brand. The job was scheduled several months out. When both home owners met to chose the specific colors, there was no reasonable brown in the brand of paint Ed uses. We chose a gold color for the main color, a red and green for the trim and highlights and and provided Ed with our three specific color choices. Ed gave no indication that there would be any problem or additional charge. The house was ultimately painted with the gold base color a cream trim and reddish brown highlights.

Response from Beacon Painting Co
The client filed this report immediately following a discussion that ended when I told her husband they left me with no choice but to take them to small claims court. She refuses to pay for extra work she does not dispute we did. Her complaint is littered with at least four falsehoods, two fabrications, and three key omissions, all of which attempt to cast me as the problem, when the extra charges because she ultimately arrived at color choices with her husband and townhouse-mates that were dramatically different than the ones I was told the house would be at the time of the estimate. Their ultimate choices were not finalized until two weeks into the project and a month after we were supposed to start the work. I never promised design services or color samples on entire faces of the house, and I was very clear from the start that work was required on her part to arrive at color choices. During the estimate, I thoroughly explained to her husband my paint store provided exceptionally good design services (at their house if desired) and tools to help arrive at a satisfactory color choice. She did not take advantage of the store’s services in offering consultations, and left me holding the bag. She agreed she did not want a house that looked like a toy house, which the original trim colors would have resulted in, and has blamed me for her inability to come up with colors everyone could be comfortable with in time or in a way that would have avoided additional charges.

On his initial visit, Ed walked around with us (maybe 30 minutes) then stayed on site til he tendered the proposal, which was the most timely and most detailed we received. We needed some carpentry done and Ed referred us to a craftsman who came and fixed a dozen problems, most caused by rot. Ed also coached us on paint selection issues. When the carpenter had finished his work and we'd selected the stains, we let Ed know. Ed scheduled us in two weeks. On the first day, foreman checked on the household timing, are weekends OK, standards, staging area. They never violated one of our preferences. The team worked well and fast. Days ended with cleanup and return of material to a staging area. Both Ed and the foreman sought feedback every day. The work was largely complete in less than two weeks. We put together a punch list of things that needed fixing, they embraced it, and cranked through it. All work was complete to our satisfaction in a little more than 3 weeks from start.
Description of Work: Painted exterior of 4000 sq. ft. home that had not been painted for at least 10 years. Included siding, trim, and 3 large decks, and trim and siding on 3 out buildings. There was a bad mildew problem and old paint was cracked and pealing in many places. The crew washed down the deck and siding with bleach and other fungicide, scraped, powerwashed, and rotary sanded surfaces as appropriate. After allowing for drying time, the crew spot primed exposed surfaces. In general there was one coat of stain on siding, trim and deck.

Overall, the project went very well. The decks hadn't been touched in several years (we bought the house last year) so they were in need of some attention. We had an issue with the coverage of the product used to stain the decks that was primarily caused by the fact that portions of the decks were exposed to lots of direct sun and portions were exposed to almost no direct sun. As such, the rate of absorption varied significantly across the decks and there were some areas that wound up being a bit "shinier" than we would have hoped. The owner was very conscientious and shared our concern regarding the outcome of the project. We are very happy with the work that was done and have recommended them to several friends. I would use them again for deck maintenance and painting.

Come May 2007, he set up a date to clean the house exterior and start the painting, and stuck to the schedule to the extent possible (based on weather). Once he started painting, we had several changes and requests, all of which were promptly addressed, and the final amounts adjusted very fairly based on area and cost. Unlike the average "professional", with a this-is-not-my-house-and-I-don't-care work ethic and attitude, we found Ed to be knowledgeable and through, paid significant attention to detail, and communicated very effectively. The painters he sent were quite thorough and respectful of our property. While it was a little difficult to communicate with them, we could always call Ed, and he would attend to our request or concern immediately. Ed also visited the site regularly (once or twice a day) to ensure things were progressing well. All in all, this is one of the few instances where we haven't regretted hiring and paying a professional to do the job.
Description of Work: Prepared and painted the exterior of our 4 bedroom colonial house. He gave us an estimate and we signed the contract during Sept 2006. The job had many exceptions and special conditions: we didn't want the doors or windows painted, a new porch was partially installed and was not to be painted, we wanted him to start painting at a specific time period (mid-May 2007), and we wanted some exposed new siding to be primed before winter 2006. When Ed came over to give us an estimate, he spent a significant amount of time measuring and calculating the estimate. He also spent quite a bit of time helping us narrow down the color choice.

Ed came by to give an estimate unexpectedly due to a miscommunication with my husband. He was visibly displeased that I was not expecting him, but prepared a careful, detailed estimate. His crew of 1-3 guys (we were told there would be 2-3) scraped, sanded and painted our house. The finished product is satisfactory--there were a few spots I thought could have been prepped better. The biggest complaint is on his crew's attention to detail and cleanup--they had to come back 3 times to finish touchups and cleanup. They had left paint drips, bleached a spot on our porch rug, not painted shutter screws, etc. In the end, Ed asked me to inspect their work before they left for the last time. I would have preferred not to babysit his workers and would have liked that he checked his job site to ensure that the work was up to his standards before calling a job finished. Ed was not always a pleasure to deal with but did want us to be satisfied with his services.
