Maltby sent someone out one day after I called looking for an estimate. Chris was polite and informative. He listened to the work I wanted done and then explained what they would do. He gave me his card with a direct contact number and said I would get an estimate emailed to me within two days. The estimate came within two days and was significantly lower than other quotes that I received. I had some further questions about the work and was able to email Chris and get answers right away. Chris also called me on a friday and said he could offer a further discount if I was available to have the work down on the upcoming tuesday because they would be in the area. We jumped at the extra deal! The crew arrived right on time at 8am on tuesday. They were efficient with their work and respectful of our property. The work was completed and cleaned up by 1pm. A separate crew came 6 days later to grind down the stumps. We were so pleased with the work that they did! The guys removed the 5 stumps from the trees taken down as well as any large roots that were sticking up from the ground. The guys also removed a 6th smaller stump that was on our property as well as 3 rhododendron stumps that we were planning on taking out ourselves. It was so nice to come home and see them removed! Less work for us. We would definitely hire Maltby and Company again!
Description of Work: Cut down and removal of 3 oak trees and 2 pine trees average height of 40-50 feet. All stumps ground down below grade level.

Very professional. Will use Maltby for future tree maintenance work and considering for other landscaping work too. Using an Angie's List promo, we hired Maltby & Co to consult and ultimately remove 2 mature (very tall) cottonwoods and prune the remaining 3 cottonwoods along one of our property lines. Our initial email went unanswered, but each time I called, my call was answered promptly. After we were put in touch with a specific arborist, email communications worked great. The arborist we worked with, Marc Hansen, clearly demonstrated his knowledge and expertise. During his consultation visit, not only did he assess the health of the trees we were looking to deal with, fully discussing our thoughts and concerns as well as his recommendations about how to deal with the trees in our urban neighborhood, but he also spent some time to walk around our property and give us advice and tips on our other trees, evergreens, planned landscaping and some of the wild elements along the fenced borders with our neighbors' properties. The day of the tree removal, the arborist team arrived early. Marc and other team members happily spoke with the concerned neighbors who came over (we gave all of the neighbors advanced warning), but thankfully did not give in to some neighbors asking for extreme pruning of the remaining trees- the team politely explained the need to maintain the tree's health and thus safety. Safety was apparently a top priority for the team too- it was amazing to watch them take down the 2 large trees and prune the remaining 3 without any large limbs crashing down, zero damage to the yard, driveway, house or nearby buildings. When they were finished, they left the driveway and yard virtually spotless as if nothing major had happened at all! A few days later, they came back to grind the stumps- again, no mess other than the expected heaps of stump mulch. We had lower bids for the work, but the professional, safe, courteous work they did was well worth it.
Description of Work: Consultation on tree health, maintenance and possible removal. Ultimately decided to remove 2 mature (very tall) cottonwoods and prune the remaining 3 cottonwoods along one of our property lines. Stump grinding for 2 trees that were removed.

I had a 30-35 foot pine tree approximately 2 feet from my house and was concerned about animals getting on to my roof or possible damage to my foundation. I would have taken it down myself, but if it fell the wrong way a very expensive backyard deck would be damaged. Angie's list had a coupon for $300 worth of tree services for $140, and I thought this might be a perfect situation to have the tree removed and get a quotation for two enormous trees that were encroaching onto a backyard porch. I had no idea how much the removal of two 60-70 foot oak trees would cost. They came promptly (within a day or so) and presented me with two quotes, one for the pine alone , and the other for the pine and the two trees. All three trees were approximately $2000., which I thought was extremely reasonable, and in line with what a co-worker had paid. These were huge trees. During our conversation I learned that much of their cost was in transporting their equipment, and it is cost effective to do as much as possible. I took another look at my backyard, and saw other trees that could stand removal, so I asked them to quote me on 6 more trees. Again, within a day or so I had another quote for all 9 trees at $4000, including grinding the stumps. I thought very reasonable considering the location, and amount of work, so I said "go for it". Within ten days the trees were removed. It was done in one day (they came back the next to grind the stumps). No one was injured (to my knowledge). A one year old roof (including 5 skylights), a five year old deck, and a shed were untouched and undamaged. My drive way was cleaner when they left than when they arrived. I no longer dread the leaves of November. Mold had been a big problem since there was no sun. I have a new back yard. I am extraordinarily pleased with the work of Maltby and Co., If I ever need landscaping or tree services again they are on speed dial. One last thing, I've never met or spoken to any of the individuals involved. All communication was done via the internet while I was at work. I was not present when they did the work. Communication was great, they were prompt, they delivered on what they promised, cost was fair and reasonable. Can't ask for more.
Description of Work: 9 trees were removed from my back yard ranging from sizes 3 times the height of my home to mid to low size. All stumps were ground down and included in price.

I have removed a lot of trees from my property. Most were large (100'-plus) oaks with significant rot, that posed a threat to buildings and people. I've done a lot of the felling myself, and some with the assistance of professionals. For the really big work, a crane was the only answer. I first hired Maltby about a decade ago, and was so pleased with their work that I promised to call them when the time came again. This past March, I had four huge oaks and a number of pretty big conifers removed, and Maltby got the job again. The crew (some of the same people, in fact) again did a truly excellent job. They were extraordinarily painstaking in positioning the enormous truck among my many plantings, and did no harm at all. Likewise when dropping even the largest limbs and trunks, they were careful to cut shapes and sizes, then lower to ground positions, that touched nothing of value. I was very impressed with their efficiency and neatness in spite of the unseasonably hot day. They were kind enough to pull out, at no extra charge, a couple of smaller (but still pretty big - like 12" diameter) that they were able to reach from the same base positions. They ground everything up to about a foot in diameter, and left me a neat pile of chips for landscaping use and a mountain of top-quality firewood. I will certainly hire them again if opportunity presents. If you work with Maltby, I highly recommend staying home for the event - not because they require any supervision (they don't), but for the pleasure of watching the ballet of huge trunks and crowns gliding through the air, and the precision of their roping and placement. Nice people, too!

The initial phone call was returned the same day and we set a mutually convenient time on the following day for the estimate. The proposal was emailed two days later. We were quite pleased with the quotes, as we have used two other local companies in the past who were quite expensive. I also had purchased an Angie's List coupon which gave us a further discount of $160. The work was completed within two weeks and has dramatically improved the overall appearance of the yard. John who completed the proposal returned any emails or phone calls within the same day. Bill, the owner was very professional and quite knowledgeable about all of the various species of trees on our property., which had not been my experience with past companies.
Description of Work: We had a large limb removed from a Norway Maple in back yard. On the side off the house, two oak trees were removed and the line of trees hanging over roof were pruned back quite nicely. We also had a large Spruce tree and three small hemlocks removed.

The company was responsive to our call and visited the site for a preliminary review of the work requested. This was followed by a written price and date when the work could be performed. They arrived on time and performed the job exactly as specified.
Description of Work: They came with a crane and chipper to remove a tree that had died from Dutch Elm disease and a dead pine next to it. They also cleared branches over our garage and did maintenance trim of a maple overlooking our deck. The team of 4 were on site 4 hours and were both efficient and professional. We were especially pleased with the clean-up after the job - there was no sign of debris. I highly recommend the company and would use them again.

From the initial phone call to the last sweeping of the debris from the sidewalk, the process went beautifully.
Description of Work: I have a large beautiful oak tree. They pruned the tree in a most efficient, responsible and artistic manner. they were very respectful of my neighbors and were the picture of courtesy and professionalism. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. With so many crooked people out there, it was an absolute pleasure to do business with these fine men. Megan H., Roslindale, MA

The gentlemen who showed up was an older guy who claimed he owned the company. I asked for an estimate to get an old dieing tree removed to prevent it from falling on its own and taking something out on the way down. I do all my own yard work, and really just wanted the tree taken down and I would handle the disposal. Well he showed up, and my wife greeted him, as I was running a few minutes late. Apparently he didn't like dealing with intelligent women so he told her that I didn't really want the tree left in place, I really wanted it disposed of and the stump grinded. So when I showed up and corrected his assumption, he gave me a verbal price over the price that he worked out and told my wife which included removal and stump grinding. Needless to say that both of his prices were between 30-40% hiher than the other three companies I got quotes from, and they were all able to follow directions. And as I thought, the fire wood I cut from the felled tree almost paid for the service to fell it.

Response from Maltby & Co Inc
We at Maltby & Co., Inc. are truly sorry for this obvious miscommunication. Mr. Maltby, one of three brothers that own the company, was the salesman and was concerned about the safety of the customer dealing with this hung-up tree and quoted more work than was requested. Perhaps, in this case, Mr. Maltby underestimated the customer's ablility to deal with the cutting and disposal of the tree in question. The safety of our customers, our workers and the preservation of our customers' properties is our priority at all times.

I called them about two weeks after hurricane irene and requested an estimate for the removal of the hemlock. mr. maltby said that if I could wait until it got colder it would be cheaper (they were very busy removing trees from the hurricane). I called around thanksgiving I think, and he came and looked at the tree and gave me a price approx 900.00 over voicemail. I procrastinated and finally started calling them to come and take the tree in early February. This time he sent me a quote that was $220 cheaper than the original verbal quote. He told me that they'd come and take the tree in several days - the following week (vacation week), the tree was removed. There was a lot of back and forth but the quality of the work was definitely worth it.

Finally, the third time I had a secretary on the phone and she said someone would come to my home. When the owner came by, I wasn't home but he left a business card in my door. I tried to contact him by his card and he never called me back. I came home from work again and had another business card with some information on what different options I could have and what they would entail. I tried to contact him again and he didn't answer. He never called me back to schedule an appointment. I ended up finding another tree service.

We were satisfied with the work, and I believe our neighbor was as well. Maltby was flexible in dealing with a situation in which two neighbors would be paying for portions of the work that involved two properties. An overall positive experience, from estimator Chris Bugby's initial visit and discussion of our situation through the day the actual work was done.
Description of Work: Pruning one tree on the boundary of our property and our neighbor's, pruning a tree on our neighbor's property, and pruning another one of our trees. The boundary tree was overhanging our neighbor's roof and, to a lesser extent, ours, and required fairly immediate attention. The two other trees just were due or overdue for some general pruning.

They did a great job, but I had to wait for 6 weeks to get them here. They gave me a great price by the time I signed a contract with them. The tree service guy told me that he would be out within 7 to 10 days, which was fine with me since I was not in a hurry. They were very professional. They are a very well respected company. I also had them do my neighbor?s tree and they were very expensive for that one tree. I found them online and I read the feedback that they had received. They were spot on as per what everybody else had mentioned online. They were very good once they showed up, but getting them out was a tough thing. I spoke to the owner of the company and I told him about the delay. So he said that he understood the problem and also told me that he got a lot of complaints about that. I told him that they should have fixed that problem since they have been in business for a long time. I also told him to have more communication with the customers. I knew they were busy, but it was ridiculous to wait for 6 weeks. I had 3 companies who had told me that they could do it the next day. They didn?t even give me a date. I would recommend them for their service and I would get a date for the service to be performed. The quality of their work was excellent. They were very professional once they were here. They finished the job and I was happy with it. My only problem was to get them here. I would use their services in the future too.

They arrived on time, walked through the work with me before beginning, a crew of three worked professionally and quickly, answered all my quesitons, did all the work I expected, and cleaned up every scrap of tree and shrub debris - couldn't ask for more. Will definitely use them again. The work they preformed on two other jobs at my home were equally well done, and the results of an excellent pruning are evident over a year later in terms of seeing trees and shrubs healtier and better shaped. I note other reviewers have commented on their price - I have found them fairly priced, less than several other services in the area, but of equal high quality. Tree work is never inexpensive, but I know healthy trees and shrubs add great value to any home.
Description of Work: Today, removed dead tree, pruned a severely overgrown dogwood near home, removed ivy from house and wall, pruned large shrubs. I have used Maltby Tree on two other occasions for tree pruning and preservation of a florida dogwood, plus reshaping leggy rhodedendrons.

Had a big maple tree overgrowing the house that had to be cut back, plus a dead pear tree that had to be removed. I called several tree services on a Friday and left a voicemail with a clear description of the problem, my address and an open invitation to drive by if they wanted to look at the problem, and requesting a quote and/or recommendations. Bob Maltby's response was the best by far: he simply drove out to my house the next afternoon and called me from the yard. I happened to be home, so I came out to meet him. In about 3 minutes, he showed me what he thought should be done, gave me his card and offered to do it the next week for $200. I said sure, and I came home from work that day to find that, sure enough, the offending trees were gone, everything was left neat and professional, and I got a bill for $200 in the mail a few days later. Every other tree service seemed to want to schedule an appointment to meet with me (usually on a weekday), instead of simply driving by the place to tell me how much it would cost to cut it back. If I had been calling for open-ended help with landscaping or sick trees that I wanted to save or some such, I would understand that, but I really just wanted a quote to cut back overhanging limbs and remove a dead tree, which is a process that I don't have any insight on, so I don't really have anything to add to a consultation on the best approach. If what you want is quick and responsive tree service of this sort, I would definitely recommend Maltby. I cannot speak to their landscaping etc, but their overall professionalism is first-class.

The crew was very professional and got everything completed in a single day. Given the size and location of the trees, the crew had to work in the street; however, they were able to complete all of their work while keeping the street open to traffic. The company is very busy and it can take a few weeks to schedule. Additionally, it took approximately 2.5 weeks before we were able to get the stumps ground.

Everything went as planned. No damage done to our lawn in the back yard because they took precautions before driving the truck into the yard. I was at work and when I arrived home the work had been completed and there was no evidence that any vehicle had been in the yard.
Description of Work: The work involved cutting two trees in the neighbor's yard up against our fence, and removing a dead branch which was hanging down and probably would have destroyed something in our garden during next winter or during a summer storm. Maltby came into our back yard and did the pruning from a bucket truck. No damage to our shrubs and plants which extended about 8 - 10 feet from the fence. We have used Maltby a few times. They have always done a superb job. We once called another tree company in the area and found out that they subbed out the work to Maltby. Might as well have the work done by the best and most capable people in the first place.
