For three weeks I thought everything was fine. Then I changed my very busy background to a solid color and noticed a ring in the center of my screen. Apparently the pixels were flawed. I didn't know what to do, and in the meantime we were having a leaking ceiling in the kitchen, so I was distracted from the issue. Then, about a week later, (today, 7-17-2013), I called Adam (aka Ry Pril) about the ring and to let him know the part he gave me was defective. He asked me to send him a picture and I did. When we next spoke, he told me he would call "Apple" ( he kind of hesitated when he said the name) and see what they could do for him. Things got worse. The day we spoke was a hot day, at least 97 degrees. When I got home after some errands, the plastic cover to my screen had fallen off. The glue that had held it on was all sticky. I immediately stuck the plastic back on. At that point I immediately called Adam. I said that when he did the original repair, he had charged me for a new top, but this was obviously either a refurbished top or a knock-off. He told me that he was upset and would call the "vendor." Then he called back and informed me that he thought the vendor provided him with a 90 day warranty and that was his understanding when he first worked with them 3 years ago, but they claimed that they had sent him a message by mail to the effect that it was now only a 30 day warranty. Then he said that he felt terrible so he would at least glue the top back on for me at no charge. I told him that I had bought a new screen top and that is what I expected to get. He made no commitment to do anything more for me. I spoke with Apple. Their rep, Abdul, told me that Pepperell Computer is not Apple certified, and an Apple certified technician cannot properly operate out of a store without it being certified. He also expressed doubt that one of their parts would behave that way. He also said that Apple provides 90 day support on their parts. After this, Adam called me back up. He wanted me to come in so he could open up my computer and take a picture of the cable. Somehow seeing the cable would help him. He also told me he was going to go with another vender now that this had happened. (What, not Apple?) We agreed that Saturday morning would be a good time for me to come in with the computer. To make a long story short, there was no way I was going to trust Adam or let him touch my computer. I ended up taking it to the Apple Store at the mall. In their opinion, the top of the laptop was not replaced. A new piece of plastic was glued on the old top. They wouldn't touch it because it had been tampered with by an unauthorized repairman. They directed me to Brinestone in Amherst, NH, who were incredibly wonderful, capable people. They helped me get a new top from Apple for free and charged only $50 for installation.
Description of Work: On 6-3-2013 I brought two Macs into Pepperell Computer Repair. Microphones didn’t work when plugged into Mac A, and Mac B had a badly cracked screen cover, but the underlying screen was functioning properly. The on-site technician (who said he was not Mac certified) checked the connection to microphone on Mac A, got it working by putting in a little stuff, then said he needed to keep it to show the Mac certified technician named Adam so he could check if it was "really working." On mac B, the glass covering the screen was broken. PCR claimed that its technician, who I learned was Adam, was certified by Apple to repair their computers. In fact, when I saw Adam, he told me of all the trouble and expense he went to in order to maintain his certification, the continual expensive testing, etc. I explained that I wanted the screen repaired. Adam told me that I could not get a new piece of glass to cover the screen. I would have to get a whole new top to the computer, because Apple only sold them that way. He explained that the glue Apple uses is so strong, it is impossible to separate the glass from the screen without damaging the unit. I would have to get a new screen. He would also get me a new spring to attach it with. I saw a mac pc monitor later at PCR with the glass detached, and I thought it was funny, but told myself that monitor screens might be different than laptop screens. I paid for the screen top for mac B and the work done on mac A. (I had to insist on getting a receipt for the part.) Then I brought in mac B when the part came in. Adam got it repaired promptly and returned it to me.
