Services we offer
JB Masonry specializes in all types of masonry for both residential and commercial projects. Our company will complete the masonry services listed below. These jobs include but are not limited to repair, re-pointing and new construction. Services we offer: Chimneys, Brick work, Block work, Re-pointing, Fireplaces, Walls, New foundations, New build
My condo building required extensive brick maintenance (repointing, resetting bricks, waterproofing, etc.) following recent water damage. I contacted John for a quote/assessment of the work needing to be done. We arranged a time to meet at the house and John arrived at the scheduled time. I think John was very thorough in his assessment of what needed to be done, spending roughly 45 minutes evaluating the house. John was also price competitive with his competitors. Our condo association ultimately decided to go with another brick mason for the first phase of the work being completed, but we will consider John again in the future as the remaining phases of work are completed.

John Byrne came to the house the day after I contacted him. My husband and I both felt that he gave us an accurate estimate after he thoroughly reviewed the job (climbed up into the attic space and climbed on to the roof to assess the damage to the chimneys). We received the estimate and it was very competitive with the other estimate that we received. John and his co-worker showed up to work when they said they would. We are very pleased with the appearance of the repair work on the stone chimneys (100 year old field stone) and the thoroughness of the work that was performed on the chimneys in the attic space. John was very considerate of our home......cleaning up after the job at the end of each day and working inside the home without shoes. This made my clean up minimal and it was easy and confined to the closet that accesses our attic. Overall, a great experience and we plan to have John back in the Spring to do work our front steps (also made up of field stone). We were so happy to be able to work with someone local and who was very customer focused.
Description of Work: J B Masonry did the following work..... Repointed two stone chimneys above the roof line Repointed the same two chimneys in the attic space Fitted both chimneys with stainless steel chimney caps

In the meantime, I informed Mr Byrne that the structure could not be built for two weeks. After two weeks, Mr.Fonseca showed up and built a very sturdy structure attached to the house on two sides, so that the corner of the house, including sliding glass doors was well supported. John Byrne showed up and checked to see what kind of interior was inside the foundation. Was it empty? Was it full of dirt? We did not know. He and a helper drilled into the foundation, and determined that it was about a foot thick cement block construction. I then asked Mr. Byrne for an estimate before he started the job. He promised to email me an estimate, and he did by the next morning. Unfortunately, even though I thought it would be good to work with Mr. Byrne on this project, I could not afford his estimated price. I must say, that I may ask Mr. Byrne to do some chimney work at a later date. He off the cuff commented that my chimney could really use a cap to prevent water damage and unwanted animals entering-- and he is right! Mr. Byrne is easy to get along with and probably does fabulous work. His price for this particular problematic foundation job was jsut a little too high for my budget. I wish him well on his future jobs, as he is a decent individual.
Description of Work: I asked John Byrne to estimate the repair of a foundation wall under my sun porch which had unexpectedly badly deteriorated. He was very punctual and told me that I would need to have a supporting structure built so that the corner of the house would not collapse while the foundation was being replaced. He told me that his carpenter/engineer was not available, as he was on vacation. John asked me if I knew a carpenter who could build the supporting wooden structure, and so I asked Mr. Fernando Fonseca, who had just done some great carpentry repair on my house, including restoring a wooden cupola, all of which was required to be repaired prior to painting and staining the entire house. John was to meet Mr. Fonseca to discuss what kind of structure was needed, but then John was unable to be at the house because his child was very sick. I totally understand that. Mr. Fonseca came anyway, and looked at the sunporch and foundation. He told me that he could not complete the supporting structure until two weeks more, but would do the job.

The brick foundation for our three decker had not been repointed in decades. Someone tried to patch holes with concrete. John Byrne surveyed the site gave an estimate to include fixing the front step because the water underneath the foundation caused it to separate from the other steps. John even demonstrated the sealant used on the brick by applying it to a recently rebuilt chimney that leaked. The chimney hasn't leaked since. The work took some time because they started in late fall, and the job is sensitive to temperature and precipitation. John made sure we were happy with the job, even after having to do more work to fix the front step than planned. John prefers using brickyard materials (not big box home supply stores), so we have a solid front stop instead of the hastily added feature of old. JB Masonry did a fantastic job.
Description of Work: JB Masonry ground out the masonry and qwik-dry cement in our brick foundation and repointed all the bricks over 3 days. The crew sealed the joint where the brick wall met the concrete sidewalk, gave the brick an acid bath, and sprayed sealant over all the brick. In addition, he poured a new foundation for our front step and rebuilt the brick base and installed a new tread. Finally, John Byrne cleaned up the mortar dust that got everywhere, leaving our place watertight and new looking.

We were completely pleased with John's workmanship and professionalism. He took on the job on short notice and late in the year - I was eager to have the work done before winter and John fit me into his schedule (and did some of the work on the weekend) in order to accommodate our needs. He was honest and open in discussing our options (repair versus rebuild), and made a fair recommendation. The quality of the work is great - the repointing was done neatly and after a lot of grinding of the old mortar. The chimney has a complex corbel at the top, and John was able to get that looking nice again. John is very pleasant and easy to talk to. It was all around a good experience, and I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: John repaired an old chimney that was leaking water into the room below. He ground out old mortar, repointed the entire chimney, reset bricks in several tiers near top, added new lead flashing to base, and applied waterproofing sealant.

Bad experience.
Description of Work: Our roof/chimney is leaking, so I called John for an estimate for chimney repair/rebuiling, and he said he was going to call us back for an appointment. But it has been almost two weeks, and he never called us back. Even though our roofer recommended him, I will not do business with a company/individual who is so not professional. Will not recommend him to anyone.

Response from J B Masonry
I John Byrne called to your house a year ago and gave you an estimate for your chimney. You never got back to me until you called me again this year and I told you the quote I gave you last year would remain the same. I have a busy schedule with meeting customers and getting work completed and have not the time for calling to people's homes on numerous occasions. I'm sorry you feel this way about my company. I hope you had a great experience with your other masons. Thanks, John Byrne.

I think they are pretty good. I called them and they responded by coming out quickly. The price they gave me was based on their knowledge. It was not a major overhaul. It was basically patching. They were very nice and quick, but we wanted a bit more. We didn't end up going with him.

John gave me a good price and did a fantastic job. He said that he hated doing work on a chimney like ours when he knew that completely rebuilding it was the best way. He is very busy and so you may have to wait a bit for him to show up but his work and his price was completely worth it. Glad to have such a good experience. His personality is delightful also which is a bonus.
Description of Work: We needed our chimney (a small part - most of it is completely inside our home) rebuilt. We could have gotten it repointed or repainted (came that way) but it wasn't worth it. We're glad we decided to tear down the old, crumbling chimney and rebuild. It looks gorgeous.

John was timely. He provided an estimate, and performed the work on the same day. With the heavy rains heading in, and the roof being newly installed, it was imperative that the chimney was addressed immediately. John took the time to explain the issues and how he was going to repair it. Also, he took extra care while cleaning up when he finished. I highly recommend John, and I will use/refer him in the future.
Description of Work: John repointed my chimney. I was in the process of having a new roof installed, and it was brought to my attention that the mortar between the bricks was compromised around the chimney above the roof line. John took the time to grind out all the existing mortar, and install new concrete.

Our ceiling above the fireplace started to show signs of a leak during heavy rain- and snowfall. On a recommendation from a colleague, I contacted John Byrne Masonry to come take a look at the flashing. He and his helper arrived at the appointed time, set up the ladder, and had a look. John invited me to climb the ladder (I'm not afraid of heights... much) and see for myself the (a) crumbling tar flashing where the chimney connects to the roof, and (b) the extremely punky/crumbling masonry around the brick. That evening, he emailed me a PDF estimate for: - full repointing from roofline up - new led flashing at base of chimney - all old mortar between bricks ground out with 4' blades - chimney repointing with type N mortar and sand combined - sealer applied at end of job to protect from further damage A great deal of the cost, as I understand, was for the scaffold that needed to be set up for this project. We agreed and work commenced within the next couple of days. John completed the work quickly, then had to wait a couple of days for the mortar to set before applying the sealer. All in all, the scaffolding was up for about a week. I appreciated the care he took, and he conducted himself with utmost professionalism and concern (including concern for the peach tree at the base of the scaffolding!). I would definitely contract with John again--in fact, I asked him to take a look at some smaller jobs around the house, but at the time he was too busy with other work to handle such work.

John Byrne was recommended by my roofer when, while having my roof replaced, my chimney (which goes through my bedroom) began to disintegrate. He came quickly and was able rearrange other jobs to take down the chimney from my bedroom floor through the roof and rebuild the chimney in five days. John and his workers were able to coordinate with the roofers to complete the job. They were very easy to work with and helped me move my furniture for this unexpected repair. They also worked quietly, cleaned up after themselves and did a terrific job on the chimney. It looks great inside and outside!

John was referred to us by our roofer Harco Roofing and it was a much appreciated referral. John came out at the appointed time to look over the job and provided an estimate in a timely manner. He showed up as scheduled and worked steadily. Weather and unanticipated difficulties slowed the job down somewhat, but not much. He was willing to work weekends to get the job done. The unanticipated difficulties involved having to remove more broken bricks in the retaining wall than he had thought he would, but he did so willingly and final result is terrific. The chimney is very handsome now, too.
Description of Work: John rebuilt our chimney from the roof line up and refurbished a brick retaining wall - replacing many broken bricks.
