The job was handled professionally and courteously from start to finish. John M. the estimator was great. The crew was professional and courteous. I received a few estimates and the price was very reasonable for the amount of work they did. I would highly recommend them and plan on using them again.
Description of Work: Maltby removed several large dead (and not dead) trees from my yard. They also removed some smaller trees and some large pieces from a tree that fell several years ago. They came back a week later and ground up several stumps.

Ultimately I did not have work performed by this company but feel compelled to write a review based on a very positive and professional experience. I made an online request for a quote - I needed the roots of some shrubs removed from the perimeter of my property. Chris called me within 24 hours of my online request and left a very professional message on my voicemail. I returned his call later that evening but did not reach him and left a return voicemail. Chris called me back the following morning and left another voicemail. I was unable to return his phone call that day, but he took the initiative to come by my home, inspect the requested work and email me an estimate without ever actually speaking with me and the price was extremely reasonable. This is exceptional, proactive customer service and I would recommend Maltby & Co.

In the beginning our interactions went really well. We met onsite and discussed the work that needed to be done. The work required a crane, so detailed planning was necessary. I hired Maltby & Co to Remove a large dead pine tree, Prune a full grown tree, and Replant some trees that were planted too deeply by the former owner. (Their rootflares were buried about 6-10"). During the work things seemed to be going fine, although I was not present to oversee their work for most of time. When I returned after the work was finished, I found that some of the replanted trees were replanted almost at the original depth, with the rootflares still buried. This was pretty upsetting since that was the whole reason we had them replant them. We ended up scraping the soil away to expose it better. When the irrigation turned on I found that in at least 3 locations they had cut the irrigation line completely and left it open. Water was just spraying out and pooling up. I called and said that they needed to come patch these cuts. Someone came by and claimed to have fixed the cuts. Water continued to pool up in those areas. I was away and didnt notice this for about a week. When I returned I called my irrigation guy to ask him to investigate. The 'repairs' Maltby had made were not repairs at all. Maltby had cut ANOTHER line and t-d the one end of the cut pipe into that, leaving the other end to continue pooring water into the soil. THEN they changed the wiring (who knows why) and set it up so that zone was running EVERY time each of the other 8 lines were turned on. One of the trees Maltby had replanted was now dead, and another was on it's way out. My irrigation specialist fixed everything, at considerable expense to me, and I had to replace the dying tree. It took a month for the anaerobic, stinky soil to dry out enough to stop harming the trees. I notified Maltby of the issues and heard nothing.

We are so sorry to read that you were unhappy with our services. It really sounds like we disappointed you and I hope you can accept our apology. Please know we always try our best to meet or exceed our customer’s expectations but on your project it certainly sounds like we failed. We would like to invite you to contact Lauren Damplo in our office (781-344-3900) to discuss the situation further and to see if we can somehow redress the situation.

I would definitely not be using Maltby
Description of Work: I called Maltby tree service to have some one to come out and give me an estimate on tree and shrub removal and or pruning. The first day I called the rep took my information and told me some one would get back to me later in the day. Well no one called so I called again the next day and explained to the rep that no had called me she verified my previous call and said that she passed my info to Bob the morning if my second call. She said Bob was in a meeting and would be calling me that day. Well here it is 4-5 days later and I still haven't received a call.

There was no nonsense to them. They showed up and went right to work. Since they were up in the air in a lift truck they said if they saw anything else they would knock that down for me too. They threw in a few extra freebies once they could get up to a high enough level where they could see any additional damage. They cleaned up very well after themselves.

Maltby and Company used a cherry picker to prune a magnolia tree in front of our house back from the roof, street, and neighbor's yard. They also hand pruned a large number of flowering shrubs back from the sides of our house and removed some saplings from our backyard. | |From our initial phone contact to the completion of the job, Maltby and Company was professional and responsive. The written estimate was detailed and sent in a timely manner. John was very clear about how things would look after pruning, so there were no surprises. He was very knowledgeable about the species of our trees and plants, and offered helpful hints for the spring. John also walked the crew through the jobs listed on the estimate to ensure what we agreed upon was completed. The crew worked quickly and efficiently and cleaned up all debris. We are very satisfied with our experience with Maltby and Company.

Maltby was fantastic. They sent someone out to assess the job and after seeing what terrible shape we were in (there were several trees across our driveway and two on our garage blocking our cars from being able to get out, as well as a ridiculous amount of debris), they put us to the front of the list and started bright and early the very next morning. I know they are a busy company so we were VERY appreciate of their attention to us!!! It took them about 2 and a half days to remove all of the trees and we thought that they did a great job. Not only did they remove the trees, but they cleared the debris off our our roof for us and cleared as much out of the snow as they could They even came back after the snow had melted to clean the remaining debris from our yard and cleared areas that they had not even been working in! The employees of Maltby were extremely professional and very nice. They had to bring in quite a large crane for much of the work and did their very best not to hurt our yard and we really appreciated that as well. They even took down a couple of additional trees for us free of charge that we were concerned about before they left. Overall we couldn't have been happier with the work that they did for us and we recommend them to others looking to have tree work done in their yards.
Description of Work: After blizzard Nemo, we hired Maltby to clear approximately 30 trees from our yard that had fallen or were "threatening" to fall. Along with the trees, there was an immense amount of branches and debris that they also cleared for us.

Bob and his son are great to do business with. He is a knowledgeable arborist. He brought all the necessary materials and cleaned up well after himself. He is pretty honest and they do a really good job. Their prices are not the cheapest. I also saw one of my oak trees was rotting and I brought it to their attention. He was able to educate me on the trees and tell me how to take care of them.

It was not that great. It was a little tough setting up the appointment, originally. Finally, the owner came out and took a look at the property along with the trees that I wanted to remove. Once he got there, he was nice. He did the walk-through. He gave me a quote which seemed pretty reasonable. We set up to get the trees removed. I set up an appointment which was three weeks out. It's a little later than I wanted. When the crew came out there with the crane, the crew leader said that there's no way they could set the crane up on our driveway. The trees weren't removed. The owner said he would call me back to set-up another date. I'm trying a different company, I think. They said they're going to have a bigger crane and that would cost more money too. They were going to charge me $3750.

they were hard workers, detail-oriented and exceptionally easy to get along with. I even have a small birds' nest for my mantle now, because when I demanded that the guy put it right back up in the yew he was working on, he calmly and cheerfully identified the species who made it, the migratory pattern of the bird, the material the bird used, and the fact that this nest was not made for "return use". so-- you want these folks if you worry about such things, as I do. clearly they were over-qualified for this kind of job, but my husband and I had bid on a credit for their services in a charity auction prior to knowing what scope of work we could offer them. these are actually the guys who take in and pull out the giant Christmas trees sent to Boston each year by the citizens of Nova Scotia in gratitude for the aid our state responded with when their harbor wharf and port city sustained a truly horrific fire years ago. my point is: my yard is not the best indication of this company's potential in tree service, but it's the only job I have to describe their work.
Description of Work: they picked up, delivered and installed trees and shrubs to my property as well as grinding out tree stumps that a previous arborist claimed were too tricky to remove, hard pruning a grove of overgrown Yew, establishing a central leader on a young tree so that it would grow better at the site I had planned for it.

I needed fast service, especially since my neighbor has three children under 10 years of age, and I was concerned that this hanging branch might harm then in some way. The supervisor/owner? arrived at my property within an hour of calling their office. The workers arrived early the next day and were totally professional, almost military in their demeanor. They began work within a few minutes of arriving, obviously they had been well briefed as to the job by their supervisor beforehand. Yes, one of the workers smoked a few cigarettes, big deal! He never smoked anywhere near the chainsaws or any other power equipment. He also had the energy to easily lift several pieces of wood that must have weighed over one hundred pounds . So I guess his smoking didn't affect his strength or health very much! Their 'rolling stock' (trucks) looked clean and well maintained, almost brand new. The wood-chipper they used looked well used but obviously was well maintained as well. Everything went smooth as glass, nobody was rushed, or had an attitude, and they did a wonderful job of cleaning up after the job. Not one speck of sawdust remains (maybe just a speck, here and there.)
Description of Work: Took out hanging branch that was threatening to crush my steel shed and my neighbors fence, plus some nearby dead branches. Also removed a pile of old firewood that was left by a previous (unsatisfactory) contractor.

These guys are the worst: they show no hesitation in dumping branch, twig, & sawdust debris in someone else?s yard while cutting down trees in their client?s yard. They also believe they have the right to invade neighboring yards with their cherry pickers (bucket trucks) while cutting down trees, without permission. On April 25th and 26th Maltby and Company did both. As they were cutting down trees in my neighbor?s yard, they littered my yard with tree debris and invaded the space above my yard with the buckets on their bucket trucks. It got so bad that I started recording their actions to keep them and their debris out of my yard. At least one Maltby and Company employee started making taunting & intimidating gestures while I recorded him. Imagine a company that trains its employees to taunt neighbors concerned about their privacy rights. Maltby and Company?s employees also smoked cigarettes on the job while in the proximity of gas-powered chainsaws and tree shredding equipment (also caught on tape). More than anything it?s the attitude of the employees and Maltby and Company that is egregious. They not only litter and invade neighboring yards, they act as if they had the right to do so. When I wrote a letter to the owner of the company asking for an apology, I instead received sarcastic condescension. It would have cost Bob Maltby of Maltby & Company absolutely nothing to simply apologize. He chose not to. Hire these people and you will be dealing with aggressive jerks who will be in your face with their mean-spirited antics if you dare complain about anything, who will litter your neighbor?s yards with tree debris, and who will litter your yard with their own cigarette butts. Avoid at all costs. ?[Cigarette butts] ... present a threat to wildlife. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food ... Composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic, cigarette butts can persist in the environment as long as other forms of plastic." --Clean Virginia Waterways ?The biggest myth is that cigarette filters are biodegradable. In fact, cigarette butts are not biodegradable.... The acetate (plastic) filters can take many years to decompose.? 8/28/13 Response to Maltby & Co.'s response: 1. Maltby?s insinuation that they contacted me or tried to contact me before or after cutting down my neighbor?s trees is false. At no point before, during or after Maltby worked on my neighbor?s yard did anyone from Maltby ring my doorbell, knock on my door, leave a note on my door, phone me, or contact me in anyway (I was home at the time). Only after I sent a letter of complaint to Maltby days after the job was completed did Maltby send me a condescending, insincere letter offering to clean up. I wouldn?t have received any communication from Maltby at all if I hadn?t sent a letter. 2. In my complaint letter to Maltby I didn?t demand payment for any damages. My letter stated: ?All I want is a letter of apology from you and a letter of apology from your crew.? If Maltby had offered a simple apology, as I had asked, my review never would have made onto Angie?s List. A normal business owner would offer a simple apology even if he felt the client were wrong, because an apology costs absolutely nothing. Maltby refused, and went out of their way to pick a fight. 3. Since my review, another Angie?s List reviewer has corroborated my observation that Maltby employees smoke on the job around GAS-POWERED machinery, littering client property with their cigarette butts (you didn?t think they carefully placed each cigarette butt in a little plastic bag which they then disposed of properly, did you?). Does anyone else out there think it?s a good idea to smoke around gas-powered chain saws? 4. To summarize: Maltby invaded my yard space, told me I had to move when I was inside my own yard, littered my yard with a neighbor?s tree debris, made lewd gestures to me as I was recording them, made no offer to clean up before or after (until I sent a complaint letter, and then responded condescendingly), refused to apologize, and lied about bending over backwards to make things right. Things may go OK if you hire Maltby, but heaven help you if they don?t because Maltby?s sense-of-entitlement and arrogance are nothing short of breathtaking. 5. Check out my other reviews on Angie?s List. They?re mostly favorable. I don?t make a habit of attacking hard-working, small-business owners. In this case I was clearly provoked.

Response from Maltby & Co Inc
Most importantly, our company is most concerned with the quality of work and the safety of our employees. Maltby & Co., Inc. is a TCIA accredited company with a proven history of providing quality, safe tree work since 1949. We are proud to put the safety of our employees and customers’ properties first while practicing the highest standards and best techniques our industry has to offer. In order to respond to [removed member name]'s review we are taking direct quotes from a letter we received from him. We would upload a copy of this letter but are unable to do so on this site. [removed member name] concluded this letter threatening that if each of the owners from our company and every crew member on the project did not send him a letter of apology then he will “take [Maltby & Co., Inc.] to Small Claims Court for the cost of the cleanup to [his] yard, file a complaint against [us] with the Better Business Bureau, write a negative review of [Maltby & Co., Inc.] on Angie’s List…” Well, clearly he has followed through on at least one of his threats. The two complaints [removed member name] listed in his letter to us were 1. “Invading [his] yard space when cutting down [his neighbor’s] trees” and 2. “litter [his] yard with twig, branch and sawdust debris while cutting down [his neighbor’s] tree”. In his review of us on Angie’s List, [removed member name] accuses our employees First, in order to safely remove [removed member name]’s neighbor’s tree, it was necessary for our certified arborist and crew to access part of that tree by hovering over the property line. It is our understanding that the air and space above land and property cannot be owned or claimed. For this reason, we did not include an apology for “invading the space above [[removed member name]] yard” in our letter to him. To address [removed member name]’s second complaint, by his own admittance “[Our] employees did not dump a lot of debris on [his] yard…” Our crew was aware that some debris landed on [removed member name]’s yard and when our foreman asked if we could clean up our mess; [removed member name] refused to allow us on his property. In our letter responding to [removed member name], we again, offered to return to his property, to clean up any debris that may be present. Unfortunately, our offer was received as “sarcastic condescension”. Our attempts to remedy the situation have been refused.
