Dave purchased the new fans and thermostats and then set up a day to install them. It was about a week from the time he first inspected the fans to the date he installed them (Maty 6, 2014). In early July, I checked the fans and noticed that one of them was working fine and the other was not. I waited a few more days for a good hot day and checked again several times. Same thing, one working and one not. I called Dave on Tuesday July 8th and sent him an email. He responed immediately via email that he was on vacation, but could look at it when he came back on Saturday July 12th. He arrived Saturday morning as planned and fixed the problem immediately. It problem was simply that the thermostats were not in sync, so one would turn on, cool the attic, and the second was never reaching the temperature required to activate it. The fix was very quick, and of course, there was no charge.
Description of Work: Dave replaced 2 attic fans and thermostats that were not working. He first attemped to determine if it was the motors or thermostats, but quickly determined that it was better to replace than attempt to repair, since the fans were over 25 years old.

Dave was extremely professional and efficient. Not only did he complete the work requested, which looks great by the way, he was also able to identify and fix some wiring the was done incorrectly years and years ago. He patiently explained all this to me as he worked so I understand the process. And I found his fees to be very fair. In addition to the job itself, he had worked around my schedule as needed (which can be difficult at times) and was very prompt in returning all calls and communications. If there was an "A+" category here on Angie's list I would give him that. Do I plan on using his services again? Absolutely!

I sought a new electrician because my wonderful guy of 20 years retired. I interviewed many people, and I chose Dave. He seemed very knowledgeable and professional at our first meeting, and agreed to be our new electrician. We walked through the house, and he made a list of our needs. He said he would call me with an appointment date. The next day, he even referred a plumber friend of his to me for a bath remodeling project, and I called him to thank him for his referral. He never called me back to schedule our agreed-to electrical work.. I called him 3 times, each time requesting the courtesy of a call back--one way or another. In my final call, I asked him to please leave a message---particularly if he had decided not to take on our business which, by then, seemed pretty obvious to me but re-interviewing electricians was timely, he had taken plenty of my time (and his, apparently), and I was hoping not to have to do that again. Despite my telephonic pleas for a return message, he never called me back. I have had my own business for over 20 years, and I can tell you that I would NEVER treat a client in this manner--it's rude and unprofessional. For someone who seemed like such a nice professional guy, I was quite shocked by the way in which our engagement was handled. I do see other reviews noting a lack of timely response and so forth but it's just downright ignorant to commit to an engagement, spend much time with someone setting it up, and then never show up or reschedule or let the person know otherwise. I was very disappointed. He owes me an apology--that's the professional thing to do.
Description of Work: Nothing because he never showed up for the job.

Dave did a tremendous job. Not only did he do everything we asked him to professionally, with expertise and on time, he was very courteous, knowledgeable, flexible and a real problem solver. We found Dave on Angie's List and are so glad that we did! We have a huge attic rewiring project in our future and Dave is the only electrician we'd call to tackle that for us.
Description of Work: We moved into a house built in 1900 and asked Dave to come in and completely rehab the wiring and electrical system, including adding in a new circuit board, adding a bunch of new and relocated outlets and powerlines throughout the house and to our garage and installing a bunch of lighting fixtures. We also had him run a new line into our mudroom with himinstalling a baseboard heating unit.

He was very busy and at first he didn’t respond quickly but then he did contact me. He had a lot of business to manage. He agreed that he would come down and do each fan at a time. He would call me up like on a Wednesday and tell me that he could come on Saturday for a fan. He has been very professional and explained everything to me we agreed on. Every time I have any problem, I will call him. He went out of his way to accommodate my needs.
Description of Work: We used DPH Electric for ceiling fans. One of the fans smelled like burning rubber so I decided to replace all 3 of them.

I left a vm for Dave on Monday June17th indicating we were interested in being a new customer and that I needed 2 bathroom wall lights switched out and that our ceiling fan at times smelt like the motor was burning. I also requested information about what his hourly rate was, and if he was available to do the job (and if so when). I did not hear back from him so I called 2 days (June 19th) later and he answered the call. Said he would definitely do the job, we talked about price and he indicated that he could come this Sat do to do job, but needed to check with his wife and would call me back around noon that day to confirm a time for June 22nd. I expressed that if he wasn't able to come Saturday, then let me know what other dates the following week (June 24th) he had available and what times. He never called back. I called AGAIN on Friday, June 21st asking to confirm whether or not he was coming tomorrow and if so what time. I indicated that if he was not coming to call back with his availability for the following week. I have YET to hear from him and it is June 24th.
Dave did an excellent job with the 2 projects we had at our home. Everything was completely professional and very well done. He took pride in his work and keeping everything neat and clean. His rates are very reasonable and he did the projects in a reasonable amount of time. He also made sure we used the Eco-friendly bulbs in our new lights ! We will be using him for any future needs.

Called Mr Hanley, got voice mail and left message. This was close to weekend and we didn't hear back but didn't worry because of his business hrs . We hoped that if he was busy he would call us back and let us know the following week. We didn't hear from him so called after couple days to try again. This time he returned call, saying he had tried to call us but had a problem getting through. In any case he was busy on another job and would see if he could come by. We haven't heard any more from him so will look for another Electrician.

DPH did what I consider in my opinion to be one of the cardinal sins of contractors. They did not respond to me after I left a message on their voice mail on a Friday. I had lost power to part of my house. This was not a major problem, but I would have liked to have had DPH acknowledge my call just out of courtesy . Finally by Monday, I called another contractor who promptly called me back and fixed the problem that day.

Response from DPH Electric
Dear Mr. [member name removed], I am very sorry that I was unable to call you back as promptly as you would have liked. Please know that I'm fully committed to meeting all of my valued Angie's List customers' needs as swiftly as I can, inclusive of prompt call backs. I understand how important your service needs are, and I respect that deeply. With that said, my targeted goal has always been to try and return all calls within 48 business hours (whenever possible). I am sorry for not being able to help you, and just as sorry for losing out on the business. Please know that although my records show that you called on a Friday, I didn't even have a chance to call you back on the first business day after your call (Monday) before you posted your dissatisfied review. Unfortunately, responding within 24 hours of a call isn't always something I can commit to. Even though I've won the Angie's List Super Service Award these past three years, I'm certainly not too proud to accept the fact that I can always find ways to improve upon my business. Thank you for the input and for providing me with the impetus to improve myself in this area. Best regards, Dave Hanley - DPH Electric

Everything went very smoothly, from initial contact to quote to completing the project. DPH contacted me about a project I had on hold to see if I was going through with it. I had hired Dave for another project before, which had gone very smoothly as well. I didn't have the budget for the full project but enough for the closet lights. Dave came out to adjust the quote. He came when he said he would come, gave a reasonable quote, and then did the work within the time period. He even came out a second time to check on his work. Overall, a very positive experience. And the closet lights work great. Only regret is on my end, where I should have had a double light installed in the master bedroom closet instead of a single. Dave installed perfectly what I asked.
Description of Work: DPH installed a closet light in both my master bedroom and 2nd bedroom.

We hired DPH Electric to remove some knob and tube wiring in our 1920's house. Our electrical system had *mostly* been upgraded over the years, but there was some remaining knob and tube in the attic and exterior walls. Since we wanted to have cellulose insulation blown in through the MassSave program, removing the knob and tube was required first. I had no idea how this could possibly be accomplished without making a huge mess of our house, but somehow, Dave was able to do the rewiring without making any big (or even small!) holes in our walls or ceilings. He worked quickly, cleaned up at the end of each day, and was easy and pleasant to interact with. His pricing was in line with other estimates. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Dave again for any electrical project.

Dave was very professional. His was methodical, which if you are dealing with electrical work is good ! We were very pleased with Dave's quality of work and his price. We plan to use him in the future.

Dave Hanley provided us excellent service from the first day he came by to review our needs, to the day he finished, and beyond, telephoning us just the other day to be sure we called him immediately should hurricane Sandy cause us any problems. When we first contacted him, we were unfamiliar with which generator would be right for our needs. Dave took the time to discuss all of our generator options as well as our power upgrade. He was punctual and meticulous. As I write this, hurricane Sandy is bending tree limbs outside our window and we feel safe in the knowledge that if our power goes out, our new generator and power upgrade will keep us comfortable thanks to Dave Hanley..

I had already been without hot water for several days when a plumber came to install a new water heater on a Saturday afternoon. To my dismay, that didn't solve the problem. I called Dave Hanely because he had been to my home recently to provide an estimate for a rewiring job. Dave had been very professional and patient with my questions when he came to do the rewiring estimate, so he was the first electrician I thought of when I needed this urgent hot water heater repair. I contacted Dave on Monday, and he offered to come by the next morning. When it turned out that another job prevented him from coming on Tuesday morning, Dave was very apologetic and arranged to come on Wednesday (he later discounted the price of the job due to this delay). He arrived promptly early in the morning, and quickly found what the problem was with the very old wiring to the water heater. He had to install a new circuit breaker and since I had to get to work for a meeting, I allowed Dave to continue working in my home alone and to let himself out. This indicates the high level of comfort and trust I felt with Dave, even though this was his first job with me. When I came home that evening I found the work completed and everything neat and clean, and I was able to enjoy a hot shower. When I received the bill, I saw that Dave had done the work for me at cost (only charging for the stock and material used and a discounted rate for his time) to make up for my having to go without hot water on the Tuesday that he had hoped to fit me in. This was very generous of Dave given that I had called him on Monday as a new customer asking for urgent service, and his making the time to help me on Wednesday morning was more than reasonable. He happened to be very busy with other jobs that week, and was certainly not obligated to make time for my small job at all. In sum, Dave Hanely provides excellent, timely and professional service at a fair price. He goes out of his way to help customers and is very courteous and conscientious. I highly recommend DPH Electric!
Description of Work: The ten-year-old electric hot water heater in my basement stopped working, and when a plumber installed a new one, he found that electricity was not getting to the water heater. Dave Hanely came to figure out what was wrong and to fix it. This is what he did: -Troubleshoot existing hot water tank wiring; found to be inoperative and defective -Demo existing (defective) wiring and replace with Contractor provided new wiring -Provide and install new, proper sized circuit breaker and install into existing electric panel -Install new wiring at Hot water tank and make all necessary electrical connections

My experience with Dave at DPH Electric was extremely good and professional. Dave showed up in time, and got right to work. We had gone over the projects on the phone and Dave knew exactly what needed to get done. He was hoping to get it done in 1 day, but a family emergency came up and he had to leave with 2 projects left. He made sure to call me a few days later and set up a time later that week to come back to finish the job. All the work done was very professional and he always cleaned up after himself. It was a great experience and I would recommend Dave to anyone that is in need of electrical work done.

We had another great experience with DPH Electric. Our house is more than 60 years old, and almost nothing has been upgraded. In addition to old wiring, our walls and ceilings are made of a concrete plaster that is extremely difficult to cut and makes a huge mess. We were switching bedrooms for our daughter, and her new room had no light fixture and outlets that made us nervous. Dave came and assessed the job, then he was able to fit us in on short notice to make sure the work was done when we needed it. The new light fixture is exactly how we wanted it. Dave and his team were able to put the new wiring in with only a small amount of cutting into the wall, which was great. They even moved a bunch of junk in our attic in order to access the room in the least disruptive way. There was not a speck of plaster dust in the house. The room looks great. We got exactly what we wanted, when we needed it, at a very fair price. We would absolutely use DPH Electric for any future work!

It went startlingly well. "startlingly" because combining three different worksites, three different gas, electrical, plumbing and wiring challenges is an invitation to disaster. I wouldn't have gone ahead with anybody I didn't trust absolutely -- and I was completely justified. Dave Haney was done work for us before -- but this involved not just electrical work, but contractorial responsibilities: finding and handling the delivery of the generators, organizing the plumbing, handling the electrical, etc., etc. And a lot of it with me out of the country. You asked for do's and dont's? First: find the right person, not only trustworthy, not only skilled, but somebody with whom you can talk -- who will keep you informed. AND: somebody who thinks on their feet, is capable to thinking not only outside, but all around the box. Dave didn't just drop a generator somewhere and hook it up; he was very helpful in the siting, design, padwork, interior electrical controls, etc., etc. I am a very happy customer -- mostly because I have no melodramatic tales to tell. No surprises, no sudden rise in costs, just excellent work. In sum: it went really well.
Description of Work: Three households were to be equipped with emergency generators, in the case of power interruption. Dave Haney researched a wide variety of sources, as did I, and Dave came up with a very good price for the three generators. Then he oversaw the basic electrical work, sub-contracted the necessary plumbing work, installed each of the generators, and performed a complete test series to ensure function. I was out of the country for some of the work period, and we remained in contact via email. Dave Haney was extraordinarily responsible, kept me in the loop, and handled all the permitting and ancillary headaches. Two of the homes have municipal gas, and therefore presented relatively few problems -- if you consider installing generators no big deal. However, the third home does not have a gas line, so it was necessary to install tanks of gas, a fairly complex linkage system, and a more complex set of electrical problems. Dave handled the entire installation -- did the testing and all three are now up and running (if necessary).

Dave was terrific. We had multiple small electrical project to do around the house and he worked us into his schedule over a period of several weeks. He was professional, thorough, and provide a high quality job. He check in with us when a particular task turned out to be more difficult than expected due to lack of access to the wiring and ensured we were comfortable with the additional effort before moving forward. He always kept his workspace clean, and made the extra effort to keep dust and debris off our belongings. He even plastered holes in our ceiling leftover by our previous (and less thorough) electrician. We found Dave's prices fair and reflective of the overall high quality of his work. I would not hesitate to recommend Dave and we will certainly be using him for any future electrical needs.
Description of Work: Various home electrical projects including: installed two recessed lights, installed overhead lights in two closets, switched out two ceiling light fixtures, installed large chandelier in main stairwell, rewired two switches to work off one, installed two dimmer switches, uninstalled doorbell, replaced 2 gang with single gang box.

I called on a Thursday and left voice mail. Dave called the following Tuesday. He apologized for not responding earlier; he'd been on vacation with his family. I explained why I needed an electrician. He asked questions--size of current kitchen fixture, location and color of switch in dining room, set-up of switches for stairway, etc. He gave a price estimate. Dave arrived two days later, on time. I showed him the three problem areas. He told me what he planned to do and brought in his equipment. After finishing in the kitchen and dining room, he thoroughly examined the fixture, switches and wiring for the stairs. He explained the set-up to me, making sure I understood the problem. He couldn't configure the lighting the way I'd hoped but offered an alternative. I appreciate his wilingness to explain the situation and his honesty. He 'd used a drop cloth in the kitchen, over the sink. Before he left, he made sure he cleaned up there and in the dining room. I am very happy with the work he did. Dave is personable and professional.
Description of Work: Dave removed an old fluorescent light in the kitchen and installed a new fixture. He replaced a switch for a light in the dining room. He examined the existing light fixture and wiring for the basement stairs to determine how it could be improved.
