Great work, took the time to do exactly what I asked. Always on time and kept work area clean. Amazing work ethic, made sure job was perfect! Will use again.
They did an excellent job. It was an insurance job so had its share of headaches and bumps, but Norm was very professional and helped me navigate every step. His work was 110%, both exterior and interior. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I will hire him for any jobs.
Description of Work: Roofing and interior work from water damage.
We encountered lots of challenges with problems with our house, with the insurance company, and with outdated code issues, but Norman always came through. Norman worked with us every step of the way, including guiding us in dealing with the insurance company. Once we had dealt with all the unexpected things, we were able to use Norman to make some elective changes, putting on an addition, and renovating the kitchen. We now wake up every morning to a beautiful, safe, and comfortable home. Norman demonstrated numerous strengths through our process. He understands local codes, architectural and structural principles, has an excellent sense of aesthetics, has high standards, works hard, and takes personal pride in his work. If something goes wrong, he fixes it. If he doesn’t know something, he does the research to find out solutions. He listened and understood when decisions required more thought or more information. When outdated code requirements about insulation posed a dilemma, he worked with us to find a solution that made sense, and still met the code requirements. He provided sane stability when we were coping with the emotional panic of discovering all that was wrong with our house that we’d no idea about when we bought it, despite having had all the evaluations. He respected our privacy, maintained appropriate boundaries, but connected with us in a significant way. He helped us maintain a sense of humor. Norman had told us when we first hired him, that in his experience, contracting clients ended up being like family, and he was right. Someone working on your home when you are living in it requires a degree of closeness and boundaries. We have come to rely on him, and we feel connected to him and his family. We are indebted to him, and hope he continues to perform his craft in this area, because we know we will continue to have more projects, as time goes on.
Description of Work: We first hired Norman Jacques to work on extending the roof on our house in an attempt to prevent further water damage to our home after we had had damage from ice dams. What began as a fairly small job became one enormous and continuing project after another as problems were discovered with mold, rot, and code issues (including that all the windows on the second floor were missing headers, and several posts were inadequate). We ended up having to replace all the windows, rebuild some wall areas, replace rotted beams, repair some problematic plumbing, and redo the siding.

I would give them A+++. They’re very thorough. He went above and beyond. He made sure that he did it the right way. He made sure that things were level. He’s meticulous about his work. He’s very precise. He’s very meticulous. In some ways I would say protectionist. I would even go as far as to say anal retentive. That’s just the kind of worker he is. He likes it to be right. Every other contractor who has ever walked into my house has been in awe and been like oh my god who did your framing. Holy crap, this is like wow… This is like immaculate. They just can’t believe it because they usually don’t see work like that. That’s how good it is. He does his best to work with the customers. He wants to make sure that they get what they want, but sometimes he always very much, he’s very high energetic and he’s very much on the go, sometimes things are missed or forgotten if they aren’t written down because he’s got one of those hyper type, because he’s so energetic, personalities. So, sometimes things can just be forgotten, not intentionally in any way but it just gets kind of looked over or, I don’t remember you saying that. It’s maybe a very small thing or to fix something or alter it because he didn’t remember it. Then there could be some small frustrations due to that because it wasn’t clearly stated or he didn’t remember that, that was discussed. I would say to make sure that everything is definitely put down in writing always and as clearly a plan put down so that you know what’s going to be happening any time anything discussed because he’s got so much going on with many different jobs that it can be easily forgotten, especially with large projects and even small ones. There’s been a couple times where he’s gotten upset, because there’s been a breakdown in communication, and he’s just walked off the job. But it’s better than blowing up at the customer so in some instances I actually think that was props on his, but you can look at as bad because he walked away, but I actually looked at as a good thing that he didn’t blow up and he knew when to walk away and get some air, and say you know what I’ll come back. So in one way you can look at that as bad and in another way, you can look at that as he knew his limits. He walked away when he should have. You can look at two ways in a sense. I will use him again. I trust him and I respect him and he’s going to give it to straight up and honestly and he’s not going to tell you things that aren’t true. If you need it then he’s going to be honest with you about it. He’s not going to sell you something you don’t need. He’s not one of those people.
Description of Work: I’ve used Jacques Builders. They did framing.

Had estimate and emergency stabilization done only. Project is yet to be completed.
Description of Work: Norm responded on the same day to my request for an estimate to rebuild a porch. He was informative about the dangerous situation in which my house was left by a contractor who walked off the job. He presented me an estimate that same evening and his price seems more than fair for what he plans to do. Two evenings later, he came back to stabilize the porch until he is able to start the project. He asked another customer to hold off on a less urgent job while he will tackle my porch. Norm is very serious about meeting codes and about the ethics of construction work. But he also has a great sense of humor and is most enjoyable to chat with. I look forward to having him complete my work in the near future.

Short lived - he quoted and then we simply lost touch. After repeated attempts to connect he just couldn't make time to do my job. What do say to something like that? He had a larger project in the city and that was taking up all his time. Not sure if he got over his head with time management but I know it never worked itself out.
Description of Work: Unable to connect in a timely way, he was simply spread too thin and even getting his quote was a job. I hear he does nice work but I guess I won't know seeing how it's nearly impossible to get him on a job.

Description of Work: This guy had a trailer/workshop parked across the street for several months doing some renovations. The day he was leaving I asked him to come in and look at some work we wanted done. We went around the house and talked about lots of little pieces of work that need doing. He talked a good game, making prolific notes and offering suggestions here and there. He said that he would have workers come do parts of the work as they became available between other jobs. Sounded good to me.He said he'd get back to us with an estimate. That was the last we saw or heard from him! He never called and didn't respond to a voice-mail. Guess you can't get bad marks for work you don't do!!

We work hard to stay in contact with our customers and our potential customer but sometimes the ball is dropped. Overall the project went well. Norm and his crew at Jacques Builders were extremely helpful and flexible. They were willing to let me cut costs by doing some of the work myself even offering me a crash coarse in things like taping which I decided it was better to let them do. They are flexible and the show up. When I lost my original carpenter they came in and without a lot of time to give me were able to fit me in here and there to keep my project going until more time opened up for them and they could button things up. One thing I have learned during my many renovations is to be clear about what you want and write it down so there are fewer misunderstandings. Norm read my notes and answered all my questions. I look forward to having them back to do my kitchen. When I met Jacques Builders in 2007 at a home show I got a good feeling and knew I would work with them at some point. It's not easy finding a contractor you can trust or one that truly cares about you and your project.
Description of Work: Jacques Builders helped me out when my original carpenter decided he didn't want to show up. They finished my bathroom, did any carpentry work that it still needed before drywalling it. They also installed my medicine cabinet and shower doors although I don't think they would do that again. They also put up some new ceilings for me in a few of my rooms over old cracking plaster and finished with crown molding. They look great. They finished building out my closet and rehung the doors. It was a lot of misc things that needed to be done at that time and coming into an existing job is never easy. They also were able to find base molding that closely matched my existing molding.. much better than the box stores. You can really see the craftsmanship when it comes to the molding. I think Norm, the owner, and his crew are great and I trust him to be honest, fair and not cut corners. Note: these projects cost more than $3k but I did purchase a lot of my own fixtures and materials ahead of time.

Jacques Builders was very good but, very expensive. The quote was for $50000. I was positive that they would do a very good job. The owner was passionate about his work.
Description of Work: Jacques Builders gave me an estimate to remodel the whole kitchen and bathroom.

It was great they showed up everyday cleaned up after themselves before they left for the day and did awesome work. I would highly recommend them and definitely will hire them again.
Description of Work: Added a room to 2nd floor where there was a cathedral ceiling and finished half my cellar which I had started until I realized it was a little beyond me. We also hired them to built a deck 26'x8' and stained it, no easy feat as it is 25' off the ground.
