I phoned Phil Tuesday morning and he told me if I could drop off the cushions that needed to have foam filling replaced he could have them done by the end of the week. He was extremely helpful picking out the right filling (how soft or firm I wanted it) and they were ready as promised by Friday afternoon. He did an excellent job and I was very happy with the result. Feels as if I have a new set of furniture. While there I saw a chair he had reupholstered for another customer and it was beautifully done, so I would certainly use him again should the occasion arise.
Description of Work: Replaced foam filling in seat cushions from leather sofa and lo ve seat.

Phil was great. He was very responsive. I called him on a Saturday and sent him pictures of the chairs. He allowed me to come over right away to look at fabrics. Came immediately to pick up the chairs and did a fantastic job on the chairs. The only glitch was in the price. He quoted a price up front but then increased it after the fact stating it was due to the fabric choice and the fact that I hadn't indicated pickup and delivery. I would definitely use him again but would ensure that I understood the details of his price quote so that I wasn't blind sided by an increase in the end.

Phil was great. I provided a foam cushion, but probably should have had him supply it in hindsight. I provided the fabric and he did a really nice job putting a custom bench cushion together for me with a zip and piping.

We spoke to Phil via phone, and got the details on pricing and timeframe for performing the work, before we went to his shop in Saugus (run from his home) with our armchair. Upon arrival, Phil showed us a very large selection of fabrics (for order), as well as some readily available choices. We were pleased with his readily available selection, and chose one of them - which reduced the project timeframe. Phil stuck to his previously quoted pricing, and finished the chair on time. Upon pickup, I had thought we owed $375, but he very honestly reminded us of the proper pricing ($360)! The chair itself looked great: we aren't experts, but we could see the attention to detail in his craftmanship. While Phil doesn't run a classic storefront, we would definitely use Phil's services again because of the quality of his work at very reasonable cost.
Description of Work: We had an armchair that had been in our family for many years, but whose fabric had yellowed, stained and possibly mildewed. We brought it to Phil to re-upholster.

Phil is a master. He advised me on the type of foam and fabric to purchase. Had the cushions done faster than I expected. They look great and I expect that they will last a long time.
Description of Work: Made 5 covers for bench cushions. Cushions were approximately 5 feet x 1 1/2 feet.

I arranged with Phil Houten to meet him at his shop in Saugus with the chair. It is a desk chair my mother had as a girl and the springs were shot in the cushion, but I didn't want to pitch the chair for sentimental reasons. Phil determined that it would be difficult if not impossible to replace the springs, so he rebuilt the seat using webbing and firm foam. I had brought him fabric which I had on hand that he used to complete the cushion. The workmanship is high quality and Phil was a pleasure to work with. The chair looks great. As he is on his own at his shop, he needs time to do the work, but if you are not in a rush, I would highly recommend A & A Custom Upholstery for this type of project. I did not get other estimates for fixing the chair, so I don't really know if the price was competitive, but it fit into my budget.

I would not change anything with the projects detailed above, for each project I called Phil from A&A and spoke with him in detail about each project. By taking a picture of the item and e-mailling the item to him he was able to give me an approximate cost of the project. The dining chairs were about $100.00 each, those were done 3 years ago. The formal living chairs cost approximately $600.00 done 2 years ago. The couch and love seat cost $ 2100.00 completed Feb. 2012.
Description of Work: This is the third time I have used A&A Custom Upholstery. The first job was recovering 6 dining room chairs which needed to be re-padded, re-upholstered along with new new nails heads, I purchased the mirco-fiber fabric directly from A&A. The second job was 2 large formal living room chairs with a complicated floral pattern I provided, no work needed on cushions just re-upholstering. For both of the jobs detailed above, I dropped the chairs directly at A&A. I was pleased with A&A, his price was reasonable and on budget and done in the time frame given. The third job was a large sofa and love seat, I looked into buying a new sectional, but many items out there just did not look like they were built all that well. After having these couches for 10 years the frame is still very sturdy and the original quality was top notch. After 12 years, I was tired of the red floral print slip covers, sloppy down cushions. I had Phil from A&A come to our home to discuss the project. They have "great construction and will look new again I promise you" per Phil Houten owner of A&A, his plan was to re work all the cushions and re-stuff with down as well as re-uploster with a upholstery grade fabric, for a completely different tailored look, no longer the original slip cover style (Pottery Barn style with fat rolled arms.) This project was a lot more pricey than I expected it to be, I also spoke with other upholstering companies to get verbal quotes which were in line with A&A. I decided to stick with A&A knowing the quality of his work. Phil picked the items up from the house and returned them in 2 weeks as promised. This project went really well and we are happy with the end result.

Phil helped us greatly in the selection of fabric and we are greatly pleased with the results. Unfortunately, the fabric vendor shipped the wrong material to Phil. He didn't notice this until a few days before the delivery date. This led to a two-week delay. Workmanship was good, after Phil cheerfully fixed a few small imperfections on one chair.

We picked Advanced Upholstery because of their good ratings and relatively close location. Phil came to our house with fabric samples, told us about our options, we agreed on a price and he took the set with him that day. There were a couple of delays in delivering the finished job (due to fabric not being delivered to him on time and, in the second case, a snow storm) but, overall, the job was done in less time than we had initially expected. We were kept up to date on the progress on our job. Good communication. The finished work is absolutely beautiful (see photos). Every detail was just right and, in some ways, he improved on the originals by engineering a more substantial webbing (what holds up the cushions) than was there before. Phil is a nice guy and knows A LOT about upholstery...he offered more details and options than we could keep up with!
Description of Work: Total reupholstering of a set 31 year old sectionals. Transporting the set to his shop, stripping of the old fabric and stuffing, recovering everything in fabric we selected and delivering finished set to us.

Phil Houten of A&A Custom Upholstery did a fabulous job making a slipcover for my sofa. It fits so snuggly that it really looks like the upholstery rather than a slipcover. He matched the fabric pattern nicely and the detail of the overall finished product is really quite impressive. I could not be more pleased and recommend him without hesitation. Phil is easy to work with and helpful with suggestions. Phil came to my house twice once to make a pattern (took about 3 hours) and once to put the slipcover on.

Excellent- striped fabric was handled beautifully. Phil picked up the chairs, did the work, and brought them back. He understood the special nature of these chairs and went out of his way to get the special decorative nails/tacks that we wanted. He was very nice and very professional. Excellent workmanship and communication. We would definitely use him again.

Description of Work: My dog had chewed part of the welting on a sofa. Phil repaired it as best as it could be done. He took some fabric from under the sofa (extra fabric that did not show) to make a piece of welting to replace what had been damaged.

THIS EXPERIENCE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER. PHIL IS A TRUE CRAFTSMAN AND A REALLY DECENT HUMAN BEING. HE WAS STRAIGHT UP FROM THE GET-GO REGARDING THE PRICE, FABRIC, TIMING, ETC. ALONG THE WAY HE OFFERED VALUABLE ADVICE REGARDING THE COUCHES FRAME AND PILLOWS. THE END RESULT WAS OUTSTANDING. MY HUSBAND, WHO PRIOR TO THE JOB HATED THIS COUCH, NOW WANTS TO MAKE IT OUR PRIMARY LIVING ROOM PIECE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE'LL CALL ON HIM AGAIN AND AGAIN.

PHIL DID A GREAT JOB. WE HAD SOME OLD CAT-RIPPED AND TORN AND SAGGING FURNITURE THAT CAME WITH OUR HOUSE. THEY HAD SOLID FRAMES THOUGH, AND WERE CUSTOM MADE YEARS AGO, SO WE HAD A & A RESTUFF, RESPRING, AND RECOVER THEM. CAME OUT BRAND-NEW! PHIL'S AN ARTIST. HE DID THE WHOLE SET IN ABOUT 2 - 3 MONTHS, HE WAS READY BEFORE WE HAD THE ROOM DONE! WE FIND OURSELVES NOW LOOKING AT STUFF ALL OVER THE PLACE FOR HIM TO DO... VERY HAPPY.
