I ended up saving a lot in labor costs but it probably took me longer to do. So, I do not know what kind of work O'Hara Construction does, but a retirn phone call would have been appropriate I think.
Description of Work: Wanted to install a pocket door in a small bedroom. This entailed the removal of existing drywall and studs from wall without disturbing adjacent closet in next room. I called O'hara Construction too get an estimate for this work. I got his voice mail and left a message giving a description of the work requested. Mr. O'Hara never returned my call. I ended up doing the research and the work myself.

Found contractor on Angies List in late August 2010, left a few messages trying to set up a meeting. Contractor was initially difficult to reach (calls not returned) but when we did hook up to review the job, I was left with a positive impression due to his detailed knowledge of what would be involved in the job. Said he had a couple of jobs to finish before he could get to mine. Had one call shortly after that confirmed he was still involved in these jobs, but did eventually forward quote. Had a very difficult time reaching contractor for next several weeks, several calls and emails of mine went unanswered until early October when we finally spoke again. I asked him to forward contract. I had a concern due to the payment structure (ie upfront deposit, milestones, etc), and discussed it with him over the phone. Stated he could not alter the payment structure, but would forward references for me to contact. Two days later contractor not only did not forward references, but instead emailed to turn down job, I assume based on what I thought was a legitimate concern over the payment structure. In summary, I'm sorry this did not work out. When we met to discuss, contractor arrived within 15 minutes of scheduled time, and seemed to be a professional who knew the details of the job. And for what its worth, contractor just generally seemed like a nice guy, and I was looking forward to working with him. I actually delayed the job significantly because I believed I found the right contractor for the job. Unfortunately due to the unresponsiveness, and ultimately emailing me stating his decision to turn down the job due to what I thought was a reasonable concern, I cannot recommend this contractor.
Description of Work: Job was to have been a complete bathroom tear out and remodel. Quote was around $10K plus fixtures. Job did not work out as detailed below.

I gave this member an estimate to which he agreed the price never changed. At the bottom of every estimate I send out it states that all work is subject to written contract along with an initial payment of thirtyfive percent of contract total before work begins the remainder in stages as work progresses. This members project was due to begin on a monday but the saturday before still no signed contract even though it had been forwarded to him well in advance. I had electricians, plumbers, plasters, tilers and my self the carpenter all ready to go as well as a dumpster scheduled to be delivered onsite that monday.I had to cancel them all putting myself out of work for two weeks also.He had agreed previously to the price and three stages of payment the initial thirtyfive percent another thirtyfive percent when all rough city inspections were done midway and the final when work was finished. Now the member did not want to give the first patment and questioned the price which I can state was very reasonable. This made me very nervous. I felt afraid of his intentions and so withdrew. Home owners are not the only one's who have to protect themselves from being taken advantage of and I felt unsafe with this member. If I were such an unreliable contractor ask your self how have i maintained an "A" grade on angies list over several years as well as being awarded page of happiness nominations and a super service award.

I think he's a very, very honest person. I'm sure that he does really good work. It's just that he's so tied up and busy that he couldn't start work for a while. I decided to go with somebody else that could do the work quicker. I would've been very happy with him, too. He's a terrific person.

First off I have to say that we highly recommend O?Hara Construction. We initially met Adrian in 2008 when we were working to remodel a bathroom, and unfortunately he was unavailable at the time (we should have waited!). We were impressed with him and his ideas at that meeting and thought of him again when we decided to reconfigure our apartment. The scope of the project included moving an interior wall that enclosed an abandoned chimney stack in our 3rd floor apartment of a building that dates to 1900, replacing the flooring where the wall/closet/chimney were, and making other necessary improvements. All in all, the interior of our apartment was in rough shape as the previous owner who converted it cut a lot of corners that had deteriorate over the five years that we had lived there. We worked with Adrian from on a semi-long distance basis and the job could not have gone any better or more smoothly. The work came out even better than we could have anticipated and it was truly a pleasure to work with Adrian throughout the project. The new layout of the apartment is exactly what we envisioned. The cost of the job was right on target with the original contract and Adrian kept us well informed through the process, even updating us with pictures throughout. Any questions or concerns raised were addressed very quickly and professionally. We were very impressed with the ability to keep intact the historical elements of the home, reusing existing doors and mouldings. The replaced sections of floor are indiscernible from the existing portions. The attention to detail went above and beyond what we could have anticipated. Additionally, as it is commonly the case with multi-dwelling properties, Adrian was able to work with us in managing changing ?requirements? of our condo association and neighbors, which made this part of the process much easier than it could have been. In summary, Adrian does exceptional work, provides an impressively high level of customer service, and is truly a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend him and could not be happier with his work.
Description of Work: Reconfigured the layout of an apartment including: -Removal of a wall and enclosed chimney stack -Framing of new wall and doorway -Installation of a skylight -Enlargement and framing of utility room/closet -Replacement of hardwood flooring to match existing -Replacement of ceilings -Replacement of baseboard heaters.

Adrian was a pleasure to work with and did a fantastic job! He made what could have been a very stressful situation (the loss of my only bathroom) much more manageable with his pleasant demeanor and professionalism. He was onsite every day, easy to reach, and returned calls quickly. He took the time to explain the overall process, walk through specific pieces of the work that had been done, and answer questions. He asked for my input every step of the way when decisions on aesthetics needed to be made, and was extremely responsive to any changes I asked for (for example, he moved the medicine cabinet higher even though it had already been framed in and he had to re-frame it). I was very comfortable having him in my home, and had no concerns about leaving him there while I went off to work. By the end of the project I had built up a trust level where I just knew that whatever came up he would take care of it and handle it well. He also cleaned up every day (sometimes better than me). Adrian obviously takes great pride in his work, and rightly so. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to friends and family, or hire him again.

He installed our kitchen cabinets, making them level in an old house where nothing is level. He did this in a timely manner, was friendly, and the kitchen looks beautiful! Along the way he was willing to do extra things we needed like redoing the stairs on our back porch and replacing some outside doors that were weird sizes. He installed wood trim and replaced old trim that we had refinished. It looks fantastic. He took care in his work and to protect our house. He was always in a good mood, easy to deal with, and he charged what he said he would. We would definitely use him again and recommend him.

The only way I could replace a rusting oil tank in my old house was to have a hole cut into a floor, as the door to the cellar was too small to fit a new tank, and could not be welded in place as the previous one had been. The oil company would also no longer deliver oil as the tank was rusted, so there was some urgency in getting this done. Adrian was able to fit me in around his and another client's Thanksgiving plans. He was professionable and personnable, and a pleasure to have around. Considering the craftsmanship and pride in his work he put into that trap door, I can only imagine the skilled work he must do on more refined and extensive projects. He also shored up some sagging cellar beams (another project for the spring) without additional cost, and gave me good advise as to how to proceed with that problem. I also appreciated that he wasn't dismissive of the project, which while a little different (or even bizarre), was very essential.

This was the second project he did for us. We were very pleased with all the work Adrian has done on our condo. In spite of all the various rules and regulations imposed by the building management company, Adrian did an excellent job under these difficult circumstances and dealt with them with diplomacy and good humor. Since we are out-of-towners, we could only meet with him on weekends and Adrian was gracious enough to meet with us on weekends to review the progress of the work done and he even accompanied us to the vendors for kitchen cabinets and granite countertop. His honesty and cheerful disposition made this project go smoothly. We would readily recommend Adrian for home remodeling jobs.
Description of Work: --- Complete remodeling of the kitchen, including installing new cabinetry, granite countertop, new plumbing, appliances and electrical work. --- Complete remodeling of the bathroom, including the Bathtub and all fixtures, raising ceiling and electrical work. --- Moved the door opening in the wall and remodeled the closets in the bedroom.

When I met Adrian O'Hara, I just got a good feeling, like this is someone I can work with and thankfully I was correct. He is a personable individual who knows how to treat his customers right. I got bids for the work from a few contractors who I found on Angie's list. O'Hara's price was a little higher than others but I liked him and I like to go with my gut feeling. It turns out that Adrian O'Hara gives exceptional customer service, and the old addage you get what you pay for applies. He was thorough and provided excellent value for the price. He was very generous with his knowledge too and gave us plenty of free advice about our remodel project on the third floor apartment, which we really appreciated.
Description of Work: Installed 5 interior and exterior prehung doors, performed rough framing in a remodel of my third floor apartment in my three family property, installed soffit venting, installed venting for the third floor kitchen and bathroom, and replaced a rubber roof on a dormer.

Adrian fit this job into his schedule to accomodate us due to the date of the party. This alone would probably accoundt for most of my rating, but on top of being extremely accomodating and helpful, Adrian did a BEAUTIFUL job on the steps. They are beautifully finished, much nicer than I ever imagined. He used composite wood that will not rot and the design was perfect. He even had to hand- cut pieces of the decking due to the fact that they butted up agains a stone foundation- really top-notch work. I heartily recommend Adrian- He is very pleasant, very thorough, neat, and pays great attention to detail. He also comes when he says he will, and stays in contact throughout the job.
Description of Work: I have used Adrian for a number of jobs in the past, but this time he rebuilt a set of outside steps and porch off of my kitchen. There was alot of rot inthe old steps, and the job was made more difficult bu having uneven ground and cement under the area where the steps are. Also, we called in a bit of a panic becasue we were having a big party and the stairs were deteriorating by the day, we were afraid that someone would fall through them on their way into the party.

I am sorry but this report is at best so petty it does not deserve a response. I judge my work on the work I carry out. Please remember that behind the company name is a person trying to earn a living. I cannot answer every call I will miss one maybe even two on occasion. It speaks to your character that you go to all the trouble of submitting a negative post on a man you have never met or spoke to. I am sorry I committed the apparently unprofessional crime of being busy.

We were very pleased, he was very responsive, did excellent work and had very professional sub-contractors - he brought in an electrician, painter and plaster. When he had scheduling conflicts, he communicated the information beforehand so we knew when and what to expect.
Description of Work: We selected Adrian to build out our unfinished basement because we felt he gave us honest, thorough advice. We initially contacted him because we thought our interior steps needed rebuilding. He came into look at them and told us, while he'd be happy to charge us $5000 to rebuild them, it didn't need to be done. We immediately felt as though we could trust him to give us good advice, without wondering whether it was based on expanding the work list. So when we decided to do the basement work, we immediately contacted him. In addition to building out the basement, he rebuilt our outside steps.

Adrian was very professional, prompt, and responsive. He seemed to be very well versed in renovation and offered a number of suggestions. He was willing to work with us to achieve a renovation within our budget.
Description of Work: Adrian provided an estimate for a bathroom renovation and window replacement.
Based on the estimate and the work plan I was so pleased with the outcome. It exceeded our expectations. For one month Adrian and his staff worked in a stifling attic with a low ceiling/pitch and they never complained. We will definitely recommend Adrian to others and should other projects arise, we will definitely use Adrian.

I contacted Adrian via e-mail and he responded immediately and set an estimate appointment to which he was very prompt. He looked at both bathrooms, took measurements and e-mailed an estimate within 48 hours. Adrian gave us 2 weeks notice as to a start date but we got lucky, our tile was in stock and Adrian was able to begin sooner. Adrian was on time everyday. He called me each afternoon to give me an update of the days work and tomorrows plan. He cleaned up everyday and even padded my hardwood floors for protection. I LOVE my new bathroom. It's like a spa! I expect to use Adrian's services in the future!

I couldn't be happier with the work that Adrian performed. He called in a timely manner and provided an estimate quickly. When starting the job he was very considerate of our house and maintained a clean working environment. When the hole in the house was open, he closed it at night for comfort and security. The wall was taken out and the framing checked and fixed before the sliding door was put in. He was incredibly knowledgeable about houses and was able to work with issues as they came up during the process. Obviously the removal of an exterior wall is a stressful thought, but Adrian worked in a meticulous manner to complete the job in the expected time frame and with excellent quality. I would most definitely hire Adrian to do many other projects in the future. His professionalism, expertise and quality of work surpass those of any contractor I have experienced in the past.
Description of Work: The work consisted of the replacement of a storm door and window that needed some re-framing in the process. Also, an exterior wall of the house was taken out and a large sliding glass door was installed.

After receiving an estimate from Adrian O'Hara back in December 2006 and walking through the project together, our condo association decided to hire him to do work on our front porch. At the time he quoted us 4-6 weeks before he could start ... a target date to begin work for late January 2007. It is now mid-May and our project, sadly, has been continually postponed since that time. On more than one occasion it was US who had to contact Adrian asking what was happening and when he could begin. He has said that he uses subcontractors for various projects and they have delayed his time line again and again. A week here, three days there. I can only imagine that the people who were in line 'behind us' have been bumped as well, or he simply has skipped over us to do other projects. It is increasingly hard to believe that if he's had to wait 5 months for miscellaneous subcontractors that he hasn't had time somewhere in there to either A. Give us a phone-call or B. start our project.
Description of Work: No work performed. We have been bumped and bumped and bumped and bumped since DECEMBER and Adrian has not shown up or called this week (Mid-May) after telling us he would be here on Wednesday. We are now frustrated because we believe we have missed our chance to get in line with other contractors because of the uncommunicative relationship and extraordinary delays that we've encountered with Adrian O'Hara Home Improvement and Construction.

YES I HANDLED THIS PARTICULAR JOB BADLY. I PRICED THIS JOB WAY TOO LOW. EIGHTEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS WOULD NOT COVER THE COSTS. I BEGAN TO REALIZE THAT IF I TOOK IT ON I WOULD MAKE A LOSS. I WAS WORKING ON A HOME IN QUINCY WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1909 THIS TYPE OF HOME PRESENTS CONSTANT SURPRISES ONCE WALLS ARE OPENED. IT POSED AN INCREASED PROJECT FOR THE PLUMBER AND ELECTRICIAN BOTH OF WHO WERE EMPLOYED DIRECTLY BY THE HOMEOWNER. THIS HELD ME UP GREATLY. IN MY BUSINESS TIME EQUALS MONEY AS AT SET PRICE IS THE BOTTOM LINE. I FINISHED THE JOB TO THE OWNER’S SATISFACTION. I COULD NOT UNDER TAKE THE PROJECT IN QUESTION. IF YOU TAKE ON A PROJECT YOU HAVE UNDER PRICED IT WILL END UP A RUSHED AND SUBSTANDARD FINISHED PRODUCT. I WOULD RATHER HAVE A BAD MARK AGAINST MY NAME FOR NOT DOING A JOB THAN A JOB I DID IN A SUBSTANDARD WAY. TO CONCLUDE I HAVE ELEVEN “A” RATED COMMENTS, FIVE “PAGE OF HAPPINESS NOMINEE” COMMENTS ALL WHICH ARE FOR WORK I HAVE PERFORMED

It went very well. Adrian was quick to return my calls, and luckily he was available to start right away. He was prompt, very friendly, and did a very careful job with the installation. It looks great, and he took extra effort to overcome some of the obstacles due to the fact that it's an old house, and things weren't quite squared off. His fee was very reasonable for the work performed. I can highly recommend him for any remodeling work or carpentry work you would have around your house.
Description of Work: Adrian installed a set of pre-hung French doors for us, in an open doorway between our foyer and living room. The doorway had a rounded arch shape, so he first had to square off the top of the opening before installing the doors. He then installed the doors and installed wood molding around the door to finish it off.

Adrianne took out the wall, re-framed and installed windows, did all the baseboard trim, and resized the kitchen chase. The kitchen chase was what caused us our headaches. There was some plumbing that both Adrianne and we missed, so I don't totally blame him. And then it was not quite built to the right size depth wise. But, that may have been my fault, it may not have been. But, it worked out better in the end anyways, because it gave more room in the passage between rooms anyways. Adrianne was always very clean and cleaned up every day. He was absolutely amazing with our son, who was 1.5 - 2 years at the time. My son loved him. He was ALWAYS willing to answer my stupid questions even if it had to do with work that wasn't his responsibility. He gladly gave us hints about bits of work that we were going to do ourselves, (laying the sub-floor, laying the tile, installing back splash). A more skilled, enjoyable, and affable craftsman you'd be hard pressed to find.
Description of Work: We had our kitchen remodeled. This involved taking out a wall between our kitchen and dining room, moving some HVAC (unexpectedly), re-framing some windows, and closing off other windows. It wasn't quite stripped to the studs, but almost.

OUR EXPERIENCE WAS EXCELLENT. DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE WORK WAS DONE IN THE MONTHS OF NOVEMBER, DECEMBER & JANUARY, HE WAS CAREFUL NOT TO ALLOW THE WORK TO BE DELAYED BY WEATHER & HE MINIMIZED THE TIME OUR BUILDING WAS OPEN & EXPOSED TO THE WEATHER. WHEN I INITIALLY CONTACTED HIM, HE CALLED BACK IMMEDIATELY & WAS ABLE TO INSPECT THE SITE VERY QUICKLY. HE WAS ALWAYS EASY TO REACH & ALWAYS RETURNED CALLS PROMPTLY, SOMETHING THAT'S UNFORTUNATELY RARE AMONG CONTRACTORS. HE KEPT US INFORMED ABOUT EACH STAGE OF THE WORK & WAS ALWAYS FRIENDLY, INFORMATIVE & PROFESSIONAL IN HIS MANNER. THE WORK HE DID WAS EXCELLENT. THERE WERE OCCASIONAL DELAYS WHEN HE ATTENDED TO OTHER JOBS HE WAS DOING, BUT HE KEPT OUR PROJECT MOVING ALONG FAIRLY RAPIDLY. HIS WORK WAS NEAT & HE CLEANED THOROUGHLY WHEN HE FINISHED. HE BROUGHT IN A PLASTERER & A PAINTER TO FINISH THE INTERIOR THAT WAS OPENED UP IN THE COURSE OF CONSTRUCTION. THEIR WORK WAS ALSO EXCELLENT. I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM HIGHLY AND WOULD HIRE HIM AGAIN
Description of Work: Because of improperly installed flashing, water had leaked under the siding of one wall of our building. The leak was active for 15 years. As a result, a large area of studs, siding, and a support beams had become completely rotted. Mr. O'Hara completely removed and replaced approximately 180 square feet of wall - the entire side of one room in the house. This included the removal and replacement of two windows, all exterior siding, studs, insulation, and drywall. He also had to remove and replace a major support beam holding up a rear deck.

ADRIAN WAS ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, AMAZING. HE CALLED TO CONFIRM OUR APPOINTMENT, HE SHOWED UP ON TIME, HE GAVE US AN ESTIMATE ON THE SPOT AND HE WAS AVAILABLE TO DO THE WORK WHEN HE SAID HE WOULD BE. HE NOT ONLY DID THE WORK, HE DID AN IMPECCABLE JOB. HE TOOK A HIDEOUS PLUMBING PIPE AND TURNED IT INTO A THING OF BEAUTY. THE WORK HE DID WAS SO IMPRESSIVE, THAT WE EVEN PAID HIM MORE THAN HE ESTIMATED. WHAT HE DID WAS SO WORTH IT TO US. HE IS ONE OF THE FINEST CONTRACTORS WE HAVE EVER WORKED WITH AND CAN RECOMMEND HIM WITH ABSOLUTELY NO RESERVATIONS. IF YOU NEED SOMEONE TO PROBLEM-SOLVE, WORK WITH YOU ON WHAT YOU WANT, AND DO A PHENOMENAL JOB, ADRIAN IS YOUR MAN.
Description of Work: ADRIAN GAVE US AN ESTIMATE FOR HIDING A PLUMBING PIPE THAT RAN THROUGH OUR DINING ROOM, THANKS TO THE PREVIOUS OWNERS. HE ALSO DID THE WORK.
