I can't recommend the Curtice Group enough! We did a kitchen renovation, including design and construction, with them in 2024 and the process was quick, the team was extremely communicative, and the end product is gorgeous! In October 2023, we started the design process with them to see what would be possible with our kitchen area that was out-of-date and not functional for our family.Eric Curtice came by a few times to do thorough measurements of our space in order to render some designs for us to look through. Scott, the owner, gave us a breakdown of costs; he was very practical about what he thought was important and what was not, balancing need with price. It was so refreshing to get such a granular view of exact costs before diving into a renovation project. After design, we decided to go forth with construction, which kicked off in early January 2024. Scott's team set us up a temporary kitchen (including a dishwasher) which made living under construction so easy. The project manager, Shawn, was there every single weekday, and Scott came at the start of most weeks to check on progress. The Curtice Group team were incredibly communicative the entire time, giving us updates via email about timeline and costs. We were done with our project by mid-March (just 2.5 months!) and we're thrilled with the end result. Even better, we came in a little under budget. You should absolutely hire this group. We'll definitely be calling them for future projects!

The Curtice Group were excellent throughout the project. Scott Curtice was extremely helpful, engaged and communicative through entire project, with many great practical and aesthetic ideas on design, fixture selection, execution (minimizing disruption to remainder of house not being worked, considering living space arrangements while half of house/bedrooms/bathrooms out of use, and setting up a temporary laundry) and finishes. He was cost conscious and fully transparent about pricing and the effect of various choices and selections throughout, while remaining happy to go ahead with whatever choices we made after weighing on the pros and cons. His project manager Vassili was also great to work with, also very thoughtful about both the functional aspects of the project as well as the look. The final result has exceeded our expectations. The work also progressed steadily, without being left for any period without contractors or subcontractors moving things along, and stayed to the planned tight schedule (taking about 8 months for entire project)

Scott and The Curtice Group team were fantastic to work with from start to finish. The project was extensive, full bathroom remodel, removal of out dated electrical in 75% of the house, and finishing the basement to be a new living space with full bathroom, bedroom, mudroom, and laundry room, which included a new HVAC system, new plumbing, and significant structural engineering. Scott worked with me to develop an overall design and was open to ideas and questions and did a great job incorporating my wish list of ideas into the design, while providing insight and recommendations based on his years of experience. Scott developed a very detailed plan and budget and was very transparent during the entire process, communicating well when there were changes to timeline or budget. Throughout the duration of the project Scott and his team were available for my questions, provided me their recommendations, and guided me through the process. The extensive project was completed on time and in budget and the quality of craftsmanship (e.g., the design, woodwork, tile work, painting) is outstanding. I have nothing but positive experiences working with Scott and The Curtice Group and highly recommend them.

The Curtice Group finished our bathroom renovation in early April 2023. We can give a wholehearted positive review for Scott Curtice’s coordination of the project including keeping to and even improving upon the original schedule, cost transparency throughout, and thoughtful approaches to both design as well as any problems encountered. Scott was an excellent communicator all through the work, being both accessible and responsive to our concerns and questions. Proficient management of the timing of subcontractors by Scott and his project managers was key to the success of the process. All of the above contributed to a great result. The bathroom work included a complete change in the location of the original plumbing and an extension into another room. Scott designed a bathroom that fits our needs, which includes a lot of storage as well as a feeling of spaciousness in what is not really a big space. At the outset, he recommended vendors, always with the caveat that we could choose our own. He also accompanied us to a vendor for the main plumbing components of the bathroom. For access during the work, he created a temporary entrance that would allow access to the work site without going through the rest of the house. In addition to the bathroom, we changed multiple interior doors, replaced the original basement windows and door, changed multiple lighting fixtures and did additional carpentry work. We also addressed remedial plumbing problems in the basement as well as in another bathroom.
Description of Work: The main project was a new bathroom, which included extending the room and changing placement of all the plumbing. In addition, the project included replacing many old pipes in another bathroom and in the basement. We also had a number of interior doors replaced, all of the basement windows, new thermostats, a number of electrical fixtures and also some needed carpentry work.

WARNING – DO NOT PAY FOR CONSULT – IT IS A SCAM! I was matched up to The Curtice Group through Angi’s List. From the beginning the company was very responsive and flexible. I made it very clear that I needed the full price for their Architecture work, and that I already had a plot plan. They provided me with the pricing both via email and a written contract. I was very hesitant to move forward since there was a $250 consultation fee, but I figured they must be that good. The day of the consultation, Scott arrived at our home and immediately double the quoted price. He stated that there were several add-ons that were not included in the original price, however this is flat out bait and switch, and I was clearly lied to by this company (and have it in writing to prove it). This is similar to requesting a total price for a car from a car dealer which they provide to get you interested, only to have them later tell you that tires are extra. Scott was at our home for not more than 20 minutes and had absolutely no interest in even looking at our home. His overall demeanor was extremely condescending and not consultative. As it turns out, Scott was only interested in telling us what wouldn’t work rather than come up with solutions. I did not expect to be the one guiding the conversation and making suggestions, when I had expected to have an “expert” there for a consultation to help us through our first major renovation. When me and my wife asked if he wanted to see the rest of the house or even look at the bedrooms or the basement, his response was “no, what’s the point”. We both looked at each other and were like who the heck is this guy and what is his problem! Scott displayed no interest in our project and only made a point to put up roadblocks and even went so far as to make disparaging comments about our home, stating “well I guess this is the forgotten room”. Honestly, I should have just kicked him out of our home after he insulted our home, but I let it go in hopes that things would improve. Unfortunately, things never improved, and only got worse as Scott displayed a general lack of interest in our project and his true work ethic came out. The only thing Scott showed a true interest in, was collecting a check for the $250 “consultation fee”. I requested to Scott to have the “consultation” fee refunded to me, given the fact that they had so blatantly lied and committed bait and switch. I even suggested to Scott that they should look to make process improvements since they so clearly quoted me one price in writing and then doubled the price verbally in our meeting. Scott acknowledged that I was correct and also acknowledged that the meeting felt “rushed”, but he did not respond to my request for a refund. The icing on the cake is that Scott immediately cashed the check that I felt strong armed to provide to him, even after he had admitted that I was correct about the pricing and that the meeting hadn’t gone well. I am still not quite sure what exactly I was paying for. It is my opinion that this company is running a scam, and this is a very clear money grab strategy. They practice bait and switch as well as deceptive business practices, in order to get consumers interested and to book a consultation. They then show up and verbally state that the total cost was much higher than they had previously disclosed and demand a $250 check for a “consultation fee” after not even providing any level of service or even showing any interest in the project.

Response from The Curtice Group
[Member Name Removed] asserts that we lied to him regarding the Design Contract. This is not the case. We told him it was a time and materials contract and not a fixed cost. He apparently did not read the contract, which is only two pages and very clearly states the work [Member Information Removed] be done by the hour. It was limited (in his case to $3,000). We would need his permission to continue work past that amount. It does not promise to do any set amount of work for a fixed price. The 3K is an estimate based on other jobs of similar size and scope. That contract was never signed or executed The purpose of the consultation is to (in part) [Member Information Removed] ballpark costs for the construction to see if it is worth proceeding to the design stage. When they (he and his wife) gave me their wish list, I provided a crude (Ball Park) estimate to see if their budget was in line. It was not. When I gave them the bad news – they were visibly upset. (But upset with me?) They kept asking if I wanted to see the rest of the house. I told them that was not going to affect the cost of the project they wanted to pursue. I suggested some projects of smaller scope that would fit their budget better but they were not interested. I did come out to their house so I do need to collect the fee as agreed. I also offered to spend more time with him on a Google meet to go [Member Information Removed] some of the jobs that I have done. There, he could see where all the costs go a why these additions are as pricey as they are today. He was not interested. I do feel badly, but not because of the accusations he has levied against me. But rather because he told me he has engaged an Architect to do the drawings for him. I believe he [Member Information Removed] pay a lot more than I would have charged him for plans that, when disseminated to other builders [Member Information Removed] wind up costing far beyond their budget. He asserts that I lied to him. But I feel like I am the only one telling him the truth. This is a clear case of ‘Please don’t shoot the messenger!’
It was a 6-month project, that went very well, particularly because of the high-quality professionals doing the work, communication, reliability, resourcefulness, problem-solving skills, and overall transparency.

I had an excellent experience with The Curtice Group. I would highly recommend them and I'd use them again for a future project. We utilized the full design to build service to add a master bedroom/bath/closet, a 2nd floor 3x10 balcony, and renovate a number of items associated with the build including a re-build of an existing bathroom. We live in an old house and Scott did a fantastic job making use of space and working with the house limitations, and overall, giving us lots of details and options as we had back/forth meetings on the concept. The design process was great. We had a number of meetings starting from a wish list that expanded to initial design concepts and then to more final concepts. Scott made excellent use of space and gave us a lot of options which for budget reasons, we had to slowly narrow things down to a final concept. The build was equally fantastic. Not only was the quality extremely high but they stayed on schedule and never skipped days; there was always a team working every day. The workers and subs were reliable and on schedule, which you dont see too much of. Not only that but juggling/managing the schedule when the different subs had to show up was very impressive as the goals for each week were always met. Scott and his team really care to make a top-quality build. A few family members in construction walked through a few times and commented on the high quality of everything. The house had two surprises as we things opened up. Somewhat expected as unwelcome as it was: a bad foundation and a roof with upgrades needed. Both these items were attended to very quickly and surprisingly got back on track sooner than I thought it would. Budget: Scott's budget was extremely accurate. Aside from the 2 house surprises (above) and the additional rise in lumber cost during COVID, all numbers and quotes lined up extremely well. Yes the cost went over the estimate but I hold no concern over this, since it was due to two extra side projects (that were impressive accomplishments). When the project was done Scott made sure we were happy with everything. A few items to touch up were quickly dealt with and Scott really went above and beyond making sure things were 100%. No negative comments from me. Any items to nit-pick are not worth putting in a review: this was an extremely positive experience and I would recommend the Curtice Group and would/will certainly utilize them again in the future.

Scott and his crew were absolutely fantastic and we would hire them again in a heartbeat. Scott is incredibly professional, communicative, and prompt. Additionally, the budgeting process he uses is wholly transparent relative to other contractors we have worked with and we loved this approach of his. All in all we found working with Scott to be an absolutely amazing experience that you won't find much of in the Boston area--he is truly a real hidden gem of a contractor. The cherry on top for us was that he managed to get us in two months ahead of schedule!! We didn't have the largest job in the world to take care of, but it was a significant one in terms of the integrity of our house and a bit of an unusual one as far as finding contractors who had experience in dealing with issues of rafter spread. Due to the age of our home (pretty common in the Boston area), it was an improperly framed stick-and-beam frame from the get-go insufficient to support the heavy snow loads we get in the area and needed structural reinforcement in the attic to prevent the rafter spread from compromising the exterior walls of our home. Not only did Scott fully appreciate the scope of the problem quickly, he reassured us he had extensive experience correcting a number of these issues, and together with his structural engineer devised a creative fix relative to proposals from other contractors that preserved a significant amount of headroom in our attic should we ever want to finish it.
Description of Work: Rafter spread problem in attic framing
Every aspect of this project, from planning and architectural work to contractors, sub contractors and coordination was 100%. I received a spreadsheet every week with expenses as compared to budget including all materials and labor. Each step of the project including consultations, advice for saving $$ as well as suggestions for improvements in existing HVAC systems were valuable. All contractors were 100% reliable, professional, were creative and constructive in addressing challenges that emerge in any project and demonstrated outstanding follow through. The shop is extremely comfortable even on the coldest days and maintains even humidity for the wood. The project was on budget, on time and exceeded expectations, particularly with regard to workmanship, communication and professionalism.
Description of Work: This project included creating a master bedroom suite on first floor that required significant structural changes to plumbing, electricity and supporting walls. It also included constructing a wood working shop not attached to the house, insulated with electricity and heating with a second floor for lumber storage.

We wanted a design and build firm to make design/cost tradeoffs. It went great as the project was done well, under budget, and quicker than expected. They act as a general contractor and you can be as little or as much as involved as you want. For things we had strong opinions on we met with the subs also. We've been in the space 6+ months and haven't had any problems. Our basement has been dry (they installed a perimeter drain).

At the time we bought our house, we knew we’d need a down-to-the-studs renovation on our kitchen and first floor bathroom. After living with the house for quite some time, we finally decided to move the bathroom, incorporate our mudroom as indoor space, and open up our floor plan. We needed design help, significant structural reinforcement, and soup-to-nuts project management: enter the Curtice Group. Scott drew up great plans, created a manageable budget, and helped us to visualize the space from the start. His team created a temporary kitchen in our living room and went to work while allowing us to keep up with our jobs and manage our small child. The result of the renovation was better than we imagined, on time, and on budget. Scott has a small team with a much wider network of subcontractors that want to work with him, because he pays them well and manages everything precisely. The Curtice Group is not cheap, but you don’t get quality work on the cheap. I can’t recommend this team enough. We couldn’t be happier with their work.
Description of Work: Complete renovation of kitchen, dining room, mudroom, powder room
I highly recommend using Scott Curtice for any renovation project no matter how complex it is. We bought a house that was over a hundred years old that had not been renovated for decades. Starting from the planning stage, Scott was wonderful about redesigning the house in order to open up the space and bring it into a more modern look. He spent several sessions reworking his plan always taking into account our needs and desires. Once the actual renovation began, we ran into a number of complex structural issues with the house itself. No matter what obstacle came up, Scott and his team were able to find solutions. His team was efficient in their work and they were all always reliable. In fact, many of our neighbors were astounded that all subcontractors worked on the home daily and that they actually were busy the entire time they were at our house. In addition, the lines of communication between ourselves and Scott, as well as his subcontractors, were always open. They kept us abreast of the project's updates and always made suggestions for ways to improve the work for aesthetics and/or cost savings ideas. Scott’s work was beautiful and he and his crew paid attention to every detail. The majority of the house required a gut renovation and it came out exquisite. Even after the job was complete, he was always available for questions. I would highly recommend using them for any job you have.

Scott and his team were great at navigating our construction project during COVID-19. They built an exterior stairway to the section of the house they were working on and installed a barrier between the construction zone and the rest of the house. This let us live in the house while the workers had their own separated area. Our Project Manager Ray was fantastic! His communication was excellent and whenever we had questions he was great at taking the time to explain what he was doing. We love our new space and look forward to our next project with Scott and his team!

Scott and crew did an amazing job. We wanted to make our porch into a windowed room and wanted to heat it using a gas stove. There were many challenges but they were to able to address them all up front and actually came in slightly under budget. They made me aware of all of the options detailing pros and cons of each. We cannot recommend The Curtice Group highly enough. From start to finish, Scott, Eric, Carl and the team were highly collaborative, respectful of our budget, creative with solutions, and spared no detail. Our project ran on time and on budget. Communication was very strong with daily updates and prompts (when needed) from the project manager. The result is wonderful. From the outside, the addition looks like it has always been there (which is what we wanted for our 100+ year old home) and from the inside, the work is meticulous and functional. Our redone basement, including a much improved full bath, looks beautiful and is functional for an active family. We just gained a lot of square footage in our home!

The Curtice Group was what I was looking for: at first blush, a firm to provide top quality sub contractors and oversight of these trades, as well as top quality rough and finish carpentry work. However, I have undertaken and overseen many renovations in the past and had several key subs of my own to bring in to the project, so I also needed a firm that was flexible and open to a hybrid approach to and an out of the box role in the project. Finally, for the project to work as far as my return on investment, I also needed transparent tracking and a tight and efficient approach to all pricing. The Curtice Group proved to be the ideal team for all of the above. The end results speak for themselves in terms of a beautiful and sophisticated finished product that is our new home. Beyond this, I can also speak to the utterly transparent $$ tracking, clear communication on the timeline and the inevitable challenges and changes to this, well informed advice and counsel when needed and asked, and a great collegiality and culture to the variations of the team assembled on sight working together.

The renovation went extremely well. Unlike other contractors, we never experienced the typical complaint that they would have sudden work stoppages and that the schedule would continuously slip because things just never happened on time. Everything was delivered and executed as planned, the work was professional and careful, we received constant recommendations for minor enhancements (rather than just blindly "doing what was told"), and everything was transparent. As far as an experience, I can't imagine a better one. We're definitely hiring again for our next renovation!
Description of Work: We did a full renovation of our downstairs, blowing out the walls to create an open floor plan, with the major focus on renovating our entire kitchen.
My husband and I purchased a home in Belmont which required a full renovation. We interviewed several contractors/design & build firms and Scott was by far the most knowledgeable & able to complete the renovation within our budget whereas none of the others were able to do so. Scott is upfront & honest about costs, he maintains a spreadsheet which enables the homeowner to see where the budget stands. Scott was amazing to work with! Scott met with us in person regularly to discuss the project. In between meetings he was always available to chat via email or on the phone. He made it a point to accommodate my difficult schedule (I was pregnant & put on bedrest) which was greatly appreciated. Scott made sure to stick to the timeline, in fact he even finished the job early. The subcontractors, vendors & project manager that Scott provided us with were such a pleasure to work with, more importantly they were so knowledgeable and they provided the highest quality service/product. Scott has a knack for design & on the rare occasion an issue arose he was always able to quickly resolve the issue. We are absolutely thrilled with how our home turned out, it turned out even better than we imagined! We will absolutely use Scott for some future projects that we have planned. We cannot recommend The Curtice Group enough!
Our experience with Scott and his team was always outstanding. Scott's pricing and project management approach is simple and transparent, his team is prompt and thorough, and perhaps most importantly, when the inevitable challenge occurs, he is right there to help. The Curtice Group is most definitely our contractor of choice.
Description of Work: We have used The Curtice Group for all of our home improvement projects in Newton. We started with a basement family room and bathroom, then a rebuilt master bath, followed by a total kitchen / dining area renovation and an entirely new sun room, and most recently new doors, windows and gutters.
After the purchase of our house, we needed several things done: remove a wall between two bedrooms to make one large master bedroom, create a walk-in closet, and create a laundry space on our first floor. We initially found TCG by pulling the permits from the previous owners to find out who it was that did an amazing job at finishing the basement of our new house. We've have also used The Curtice Group to renovate our front porch- we were very happy with the results. We are in the process of using them again to renovate a back porch into an office, renovate two back steps, and other maintenance work. We've always been very happy with the work done by The Curtice Group- we highly recommend!

I'm happy to give Scott my strongest positive recommendation. Our project went quite smoothly, staying on schedule thanks to the fact that my office is in the house and Scott's commitment to providing a foreman. This enabled us to make decisions quickly and address problems promptly. Scott and his crew showed a lot of creativity in meeting our requirement to stay in the house during the renovation, to the extent of setting up a temporary kitchen and shower in the basement. In the end, we only had to be out of the house for about a week. He was also very good about coordinating with our architect and the cabinetmaker that we selected ourselves. Having heard a few horror stories of renovation cost overruns, I think we also did well in this respect. Our final figure was about 10% more than the initial estimate due to the kind of unforeseen issues that can be expected on any such project, along with a few changes that we ordered. The level of detail Scott provides in his constantly updated spreadsheet also helped us to make some decisions that reduced our cost.
