Description of Work: Annual Oil Burner tune-up, Oil barrel inspection & filter change, vacuum out ash from fireplace and determine system efficiency. The technician was on time for the appointment, knocked at the front door, greeted both me and my dog who he remembered from last year's appointment. It took just over an hour for everything to be done. He went over what he did and how it affected the efficiency rating on the tag.

Scott Williams is very responsive to emergency situations (we have one tonight, the night before Thanksgiving, needing a boiler repair). We have been customer since moving into our current home, nearly 17 years now. Fast to respond, nice to deal with, and the technicians are great, very professional and knowledgeable. Scott Williams have upgraded our boiler, repaired the system over time, do regular maintenance, and have installed a great high velocity air conditioning system when we put an addition on the house. Highly recommended...

I'm trying, for the second time, to update my review - I hope Angie's List will allow it this time. I'm very tired of Ken Williams' repeated calls. Last fall I bought a house that uses heating oil. I was assigned Scott Williams through the Mass Energy Consumers Alliance. (The cost savings is minimal - a few cents per gallon.) I appreciated that Scott Williams was willing to deliver less than a full tank because I could not afford to fill it (over $1000). My tank was half-full to start and I purchased 100 gallons. When the tank ran dry, I purchased another 100 gallons. I was shocked to discover that I needed to refill the tank so quickly. I was using the equivalent of a full 270-gallon tank in less than 4 weeks in a very warm winter (it snowed twice, and melted quickly). The house is only 1000 square feet, with upgraded window replacements and 5and quot; of insulation in the attic. The thermostat is new and the furnace is old but has an 81-83% efficiency rate. I set the thermostat at 60 degrees after the first delivery of oil and lowered it to 50 degrees after the second oil purchase (very uncomfortable - almost unbearable). Still, after the first 2 oil deliveries, it was costing me over $700 per month to keep this small house at 50 degrees! I don't know anyone else who spends this much. When I complained to Scott Williams (spoke with Ken Williams), he sent a technician who found an accurate oil gauge, no oil leaks and a furnace with 83% efficiency. I purchased 100 gallons one more time, and this last time, in the same circumstances, it lasted almost twice as long. This is what made me suspect I'd received less than 100 gallons those first 2 deliveries. I first called Mass Energy to report my concerns, but was assured (without an investigation) that Scott Williams was an honest company and I was wrong to have those suspicions. I was told that Mass Energy has no formal process for handling or even recording complaints like mine. To me, this suggested that Mass Energy, while identified as a and quot;consumers alliance, and quot; actually serves the interests of it's oil providers. I phoned the Department of Weights and Measures and was told that someone would look into the situation (not a formal investigation). The person I spoke with also seemed incredulous at the suggestion that I might have been shortchanged on those first 2 oil deliveries. Evidently, citizens seldom complain about this. Recently, Ken Williams phoned, asking that I change my Angie's List review. I told him I had no response from the Department of Weights and Measures, and no explanation for the outrageous heating oil bills. 2 days later, the Department of Weights and Measures responded to Mr. Williams' request and sent me a letter stating that they did, 4 months ago, investigate Scott Williams (a surprise inspection). They found absolutely no discrepancy and I have to believe that I did, actually, receive the full amount of oil that I paid for. The following day (at Ken Williams' request), the previous oil company sent me a report of several years of heating oil use by the previous owner, a 95-year-old woman who passed away the winter before. Apparently, she had been using about 100 gallons every 2-3 weeks (last year, $1 less per gallon). I can't fault the Scott Williams company for shortchanging me. I can only wonder how such a small house can use so much oil (at 50-60 degrees) and I can complain that heating oil companies charge so much for a basic necessity. I'm very upset to think of the previous owner, trying to keep warm on a fixed income and I'm a little panicked to think about how I'm going to afford to keep warm next winter.
Description of Work: 3 times, I requested 100 gallons of heating oil from this company.

Response from Scott Williams Oil
A late response to this review...we serviced the home for the previous owner. They system was old, and we had recommended replacing it. But as the house was up for sale that work was not done. When Ms. [Member Name Removed] moved in, apparently unaware of what it cost to heat a home, she was shocked. While the usage was very much in line with previous history we acknowledge her complaint and sent a technician to look at her system, which was found to be running as well as could be expected. Not satisfied with that action on our part she complained to the State Weights and Measures Division who showed up at our office to test the vehicle that had made the deliveries. The inspectors found that the meter was sealed and was completely accurate. The reality of this is that Ms. [Member Name Removed] had only three 100 gallon deliveries that season until she cancelled her account. Note that 100 gallons is basically 3/8 of a tank. Her deliveries came on 12/22, 1/25, and 2/10. I believe that she asserts that a delivery that came later in the year by another company lasted longer - of course it did! If it came in March as the winter's cold was abating it absolutely would. I'm not sure why she can't understand that. Bottom line is this home has an older heating system, is poorly insulated, has a lot of glass, and is near the water (with its high winds) so it's not unexpected that it would use more than a similar home without the same energy conservation challenges. As a new homeowner she was unaware of the costs and, in my opinion, over reacted to them. It's frustrating to get a poor grade when we did everything we possibly could to assuage her concerns.
