We are a full service slate and copper roof repair company. We have been repairing and maintaining slate roofs for four generations. Some have said we are New England's best kept secret. We take great pride in knowing we satisfy all of our customers. We can take on the small repairs but you can also rely on us for the larger projects. Call today and let us help you extend the life of your slate roof. It could last another lifetime.
Getting a hold of a roofer in August is not easy, but members of the Castle team diligently returned our calls despite a hectic and trying personal and professional schedule. Kevin Williams Jr. has a low key, yet personal and professional approach. He is not in the business of hard sell, or fear-based sales. His quote was very reasonable and he stuck to it. We have had some tremendous downpours since the work - completed, as promised, in less than two days - and the roof seems to be holding fast and dry. Kevin has asked us to keep an eye on it, and I have no doubt that he would come back in a flash if needed. If every contractor we hire for our new (old) house is like Kevin and his team at Castle Slate, then we will be very lucky.
Description of Work: Kevin and his crew replaced close to 5 dozen Munson slate tiles on our roof after cleaning up a couple of nasty emergency tar patches the previous owner had put up. Castle Slate also installed copper flashes in the valleys of the roof.

This was an overall excellent experience. Kevin was a consummate professional who has clearly been doing this a long time. He arrived to look at the work on time and provided a punctual quote. I tried to get 2 other quotes from roofers that are highly regarded on Angie's list and none of them kept their appointments so I awarded the work to Kevin. The crew came out on time and performed an excellent job. The PVC pipe that they ran through the roof was white and they took the liberty of painting this black so that it would blend in with the slate better. My only concern with this company is that Kevin is very difficult to get a hold of. He would generally not be able to call you during the day and I would only speak to him from 5:30 on. A minor complaint but I would suggest leaving him your cell phone number as opposed to your work number which I made the mistake of doing. This was an overall excellent experience and I will continue to use Castle Slate to do bi-annual checks on our roof and to clean our gutters.
Description of Work: Ran a 4 inch PVC pipe through the roof, flashed the roof and replaced broken slate. Cleaned and oiled the gutters.

These guys are amazing! When our roof started leaking during the sustained rains in March, we called many roofers. We have a slate roof, but the previous owners had slapped tar on whenever there had been a leak, so fixing the roof for the long run would have involved chipping away all that tar to see what's underneath. We talked to a dozen roofers, some of whom proposed putting on another layer of tar in the problem areas, others proposed replacing our slate roof with asphalt, and yet others proposed proper slate roof repair. After mostly tepid experience with almost a dozen roofers, we talked to Castle Slate. They were the only ones who were willing to discuss all approaches with an open mind. Encounters with the other roofers always left us with the nagging feeling that they weren't giving us a balanced view - they were either trying to push expensive work or painting a partisan picture in favor of their services. They did all this with just a cursory inspection of the roof from the street - this one roofer barely took a look and said the roof needed to be replaced! Castle Slate (Kevin) was the only one who put up a ladder, got up on the roof, pin-pointed the problem, and discussed various solutions to it. It was apparent that these guys were true professionals - someone who offers solutions, not an agenda. We decided to remove the tar, see what's underneath, and fix it the right way. They gave us a very good price estimate for the work. They scheduled us in about three weeks out since they had other jobs to finish. They started work on Thursday of the scheduled week (weather cooperated). They finished on Friday, and they worked tirelessly to do so - I found out later that they didn't even break for lunch on Friday, since they wanted to make sure the job got done! (We did get them some baked goods as a small gesture of appreciation. We would've gotten them lunch, too, had we known.) Like I said, these guys are amazing. Talk to Castle Slate after you've talked to a few other roofers, and you'll see the difference.
Description of Work: Removed tar that had been put on the roof by previous owners as temporary patch, installed new flashing in valleys and around chimney, replaced broken slates.

They were fabulous and wonderful. They did a beautiful job and were incredibly reasonable. They were at the top. The price that they charged was far less than another company from whom we had got a quote. They were terrific even though the 2 jobs were a bit different for which we got quotes. We need to have some additional things done and so, we would use their services in the future too.

We had a serious leak in the slate roof of our home in Arlington Heights. We tried for weeks to get a roofer to look at it, but mostly we were ignored. One company referred us to Castle Slate and we are eternally thankful. The owner, Kevin Williams, Sr., responded very quickly to our request via Angie?s List. He looked at our roof, pointed out where he thought the leak was, said it would cost $750, and explained why. He made no effort to pressure us into getting more done than he thought was necessary. Even though they were booked until next spring, he thought, since it was not a major job, he could do it within a couple of weeks. And, as he stated, about two weeks later his son and an assistant did the work in a couple of hours one morning--and threw in a little tutorial about slate as well. Very friendly, and efficient. Immediately after the first major rain, they called to make sure the leak had stopped. It had; not a drop come through. All this is in contrast to another company from Billerica that insisted we needed to remove a substantial section of the roof, for $2,500, to fix the leak. I subsequently checked Angie?s list and found that they had a very poor record, mostly D and F ratings. Due to Castle Slates personable, professional behavior and excellent workmanship, Castle Slate Roofing will henceforth always get our business when we need work done on our roof.

We are extremely pleased with the work they did on our roof and recommend them highly. They were very knowledgeable, thorough, and professional, and the work was done on schedule and kept tidy. Attention was paid to details, and there is a real sense of craftsmanship in the work they did. It was a pleasure working with them, and our house looks great.
Description of Work: The time had come to do some much needed maintenance and improvements on our slate roof. The work included replacing broken slates, installing a new copper valley, installing new copper roof hips, and removing an old cupola and installing a new one with a weather vain. They also did carpentry work on some of the fascia boards, eaves, and rafter tails.

Roofers don't come better than Kevin Williams and his son, Kevin: who essentially gave me a new slate roof, something my five-story, 1890's home desparately needed after years of my neglect: and abuse by roofers who only "fix" with tar. Their grand company is Castle Slate Roofing, and they are the proud (though modest) "youngers" of four generations of roofers. This longevity shows in their expertise: for example they patiently told me the reasons why I needed new gutters, valleys, flashings, and ridge caps. And, this father/son duo delights in the hard work itself: they see the big picture, get started, and stay with it: finishing when expected: and for a fair price. Best of all, in calling, "up to" or "down from" the roof, I noticed their mutual respect for one another.

It went as smoothly as anyone could hope.
Description of Work: We had about 30 slates replaced due to winter storm damage. Castle was the lowest of three bids, by a lot. Kevin Jr. and crew showed up on time and performed the work. A week later a loose slate (not one replaced) fell from the roof. We called them and they showed up the next day, replaced the loose slate, then checked the entire roof and replaced about five more. They charged us nothing for this additional work!

Castle Roofing was recommended to me by a coworker, as well as reading the reviews on Angie's List. We have a 1920 built tudor that has a steeped pitched roof and we knew that we needed someone that knows how to work on slate to be able to safely go up there.
Description of Work: We got an itemized estimate of the work that needed to be done on a slate roof. We decided on fixing the most pressing needs and doing the rest of the work later. When the job was scheduled, they came on time, answered our questions, were professional and even cleaned out a clogged gutter while on the roof.

The owner, Kevin Williams, viewed my slate roof and provided a reasonable estimate of $1350 to remove a vent pipe and do some spot repairs, but then became very difficult to reach. I made several attempts to schedule the work - by email and voice mail and actual telephone conversations, but I got responses like "we've been real busy lately" and their last communication was a promise to call "after next week". That was more than 5 months ago and I've since given up. I could have accepted an explanation like we prefer bigger projects, instead they wasted my time.

UNFORTUNATELY WHEN CUSTOMERS WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE BEFORE WINTER COMES, THAT IS NOT FAIR TO US. WE CAN ONLY HANDLE SO MUCH WORK DURING THE YEAR. THEN WITH ALL THE SNOW, I DON'T KNOW WHEN WE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THE WORK ANYWAY. ALSO CUSTOMER NEVER SENT IN SIGNED COPY OF CONTRACT TO GET BUILDING PERMIT. SO KIND OF BOTH OUR FAULTS. Took two days of steady hard work. Everything about job was better than expected. Father and son company who were very competent and courteous and so was the crew. The problems started when we noticed a couple of weeks later that the roof was still leaking in one of the spots they had worked on. We called Castle Slate to see if they could come back over, but did not get a response. That was over three months ago. After multiple phone calls and messages left, we have not gotten a call back. Our roof continues to leak. I understand that it is winter and obviously difficult to work on a roof when it is snowy and icy out, but I would at least appreciate a return phone call. We live in an old house that was neglected by the previous owner for decades, so obviously there is the potential for a lot of future work at our home; in fact we were planning to have them out in the spring to replace the roofs over our bay windows. I hate to leave a bad review, since we liked these guys and they obviously know their stuff, but bottom line is our roof is still leaking and we now need to find a THIRD roofer to come and finally take care of it. Frustrating experience.
Description of Work: We had another roofer out to investigate a roof leak. That roofer told us that our slate was at the end of its life and we needed to replace all of the slate on our mansard roof, at a cost of $4000 per side. Of course we wanted another opinion, and called in Castle Slate. They returned our initial call promptly, arrived when scheduled to provide an estimate, took their time looking things over, and informed us that while we needed a few slates replaced or repaired, the slate overall had plenty of life left in it. We hired them to do the slate repairs as well as some copper flashing work. Though it took several weeks and numerous phone calls to get them to actually come out and do the work, we were impressed with their honesty, professionalism and obvious knowledge of and interest in old houses.

WE DID THIS WORK IN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER AND THE LEAK THE CUSTOMER IS TALKING ABOUT WAS DONE AS AN EXTRA ITEM AFTER WE INITIALLY GAVE THEM THE PROPOSAL. A CONTRACTOR HAD INSTALLED A REGULAR WINDOW ON A MANSARD ROOF.WHEN IN FACT THEY NEED A SKYLIGHT (VELUX) OR SIMILAR. WATER JUST ROLLS DOWN OFF TOP ROOF AND LEAKS INSIDE. WE FIXED SOME SLATES AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME AND TOLD THE CONDO OWNERS THAT WAS WRONG WINDOW SETUP. THAT IS GONNA LEAK DOWN THE ROAD TO TO REPLACE WITH A SKYLIGHT. THEY TOLD ME THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THAT AT THE TIME...I BELIEVE ONE OWNER HAD CALLED OVER THE WINTER. THEN GOT ONE MORE CALL 3 WEEKS AGO TO SCHEDULE MORE WORK ON PROPERTY. JOB WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A ONE DAY JOB HAD TO GO BACK THE NEXT DAY AND MY FATHER ONLY CHARGED THEM FOR OUR TIME AND MATERIALS.

The job was done well and the crew was very considerate throughout the work, cleaning up and leaving things in great shape. These guys are great at working on antique houses and I would not hesitate to use them again. They were able to do work that other roofers simply lacked the experience to do properly (particularly the slate roofing). The price was fair for the work and I feel I got my money's worth. They will not be the cheapest roofer you'll find, but they're not unreasonable and in exchange you get quality and experience.

Kevin from Castle roofing was very prompt in returning our call and came out immediately to inspect our problem. We received a written estimate within a few days that gave us price for that job and also included two other small problems that he found upon inspection. When I called him, he didn't push us to have those other repairs completed and was more than happy to just do the one repair. His estimate was very reasonable and we were so happy that he was willing to do this relatively small job for us. Many other roofers I called did not even want to come out after they heard what we needed done. Kevin and his crew came on-time and fixed the roof as planned. They were very professional and cleaned up so well that you would have never known they were there. Our porch roof has never leaked since. When the time comes to replace our roof I would not hesitate to call this company again. They were terrific!
