Estimated it would take 5 days to complete job. The work crews including plumber and electrician were on time and worked steadily and as quietly as possible. They put in a longer day on the 4th and finished up. They took care of the city inspection and helped me file for a pending rebate. They were careful and cleaned up after themselves. It's a month after they finished and with the recent cold weather I can see a marked difference from what I had as the new system keeps my home warm. I would hire them again and will have them do the maintenance on my system.

I contacted Cooling Unlimited in early winter. They promptly returned my call and scheduled an onsite visit to scope the project. Dennis was very knowledgeable - which is not a surprise as the owner of a small company with 20+ years in business. He answered my questions candidly and shared several ideas about which units could be used for the job. .After comparing to other quotes, we decided to go with Cooling Unlimited. We worked through a couple of contract details (which they were flexible on) and signed in early to mid November. We soon learned that the unit we agreed to use was out of stock. Since I have existing baseboard heat, I decided to wait for the unit to be back in stock. The back order lasted nearly 2 months and several times during that delay I called into the office to get a status check. If there is one area where I think they would slightly improve, it would be the communication front. While everyone was very pleasant and helpful, unless I involved Dennis, responses either didn't come or would be days later when originally promised to be hours. I understand businesses get busy so this is just a small area for improvement, not a deal breaker. And as I said, as soon as Dennis was involved, questions were immediately addressed. On the day of the install, the crew arrived promptly at the promised time. When they said 7:30, they were here at 7:30. I appreciated this very much. They were very respectful of my home and took great care to make sure the unit was installed cleanly and was level. This may sound like a small detail but so often contractors seem to take the "close enough is good enough" approach. The condenser unit outside the home was installed very cleanly and the lines were neat. They cleaned up well after the job and gave me an overview of the system. We've only had the heat on but so far, so good. Everything heats well even on 5 degree days. The sizing that Dennis recommended seems to be right on. Can't wait for summer to try out the cooling. The unit is nearly silent. If you are thinking about a ductless system, I can't recommend this enough based off of my initial impressions. Thank you guys for great work.

No complaints, but it was hard reaching them sometimes and getting accurate information. I also asked them to do a little extra work to hook up a gas dryer but was surprised at the charge. However, they did reduce that somewhat when I spoke to them about it.

I'd used Cooling Unlimited for years at my old house for just the Air Conditioning, but now in my new house I have forced hot air and AC so I can use them for everything. I think I have been a customer for about ten years. They are always punctual, thorough, and efficient.
Description of Work: Cooling Unlimited checked my heating system to prepare for the winter. My filter on my heater is in a really awkward spot and clearly the previous owners didn't have the filter changed often for that reason. They serviced the AC and the heater and pointed out some possible issues like some rusting.

The job took about four days to complete. There were a couple of communication issues in the beginning (a/c unit was not placed correctly outside) but were all rectified very quickly without complaint. Installing the duct work was a huge amount of work and they dealt with any unexpected issues very effectively. One of the first floor vents couldn't be placed where they wanted it to be because of the joists in the ceiling, but they quickly found a solution that was acceptable. We had some odd issues immediately after installation was completed due to a problem with air handler, but they responded very quickly and fixed it. We love our central a/c! I am giving them a B on quality only because the closets where they placed the duct work to access the first floor were not repaired after installation to actually be usable. We had to go in and reconfigure our shelves and find new ways to hang the bars. Also, where they had to cut through floors with carpeting to run the ducts, they did not secure the carpet to the floor around the duct work, so now it is bunching up a bit in places. Otherwise, we are thrilled with the results. We now have a very efficient unit that costs the same to run, if not less, compared to our TWO window units, and the house feels great in the summer.

Charlie Brown of Cooling Unlimited came out in late April and sent me an estimate promptly for installation of a Burham Alpine condensing (95% AFLUE) gas boiler. When I talked later with other HVAC experts, however, I learned that my 1970s baseboard convectors would not provide efficient enough heat exchange into the rooms to support a condensing boiler operating at low temperature. Mr Brown never mentioned this limitation. When I emailed him a few weeks late to ask for a second quote, for a convention (85% AFLUE) he never responded. Based on the installation cost differential for the condensing and conventional boiler I received from other providers, I'm guessing that Cooling Unlmited's estimate would been in the range of $6000-$7000, $2500-$3500 higher than the lowest big I received.

They did a great job. Our old system had illogical zones and a variety of zone valves. They installed the new boiler and hot water heater and completely reworked the hearing zones, working in tight places, to make an entirely coherent system. Also installed new thermostats. We needed a few adjustments after installation and they came and took care of them right away. We have had the system for a year now, and it has worked really well so far. We have signed up for their service contract.

I had a superlative experience with Cooling Unlimited, Inc. throughout the estimate and installation process. Charlie was the staff person who did the estimate, ordered the furnaces and scheduled the installation. His expert knowledge was clearly evident when he asked several questions during the estimate that another contractor hadn't mentioned (ex., the need for removal of some asbestos tape covering some pipes and calling National Grid to ensure that there was sufficient capacity in the gas line for this major project). Due to an opening in their schedule, the installation was able to be done earlier than I had anticipated (which I'm grateful for now that the cold weather has set in!) Mike, the foreman, and his crew worked tirelessly for three days, and Mike was very patient in answering my questions about the maintenance and functioning of the system. On the test run of the system, we realized there was a problem with an old pipe (unrelated to the new work), and I also had a great experience with the on-call service staff, who worked diligently to repair my old pipe. I couldn't be more thrilled with my new heating system and can highly recommend all the expert, friendly staff of Cooling Unlimited, Inc.!

Received 4 estimates. Cooling Unlimited was the middle choice because of 24/7 service. Arrived exactly on time . And the workers kept their work area very clean and removed their debris. Equipment used for the installation was top notch. I am very fussy concerning proper layout and neatness of the plumbing and In a few areas certain craftsman issues were noticed. There were a couple of initial boiler start up issues that were quickly corrected. One week later .... and all is well. Decision to do the work and selection of contractor was a good one. The office staff are very responsive and try to work around your schedule. This installation was done with many rebate incentives within a short time line for completion and there was great cooperation to get all done before the rebate officers ended. You cant go wrong with this company and will continue to use them .

First the rebates they said I was going to get ended being about half what they said, and the rebates where part of the overall price and part of the reason I went with them. Another issue I have, that makes me question how good they are is they put the main return in my master bedroom so you needed to leave the door open when the AC is on. When I complained and they came back, they put a smaller return in another room and it did help put it probably needed to be a little bigger. I really would have liked using the to maintain the system be I am not sure if they are the best choice.

Everything went very well. Cooling Unlimited's price quote was significantly lower than the other company from whom we obtained a quote. They were in and out in one week's time, as promised. They spent a lot of time and effort trying to determine whether they could pipe the system all the way to the first floor, but it was impossible due to the house's architecture. The work creates a lot of plaster dust as they put several small vents in the ceilings of each room, but the workers were very good about using dust clothes and cleaning up after themselves. It was extremely hot on the days they were crawling in the attic installing the equipment up there, but they were troopers about it. We've only had the system for a little over a week and, of course, the weather has cooled off now that it is September, but so far it is very effective. The system is very quiet, indoors and out. We are thrilled that we won't be hauling window units in and out anymore.

This provider does very high-quality work and will probably not be your cheapest quote, but after getting burned by a lower-caliber A/C installation in our prior condo, we didn't want to cheap out. They work fast -- the installation took two days -- and they are very professional and clean-up after themselves. A little background on the price. Initially, they came in a full $2500 more than our second-highest quote, but when I took a look, it wasn't an apples-to-apples comparison. They were offering an extra 1/2 ton system, a second return in the master bedroom, and had a better idea of where to situate the condenser; plus when I told them about the second quote, they came down in price and threw in an air cleaner for free. After their price reduction, I calculated I was being charged about an extra $1000 in labor over the other provider, which I was willing to pay to ensure this system doesn't give us any problems in the future.
Description of Work: Installed a new 2.5 ton American Standard Central A/C system and an air cleaner to cool the second floor of our house, which had no prior installation. The air handler and ducts were installed in the attic, with registers and returns built into our second floor ceilings. They installed an Air Cleaner, too, which I think is a must --- no more paying someone once a year to clean your ducts!

THE JOB: Installation went exactly as expected. Prompt arrival, no standing around waiting for anything. Went right to work and got the job done. The pair of installers obviously knew what they were doing. They did a nice, neat job with installing the lineset in particular and overall installation of the unit, condensate drainage, etc. They were pretty diligent in insulating the lineset as well, which is something a lot of contractors pay little attention to. Doing that poorly has no effect on the contrator and everything will still work fine, but you will simply pay more for energy if your refrigerant lines are not covered up properly with gaps at every turn and kink in the piping. Not being a professional, its one easy way to gauge the diligence of installation - when you see insulation slapped together at the last minute, be sure that all the other stuff is probably also "slapped together" and might fail you prematurely. Again, these guys did everything well THE PRICING: I got a total of 6 HVAC quotes from top-rated Angie's HVAC companies (both brand names and one-man shops). Cooling Unlimited not only came in with the best pricing for what I eventually chose to have done, but Kevin also provided me with several valid options with quotes and information on all of them. Despite the fact I only contacted the "top" contrators as rated on Angies, it was an absolutely obvious choice to go with Cooling Unlimited and I am happy I did.

Dennis came to our house and provided several versions of the estimate. He was very professional and knowledgeable, able to answer lots of questions and provide helpful suggestions. They came well recommend by a friend. They are focused on AC, which is unusual in New England. Dennis provided good advice and helped up figure out how best to balance our goals of quiet AC units that were less environmentally harmful with our desire for efficient cooling and heating for a competitive price. Cooling Unlimited's proposal was the most specific and well-reasoned of the estimates we obtained, and we selected them to do the work. On the whole, we are very pleased with the work that they did. There were some bumps along the way, but some of those (hot weather, old house, unpredictable permitting department) were not their fault. We would use them again and have recommended them to my husband's parents. Mike, the lead installation guy, was outstanding. Our house is old, and the conduits are either nonexistent or not well marked. Mike and his crew did a great job of scouting out chases and coming up with an installation plan that worked. They were very good at problem solving and about communicating with me. They were timely, reliable, and cleaned up well at the end of each day. We are very happy with the work that they did. Unfortunately, they were missing a critical piece of equipment for the upstairs (it had not yet arrived at the warehouse?), so Mike and his crew weren't able to complete that installation. The other crews they sent to complete the work were not as thorough or as professional or as technically savvy. As a result it took multiple visits to get the upstairs zone properly connected and running. That was a hassle, but it does work well now. We used MassSave financing, and Dennis said they would be willing to work with us on the necessary hoops. It became clear that they did not realize how much work that might require, but they followed through on their promise. Administratively, it was a bit of a challenge working with their office because they had staff turnover and it was hard to reach the people who needed to take care of certain parts of the paperwork. But eventually it got done. The permitting side was a bit of a nightmare, largely because Somerville is a nightmare when it comes to permitting. If you live in Somerville, I would recommend either obtaining the permits yourself (the Department is MUCH more helpful to Somerville residents) or using an HVAC company that knows the Somerville Building Department. That Department is inconsistent and makes things difficult for contractors not based here or known to them.
