S & J EXCO CO

They advertise seasoned quality hardwood: "S& J Exco sells quality firewood that is hardwood, seasoned, screened and debarked." These words are from their internet page. The wood they delivered to me had a moisture content of over 50% and even the smaller kindling pieces mixed in were to wet to burn. I thought that maybe the wood was soaked with water from the bottom of their concrete storage bin and then had frozen. I brought a load in the house so it would thaw out but it was still soaking. In the end I just mixed it with other wood that I had and burned it at a high temp. It was too wet to leave in the stove overnight when I banked down the stove, Their wood is sold by the truckload, not by the cord, so I asked on the phone "how much is a truckload and was told that it was 6 scoops. Well how much wood in 6 scoops? I was told that 5 scoops was around a cord therefore I expected more that a cord. If a scoop is 20% of a cord then 6 scoops would be 120% of a cord, around 150 cu ft. When stacked, there wasn't even a cord. My neighbor came over and we were talking about the lousy wood and he suggested that I take some in the workshop and cut it in half to see how wet it was. It looked like a tuna steak. !/4" dry on the outside and soaking wet in the middle, We had never seen wood like this before. I still have all the pictures of it. I wish there was a spot to post them here. On 3/23/14 I took the samples up their office in S. Dennis and spoke to "Bob" who was at the counter. I showed him the cut sample and asked to speak with the manager about this but no one was there. I left the sample,along with my name and phone # but no one got back to me. I still have some left as I couldn't use it, I am hoping that it has dried out over the summer and is now usable. Unfortunately, we seem to be at the mercy of wood suppliers. I have been using a wood stove for over 30 years, I use around 4 cords a year so I have a good handle on wood and stoves. I had a supplier in Dedham, MA who delivered 2 cords at a time. One, seasoned for immediate use and another two that needed more drying time. I paid him a reasonable price for what I got. I/we are so used to getting ripped off in this arena that we just grin and bear it when it comes to being had. I am just getting ornery in my old age. I have never complained about this before, but I should have. Thanks to Angies list we now have a forum. Roger :-)
