In all cases I have found the work to be of high quality, the personnel to be polite and responsive, and the follow up service to be excellent. The work and service has been expensive, but one gets what one pays for, especially with tradesmen.
Description of Work: Our first contact with Gary Wilson was when he was starting out and installed a dishwasher and sink for us. Since then Wilson Services completely redid our heating by installing a gas furnace and putting in four radiators in a hard to heat part of the house. This was done in '06. He has also done some smaller plumbing jobs for us.

I thought I'd submitted this report shortly after the service date, but I just checked my list of reviews and realized that I didn't. Based on all of the positive feedback on this site, we hired Wilson to come to our home in South Hadley to service our older gas furnace. We had just purchased the home and were worried that the technician would give us an expensive estimate for all sorts of work that we didn't understand, and we'd have to get another estimate to confirm that the work needed to be done (this had happened with several other types of contractors and service companies, so we were getting used to it, unfortunately). This wasn't what happened at all. The technician, Josh, was extremely knowledgeable and professional, and he suggested several cost-effective ways of getting the most efficiency out of our older furnace (e.g., applying metal tape to the seams of the ducts to prevent air leakage in the basement). He also noticed that our hot coils were getting old, but he said we'd probably get another year of life out of them and could replace them the following fall. Not once did Josh try to sell us on anything we didn't need, which I really appreciated. Sadly, I feel like this kind of honest, no-pressure service is too hard to find sometimes. I should also mention that Josh came on time, invited me to look at the hot coil reading, and patiently answered all of my nervous new homeowner questions. I'm extremely pleased with the service I received from Wilson, and would gladly recommend them to anyone. This single visit alone made my Angie's List membership worth every penny.
Description of Work: We hired Wilson to do an annual inspection on our furnace, which included checking the system and all of its components, replacing the filter, reading CO2 levels, etc.

Thank you for a very nice review. You mentioned several things that, honestly, I feel many people don't even realize is happening when trades people are in their home. You're correct, there are companies out there that will drum up the costs in a heart beat- I hear about them all the time, and have read some grueling reports here on Angies List. It's not possible to be perfect all the time when it comes to in-home services, yet I realize when contractors try their best, most home owners are very happy. We never twist arms and up-sell, although if a home owners has a safety concern you can bet we are going to be firm about the options available. Of course we will make general recommendations too, many home owners are happy to have their hvac systems enhanced and even replaced when we simply explain the reasons for doing so. Thanks again, Gary Wilson

Seeing all of the good reviews on Angie's list I was hoping to develop a relationship with Wilson's to service/clean our current furnace (oil) and give an estimate on converting to gas and adding radiant heat. I spent over a week going back and forth trying to schedule a cleaning and separate appointment for the estimate (since the owner had to do it) around my wife's february break this week. I set the cleaning for 2/21 and left a list of possible times the rest of the vacation week to set an estimate for the other work. ...A week later...The MORNING of the scheduled appointment I was called to say that my house in South Hadley was too far away for Wilson's to be responsible for my furnace if something went wrong outside of work hours. Since they hadn't installed it, once they cleaned it they would be responsible for driving the 20 minutes if an emergency ever arose in future winters, so they cancelled the furnace cleaning last minute. Not only was I appauled that the opportunity to do some major work on a gas conversion and radiant heat project wasn't worth this minor 'risk' of an unlikely 20 minute drive, they made me wait over a week to hear back before telling me I wouldn't be able to have my furnace cleaned at all. If I were told right off the bat I wouldn't have wasted my time going back and forth to set up the appointment and now will not likely be able to schedule something else for this week while my wife is home to meet a service-person. The secretary even had the gaul to ask me if I stil wanted the estimate. If you don't live in Northampton or Easthampton don't bother with Wilson's.
Description of Work: No service was performed (read below). They just wasted my time and were totally unprofessional about it. Given the below scenario it MIGHT have been a bit better if the owner called me himself to apologize rather than blowing me off.

I'm very sorry we wasted your time. Our office person is new and between our technician and myself we forgot to tell her we don't accept new oil system accounts, it doesn't matter where you live. We only wish to deal with the oil systems that we installed. We have oil systems twice the distance (to your location) that you indicate. I am confident she won't be making this mistake again. Thanks, Gary Wilson

They showed up on time. The service people were nice. We talked about some problems. They listened to me when I told them what I thought it was. It was not what it turned out to be but it was close. It was nice that they listened rather than just ignore. Once they narrowed down to what the actual problem was they had a catalog that they were able to give me the price for the installation and the price for the part. There was no deviation from that. Within four hours, my heat was back on. I didn’t compare prices but I was happy with their price. I would recommend them.
Description of Work: I used Wilson Services Inc about a year ago in January. They fixed my steam heating unit. They charged me about $450 and that included the part, which was probably $300.

Gary Wilson, the owner of Wilson Services, was very clear and patient in his presentation of the different options we had to choose from. We met a number of times, at his office, at our home and on the premises of the job. We exchanged e-mails and phone calls. His exceptional communication skills continued through all of the phases of the job. It involved many days of his workmen going in and out of the 8 apartments because we had all the 40 radiators on 4 floors removed and replaced with the greatest new thin, attractive and efficient ones. In addition new holes had to be drilled in the floors of each room to install the new piping. Their crew had to interact with the tenants continually and they did so with great efficiency and courtesy. There were no complaints from tenants. There were, now and then, a special request here and there and those were always readily accommodated. Having been in the rental business for over 40 years you can imagine how many different contractors we have interacted with over the years. Gary Wilson has, by far, the best communication skills possible. Questions are not only always answered all during the project, but they are answered promptly. The quality of the work is equally special. I would be happy to show the results to anyone that is interested. The work and installations are thoughtfully planned out and the jobsite is always orderly and clean. The result is the equivalent of a work of art. In addition there were many extra things that we were helped with. We had gotten a price from an asbestos removal company, but they couldn?t do the work until 3 months later than we wanted it done. Gary recommended someone he was familiar with and they did the work immediately and at half the price and did a good job. Good things like that, that were helpful, were constantly happening and they included a few extra tasks that were not included in the final bill. The efficiency followed through to the very end and included giving us the proper guidance in filling out the rebate forms. We received our checks with no questions asked. This meant a great deal to me because the last job with rebates I had done (by someone else) the forms had to be returned and done over three times before we got our checks because the contractor had not given us the proper information.
Description of Work: Last spring we decided to replace a big, old, inefficient, oil-fired boiler that heated 8 apartments and cost a fortune to operate, with 8 individual boilers so that each apartment would have its own boiler along with its own thermostat. It was going to be a sizable job and an expensive project so we consulted with several contractors. Wilson Services was one of those and the one we chose to do the job and it turned out to be the right decision from beginning to end.

Thanks for the nice report, I got an impression you weren't shopping around, yet I gave you our normal costs. Re-plumbing the hot water lines throughout the basement was roughly $800 of the total, I am hoping the shorter and more-direct hot water lines are getting hot water to the various bathrooms a little faster. I am glad you're happy with the overall job.

Two men arrived at 9;30 in the morning and left before noon. The total parts for the job, by my Home Depot estimate was less than $200. The total bill was $1200. I feel that $1000 for labor was very high for 5 man hours of work and not worth what I had done. The men also did not do a very good job of cleaning up after themselves. There are black finger prints on painted surfaces, wood chips and small PVC pieces from drilling holes where left on the floor that i had to clean up.

It's a disappointment when the whole story isn't conveyed. This person hired a handy man to do his plumbing work and when the building inspector told him he needed a licensed plumber, he called us. We were extremely busy when he called and I even recall telling my office lady to “ask him if he can get his handyman to find a local plumber to take care of this, it will be less money”. She passed this message on to him. He persisted and I sent a plumber out to assess. When the plumber told me there was more to the story (more work that what was originally conveyed to our office staff), I went myself to see what was needed to correct everything. I gave a price for the work and he agreed and asked when (as in ‘how fast can you get here’). We did the work the following week. When I give someone a price for any project it includes all of our costs associated which includes time involved assessing the work. This job went a little faster than predicted. If it went slower I would not have asked for more money. He talks about black fingerprints on a white surface… this is a white painted cast iron pipe that we needed to actually cut, or ‘snap’, into twice and install a new cast ion fitting. On the initial visit I asked him “are you going to leave this new plumbing exposed, or would you build a box around it to hide all of this (black plastic pipe, white-painted cast iron pipe, stainless steel connectors)?” He indicated it was not a concern either way, perhaps he would build a box and hide both the old and new pipes. It’s a stretch for sure to expect a plumber to work on 100 year old cast iron and have clean hands. What is unacceptable is leaving a mess and this is the only thing I can agree with (even though the bathroom wall was completely torn apart, and the bathroom was in a definite ‘working/remodeling’ mode). It seems like I am taking on the burden of his first experience with the non-professional (and who knows how much money the non-pro charged him, he doesn’t mention that part) as well as some relatively minor shortcomings on our end. When I discussed this report with him in person he agreed he should have called me first instead of (hastily) posting a negative report. I urge anyone reading this to get several prices and hire who you think will give you the best overall service based on whatever costs they are quoting you. Any concerns (before, during, after the installation) should be addressed with normal communication. Gary Wilson- owner

I moved into a new (old) house with an old oil boiler, propane stove, and propane hot water. I had talked to a few different companies and was faced with the decision of keeping an oil furnace or going with propane (no natural gas service). Of course, the companies that sold oil wanted to sell me an oil furnace. Every place I called seemed to want to talk me out of making any major changes. I talked to Gary Wilson when I was in the middle of closing on the house and trying to get some estimates to hopefully negotiate the price a little. He was the only one I talked to who gave me a useful piece of advice: that unlike oil boilers, oil forced air furnaces were tough to keep clean and operating at their rated efficiency and they gunk up more often due to the fact that diesel is not a very clean fuel. I appreciated someone giving me a tidbit of useful, technical information instead of feeling like I'm being sold something. That wasn't the only thing that made me go with propane. The chimney needed to be repaired if I was staying with oil at a cost of $2000 (gas furnaces vent out the side of the house with plastic pipe) and many propane companies gouge you on fuel if you don't use a certain minimum amount a year (the cost to fill up my existing 100 gal tank for my stove and hot water was $4.09/gal vs $2.90/gal if you meet the minimum!) Lastly, if natural gas ever made it up my street, I could convert pretty easily, which is not out of the realm of possibilites since they have it on a nearby street. Anyway, Gary took my email at our first meeting. I never received an estimate, which I assumed was an email mix up. Once I actually closed on the house, I gave Wilson Services a call. After a made contact, Gary was very responsive over email. He answered all my questions and gave me some options. Since his work would be inspected, I had to contend with my water heater, which wasn't very old, but was vented by a crooked vent pipe into the chimney (illegal and probably unsafe). Gary gave some options on that as well. Either I needed a new power vented water heater, fix the chimney (which I was trying to avoid), or run a 3" b-vent pipe up to the roof. Even though it was a ton of work, It was cheapest to run the vent myself. I ended up knocking out my 2 story chimney so I had a space to run the new vent and I regained some closet space in the process. Once I was done with what I had to do, Gary and his crew came in. They came right when he said they would and had the new furnace installed and the old one removed within a couple days. Gary requested if could get the old oil tank the following week, which I had no issue with and he did. Overall, everything was done quickly and properly, and it's nice to have heat again.
Description of Work: Replaced old oil forced-air furnace with a new 90,000 btu 95% AFUE LP gas furnace. New filter assembly and some minor duct repair. Replaced copper gas piping with black steel. Removed the old oil tank and furnace.

The system was installed incorrectly by another vendor working for the previous owner of the house. The other vendor (the installer) did not show up to fix it after 3 weeks of waiting. On 12/31/2010 I noticed a small water leak by around my boiler. I did some looking around and appeared to be coming from a relief valve. At some point I though it would be a good idea to open the relief valve to drain some water to "fix" it. Well I found out that this is not a good idea, I made a water mess. I had to shut down the boiler and the house main water supply to contain a possible flooding. I called Wilson services. (What I should have done from the beginning). I got their answering service, and knowing is 12/31/2010 at around 4 pm. I knew this could be a problem. The person at the answering service was courteous and professional, she took all my information. She told me that if someone did not call me in 15 minutes, to call her back. Well about 10 minutes later my phone rings. I was surprised when Gary Wilson, the owner himself answered the service call. I explained the situation and after some troubleshooting, it was determined that someone will have to come and replace the relief valve. Well I was double surprised that it was Gary himself who will be coming to my house on "New Years Eve" to fix it. Not only that. He had the the same relief valve in stock and was able to come in and replace it within a couple of hours. Well then next day. Now 1/1/2011 "New Years Day". I uncover that the water leak was not only from the relief valve like I though, it was actually was coming from what appeared to be a sauter pinhole between the copper pipe and a brass fitting. I communicated to Gary about the new leak discovery. Gary again came through. He communicated later back to me he would be in my house in about an hour. He made it on time and I can tell you he did the job right. He drained all the system and sauter back the leaky pipe properly. He checked the boiler for proper operation and any new possible leaks. Needless to say I am a happy customer. I am glad that I picked Wilson Services to install and service my boiler. In the past , I had my fair share of bad experiences with another bigger gas and service company. But Gary and his company have come through for me when I have needed them. He provides excellent customer service and the quality of his work is top notch.

He was nothing but professional throughout our entire experience with him. His crew was exceptionally friendly and trustworthy. The work performed was done in a way that was superior to what most installers consider "well done". I can't say enough about this company, you really do get what you pay for and I know for a fact that the work done in my new home was done in the utmost correct way and will last a very long time as well as adding to the value of the house.
Description of Work: We recently purchased a historic house in Amherst. We converted the home from oil to natural gas. After the gas company piped in natural gas from the street, Gary Wilson and his crew installed all of the new gas piping within the home for clothes dryer, water heater, oven/range, and boiler. We purchased the new boiler through him as well as the new water heater. This job was quite extensive because we had him install 2 Unico Air Conditioning systems within the house as well.

After we moved I called him up to see if he would do service calls to our new town which is about 20 miles away. He was willing to come to our town and do the work for us and we were happy with him and his workers. I don?t know if his prices are competitive because I didn?t shop around.
Description of Work: I used Wilson Services at my previous house and at this house. They installed central air at our old house and they put in our system and did some plumbing at this house.

Very well. The office staff was very helpful in scheduling during a very busy time for me. Gary Wilson came to make the estimate and explained the system thoroughly to me and made my decision to hire his firm quite easy. The installation team arrived when and as promised and the completed work looks (to my non-plumber eye) very clean and efficient. They also didn't leave a trace of debris behind at either work site--where they removed the old tank and installed the new one. My only quibble, and it's a tiny one, is that they did not put the storage boxes they moved to do the work back where they belonged when they were done. Overall, a wonderful job.
Description of Work: Installed on-demand gas hot water heating system. Also uninstalled and removed old tank hot water system.

I just purchased my first home which had an old furnace that was not energy efficient and wanted to replace with an energy efficient unit through the MassSave program. As part of the program, I was advised to get three different bids and see who is cost effective. I found Gary's company on Angie's List. I called the company and was able to make an appointment within 2 business days. Gary was very professional and patient. He realized that I am a new home owner and had no idea what I was doing and took the time to educate me about my furnace and also my house. I kept asking him question about things that had nothing to do with the furnace and more to do with the general up keep of my house and he was very patient and answered every question. I tried 2 other companies that I found on Angie's list and Gary's price for the furnace was $300 less than the other companies. Gary followed up our first meeting with an email that contained detailed information on the furnace and different rebates that I can claim. He is very prompt with email replies also. Due to the MassSave program I was going through I had to have the bids for the furnace, AC, and hot water heater separated out, which he did for me. Bob and the rest of the guys that installed the unit were just great. They were professional, good humored and on task. The took great care in keeping the work area clean. They were able to answer all the questions I asked them. You can tell these guys really like working together because it was a joy to interact with them. The job only took 2 days to complete. After the job was completed, Gary came back and inspected the job the guys had done and to answer any more questions I may have had. I highly recommend this company. I will definitely be using them in to install my AC and hot water heat.

Thanks for your encouraging words. That's what I love about my job is meeting all sorts of people with widely different levels of understanding regarding heating systems. You were great as I did my best to answer your questions; on occasion I meet people that are not nearly as well-humored and much more serious (meaning less fun!). Thanks! Gary
