We were over due for regular maintenance which he quickly corrected. There was no muttering or indecision. He did the job and left.
Description of Work: The Cooling Unlimited man arrived promptly and worked quickly to evaluate our A/C system and service its parts. He went to the attic, and down to the machinery that is outside several times. He explained what he found to my husband. We were pleased with his work.

Very complex project, converting from oil to gas and from steam to hot air. They were helpful planning the project, and there was an extra paperwork component relating to a loan which they complied with. Went very smoothly. Crew showed up on time each day.
Description of Work: Installed gas-fired hot water heater. Installed gas-fired furnace. Installed hot air ducting. Took out oil tank. Did oil to gas conversion. Took 7 days overall.

We looked at many companies and 3 in particular. Cooling Unlimited had a lower price for this system in their quote but may have been the same in the end. Another company did the paperwork with the gas company but disappeared before we were able to move ahead with the project. Now the system works wonderfully. This was a big project taking close to two weeks and done in two parts, all but AC in November ($29,000) and rest in May($5,000). The demolition guy was very careful doing the heavy and difficult work of removing the radiators without damaging our walls and floors and more than absolutely necessary. About 3,000 pounds in radiators came out of the house. Oil tank removal was clean and easy. While Mike and Sean were nice, showed up early and got right down to work doing their parts and coordinating plumbers, inspectors, electricians. They were very messy, left dozens of screws, small pieces of metal and plastic, chunks of cement and plaster and construction dirt all over the basement. I had given them a shop vac, broom etc to use. They spilled coffee and left a big mess of crud from the vacuum and coffee all gunked up my work sink in the basement. There were black fingerprints left all over the house. I always had to be proactive to ask them what they'd done and what was coming next. Many problems in the heating part of the project came from differences between the sales and the installation team's understanding. They never told the installation team they had to add a humidifier onto the system (was in the original contract) and that added time, then it didn't function well (leaked) for weeks. After several service visits, they brought in the humidifier manufacturer representatives to get it working right. Some parts of the installation had to be re-done like when they put the ducting in front of the basement windows in a way that we could no longer open them or see out of them. These seemingly illogical things were frustrating since we didn't thing we'd have to micromanage that, seemed like it would be part of having years of heating design experience. The team knew we wanted to finish the basement eventually. They didn't include the cost of wooden heating vent caps in the quote, though we discussed them when we met with the sales guy and we had to pay extra for that plus we have young children and they should have put the cost of screens in the original quote so toys don't go down. Frankly it was insulting to be nickeled and dimed after paying so much, would have been better received in the initial quote. We had to involve the owner at times and he was committed to help get things right, but you never want to get to that point. The office was helpful with our rebates and MassSave paperwork. It took them and us a lot more time than it should have. The installation team didn't save the UPC symbols in a clear place, the initial paperwork left off the thermostat, the sales person had to keep re-generating the proposal/invoice. Lots of re-doing paperwork. In the spring, we had them put in the AC. We hesitated a bit because of how the heating had gone, but they had designed the system and we were willing to give them another chance to get things right. They scheduled us very quickly and planned to do the whole thing in one day. It works well now. They didn't ventilate properly and while working with welding a copper pipe, I nearly passed out and had to leave the house due to a reaction to the horrible fumes. It was very scary. They let the electrician leave before testing everything and he hadn't attached one of the thermostats and had to come back the following week.
Description of Work: Removed our broken hot water heater, oil tank, furnace, radiators, all of the visible old oil piping, baseboard heaters. Installed a new gas high velocity furnace and hot water heater and added central air conditioning and high velocity ducts. We had to put in two HVAC systems: one in the attic blowing down and one in the basement blowing up. Helped with the historic commission documentation and attached two condensers for the air conditioners. Put a humidifier on the heating system.

We called Cooling Unlimited yesterday because our upstairs AC was not working. They promised to come between 1PM and 7PM. The person came at 7PM, and instantly told us the problem was the capacitor. We agreed to let them change it. He then proceeded to tell us that he could not do the repairs at that time without charging us time and a half. We disagreed - it wasn't our fault that he showed up at 7PM. When we were firm, he called his supervisor, and then agreed to do it. This was an unnecessary request. If he had just changed it, and gone away, it would have been fine.
Description of Work: The capacitor was changed on the upstairs air conditioner.

When they were removing the old unit they pulled out a metal tray, which was part of the old unit. Unfortunately that has created a couple cracks in the floor of our basement. I now have water coming in through the floor. They have tried to fix it but were unable to. I would hire them again, but also probably ask more questions during the installation.

Tech was very professional, courteous, prompt. Only minor glitch was that the coupon was $20 off a "service call" -- and A/C maintenance is not considered a service call for some reason. The tech gave me a $10 coupon without making me print it, though.

The price, service and quality of work were all very good. The one challenge proved to be the responsiveness of the team to scheduling; however, the over experience was excellent. A unique thing I found with Cooling Unlimited is that they are not wedded to the use of one particular manufacturer or model. They will install whatever you want and let you do the research yourself or take their recommendation. They also did a great job installing conduit around the wiring and hoses for cosmetic reasons and to protect the insulation from wildlife (squirrels and raccoons have eaten away at that in neighbors units for insulation for their own homes). I am still awaiting the warmer weather to finalize the electric hookup to the compressor and the testing of the fluid levels, but i don't expect any issues with that.
Description of Work: I have a condo in the South End on the top floor with roof access via private stairs to the roof deck. My unit is 800-900 sq ft. i had ductless a/c installed with two indoor fan units and an outdoor compressor.

Reponse was professional and punctual, as promised. Technician was on site for approximately two hours: he admitted to not knowing about the operation details of our Tekmar control panel and spent the first hour making calls to research how the panel worked; the second hour was occupied with waiting for the system to heat up the necessary volume of water to get the heating system fully operational. We were charged $165 for "diagnostic" (this took a very short time since the control panel indicated it was clearly calling for heat, but the hot water system was given priority). Had this been the only charge, we had agreed to it and were happy to pay it. But, we were charged an additional $238 for "add-ons/tasks" which amounted to on-site training for the ill-prepared technician and waiting for the system to heat up 40 gallons of water. We called to complain about the charges and were told that the office would "look into it and get back to us." No one returned our call and the check was cashed without further communication. In fairness, all dealings were professional and pleasant, but the overcharges were outrageous given the task. This, combined with the lack of follow-up in response to our complaint have resulted in our feeling taken advantage of and ignored. Very unprofessional and unsatisfactory result. In the end, the company seemed more concerned with our understanding and receipt of a service contract than the fairness of the charges on our bill. Very short-term business concerns.

They did a great job. They weren't the cheapest but they were by far the most thorough. They were neat and clean, they didn't leave any materials thorough out the house. The owner was very knowledgeable about different systems and very up front about systems that I was curious about. He was also very helpful with information about a deal where you can update your heating system and they will give you a no interest loan. It's unbelievable and so poorly advertised. You have to do calculations to get this loan and the company did all of the calculations for me. They literally took out the old boiler and all the duct work and replaced everything. All of this took less than a week.

This was an emergency--we lost our heat on the coldest night of the winter. Called five 24-hr services; Cooling was the second to call back. Mike told us it would take 45 min to get here, and 45 min to fix. Right on both counts. He immediately diagnosed that our igniter broke and luckily had a replacement on his truck. It wasn't the exact part, but he made it work. He didn't try to sell us any other services--perhaps because it was 2 am! He also honored our Angie's List coupon.

My furnace stopped working. I checked a few things, without luck. At 10:00PM, I called Cooling Unlimited's 24 Emergency number, as it's going down to 13 degrees tonight. They called back after about 15 minutes. 10 minutes on the phone, and the problem was solved.
Description of Work: The Technician described one more place to check for a clogged intake pipe: right above the combustion box. Even though the outside end of the intake pipe was clear, a bunch of little leaves had fallen in to the pipe and were then sucked to the grating at the entrance to the combustion chamber.

Not only did they call on the next business day, they sent someone out to spec the job, do the measurements and had it all installed within 4 hours. I couldn't have asked for better service. Had 3 contractors give me a bid. Cooling Unlimited was responsive, and their sales/service guy, Charlie Brown, was very helpful. A big issue with replacing these systems is that many of the older furnaces were too big, so getting the right size is important. (Oil is not cheap, so one of the ways to save is making sure you don't oversize it) With 3 bids I got 3 different sizes!...they fell in the middle. Also, was concerned that the bid they sent was for a water vs. steam boiler. Spoke to them about this and they just made a mistake as most oil systems are water vs. steam. Also let them know that a smaller boiler was recommended by another, so he came out and remeasured everything and ended up agreeing that the smaller system was best. We went with a Weil-McLain boiler. Finally, they typically use copper piping when installing, and I had heard that iron was the way to go, so even though it was the day prior to installing, they were very accommodating in making sure it was done with iron piping. Because of the few issues listed above, gave them a B for professionalism. The installation went without a hitch...and now we are back up and running. Even though they were not inexpensive, they were approx the same as one bid, and $500 less than another, so they get an A for price.

They were responsive -- we called on a holiday (Martin Luther King) and we had a technician over within a few hours. The receptionist was nice enough and indicated that there would be a $129 service charge just for a technician to come to the house and take a look ... OK, so much for "free estimate". After two technicians over six hours, they managed to get the furnace working again, so overall I'm happy with the result. What I'm not at all happy about is their pricing structure, which lacks any transparency or consistency. At one point, they thought that we needed a new control board. The first technician indicated that they are usually "close to $400". I went on line and found multiple sites that sell the control board for our furnace at $95. I called back and the receptionist explained the $400 includes parts and service -- all inclusive. When the second technician showed up with the control board, he explained that the cost would be $585. Hmm, that's pushing $500 for one hour of work -- maybe we should all become HVAC technicians. In the end we were charged $383.38 (gosh, what precision!) to replace an ignitor that costs $28 on line. I will not use this company again. Rather, I will search for another HVAC company that can actually give an estimate that breaks down parts and labor.

One of the best parts of my experience with Cooling Unlimited started when I first called and spoke with Doreen. She was fabulous!! I was in a bind because I was closing on the sale of my house and I need somebody to come to a furnace cleaning/servicing right away. They were all booked up, and I was ready to call elsewhere, but Doreen didn't give up. She said, "Oh, let me see if I can get you in sooner." And she DID -- the next morning -- first thing. She was a real life saver! Thank you Doreen! : )) Then, not only did the technician show up to my empty house the next day where my realtor let him in, but it turns out my oil tank had run out of oil. He couldn't do the work until it had oil in it. So, they got oil put in for me (the realtor) but the technician came back THAT afternoon to do the work on my furnace so that I would have it all done by the end of that day (like I needed it to be to close on my house). Thank you SO much Cooling Unlimited. A special huge thanks to Doreen for booking my appointment and helping me out, and to the technician who did such a great job and even came back after the tank finally got filled.

I was very happy with the expertise of the person who came out to do the quote and I trusted his recommendations, especially when we realized the previous furnace installed back in 2003 was not the model that we'd been quoted! The workers were professional and did an excellent job, as far as we can tell. The only area where I'm not completely happy is using rocks as the support for the condenser - I expect that won't remain level through the winter, and I don't know how much that will effect the energy efficiency of the AC.
Description of Work: We originally wanted to replace our 22 year old central air conditioner. We ended up also replacing our 7 year old furnace, because the person who came out to quote noticed that the furnace was sized too big for our house, and because a rebate (from National Grid) and improved energy efficiency made replacement worthwhile. They removed and disposed of the existing condenser, and coil, installed a new Lennox condenser and coil, reconnected everything, and tested everything. They also removed and diposed of the existing furnace and replaced with a Lennox hi-efficiency modulating furnace with 98% AFUE. Though their quote included installing a new prefabricated condenser pad (the concrete slab under the condenser), the existing one made that difficult. They ended up putting the new condenser on a layer of rocks (like one might use in landscaping) to make a more level surface than the existing pad.

Cooling Unlimited was extremely helpful from the moment I called regarding problems with my boiler. I was able to schedule a technician to come in at noon the very next day (they offered to send someone that evening with full disclosure that it would be at overtime cost, but the next morning was fine with me.) Just after I called, they called back to let me know that there had been a cancellation in the schedule and offered to come even earlier in the day, which was even better for me since I had to take the morning off from work to deal with the repair. The next day, about 40 minutes into the one-hour window they quoted, Leo arrived. He examined my boiler and replaced the thermal couple that was no good. He went out to the truck to prepare the paperwork, but when he came back I reported the baseboards were still cold. He then spent at least another half an hour extracting air from the pipes (service on the boiler was LONG overdue - totally my fault). Even though he must have been here over an hour, he only charged me one hour of labor, which I thought was very decent. When he was done and as the heat started to come up, he took the time to explain what he had done and to give me pointers on how often I should have my boiler serviced moving forward. He also took the time to explain that the water temperature on my boiler had been set too low, how and to what temperature he had adjusted it to, and how I could adjust it myself in the future. We discussed how the rise in set temperature may raise my gas bill but - because of all the air that had been blocking up my pipes - the price may very well be balanced out because the system would now be working at optimal operation. Leo clearly was someone who took pride in his work (and I think was a bit dismayed that I had not taken care of my boiler properly before this). I will absolutely call Cooling Unlimited to come and repair and/or maintain my boiler or water heater in the future. They responded quickly and efficiently, and I am now toasty warm in my apartment.
Description of Work: My heat was not working, so Leo from Cooling Unlimited came out to service my boiler. Leo replaced the thermal couple which was bad, re-lit the pilot and purged air from the pipes.

My home was originally heated with oil, utilizing steam radiators spread across all rooms in the house. My house was cooled with window AC units. We decided to replace the entire heating and cooling system for the following reasons: (1) Less noisy: window AC units are loud and steam radiators clank and hiss loudly. (2) Comfort: with central AC, all rooms would be cooled, instead of just rooms with Windows units. (3) Energy efficiency: use less energy to heat home and water. Also the incentives (tax credit, rebates and loan) were wonderful to help us ease the burden on the wallet. (4) Space: the new system occupied far less space than the old oil furnace, radiators and oil tank. I shopped around, relying on Angieslist for my referrals. I chose to go with Cooling Unlimited because of the timely responses I was getting initially from the sales advisor, Mark. Other companies didn't seem to return phone calls as promptly as Mark did. It also helped that the pricing seemed very fair compared to other competitor's quotes. During Mark?s first visit, he brought up the idea of replacing my water heater with a new indirect water heater. At first I didn?t fully comprehend the benefits of it but it later became very obvious why it was a no brainer. Besides the fact that the indirect water heater saves energy and has a lifetime warranty, it also did not need to be vented through my chimney (which my old water heater did). Instead of investing (or wasting) money in a new chimney liner to comply with safety codes, I invested in a new indirect water heater. The guys (Mike and Sean) who performed the installation were very meticulous and worked very efficiently. They arrived early everyday to get started. The workmanship surrounding every newly installed equipment was wonderful. Mike made every effort to accommodate any requests that I made. They kept the house/work areas as clean as possible which I appreciated. I was extremely happy with their professionalism and their quality of work. Just fantastic! It?s nice to know that referrals from Angieslist really paid off here for me! After making final payment, Meghan at Cooling Unlimited compiled all the supporting documents that I needed for the various rebates and tax credits. She was very organized and thorough as she delivered the claim forms and documents to me. The package arrived with clear instructions on Post-It notes on what areas I needed to complete before submitting my claims. This made the "paper pushing" process very easy. I have utilized both components (cooling and heating) since the completion of the project. I was assured from Mark that if I had any problems with either my heating or cooling system within the first year, I was covered. When the heating was turned on for the first time in mid September, the hot air from the heating system didn?t seem hot enough. I placed a service call with Cooling Unlimited and they did address and resolve the issue in a timely matter. So far so good! If there was one complaint that I had to make about Cooling Unlimited, it would have to be that sometimes it would take several days to get responses from Mark, the sales advisor. I had to follow up with him a number of occasions on deliverables that he promised but it required me to chase him down for them. Mark was very responsive at the start but not so much later on. Mark was still always enjoyable to work with every time we connected. Overall my experiences with Cooling Unlimited have been very pleasant! I highly recommend them.

We obtained quotes from three different vendors that we found on Angies List. Cooling Unlimited gave us the best quote but also were the most responsive. Mark, our sales rep, was very prompt in responding to emails and phone calls, was very patient with our questions and concerns (I was pregnant and we wanted the work finished before the baby's arrival), and helped us pick the best units for our house. There was some miscommunication about the work dates that caused some stress but it worked out eventually. We were glad we had the AC units installed and savored the coolness all summer long.
Description of Work: Cooling Unlimited installed four Mitsubishi Mr. Slim AC units in our house.

Went well. My central heating system stopped working overnight. I called Cooling Unlimited in the morning. They set up the service for 1pm. The technician arrived right on time. He immediately identified the problem and solved it. He also helped me with getting my gas fireplace to start. In summary: they were very responsive, service was great, the technician was very polite and knowledgeable. About the price, I haven't shopped around much, but it seems pretty standard. I also had them solve a problem with my central AC last summer and that experience was positive as well.
Description of Work: Checked the heating system. Replaced the capacitator.

Scheduled an appointment during a heat wave and the service tech showed up on time. Spent a few hours testing the system and making repairs. Thought we had everything working correctly but after he left the system failed again. Called the main office and was promised someone would return that day. After not hearing back I called again and was told no one was available and they would schedule me as the first appointment for the next morning. A different, more senior service tech did show up as promised early the next morning. Some additional repairs were made and the system worked perfectly for the rest of the summer. Very professional outfit who were able to repair my system which has given other companies many problems.
Description of Work: Central AC unit tune-up. My air conditioning unit was malfunctioning and would not stay on, was pushing warm air and had very low air flow out of the vents.
