He responded to my inquiry immediately. He showed up on time and on a weekend which was great. He said he would get a quote to me in a week. 2 weeks after I emailed and called his phone to leave a message. He got me the quote the following week. I then responded with questions about the quote and never heard back from him 3months later.
Description of Work: Had him come out for a quote on a bathroom and kitchen remodel.

His service was great, he was very trustful and when unforeseen things came up they were fixed quickly and correctly. We had a problem with my ceiling and he was able to fix it and make it look like the problem never existed. There is still a few small pieces of trim to be finished but I couldn't be happier with the level of communication and service.

Came with his plumber to give an estimate. Said it would be ready in 2 weeks. I enquired 3 weeks later. The estimate finally arrived 5 weeks after the initial visit, but didn't mention basic elements we discussed such as installation of fixtures and plumbing (toilet, etc.), tile and replacement window. I asked him to include missing items and re-send. The next version was still missing basic things like painting, etc. I outlined all the missing items. Weeks passed. I asked 2 or 3 times if he was still interested in the job. He always answered yes and assured me a revised, complete estimate was on the way. His last e-mail to me on 8/9/15 read "I'm working on the revision." That was 6 weeks ago.

I really wanted to have Gerry do the work on my dining room. Unfortunately we played a bit of phone tag to eventually get him out here to do an estimate. Once I had him out here it took an additional week and a half to get an estimate. We were prepared to go ahead with the work and I left an email and two voice messages to confirm that we wanted the work done. I never got a response back so I had to go with a different provider.

He had to cut out part of the existing stairs in order to build a landing. It didn't have one before, it had pie slice shaped stairs. I chose him because he does new stairs and remodels staircases. He also put in an additional railing. He also installed a post at the bottom of the staircase as recommended by the stair-lift people. The post looks like it was always there. The quality of the work is excellent. It really blends in.

He did a great job! He had to remove the floor and re-install new flooring. It was a big job and he had great skills and did a great job.
Description of Work: He renovated our attic. There was a small room in the attic that had a kitchen sink from many years ago. We had it converted into a small room we could use for storage. There was also a small separate part of the attic that only had isolation and he added walls.

The work was extremely well done. Gerry said that it would be 2 weeks before they could do the work, and that was the case. But they did show up on time: 2 weeks later. Through my fault some small parts for the stormdoor were missing. I found the missing parts shortly after Gerry and his assistant had hung the door and left. Gerry came back the next day and completed the work on the door for no additional charge. If I need any carpentry work done in the future, I will surely want them to do it.

In short, we trust Gerry and his work. We bought a "fixer upper" house with known (but repairable) structural issues. And so the adventure began. We chose Gerry after going through a list of contractors and getting estimates. Gerry was responsive from the beginning, and we got the sense that we'd be able to work well with him.We had Gerry do the necessary structural repairs first, then added usable stairs back to the basement. After that we went on to the kitchen, bathroom demolition, and all that comes with it. Gerry talked quite a bit with the subcontractors, which he works with on a regular basis, though he offered that we could always work with them directly if we wanted to. Its this type of flexibility combined with responsibility that I truly appreciated during the months that we worked together. We coordinated so many decisions, details, and plans that I kept a running spreadsheet, hitlist, and long term planning log of everything that had to be done! We'd talk first thing in the AM, he'd finish work on Saturday, we meet to go over the next phase of the project at 7 at night. Gerry worked hard to get jobs done and to keep things moving. One of the concerns we had prior to finding Gerry is what would happen when things didn't go to plan, and how it would be handled. When we did have concerns, Gerry met with us and talked us through the issue. Many times it was a small item that we just needed clarification on. When there really was a problem (with a job this large of course it happens), he fixed it and made it right. It was a huge relief to work with someone who could handle a problem, fix it and keep a good working relationship going at the same time. Gerry is a really good guy doing really good work. We plan to work with Gerry again for some other things.
Description of Work: Gut renovation of both kitchen and bathroom including: removal of layers of old flooring. leveling and installation of new subfloor. demolition and removal of old cabinetry, walls and old windows. installation of new windows including managing side task of asbestos shingle removal. small rotten wooden replacement. installation of new walls, cabinets. bringing in trusted contractors for plumbing, electrical, tiling, plastering. executed structural work based on structural engineers plans, including installing L brackets on basement floor joists, and load balancing improperly supported dormer in attic. new basement stairs. new basement secure door and frame. expanded single door opening to be double/french door opening between kitchen and dining room, including getting structural permits.

Gerard may be the nicest contractor we've ever met. It's just him and one other guy, which I preferred over a huge team of "subcontractors" swarming your home. But that also means that your project will take longer than expected. But his prices are reasonable, he's very pleasant to work with, he listens to you and strives to understand exactly what you want done. And at the end of the day he wants to hear your opinions and is willing and open to changing anything you don't like. As the project progressed, my husband and I could see that certain aspects of what we wanted wouldn't work and Gerard was really good at helping us decide alternate designs. My husband and i hope to use Gerard for all of our future carpentry jobs. We highly recommend Gerard M. Horne Carpentry, just understand that because it's just the two of them your project start date may be delayed and the project may take longer than you anticipate. But he more than makes up for that with his kindness, attention to detail, and quality of work.
Description of Work: We have a very haphazard concrete steps-slab-steps-slab-step entrance to our main entrance wooden steps that became very tricky to maneuver with our new baby and car seat. You have to step down, then walk across the top step and then step back up to get to the garage. My husband sprained his ankle while carrying the baby, so we knew it was finally time to make the whole area safer (and more attractive since the concrete was cracking in many places. Gerard and one other guy did all the work, which included two sets of stairs with platforms connecting the original two sets of stairs as well as the new sets. Additionally, we needed to replace the delapidated ramp to the second story of our garage, so Gerard built two more platforms connecting to the second story of the garage. What was nice was that we didn't have to rip up the existing concrete, which would have added significantly to the cost. He covered up all the ugly concrete with the new decking.

No start & no finish he never showed up.
Description of Work: I called spoke with them made an appt. for him to look at my stairs for Saturday, 11/19 for 1pm and he never showed up for the appt. He told me he had another appt in Brockton so 1pm would be better for him. I paid $ 35.00 for this site to use to find a Finished Carpenter for this project. After my stairs I was going to totally remodel my kitchen. It was a waste of money. Found someone through my Hairdresser, her brother who is a finished carpenter, who called me. made an appt and showed up. I hired this person and he now has the job of remodeling my kitchen. He has completed my stairs has done an excellant job and I will not use this site again. The above price was what I paid to totally remove 12 stairs and top floor refinish in red oak, stain & paint. Sorry I ever joined...It was a waste of time. I used someone that was refered to me by my Hairdresser. I should of asked her first and paid her the $35.00 dollars. I have plumbers & electricians in my family just needed a Finished carpenter.

In August when I was thinking about kitchen renovations, I sent Gerry an email through Angie's list, and he promptly wrote back. he came out to the house within a week to look at the kitchen and talk to us about the work to be performed. He was punctual, and very thorough. He spent a good deal of time with us looking at everything, making suggestions, helping us figure out which things we could leave out and how we could cut costs. Within a week he emailed a quote. It then took me a while to get organized, about 6 weeks. So when I contacted him to schedule the job, he wanted to come out and look again, which I thought was a great idea. He talked me through how to order new cabinets at Home Depot, what to watch out for, etc, and even when I was over at Home Depot ordering things, I gave him a call to ask for his opinion on some things, he was super helpful. The cabinets and the new appliances were delivered. Gerry and his assistant came a few days later to do the installation and removal. it took them longer than they thought, I think they had a hard time with running a new electricity line to the kitchen from the basement for the new microwave, because our building is rather old and tricky. Gerry thought he could install the dishwasher himself, but that did not go so well, he was a bit hesitant about forcing one of the parts that seemed too tight. So the plumber had to make an extra trip to install the new dishwasher, and that turned into extra two trips because nobody had noticed the pipe in the back of the old dishwasher that kept the new one from fitting into place. The extra plumber visits pushed the price up, which I guess I should have expected, but it ended up costing more than Gerry initially had told me it would. But other than this, everything went great. Gerry also helped to put an extra kickboard in front of the dishwasher, and helped to cement up some holes in the kitchen. Everything now looks and works great, and they did an excellent job. Very helpful. I highly recommend him, and would definitely work with him again.
Description of Work: Gerry and his assistant removed the old cabinets in our kitchen, installed the new ones. They also installed a microwave/fan above the stove. Gerry also organized for a plumber to install a dishwasher and install a new sink and faucet. I had selected a quartz/granite counter top from Home Depot, so that installation was done by Home Depot's people, but the plumbing work was done by Gerry's plumber.

I think that I received a coupon from them. The issue with them was with their back up. I selected some other service provider because their price was high compared to the service provider who is doing the work right now. They came out right away and they were very nice. They could not get to the work for eight weeks. I liked the interaction but I was not crazy about their price and their timeline. I was relatively happy with them. I would absolutely consider them for another estimate in the future.
