Alan (an crew) ALWAYS arrived at my home most often before promised time. Found all services to be completed with professialism and attention to detail. I felt as though the work was done as Alan would do in his own home. My "to do list" grew over the course of our association and was met cheerfully. Appointments were made via email, as were follow-up instructions. If you desire dependability and an excellent outcome, be sure to choose "We show up!" Their name says it all.

Alan did a fantastic job. The railing and post are beautiful and couldn't be happier with the work Alan did. His estimate was spot on (price above includes hardware and labor) and he was very responsive, friendly and professional. As a focal point of our front hall, it was very important to us to make sure everything was perfect - Alan made sure we felt very included in the work and we couldn't be happier with the final product. As others have said, we will most definitely be using Alan and We Show Up again.

Fantastic! Alan indeed shows up exactly when he makes an appointment, responds very quickly to inquiries, provides accurate estimates, and does great paint work for a very reasonable price. We asked him if he would do additional handyman work, and he said of course, but he would have to put us on his schedule for a two months later. His appointment system is great and I think it's the reason he is able to keep to his timetable and keep his customers happy with appointments and time estimates he can actually keep. We look forward to having him back later this month. It's rare to have contractors who are so prompt and so good at managing their time commitments. We really appreciated this. Plus, he's a really hilarious guy to have in the house for a few days!
Description of Work: Interior painting of the living room in our 1800's home, including lots of windows with mullions and wooden shutters.
We have a contract to use him. He was good in giving us the estimate.

Response from We Show Up
I spoke to the client about why I received a B rating. I showed up on time, responded to their questions, and was as professional as I ever am. I told them what I could do, what I couldn't do, what would require outside professionals (plumber, electrician) and sent an estimate within a short period of time. I met with them again and recently got notice they want to go ahead with the project. I am waiting for a deposit. They also said they would change the review but that hasn't happened yet. I saw them initially on April 21 and sent the estimate by April 24th. The follow up estimate was sent on June 5th after seeing them again May 25th. Very nice people. I look forward to doing the work for them.

After the initial visit during which he assessed the situation, Alan returned and performed the work. Several conversations were required to coordinate what was needed for the microwave installation and to squeeze the work in. Alan was friendly and responsive and performed the work competently and successfully.
Description of Work: Alan devised a method and performed the modification to a cabinet shelf to enable a microwave oven to be installed by the delivery/installation company. He bored holes through bolts and metal brackets, making room for new bolts to be installed for microwave support.

We recently had some carpeting installed in our den. Because of the thickness of our carpeting, the door leading into the den and a closet door in den needed to be cut to provide clearance so the doors could be properly opened and closed. We wanted this work to be done on short notice (less than 24 hours) because we wanted the room to be ready for visitors. I found Alan Weisman of "We Show Up" on Angie's list and gave him a call. He was very polite, accomodating and professional. I called him late on a Thursday afternoon and by early Friday afternoon the work was done as promised and at a very reasonable price. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the level of service that Alan provided. We have a "wish list" of home improvement projects throughout our condo, and we plan on calling Alan when we are ready to proceed.

First off, a more polite gentlemen you will not find. Allen was very respectful and courteous in each conversation I had with him. We coordinated a time for him to come by my house that worked for both of us, and he showed up precisely on time. He took a look at my leak, and then discussed his opinion on what might be causing it and was up front about his capabilities and what would be my best path (which was to use a window guy instead of him). I appreciate the mini-education on how the leaks creep in from poor windows casing seals and his honesty in referring work out rather than attempting to do something he isn't an expert in. If I ever have any inside jobs that need doing, I for sure be calling Allen back!

Alan came for an estimate (free). Took a little while for him to schedule me, but it was a small job and working it around others was part of the bargain. Very responsive. Likes to communicate by email which was just fine with me. Took stairs out, came back quickly when the new tank was installed. Put stairs back in better shape than before! Extremely neat. Picked up everything, not even a dribble of saw dust left. Definitely would call him again!

Alan is very responsive all around - from swinging by for an estimate to pricing, scheduling, and doing the job. He was thorough in his work and cleaned up after himself. After getting started, his saw blade was not doing a good enough job on our rather thick glass tiles, so he went out and bought a new blade. Did not change us for the resulting extra time commitment. Very fair and up front about his pricing. I didn't realize it at the time, but we had 2 different batches of tile and the color was slightly different. Alan brought that to my attention and we figured the best way to proceed. That strikes me as typical - Alan is very good at communicating any issues along the way and works with you to come up with something that works, rather than just doing whatever he thinks is right. That's customer service and you can expect the same.
Description of Work: We had Alan install glass tile on two section of wall in our kitchen.
Alan provided a printed daily update of the work in progress and a running total. He consulted with me b4 doing any work not included in his original estimate. He originally estimated 7 days of work. It took 7 days. Alan and his employee cleaned up every night. I plan to use Alan again to rebuild my screen porch and whatever else the house needs. He was pleasant and easy to work with.
Description of Work: Updated insulation on front and back doors. Fixed a large tear in a screen on screen porch. Blocked a hole in a gable where bees had moved in the previous year. The bees were professionally exterminated prior to the blocking. 3 Bedrooms - Removed wallpaper, plastered holes, painted walls and ceilings. Painted window sills and fixed cracks in the cross pieces on the windows. Made suggestions for the brand & type of paint to use in the bedrooms.

Alan was incredibly throrough when giving the quote. He explained all that needed to be done and how that factored into his quote. The work itself is excellent. Alan purchased and delivered both doors for us. It took much longer than he anticipated to replace the basement door, but he didn't charge us for the all of the extra labor. I would hire Alan again in a second!

Alan and his assistant Nick did a great job -- everything turned out exactly as I had wanted. They were on time (as well as very understanding when we were late one day!), efficient, and very pleasant to have around. Some of the walls in the unit (older brick and concrete behind dry wall) were difficult to deal with, but Alan patiently figured out the best way to deal with them, with great results. I would highly recommend We Show Up!

Alan brought Fred along for much of this job, and he was a very pleasant addition to the team. I felt very comfortable with both the skill-level and personality of each man. This was my second time having Alan work in my home, and he continues to be a very nice person who does good work at exactly the scheduled time. I could've rolled this work into a major lead abatement project I was having done shortly thereafter, but our family had to be out of the house for that work, and our walls were tested to be safe. I knew having Alan working around my young children would be safe and appropriate--in fact, the kids love watching him work when it isn't too dirty or dangerous for us to stick around. It was also nice having a professional in the house while I moved our stuff out because it was easier to let him climb a ladder and remove window hardware than to do it myself with my toddler underfoot.
Description of Work: Skim-coated bare plaster walls from which I'd removed wallpaper. Removed wallpaper from the very high sections of the stairwell. Also removed window blinds and curtain rods and other small items in preparation for a larger job I had coming up.

Alan came over to give us an estimate, and was very up front with his pricing method, which is somewhat unique, he charges by the hour for jobs that are done, and you can have him do as much or as little detail as you'd like. We figured we'd play it by ear, and see what kind of work he did and how quickly they moved before we committed to anything more than the rough work. The first day Alan and his assistant Fred had erected a GREAT dust barrier that kept all the dust in the room where he was working, and the rest of the house clean. They also removed the wall, completed the entire sheet rocking project and disposed of all the refuse neatly and quickly that night my wife and I decided that we would have them finish the room completely. We gave Alan a key, and the work proceeded. Alan was in frequent contact with me whenever there was a question. As an example, when looking at the cracked ceiling plaster, Alan noticed there was moisture from near the skylight. He called me and asked if I wanted him to tar around the skylight and to add insulation to the ceiling as there was none. I readily agreed to this, and appreciated the heads up. As I mentioned earlier, we had not intended to have Alan and Fred finish the room, but there work was of such high quality we decided to have them paint. Fred noticed several other cosmetic things he could do that I would not have thought of, or thought possible (such as fixing some molding with wood putty). I want to explain why I said the pricing was fair as opposed to good or great, in case anyone thinks that is a negative. Alan's pricing was VERY clear, and when I got the final bill, I was not surprised at all. I knew that every time I asked them to do something else, it would cost me in terms of Alan's time. He charges $50/hour for one person, and an additional $40 if a second person is required. Some days we had one guy, some days we had 2, depending on what they were doing. I feel like we paid a bit of a premium for quality, but that was money that I was happy to pay. We felt very comfortable with Alan and Fred having a key, and on the one day they arrived and we were not able to lock up our cats for them, Fred took excellent steps to make sure our cats could not get into the working area. I have recommended Alan and We Show Up to others and would contract them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: We needed a wall removed to extend our dining room, as well as some sheet rock hung in the garage. We also need a new external door in this room, and some new closet doors, and some cracked ceiling plaster repaired.

He was punctual, courteous and very pleasant. He took the time to measure the wall spaces accurately in hanging the pictures and was very efficient in the work he did. There was a wall grouping that was particularly difficult to do, but the results were excellent. He took the time needed and was extremely patient, making sure that he got it the way I wanted it. He also put the stand together and set the printer up very quickly and efficiently. I would definitely use him for any other jobs I need. He does not hesitate to do odd jobs that others may not want to do, responds quickly and courteously to messages and phone calls and shows up when he says he will. I contacted several others before contacting him - one I called and e-mailed several times who kept putting me off and then never called me back, another who said he did not want to travel to my area, even though it was not a great distance, and another who said he didn't work weekends or nights. I would definitely recommend Alan because he is reliable, courteous, gets the job done right and he SHOWS UP!

Alan was a very pleasant person to have in my home. Never mind the work, he is simply a nice, intelligent man (a retired teacher), and he was kind to my children and careful of my home. When I called him, I thought we were just going to prime and then paint over the old plaster my wallpaper stripping had revealed. He suggested the skim-coating technique, which I hadn't known about, and the room where we took that extra step looks significantly better than the hallway where I opted for a quick paint job because I know we'll be doing some remodeling upstairs in the next couple of years. Having had a team of professional plasterers work in my house just 18 months before during a kitchen remodel, I'll admit that the skim-coated walls are not quite as perfect as what three full-time plasters did. There are some trowel marks visible if you stare intently at the walls. Whether this is the nature of the products involved or the skill of the guy applying it, I don't know, but I mention this for anyone with a need for perfection. My own budget did not allow for hiring the full-time plasters to do a single room. (It takes at least two of them and they don't do less than half days, so it would've been VERY expensive.) I don't think the trowel marks are visible to someone sitting in the room, but, with the furniture out and the overhead light glaring down on blank walls, they were visible at some angles. Painting the hideous fake-wood paneling has made my whole entry hall look fantastic. No complaints at all there. The hallway looks about as good as it can look until I add the wainscoting and do the other future projects up there. Alan painted the walls and ceiling there using the two colors I'd selected and using two colors to highlight the details on the ceiling. Alan offered to lend me his professional wallpaper steamer for free when I'm ready to tackle the remaining wallpaper in my home. Since I'll no doubt give him more work when I'm done, that could be seen as just good business, but I think he is just genuinely nice. Anyone considering hiring Alan should know that he prefers not to use certain oil-based products because they are harder to clean up after and bad for his health. Since I had already intended to use very low VOC paint, this was no problem for me, but could be for you. For instance, the primer I used on the bare plaster upstairs was a very high covering, thick oil-based primer than stank for days and days and made me feel quite ill. It's what my plasterer recommended I try before hiring him to fix up walls that might look fine. Two different professionals told me it was the best product for the job, but Alan wouldn't have wanted to use it. He charges by the hour to keep things simple. His time estimate for me was right on, so he knows how long jobs will take. I also had everything prepared, however, such as moving out furniture, so he could start right away.
Description of Work: Every room in our old house had old, dated, and at least somewhat damaged/aged wallpaper. I learned to strip wallpaper this spring, then primed the upstairs hallway before realizing I wasn't cut out for large painting products on my own. Alan came to finish fixing up the three areas I'd prepared. He prepped one room by skimcoating with a thin layer of a plaster-type product. He filled in all the holes and other wall imperfections. Finally, he painted the skim-coated room, the fake wood paneling going up my staircase walls, and the upstairs hallway.

After receiving an estimate from We Show Up, I decided to have them paint the hallway and stairwell in my home. However, when the painter was halfway through the job, he stated that the price would now be double what the initial estimate came out to be. I did not understand this, as there was nothing that changed on the order, there were no details that were not discussed during the estimate visit. After this, I doubt that I will go back to We Show Up.
