They did show up, early in fact. They had previously painted a room and did a fine job. This was just some odd jobs, moving furniture and putting together a pool table. The furniture took 30 minutes. The pool table was complicated and after 2 hours, I was told a critical piece was missing, rendering the piece fairly useless. I understand this was not thier problem, but the fact they left a mess (the box the table came in, all the packing peanuts), didn't bother to clean up, and didn't try to offer me a discount because they could not finish the job, was disappointing. Additionally, instead of charging the rate he had before, he doubled the rate without telling me, and then sprung it on me as he left. I ended up paying more for them to try to figure out putting together the table than the table was worth itself. I felt ripped off. Still angry about it. Would not recommend them nor would I use them again.

Response from We Show Up
We are sorry that the client is so unhappy. When we arrived (I tried to get there early since I knew the client had to leave for an appointment and we wanted to finish the job for her) we immediately got to moving the furniture she wanted moved. Then we went to work assembling the gaming table. It was a gaming table for children that was designed to rotate presenting different gaming surfaces. The pieces (of which there were many) were not manufactured as precisely as necessary thus necessitating that we make corrections so that it all fit together. This extended the assembly time significantly. And then, when we were at the final stages of assembly, we discovered that the all important axle was missing. The table could not be mounted for rotating and we could not complete the assembly. We explained this to the client. Knowing she had to leave and did not want to be late, we placed the packing material, etc. into the back of the basement where it had been left for us. We cleaned up the play area where we had worked to set up the table. There was frustration all around since we could not complete the assembly. Finally, I did bill for the time we were there doing the work. I charged the same rate as I had for the previous job which was a year earlier painting the Master Bedroom. The rate was not any different. My estimates indicate that I bill for time and fuel plus materials. We had no materials on this job so I only billed for time and fuel. Again, I am sorry that she is unhappy. We were not happy about being unable to complete the assembly.

I originally contacted Alan in early June, after finding him on Angie's list, and asked him to quote some jobs that we needed done. At the time, the list included (1) enclosing the space at the bottom of the cellar stairs by building two walls and installing a door - this created an enclosed space for our litter box farm, as we have four cats; (2) repair weatherstripping on our front door; (3) install lattice around the deck; (4) replace shed doors and trim, and (5) remove rust and repaint bulkhead. Alan promptly responded to my email request for a quote, and came out to our house 2 weeks later. He provided a quote and required 1/3 of the quote as a deposit, and once he received that he scheduled the job. At the time of the quote he told us he was booking in late August, but that turned out to be mid-October. While we understood that he was busy, the delay did surprise us a little bit and in the end we decided not to have a couple of the jobs done - partially due to the delay. So once we set the start date, Alan promptly arrived (along with Dave), and they did a super job on the "litter room" and front door repair. They were courteous, asked questions to make sure they did the job the way we wanted, and each day they cleaned up completely. They were professional and really did an excellent job - the cats love their big new space and we now have access to our cellar and a great place for litter boxes. I will definitely work with Alan again - in fact, some of the jobs that we put off are already scheduled for next spring.
Description of Work: Enclose area at bottom of cellar steps by building 2 walls and adding a door, and minor repair of front door weatherstripping.

The space around our shower insert in the master bathroom was drywalled and painted when the house was built about 8 years ago. Recently, we noticed the caulking around the top of the shower insert had failed, with several paint bubbles and the beginnings of some mold issues. Alan came out to take a look, and agreed that tiling around the insert would solve the problem long-term -- he also recommended a waterproofing product to go behind the tile. Although we expected to wait a few weeks to schedule, Alan called a couple of weeks after the estimate with an unexpected opening. Luckily, I was able to source tile quickly, so the job was done in record time! It took Alan and his assistant, Dave, a day and a half to finish. It was very meticulous work, with lots of tile cuts, walls out of plumb, and a mosaic tile inset -- all in a very small, tight space. They "showed up" right on time, let me ask tons of questions, and did a fabulous job. The actual cost was a bit over the original estimate, mainly because the tiles I purchased were more time-consuming to install than what I originally requested. We've hired Alan before, and knew he would approach our job as if it were in his own house. He ALWAYS does what he says he's going to do, no project is too small for him to take on, and his prices are very fair. If he can't do something, or believes you need to call in a licensed electrician or plumber, he'll tell you, and we trust him implicitly to work in our home. Alan is truly the perfect "handyman," and a rare find. We couldn't be happier with his work on this project, and we'll definitely call him again.
Description of Work: We needed tile around a fiberglass shower insert in the master bathroom, including waterproofing between the drywall and tile. It was a relatively small job, as tile goes, but beyond our comfort level to tackle as a DIY project.

Alan did a great job for us. His work looks great. He is not cheap, but very reasonably priced. He did everything we asked of him, was punctual, and showed-up when promised. He also helped us save money by figuring out ways to salvage ballisters as opposed to replacing everything. We would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: We hired him to do various handyman related tasks, such as securing a fence, firming up posts, fixing loose bannisters and stairs, and replacing our back door. We also had him do larger things, such as demolish and replace our screen for our screened-in porch. Finally, Alan repaired our widow's walk for us.

Alan came in on time and spent about an hour carefully going over the bathroom and suggesting various steps we could try ourselves to identify and correct the problem. We were impressed by the fact that he spent so much time, not getting paid, explaining to us how we could do a lot of work for ourselves. Alan patched several seems and tar-sealed a spot around the bathroom skylight. He scrapped and patched the damaged wall and ceiling areas, and painted the entire bathroom. All of this work was done in a day and a half, and looks great. Alan's estimate was extremely reasonable, and though the final price came in slightly higher, it was generally in line with the estimate. We will absolutely use Alan again!

We Show Up lived up to their name. They were early for the estimate and on time for the services to be performed. The estimate process was quick and easy, and he actually came in under the estimate. Due to unforseen circumstances we neede to move up the date of the service and Alan was more then willing to accomodate and made it out just a couple days later. He performed the service quickly and competently and I would defientely contact We Show Up for more handyman work in the future.

I could not have been more pleased with Alan's work - he was professional, skilled, punctual, pleasant, and cleaned up his workspace daily, even for a job that lasted several days and required that he leave equipment behind. He painted 2/3 of my home (the rest was not part of the job) and did so quickly and professionally. Not a drop out of place! He also custom designed a wine rack for an alcove in my dining room that was an odd size (due to duct work in the walls) and was actually narrower at the back than the front. He hand cut each shelf to exactly fit the required space. He also showed up on Easter Sunday (when no one else was available) to put a temporary lock on my front door when the lock I had broke and the door would not close properly. I would hire him for any work I need done in my home.

Not only was the job done on time (actually earlier than expected!) and done well, Alan was considerate of my time and money. The job cost a bit more than the estimate, but I have found this to be true in most remodeling projects. Overall, this remodeling job was a good experience for me and in my lifetime, that is rare!
Description of Work: Alan did some demolition and rebuilding of two rooms in my basement that had gotten wet over many years. They tore down an old wall and doors, put up new ones, filled some holes in the cement floor, built a large enclosure to cover some pipes, and fixed the bulk head door.

They did not do a good job and had to end up taking the air conditioner out of my window myself. They had to keep canceling and rescheduling. When I had to get in contact with them to come back out they were hard to get in contact with. They had to come back to fix a job that was done wrong but they didn't charge me extra for it. I didn't feel that they were very professional. Their prices were low but they didn't do a good job. Sept 9, 2013: I'm updating my review in response to the business' reply to AL via phone. They state that the slope of the window didn't allow for proper installation ("...did not allow for the AC unit to be sloped appropriately."), but I had someone else out here and he fixed it completely within a few minutes. He only charged me $10 for the work and there hasn't been one drop of leakage since! The exact same A/C has been in place in the same window for close to two years now and no other repairs or alterations were performed on the window. As such, I say buyer beware! I'll review the other person in a few minutes because he is absolutely wonderful and reliable (Teague Construction).

The client is correct in that it was difficult to schedule time to come out - a combination of her being unavailable and my being busy. Additionally, I originally went out to re-install an AC unit that had allowed water into the apartment unit. After re-installing it, it continued to allow water in. Upon examination I found that the window it was going in did not allow for the AC unit to be sloped appropriately. I explained this to the client and suggested they contact the building owner. When I left the client appeared satisfied.

I had a really good experience. Alan, the owner, was really accommodating to my schedule, working always at odd times but convenient for me. He quickly replied to my messages and provided prompt estimates. He is very knowledgable and he gave me some advise me on how to go about of my ongoing house projects. I would definitely call him back if I need help in my next project.

We Show Up was responsive to our initial phone call. They requested that we get our own paint in the color we wished to have the doors painted. They showed up on time and finished the job in a timely, professional manner. I was extremely pleased.

The particular challenges of the many renovation and repair problems in this old apartment are never ending...so we expect a long and happy relationship with Alan and "We Show Up" .That said, it will be pleasure to entertain a long relationship with a real pro. After consulting with Alan way back in the Spring of 2011, it was not until October that we were finally able to actually start work! Alan stayed in touch with us as the weeks turned to months and the job(s) we had agreed upon initially, continued to change in scope and form. Alan always showed himself to be flexible, and honest about his time, commitments, and experience. Where work didn't have to be done, or could be accomplished with less expense and effort - he SAID SO! - Never resorting to the "hard-sell" Not only does he SHOW UP. He LISTENS!!! And he ANSWERS! Fortunately, Alan utilizes email and modern communication to stay in touch with his customers: and answered within 24 hours or LESS! Once work had begun, he arrived promptly and was prepared. His assistant, Dave was, likewise, a pleasure to work with, always upbeat, careful and considerate - and VERY CAPABLE! Together they formed a reliable, responsive team that never lost site of the fact that they were in the middle of someone's home! NO RADIOS BLASTING or unnecessary noise or loud yelling. Alan treated OUR house...as if it was HIS.He met each task with sound advice, competence and patience. If we had issues or concerns about some aspect of the repairs, he was always polite and patient and offered answers and solutions. He was up front about the kind of work he did - and did NOT do - and offered names and resources whenever possible. The electrician he suggested was likewise, jovial, competent, reliable and mindful of our costs. Alan and his colleague Dave undertook an incredibly difficult (and dangerous) job wallpapering our old 10 feet high ceilings - a daunting challenge. They worked hard and long - with precision and care. The results were beyond our expectations. At the end of every work day, they cleaned up the area meticulously - even washing the kitchen floor to remove any traces of plaster dust and/or debris! We have spent many hours gazing in satisfaction at the result of their handiwork and efforts. And we are looking forward to working with Alan and "We Show Up" well into the future...
Description of Work: Repair and replacement of old window and door casing, crowns, mouldings and baseboards. This included removal of old structures, and reconstruction of these elements from specially purchased millwork stock (source for these hard to find mouldings and casings was provided by Alan) Repair of plaster walls and ceiling with numerous surface and structural repairs. Wall and woodwork surface repair and painitng. Difficult application of Architectural embossed wallpaper to repaired ceiling surface to create a faux "Victorian Tile" look. Fabrication and precise cutting of Crown Moulding for Ceilings.
