Hopeful at firstm then bad, to worse to terrible.................to grand larceny charges in 201
Description of Work: I can not beleive that this fradulent company is still operating as of 2010!!! I am a new member of Angie's List. However, my experience with this roofer has stayed firmly in my mind so the first review I wanted to leave was of Sparrow & St. Cyr! About 8 years ago, my late husband and I needed a new roof on a house for which we were responsible in a nearby town. Trusted friends in still another town had conducted extensive research resulting in several roofs replaced by Mark Sparrow and company within one neighborhood. The rooves had been completed very satisfactorily one or more years from identifying our needs. We openend negotiations with this seemingly competant and professional young man. The roof was completed right on time with Mark present continuously on ther day of the job. Cleanup was a dream without one nail left and all debris spirited away. The sturdy, attractive roof performed superbly from the approximately 2004 installation until at least 2011 when my responsibility for that property ended. Needless to say, we freely and often gave Mark's business a stellar receommendation to any and all who asked for our advice. When it came time for a partial roof replacement at our home as well as a complete roof replacement with ice-dam weather proofing on an elderly relative's home we of course called upon Mark Sparrow. In the late summer of 2008, Mark responded promptly to our invitation to discuss the two jobs we had in mind. We enjoyed a pleasent reunion, opening our home to this neat, capable young man resulting in productive estimates and goal setting. As October of 2008 began spinning by, I deferred our smaller job to allow the very badly needed replacement roof at the ailing elder's home to be completed during dry autumn weather. I rue the day I did so! Some annoyance and doubt had entered my mind as communication began to be haphazard over the next few days and weeks leading up to Hallowe'en. I didn't learn from Sparrow & St. Cyr the date of the full roof replacement installation ahead of time even though I stated that I wanted to be present on the installation day to represent my elderly relative's interests. Coincidentally, I arrived at the site surprised to find a crew of poilte, non-English speaking workers finishing a roof which looked VERY thin to my novice mind. I snapped a few photos of the hasty workers and single layer roofing materials. Indeed, in the past 4 winters water and ice issues with the "new roof" only increased the problems experienced in the old roof. At least two flat tires and a sizeable load of debris must be laid at this fraudulent operator's dingy door. These issues remain unresolved up to the present day.As to the rubber roof section job at our home, Mark claimed his mother had also expressed a need for a similar type of roofing and he would try to link our two small jobs to gain both parties the best price on materials if we could be ready to go when she was able to gather her "pennies." A few weeks later, Mark called saying that his "mother was ready to go..." and could we get started as well. Sure, as we were all set to go when we spoke as well as now. Mark then asked for a $1400.00 (50% down payment) so that he could "buy the rubber roofing for both roof sections at the same time to get the bulk price..." Seemed a little sudden and tending to indicate an uncomfortably "close to the bone" operating budget for such a busy roofer, but we trusted him so "OK!" we said. We left a check in an agreed upon hiding place on our porch tucking some candy alongside as it was Hallowe'en afternoon and we would be doing door duty at a relative's busy, young neighborhood in a nearby town when Mark picked up the hurredly requested check. The check was gone, along with the candy when we returned home late that October 31, 2008 evening. That communication was the last we ever received from Mark Sparrow. Throughout the rest of that long, warm, dry autumn and as often as a distracted caregiver could I peppered his telephone numbers with call after call after call to absolutely no avail. My gravely ill husband, in various hospitals since later in November 2008, finaly came home to rest in a hospital bed under that same leaky roof in July of 2009. That same, leaky, worrisome, unreliable roof witnessed his death in early 2010. In July of 2010, I filed grand larceny charges through my local police department. The court case appeared to drag on through endless continuances and this widow despaired of ever seeing my hard-earned $1400.00. Finally, word came that the defendant would make restitution. Month
