I've lived in my old house for nearly 20 years. Every few years, slates could come off, or we'd need something fixed. I've struggled to find a good roofer who will do slate work and do it well. The last couple repairs were done with the wrong type of slate (color mismatch) and adding copper hangers everywhere. I just thought that this was the best I was going to get. I checked out the reviews of Doherty Roofing and I had to try again. Jason is a REAL professional. Self-proclaimed perfectionist who cares deeply about his work. He came out a few times to ensure that he sourced the right type of slate (a near perfect match!) and fixed all this repairs from years passed. As we worked, he explained his approach. I learned a lot about slate work - and even my house - from talking with him. He also installed copper snow bars to keep snow from the front walk. I *cannot* recommend Jason more highly.

Work performed by Doherty Roofing was slate inspection, repair, and installation of a snow guard rail. Jason visited for estimate, discussed the scope of work and requirements in detail. Office manager Liz was prompt in responding to emails, providing a quote and status updates. Jason performed necessary repairs and snow guard installation, and also patched a portion of rubber roof that he observed had wear/damage. Highly professional and experienced. A+++

Jason from Doherty Roofing was very responsive and professional. He knows his business well. They moved their schedule around to accommodate the work I needed. Jason was concerned with heavy rain being forecasted for that week and they did the work in one day. I was very happy with the work they did and was happy to pay for the work.

Well. From what I can see (gutters no longer leaking), the job was done well. Jason was nice enough to take care of the gutters on the garage which were not part of the contract and did not charge me extra. He came when he said he would

I mostly spoke to Jason who did the actual work. He took lots of pictures which I shared with my condo association. There was an obvious tear, that he thought may have happened when the team who shoveled the flat roof last January removed the snow. He fixed that as well as worked on several other vulnerable seams that could be problems in the future. Their company was the first to respond and were able to evaluate the problem and fix it in a few days. There was a leak coming through the ceiling light fixture in the bathroom which could have been dangerous. Time will tell if it was totally repaired, but it certainly appears that the mission was accomplished.

It was a pleasure dealing with an obviously honest roofer who has an eye for, and experience with quality methods and materials and who was willing at all times to discuss the evidence and causes of my house problems. I found Jason to be versatile and thoughtful about possible causes of the leaks I had and well-informed and experienced with slate and adjoining materials. He showed up per our agreement and worked steady and safe especially with ladders. I especially appreciated that he left his phone shut off and in his bag while he was talking with me or working (which was most of most days).
Description of Work: Misc roof and wall repairs on my all-custom, 1976 wood-sided house: replace about 4 damaged or missing slates, patch about 12 gutter seams with adhesive roofing pieces, replace a split clapboard, nail down 2 loose clapboards, seal a second floor roof-to-endwall joint, seal a leaky second floor slider door, remove a weathervane from a ridge/main beam. Also check the health of the slate roofs where last summer's painters staged their ladders on them.

Jason removed all roof materials that were rotted, either via wet or dry method, and rebuilt both framework and all odd-angled sheeting. He applied rubber roofing and ensured that all seams and edges were tight. We spoke about other materials and he was very informative and thoughtful and helped us save money for the next project. He is timely, quick, efficient and courteous. This repair was a few years ago - so this review is written after several years of remaining dry with each storm.
Description of Work: Roof area over dining room is almost flat; old Victorian tin roof had an overlay of an 80s repair - in general, undefined leaks occurring depending on rain direction.

Jason, the owner, does it the old-fashioned way, by hand, soldering every 3 feet or so. The gutters and much of the roof were in a terrible state and he had to rip out all of the gutters, the old metal apron that had 50 years of gunk on it, remove/replace slate and redo everything with copper and slate. He was meticulous and was able to give me advice on what could be saved so I didn't have to replace the whole roof. The amount of copper needed was huge and he had the gutters (100' on a side) made in one piece. For the copper apron he made each piece and crimped, the welded them. He was great to work with and worked very well with the carpenter we had. I didn't know I needed a huge roof repair until May, and by then most contractors were busy through the fall. All but one day of those who did come out to view the roof did not follow up with an estimate although I called them repeatedly. The one who did follow up quoted $30k for staging alone. In contrast, Jason got back to me right away with two proposals. He started within a few weeks and we were able to modify, add things as the work progressed. I could always get in touch with him via phone, email or text and he would respond right away. People would stop to watch the work progress since few people use copper any more. I talked with other contractors who gave offhand estimates double of what we ended up paying. Jason also does regular roofing, not just copper and slate, but he does it the right way--no junky tar or funky metal. He is courteous and professional and generally unflappable. He even loved my dog!
Description of Work: Replaced copper gutters and large 3 foot high copper apron on an1860 Mansard roof. Reflashed 2 chimneys and several dormers, 2 very large valleys, added new copper hips and copper downspouts. Replaced slate on about 50% of the house. Replaced roofs on about 6-7 dormers.

We have a slate roof that has been badly repaired in the past. We had a garage with a seriously leaky slate roof and some accumulation of moss. Jason Doherty gave us a very reasonable estimate to repair both. When the job required much more time and much more slate than he had anticipated, he honored his estimate, replacing about twice as many slates on our house roof as he had anticipated and power-washing the garage roof in order to repair it. The garage no longer leaks. The roof on our home looks terrific. Jason and his associate arrived on time. They did the job efficiently and cleaned up carefully. I have recommended Jason Doherty to neighbors and would recommend him to anyone seeking a diligent, highly skilled roofer.
Description of Work: The roof of our house was examined for broken or loose slate tiles. Each damaged slate was replaced in the difficult way slate needs to be replaced. In addition, our very leaky garage roof was power washed and repaired. We had been advised by a contractor that the slates would all need to come off and the underpinnings repaired. Jason Doherty assured me he could make the garage roof water tight by properly repairing the roof. He was right. He explained to me the difference between the slate used on our house roof in 1937, which is very fragile, and a slate that looks similar but is more durable. He recommended the more durable slate and replaced a substantial portion of the roof tiles.

My experience with Jason was spectacular. For starter's his price for the roof was the lowest of all bids. He included the chimney work and still came in under the other roofing bids. The chimney quotes we were getting were in the range of $3000 just for the chimney and the work was stellar. Jason was available by phone at all times and worked well with email as well. The work was done promptly and the clean up was very very good. Again I can't stress enough the care taken in not damaging the surrounding gardens. I know Jason is skilled with slate and so when the condo association builds up the reserves we will go back to him for the slate work, no question. The roof looks great!
Description of Work: Jason stripped the roof off of our Mansard Victorian in Boston, installed new roof vents, new ridge vent, ice shield, flashing around the skylights, chimney, and roof vents then installed new architectural 30-year warranty shingles. His cousin is a mason and stripped down our chimney that was falling over and rebuilt it straight as an arrow with the same bricks after cleaning them. Jason also repaired shingles that were wind damaged on the side of the mansard roof ( we only replaced the top because we are planning on installing slate on the sides). Jason could not fit a dumpster in our driveway and could only drop the shingles on one side of the house because there are gardens on the other three sides. He and his help took extreme care not to drop anything in the gardens putting in extra effort to carry the shingles to the driveway side of the house drop them to the driveway, pick them up and put them in big green bags from Waste management who took them away.

As a resident of Jamaica Plain, I received a copy of the Jamaica Plain Gazette in which Doherty Roofing advertises slate expertise. I am the owner of a building with a 100+ year old slate roof and had been looking for a slate specialist for some time. After looking at some local examples of Doherty's work, I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship. This impression was enhanced upon meeting Jason Doherty during a free and thorough estimate, which included several options taking price into consideration without compromising the quality of work. Jason is direct, his pricing is fair, his experience is extensive and his work ethic is stellar. I have happily had him work on two other copper and slate roof elements and continue to be completely impressed and totally satisfied. In this day and age it is rare and wonderful to find a true craftsman in any trade and Jason is just that.
Description of Work: Complete slate roof restoration included the removal of old valleys and complete restoration of valleys, hips and ridge line with copper, replaced broken slates and re-flashed one chimney with copper.
