Joe Ahern was friendly and enthusiastic throughout the project. He has many years of experience and is full of funny stories. He promptly came out to do the estimate, and once we scheduled the job, he and his crew didn't waste any time-- they start at 6:00 or 6:30 am and work till 2:00 or 2:30 pm each day! Working nonstop, Joe, Jimmy, and Bill installed the duct work in a couple of days while dealing with the challenges of a Cape house without any existing duct work. This work included running a large duct from the basement through a first-floor closet and through our second-floor bedroom into the attic. Jimmy also set up the air handler in the basement and ran ducts for the second floor through the attic, while Bill broke out a cinder block in a basement wall to run basement ducts servicing the first floor. On the third day, they ran the electrical line set and set up the condenser in the backyard. They also installed new thermostats to control heating or cooling for each floor, and ran new wiring to support the thermostats. On the fourth and final day, they charged and balanced the cooling system, and they tested the heating and cooling systems. Everything worked perfectly! Joe was a pleasure to work with, and Jimmy and Bill were sharp, hard-working, and witty. The team has clearly worked together for many years, and their experience showed. Our house presented several challenges, but they had encountered them before and quickly figured out ways to deal with them. Throughout the project, they cleaned up around the various holes and cuts they had to make, and they did a thorough clean up on the last day. I called about 20 installers, interviewed 6 and chose Ahern for price and my sense of his knowledge, experience level and attitude. He emailed his estimate (as they all did). I called him on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving to award the job. He said he'd start on Wednesday. He showed up as promised at 7:30 and got the boiler done that day. He came back on Thursday to install a domestic hot water tank. Most of our communication was via text messaging, which I liked.

They did the job in less than a day with minimum hassle. They did a great job, and gave us the required paperwork for the rebate.

The installers showed up at 7:30 and completed the entire job in one day (it usually takes two, but this was a Friday.) The installation looks great, and while we won't really test the heating until it gets cold, the hot water part works fine. They left the work area clean and neat. The old boiler and scrap were picked up later that evening by a third party junk collector. Joe Ahern, the owner, is a local guy, based in Somerville, with lots of experience installing heating systems. He responded personally to my request for an estimate, answered all our questions, and gave us a great price. He returned all my calls within 24 hours, and was flexible about scheduling an installation time.

Joe thoroughly inspected the existing situation and recommended a smaller boiler than we had, since there seemed to be competition with the hot water heater that overloaded the v enting system, and for the size of our house the smaller one was adequate. The crew came when promised, worked very hard and finished the same day. When we were not able to get the boiler going the next weekend, Bill came out to the house (on a Sunday, at no charge), solved the problem and helped us get smart about operating the unit. He also upgraded our thermostat at no cost, making operation even easier. These guys are pros!

They are very responsive, they came out quickly. I contacted them at the beginning of October and the work had to be completed by the end of the month which it was. Their bid was very competitive. The work appears to be fine. I am happy with it.
