In a nutshell: a terrible experience that makes us never want to do work on our house again. Karen sold herself hard to us in the beginning -- "female vision", "transparency", "attention to detail", "integrity" etc etc. It all ended up being an empty sales pitch, and boy did we learn a hard lesson. The biggest grievance we have with Karen was the complete disrespect and lack of care she showed our home and us as paying customers. The day of demolition, she took down the plastic partition walls that are supposed to contain dust and debris and sent us pictures. The dust takes days to settle, and her carelessness caused the dust to travel THROUGHOUT our home and into our child-on-the-way's nursery. She knew that we were planning on living in our home through construction and said we only needed to leave the house for a few days during demo. Our home was completely uninhabitable and unsafe. It was devastating and we confronted Karen. She refused to take responsibility and told me I was emotional from being pregnant. (Yes, you read that correctly.) We lost trust in her then and there and began asking more questions. Karen did not like this and checked out on our project. She went completely off the grid. She wouldn't respond to texts, calls, and especially emails. She was rude and responded with one liner emails that didn't answer any of our questions or give us any indication she was doing anything to work WITH us towards a joint goal: completing our project. She made it near impossible to work with her. I also want to mention that her subs do all the work - she isn't a carpenter or a plumber anything. I cannot believe we paid her 20% of cost so she could sit back and watch her subcontractors while making our lives miserable. She doesn't actually do anything and all the good ideas came from her subs not her. She promised us we would be able to review all the bills. When the time came, she sped through a binder and when I asked her to slow down she said no because she didn't want me to know who the subs were because I might contact them directly, which by the way I was not permitted to do per the contract. She acted like someone you shouldn't trust. She hurried us to make BIG decisions having only given us partial information. When we asked for dimensions of cabinets and a third layout plan, she said she would not do it and that we needed to make a decision. She took her sweet time on her end and was aggressive and forceful when it came time to us needing to make decisions. She is a very poor communicator and never put anything in writing, which made it very difficult to hold her accountable. (We now know that that was her plan all along.) If I said "remember, we said we wanted X,Y,Z" she would say "no you didn't" and that was that. We felt like she was the customer not us. We felt bullied and it was a terrible experience. The project took 8 months and we never got our punch list completed (to this day). I could go on and on and on.... I think you get the gist. Do not hire Karen.
